THE LAST FOUR YEARS HAVE BROUGHT DRAMATIC CHANGES for Snarky Puppy. After a decade of relentless touring and recording in all but complete obscurity, the Texas-bred/ New York-based quasi-collective suddenly found itself held up by the press and public as one of the major figures in the jazz world. But as the category names for all three of the band’s Grammy Awards would indicate (Best R&B
Performance in 2014, Best Contemporary Instrumental Album in 2016 and 2017), Snarky Puppy isn’t exactly a jazz band. It’s not a fusion band, and it’s definitely not a jam band. It’s probably best to take Nate Chinen of the New York Times’ advice, as stated in an online discussion about the group, to “take them for what they are, rather than judge them for what they’re not.”

PATTY GRIFFIN IS AMONG THE MOST consequential singer-songwriters of her generation, a quintessentially American artist whose wide-ranging canon incisively explores the intimate moments and universal emotions that bind us together. The Avett Brothers will be the featured performers at The Center Benefit on Wednesday, July 10, 2019 in The Center Theater. The Avett Brothers made mainstream waves with their 2009 major label debut “I and Love and You” landing at 16 on the Billboard Top 200 and garnering critical acclaim from Rolling Stone, Paste, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and TIME. The Avett Brothers continue to be revered as one of the top folk-rock acts in the nation.

AUSTIN-BASED ALEJANDRO ROSE-GARCIA burst onto the scene armed with a guitar and suitcase kick drum as Shakey Graves in 2011. In December 2017, Shakey Graves proclaimed on his Twitter page, “Next album. New sound. Sell your suspenders.” The tweet was tongue-in-cheek, but Alejandro Rose-Garcia was making a dead-serious point about his latest album, Can’t Wake Up. This ambitious, audacious work heralds an artistic metamorphosis for the 30-year-old veteran, whose risk-taking in painting outside the lines has been rewarded tenfold.
Shakey’s been categorized as an Americana singer/songwriter, thanks to his traditionally rooted songs, fluent acoustic-guitar picking, and Texas roots. Indeed, Shakey was named Best Emerging Artist at the 2015 Americana Music Awards. But that tag will undoubtedly be dismissed as restrictive and irrelevant once this righteously radical new album gets digested by critics and discerning listeners.

WITH THEIR SINGULAR MIX OF SOUL AND R&B AND WHOLEHEARTED ROCK & ROLL, Lake Street Dive makes music that’s timeless yet immediate, exuberant yet reflective. In the 15 years since their formation, the band’s infectious vitality has only magnified in appeal, as proven with the release of their 2018 album Free Yourself Up. Along with earning lavish acclaim, the Boston-bred act’s most recent full-length debuted in the top ten on the Billboard 200, and spent a virtually unprecedented seven-and-ahalf months on the non-commercial radio charts.
Known for their kinetic live shows, Lake Street Dive embarked on a headlining tour of Europe in April. With plans to record new music later this year, the band will also hit the road for a run with The Avett Brothers this summer.

PREVENTING THE MELTING OF GLACIERS THROUGH THE MELTING OF FACES.
Join us for an evening featuring a discussion of the impacts that climate change has on us in our own back yard. Featuring short films, conversation, and most importantly, music, “Glaciers of the Winds” is a documentary film that captures the Alpine Science Institute’s Interdisciplinary Climate Change Expedition (ICCE). In this film, scientists have documented the recession of glaciers in the Wind River Mountains, and its effects on farmers, ranchers, wildlife, and beyond. The focus of these impacts will culminate in an intimate performance by Portugal. The Man.
Proceeds benefit the Alpine Science Institute of Central Wyoming College and Protect Our Winters (POW).

energy, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band remains one of the most accomplished bands in American roots music. Following an extended 50th anniversary tour, the ensemble grew to a six-piece in 2018 for the first time since their early jug band days.
Today, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band consists of Jeff Hanna, Jimmie Fadden, Bob Carpenter, and Jim Photoglo – a friend of the band whose credits include touring and recording with Carole King, Dan Fogelberg, and Vince Gill. Newest members Jaime Hanna and Ross Holmes bring years of experience to the band. All six members also sing, and when their voices merge, the harmonies add a powerful new component for the legendary band.

JOIN JACKSON’S ALL-TIME FAVORITE FOLK
musicians for a special performance on The Center’s stage. Once a year, the Hootenanny trades in its usual Monday-night venue in Moose, WY, and performs an in-town version of the long-running tradition.
Talented pickers, founding performers, longtime stalwarts, and special friends take the stage to perform covers and originals – all acoustically. The Hootenanny began in the 1950s and continues to be a home for some of Jackson’s best musicians. The Center yearly gathering allows Jackson-based talent to belt out their tunes on the large stage and share the magic captured in front on the Tetons with a packed house. Past artists include Bill Briggs, Hank Phibbs, Dan Thomasma, and Byron Tomingas.

IT ALL TOOK OFF FOR KEB’ MO’ IN 1994 with the self-titled release under his newly coined Keb’ Mo’ moniker, and over the years, he has proven that he is a musical force that defies typical genre labels. Album after album garnered him four Grammy Awards and a producer/ engineer/artist Grammy Award Certificate for his track on the 2001 Country Album of the Year, Hank Williams Tribute – Timeless. He has received 11 Grammy Nominations, including Country Song of the Year for “I Hope,” co-written with The Dixie Chicks, and three alone for his 2014 self-produced release, BLUESAmericana including Americana Album of the Year. Keb’ has also been awarded 11 Blues Foundation Awards and 6 BMI Awards for his work in TV & Film.
ST. PAUL & THE BROKEN BONES
ST. PAUL & THE BROKEN BONES FORMED IN 2012, releasing their debut album Half the City in 2014 and its follow up Sea of Noise to much acclaim. Those strong efforts helped place them on the national scene, and the band worked hard to prove they were no mere retro-soul band—from touring the world relentlessly, including being selected to open for The Rolling Stones and headlining two nights at the Ryman Auditorium, to
TV appearances including The Late Show with David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Conan, and Austin City Limits. Paul Janeway’s fearless showmanship, thoughtful lyrics, and dedication to his performance soon became the band’s calling card, paired with the inventive and skillful direction of co-band leader Jesse Phillips, and a full eight-man roster comprised of the best young instrumentalists in the South. MIKE REISS HAS WON FOUR EMMY AWARDS DURING HIS THIRTY years writing for The Simpsons. Mr. Reiss is an award-winning speaker and has lectured in over 500 venues in twenty-two countries. In this hilarious presentation, richly illustrated with rare cartoon clips, he shares secrets, stories, and scandals from his three decades with the show. He also discusses how a man with no children somehow wrote twenty children’s books, as well as two dozen animated films from Ice Age to Minions.

CURATED BY JEFF STEIN AS THE 2019 CREATIVE IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM, ALL THAT’S LEFT BEHIND is a collection of world class artists coming together to create large-scale immersive art installations on The Center Campus. The Center’s Creative in Residence program provides support and space for visiting artists on The Center campus. The goal of the program is to help create a vibrant campus and provide multidisciplinary experiences that engage community members and visitors.

TOWN ENCLOSURE PAVILION
JACKSON HOLE PUBLIC ART PROPOSED THE CONCEPT OF A PAVILION AS BOTH A DRAMATIC SCULPTURE AND AN accessible venue to activate The Center Park as the 2018 Creative in Residence. This residency provides support and space to highlight an interdisciplinary large-scale creative endeavor which results in an impactful and inspiring end product. Carney Logan Burke Architects’ Town Enclosure design was selected and JH Public Art oversaw the entire fabrication and installation of the project. The enclosure is a circular composition of timber panels anchored by a custom steel base, which offers both transparent and opaque views depending on one’s position and perspective.
The Town Enclosure Pavilion is a sculpture and a free venue for community groups, non-profits, and artists. To reserve the space contact Oona Doherty: oona@jhcenterforthearts.org
