A WARM WELCOME
Welcome to the final production of our 57th season at Centaur Theatre! It feels particularly fitting to close with the English-language premiere of the awardwinning Seeker by Marie-Claire Verdier, in a luminous translation by Montreal playwright Alexis Diamond. It is a perfect culmination of our season dedicated to the View from Here.
For this production, we have partnered with Talisman Theatre, whose mission is to bring contemporary Quebec plays in English to Montreal's Anglophone and Allophone communities. This year marks their 20th anniversary, and like Centaur, they are deeply committed to building cultural bridges across this remarkably diverse city.
Seeker is a classic psychological thriller set in a future world plagued with unnecessary wars and manufactured misinformation. Directed by Centaur Theatre's Associate Artist, Rebecca Gibian, this hauntingly beautiful production reveals theatre's extraordinary power to reflect our most pressing concerns as a society and unleash our imagination through an emotionally charged, deeply human story. With nothing more than a stage, light, sound, and two actors, we are carried through an extraterrestrial epic that asks how our collective memory might be the very key to our collective humanity. It is an urgent, essential play for our times.
Thank you for joining us this season. Whether you are a first-time visitor or a long-time subscriber, choosing to come to the theatre especially in turbulent times is an act of belief: in the power of gathering, of shared stories, of the imagination ignited in community. We need each other more than ever. Thank you for being here.
Eda Holmes
Artistic
and Executive Director
A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR
The speculative future of Seeker’s universe begins what may only feel like a few moments beyond our present, but the direct reflection of our reality that we have come to expect from theatre is altered; distorted The bounds of what is possible have widened How this speculative future operates within the bounds of the stage is where the real questions and creative magic lie
The gift of Seeker is that it invites us to let go of the safe, comforting confines of what we know and to surrender to its altered reality For our team of artists, this has above all meant diving feet-first into an unknown that is ours to define
What a fertile soil for beginnings: an English-language world premiere, a Centaur directorial debut, and a new yet not-so-distant world to unfold
Seeker balances on the edge of a precipice, or perhaps just beyond it, and teeters precariously, yet thrillingly, between earth-defining choices Theatre at its very core is about the thrill of live experience, but Seeker pushes this theatrical engine to its very limit The play itself then becomes an analogy for “seeking”: in real time, we share with Lomond his visceral experience of a changing world, jointly immersed while we make discoveries alongside him, even travelling together beyond earth all while breathing the same air
Our whole team on and offstage have taken this challenge for what it is: a thrilling opportunity to dig deep, let imaginations soar, and leave the world behind
