Volunteers play an important part in creating a safe and fun experience for all event attendees. We encourage you to read through the section specific to the area you will be supporting race weekend. The volunteer areas include:

• Packet Pick-up Volunteers

• West Side Wellness Fest Volunteers

In addition to reviewing the information in this guide, you will receive training specific to your program area after checking into your volunteer shift.

SECTION 1 | PACKET PICK-UP

A two-day Packet Pick-up will be held in advance of the event for race participants. Volunteers supporting this area should be aware of the following.

What are the responsibilities of a Packet Pick-up volunteer?

T-shirt distribution: Volunteers will distribute t-shirts to participants, as well as assist with setup and cleanup. Individuals with strong customer service skills are encouraged to volunteer for this role. Packet distribution: Volunteers will welcome participants, verify their bib tag and confirm their participant information (displayed on an iPad) before releasing the bib to them. Individuals with strong customer service skills are encouraged to volunteer for this role. For this position, volunteers must be 18 years of age or older.

When is my shift?

Packet Pick-up is on Friday, June 5 and Saturday, June 6. Please refer to your race week confirmation email for your specific shift details.

Where do I check in for my shift?

Packet Pick-up is located at Roosevelt Collection (150 W. Roosevelt Road, Chicago, IL, 60605). Please arrive at your scheduled shift start time and report to Volunteer Check-in.

How do I get there?

Public transportation: Public transportation is highly encouraged. The Roosevelt Collection is accessible from the following CTA lines:

• Red/Green/Orange Line Trains – Take the Roosevelt Station stop. Walk west on Roosevelt Rd. for roughly one and a half blocks and then turn right on S. Delano Ct.

• #12 Roosevelt Bus – Take the Roosevelt and Delano stop.

• #29 State Bus – Take the State and Roosevelt stop. Walk west on Roosevelt Rd. for roughly one and a half blocks and then turn right on S. Delano Ct.

Parking: Parking is available at the Roosevelt Collection parking garage. We recommend parking on P2 in the Red/ North section and taking the elevator up to the plaza to get to Packet Pick-up. The cost of parking will be reimbursed for volunteers. Please inquire about reimbursement when you arrive at Volunteer Check-in. No parking is allowed on S. Delano Court. This is strictly enforced.

What should I wear?

All volunteers will receive a complimentary t-shirt and hat when they arrive to check-in. We recommend wearing comfortable shoes.

Is food provided?

Snacks and water are provided to all volunteers. Additionally, volunteers who sign up for multiple shifts may receive a meal depending on the duration of their shift(s). Please note that while we try to provide a range of food items, we cannot guarantee that snacks will accommodate all dietary restrictions.

Will a supervisor be present to provide instructions and support me, as needed, during my volunteer shift? Yes. All volunteers will be introduced to their supervisor upon arrival. Your supervisor will provide training specific to your role, and they will be available throughout your shift to support you as needed. If you have any issues with your supervisor or need additional support, please report back to Volunteer Check-in for further assistance.

All volunteers will receive a credential at check-in. In case of an emergency, please refer to the phone numbers listed on the back of your credential.

SECTION 2: WEST SIDE WELLNESS FEST

The Bank of America Chicago 13.1 is excited to work with the West Side community to offer wellness-based activities race weekend. The goal of these events and activities is to support, advance and celebrate health, wellness and movement on Chicago’s West Side. Activities include a Community Shakeout Run, family-friendly 1.31-Mile Walk, Youth Running Events and the Community Village, showcasing local West Side businesses and organizations. Volunteers supporting this area should be aware of the following.

What are the responsibilities of a West Side Wellness Fest volunteer?

Volunteers will support West Side Wellness Walk and Youth Event participants. Volunteer tasks for the Wellness Walk include race day bib pick-up, course marshal, start line and finish line. Following the Walk, volunteers will support the Youth Events. You will receive your specific assignment and more instructions at check-in.

When is my shift?

The West Side Wellness Fest takes place on Saturday, June 6. Please refer to your race week confirmation email for your specific shift details.

Where do I check in for my shift?

Your volunteer role will be in Garfield Park. All Garfield Park volunteers will check in at the Volunteer Compound. When you arrive, follow event signage to reach the Garfield Park Volunteer Compound. You will be required to show your race week confirmation email (printed or on your phone) to access the Volunteer Compound. Click here to view a map.

How do I get there?

• Parking: Please utilize legal street parking around Garfield Park.

• Public transportation: The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) offers an economical and convenient way to check out all Chicago has to offer. For information on CTA fares and transit directions to and from the event, visit transitchicago.com.

• Rideshare: Volunteers utilizing rideshare to access Garfield Park for the West Side Wellness Fest can be dropped off near the Garfield Park Volunteer Compound at the intersection of Music Ct. and Hamlin Blvd.

What should I wear?

You will receive a complimentary t-shirt, hat and credential when you check in. In addition to the items you will receive, we recommend wearing comfortable shoes during your shift. We also encourage you to check the weather forecast and dress accordingly. The event will go on rain or shine!

Is food provided?

SECTION 3: GARFIELD PARK VOLUNTEERS

The Bank of America Chicago 13.1 will take place in Garfield Park on Sunday, June 7.

Volunteers working in Garfield Park should be aware of the following general volunteer information and area-specific information. Continue reading after the FAQ for more information on Start, Finish, Sustainability, Participant Services (Gear Check and Info Team) and Race Day Festival volunteer roles.

When is my shift?

Where do I check in for my shift?

Your volunteer role will be in Garfield Park. All Garfield Park volunteers will check in at the Volunteer Compound. When you arrive, follow event signage to reach the Garfield Park Volunteer Compound. You will be required to show your race week confirmation email (printed or on your phone) to access the Volunteer Compound. Click here to view a map

• Public transportation: The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) offers an economical and convenient way to check out all Chicago has to offer. For information on CTA fares and transit directions to and from the event, visit transitchicago.com.

• Rideshare: Volunteers utilizing rideshare to access Garfield Park on race day will be dropped off at the intersection of Homan Ave. and Warren Blvd. (40 N. Homan Ave.) on the east side of Garfield Park.

• Race day bike valet: A courtesy secured valet bike corral will be available at the southwest corner of Central Park Avenue and Madison Street within Garfield Park for bike parking. Bike valets will be monitored by event personnel.

• Race day parking and shuttle: If you plan on driving, please be aware of street closures and plan extra travel time to accommodate for traffic. Legal street parking is limited near the start and finish lines in Garfield Park. Parking and a shuttle service will be available for free at the Halsted/Taylor Parking Structure with parking entrances at 760 W. Taylor Street and 763 W. Polk St, located on the campus of University of Illinois Chicago (UIC). The shuttle to Garfield Park will operate from 4 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The final shuttle leaves Garfield Park at 12:30 p.m. Shuttles will drop off and pick up volunteers on the south side of Garfield Park at Central Park Avenue and Monroe Street. Will a supervisor be present to provide instructions and support me, as needed, during my volunteer shift? Yes. All volunteers will be introduced to their supervisor upon arrival. Your supervisor will provide training specific to your role, and they will be available throughout your shift to support you as needed. START VOLUNTEERS

The role of start corral volunteers is to regulate access into the start corrals and to control the forward progress of participants through the start corrals. Each volunteer is assigned to a specific corral. Within each corral, volunteers will be assigned by their corral supervisors to one of three positions.

• Sign holder: Hold tall corral signs to make each corral easily identifiable to participants.

• Gatekeeper: Stand at the corral entrance and verify that each participant entering has a valid bib number (i.e. the participant bib matches the corral).

• Rope holder: Form a line stretching from curb to curb on the roadway. Hold the yellow rope to create a barrier between corrals. At the direction of your corral supervisor, slowly move forward as the race starts.

Once all participants have crossed the start line, each start corral volunteer will have a post-start role to complete before the end of their shift. Specific tasks will be assigned to each corral. This role could include any of the following tasks: assist with the start of a later corral, assist event staff with start line teardown, help to roll up banners and fencing or pick up discarded clothing items at the start line. These items will be donated as part of the event’s sustainability initiative.

FINISH VOLUNTEERS

Finish volunteers will fill the following roles.

• Finish Line Runner Refreshment: Volunteers will be in the food and water distribution area after the Finish Line, where their responsibilities will include setting up tables, unpacking food items, distributing food and water to participants, keeping the area clean and organized and assisting with cleanup.

• Finish Line People Movers: Volunteers help keep the finish line area safe by controlling traffic flow throughout the area, continually encouraging runners to keep moving and assisting the race photographers with their setup.

• Finish Line Medals: Volunteers get the opportunity to officially award all race finishers! Volunteers will assist with unpacking, organizing and distributing medals to participants as they cross the finish line.

• Saturday Event Set-up: This volunteer project will take place on the Saturday of event weekend in preparation for race day. Volunteers will assist with general event set-up alongside fellow volunteers and event staff. Tasks may include unpacking finisher medals, setting up gear check boxes and other event support as needed.

SUSTAINABILITY VOLUNTEERS

Sustainability volunteers are part of the event’s Green Team. This is a hands-on position and requires outgoing volunteers energized to make a difference! Volunteers will assist runners to correctly recycle and compost specific products distributed by the event such as water bottles, beer cups, Nuun Hydration cups, banana peels and food.

PARTICIPANT SERVICES (GEAR CHECK AND INFO TEAM) VOLUNTEERS

Participant Services volunteers will fill the following roles.

• Gear Check: Volunteers will be stationed in the Gear Check facility where they will collect and organize gear check bags from participants before the race as well as returning bags after the race.

• Info Team: Info Team volunteers assist race participants, spectators and other volunteers by providing general information and answering any questions they may have about the event, as well as giving directions to key destinations in Garfield Park. For this assignment, volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and should be able to stand for four or more hours.

RACE DAY FESTIVAL VOLUNTEERS

Race Day Festival volunteers will fill the following roles.

• Beer Distribution: Volunteers will be stationed in the beer tent located inside the Festival, where they will pour and serve beer to participants ages 21 and over, as well as help keep the area clean and organized. All volunteers will assist with ID checking for a portion of their shift. Please note that all volunteers must be 21 years of age or older for this position.

• Festival Activation: Volunteers will be stationed at a variety of activations at the Festival. Tasks include assisting participants with the photo activation stations and yard games.

SECTION 4: COURSE VOLUNTEERS

The Bank of America Chicago 13.1 course starts and finishes in Garfield Park with scenic loops through Douglass and Humboldt Parks.

Volunteers supporting course operations should be aware of the following.

What are the responsibilities of a course volunteer?

• Aid Station Volunteer: Volunteers will distribute water and Nuun Hydration to race participants as well as assist with the setup and cleanup of the Aid Station.

• Bike Marshal: Bike Marshals ensure that the course is clear of spectators in advance of the professional wheelchair athletes and runners.

• Course Marshal: Course marshal responsibilities include making sure the course stays clear of traffic and vehicles, ensuring the safety of participants and spectators and acting as a source of information about the event and surrounding neighborhood. Course marshal volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and should be able to stand for four or more hours.

• Gel Station Volunteer: Volunteers will distribute Maurten Gels to participants on course as well as assist with the setup, upkeep and cleanup of this station.

Course volunteers report directly to their Aid Station or Gel Station Check-In location located along the course. Please refer to your race week confirmation email for your specific location details.

• Parking: If you plan on driving, please be aware of street closures and plan extra travel time to accommodate for traffic. Please reach out to your Captain before race day to discuss parking options.

Where do I check in for my shift if I am a Course Marshal?

Course marshals will check in at the Garfield Park Volunteer Compound and be transported to their posts on course. When you arrive, follow event signage to reach the Garfield Park Volunteer Compound. SECTION 5: MEDICAL VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers supporting the medical team should be aware of the following.

What are the responsibilities of a medical volunteer?

Medical volunteers are responsible for assisting with the safety of and providing medical care to runners, spectators and other event staff and volunteers. Assignments will be determined by the Medical Committee and communicated in your Race Week Confirmation Email. Please note that your assignment may change at the discretion of the Medical Committee on race morning based on race day conditions and volunteer attrition.
