Midlife Sapphic Revelation in the Digital Age: How Digital Media Support Coming Out Later

Gina M Masullo, research chair for the Commission on LGBTQIA+ Communities, has published their latest book, “Midlife Sapphic Revelation in the Digital Age: How Digital Media Support Coming Out Later” In this volume, Masullo, of the University of Texas at Austin, documents the lived experiences of women and nonbinary people who came out as queer in middle age, often after long heterosexual marriages Using survey and in-depth interviews, Masullo explores the process of coming out, navigating dating apps, and joining LGBTQIA+ communities on social media. The volume tells the truths of 57 way-later-in-life sapphics who completed the survey, and 34 of those sapphics who participated in interviews.

“The book stands as a subversive statement against the threats on LGBTQIA+ rights in the United States: ‘We’re here; we’re queer, get used to it.”

Masullo complements this analysis with auto-ethnography and digital ethnography exploring their own experience coming out as queer and nonbinary in their 50s after a 22-year relationship with their ex-husband. The book explores the role digital media social media, online communities, and dating apps played in supporting and complicating the process of self-discovery and coming out.

The main takeaway from the book is that two factors growing up in families that strictly practiced religion, and living in a society that does not fully accept queerness resulted in delayed awareness of ourselves. These two factors fostered such intense shame that it left many of us stuck, not understanding ourselves
