ctober showcased a weeklong of one of the utmost prominent events in So-Cal and the only Bi-national fashion event in the world, Fashion Week San Diego 2017 (FWSD) ñ a synchronicity of hair and make-up artists, l m, culture, and fashion emerged together to highlight a decade of the trending fashion industry in San Diego. FWSD 2017 celebrated its tenth year anniversary! ì 10 years of celebrating women and young girls that are an inspiration and continue to lead the world. As we celebrate the past decade, Ií m looking forward to everyone coming together and sharing their incredible talent on the runway and off. Our diverse backgrounds and stories are enriching and light up our lives. Seeing this originality channel make its way into fashion and art is truly a sight to behold.î Said Allison Andrews, founder and director of FWSD. This year the runway featured natural points of fashion created by 18 talented designers whose ready to wear fashion incorporated neutrals, prints, and glamour that reect ed a boost of inspiration for the body and soul awaking the fashion spirit in all of our wardrobes. On the front lines of FWSD 2017 people were not only talking about up and coming fashion trends but of the avant-garde regional cultural fashion exchange; successfully merged by the participation of various designers with different backgrounds and styles including Latina and Latino designers like BAZA, Hola Swim, Oseas Villatord, RACA Designs, and Saul Lizcari whose participation in San Diegoí s Fashion week infused the runway with edgy designs inspired by their culture to bring a unique style to the catwalk. After a year of hard work the Mexican designer Miriam Baza received the top dede signer award for FWSD 2017. The designer and creator of BAZA was born in Mazatl· n, Mexico and began designing since she was 12 years old. Miriam Baza continues to pursue her dreams and passions of an haute couture atelier with the designs of her glamourous dresses are delicately hand made using tulle, lace, organza, with original embroidered details that only a creative artist such as Miriam could achieve. CLM: Tell us about the evolution of the business, how was Celebrando Latinas Conference born? Fanny: At 38 years old I found myself with a perfect life, three sons, and a successful business; however, I had a huge depression, I was physically exhausted and I was overweight. Searching for answers I began to look for workshops and seminars to help me heal and I realized that I was there for everyone else. I took care of my family, my friends and my employees with money, time and favors which ogot· , capital of Colombia, a city whose tag line is ì Very drained my energy and my resources until I reached this very low Noble and Very Loyalî ; with 613 square miles and just over 8 point. I realized that I did not like myself. I put a stop to everything and million inhabitants. This modern and metropolitan city, with I began to take care of myself and to learn how to love myself. Without any experience and my education still in the works I decided to commit and make the newspaper successful. After just a couple of years the other partners, including my siblings, withdrew from the project and I made the decision to stick with it, a risk that at the time meant that I could lose everything. Now with thirty years into the newspaper business, the creation of Celebrando Latinas Conference and now with the magazine launch, I realize how much my life has changed, and taking that huge risk was well worth it.

##+,-%#,.#&%/$0 CLM: Your business is mainly directed to the Latino Community, what does that mean for you? Fanny: I grew up in the north of San Diego, I consider myself a rst generation immigrant. In the South San Diego region there are some Hispanic communities of third and fourth generations who are more connected to the local culture. I think that because I still have my hispanic roots so present in my lifestyle, being a Latina is on the forefront of my personality and I think a big portion of my audience identies with that. Therefore, it is so important for me that the Hispanic community has access to information and communication channels in their language, so that they can connect to the American society. I think that what began as a business opportunity when I was 21 has now become a responsibility, and truly a pleasure to be able to oer this connection to the Latino audience. CLM: With the launching of the magazine, once more you are reinventing yourself as a woman, what were the factors in your life who gave way to this innovation? Fanny: Ià ve had the bug of creating a magazine for a few years now, but it was thanks to the feedback that we received from the attendees of Celebrando Latinas Conference who continuously insisted that one day a year was just not enough, that they needed continuity. That is how I decided to take the plunge and nally turn this goal into a reality. And I plan to continue paving the road with workshops throughout the year and events that provide this support for the Latina woman. CLM: Lastly, what message would you like to leave us with for all the Latinas that share similar stories? Fanny: To listen to themselves. The internal voices we hear daily, whether positive or negative are important, we must learn to listen to them and be aware. Awareness is a great tool to learn your weaknesses and your strengths. And to never pity yourself but rather give yourself credit for all that you do and that you are.

s a shoe lover nothing gives me greater pleasure than to bring you this amazing section In Her ShoesÖ where we will get to see our featured guestí s favorite pair of shoes, a hard decision to make for sure, but more importantly what it means to walk in her shoes.
For Fanny Miller a pair of black Colombian pumps is what ts the bill, she bought this unique pair on her 50th Birthday trip to Colombia in Santa Martha. These babies can match anything from a formal dress to a pair of chic jeans, and their biggest contribution is how comfortable they are. Ironically, Fanny had never been a shoe lover (good grief!!) but during one of her Celebrando Latinas Conference she lost her shoes before having to go on stage and had to quickly nd a pair, luckily one of her vendors specialized in shoes and she was able to save the day, although she admits the impromptu blue shoes were not only uncomfortable, but being blue like her dress and the lighting of the stage she couldní t help but feel like Smurfette. This was the experience that made her an instant convert and she now pays close attention to buying good shoes that she loves. Walking in her shoes is a whole other story, as a mother of six children with ages ranging from 7 to 19, her days begin at 6:15 a.m. Getting the three young girls ready, some breakfast, making lunches, maybe coffee, feed the dogs, drop off kids, come back home and get ready for a busy day that may include meetings with clients, luncheons, sales calls, staff meetings, and at the end of the week on Thursday, Friday or Saturday you can expect to add to her day an evening gala, fundraiser or networking mixers. And often it might mean an out of town commitment. Every Friday she tries to go home early and spend some time with her family, watching a movie, out for games at a local amenity, or cooking together. It is no surprise that as a mod-
ern entrepreneurial Latina woman, her biggest daily challenge is the home making needs such as cleaning, and keeping the family on track of healthy living; she shares these chores with her children teaching them responsibility and service to the family. She has taken some very big steps in her shoes, steps that have literally changed the course of her life. When she took the step to jump into the El Latino Newspaper project at 21 she recalls that taking that step did not seem such a huge change at the time, she saw it as an opportunity and she stuck with it. In retrospect, it was the different stages that the newspaper has gone through over the years what has shaped and evolved her path. She had to learn the ropes, come out of her shell, learn to negotiate, and sell. As she puts it, sticking to it gave her no option but to grow up. She learned to pay herself rst, to take care of the community, get along with others and learn the business of it. She certainly continues to walk tall and strong every step of the way.

INGREDIENTES: 6 kilos de pavo 1/2 kilo de carne de puerco molida 1/2 kilo de tocino 1/2 taza de jamÛ n 1 cebolla 3 dientes de ajo 2 tallos de apio 1/2 taza de almendra 4 manzanas 1/2 taza de pasa 1/2 taza de vino blanco 1/2 taza de jerez dulce PREPARACIÓN: 1- Lavamos bien el pavo, secamos por dentro y por fuera y espolvoreamos con sal y pimienta al gusto. 2- Amarramos las alas y juntamos las patas. Lo colocamos en una olla grande, en agua con sal hasta que hierva unos minutos. Escurrimos. 3- Para el relleno: FreÌ mos la cebolla y el ajo en aceite, agregamos primero el tocino picado, luego la carne molida hasta que se cueza, el jamÛ n, las almendras, las pasas, la manzana y el apio. AÒ adimos 1/2 taza de jerez y dejamos hervir hasta que se reseque la mezcla. 4- Inyectamos el pavo con 1/2 taza de vino blanco. Desanudamos las piernas y rellenamos. 5- Volvemos a amarrar, cubrimos la pechuga con las rebanadas enteras de tocino envolviÈ ndolo perfectamente bien en papel aluminio. Colocamos en el horno a fuego medio durante cinco horas aproximadamente (una hora por kilo). Podemos pincelarlo con jugo cada tanto.
Brownies navideños INGREDIENTES: 200 gramos de chocolate amargo 200 gramos de mantequilla a punto pomada 250 gramos de az˙ car 5 huevos 100 gramos de harina 1 cucharadita de extracto de vainilla cremas chantilly 1 bolsa de nuez 500 gramos de az˙ car glass bet˙ n de vainilla Colorante arti ciale verde Dulces de menta blancos y rojos PREPARACIÓN: 1- En una olla fundimos el chocolate con la mantequilla. Dejamos entibiar. 2- En otra olla mezclamos los huevos, el az˙ car, el extracto (opcional) y la harina (no batir demasiado), nueces y mezclar con una cuchara. 3- AÒ adimos las mezclas en un molde untado con mantequilla. 4- Horneamos a 175/180∞ C por 20 minutos. 5- Cortamos los brownies en tri· ngulos simulando un arbolito. 6- Insertamos un bastÛ n de dulce de menta blanco y rojo en cada tri· ngulo. 7- Colocamos el bet˙ n en un olla y agregamos un poco de colorante verde. Decoramos.

Ponche de Navidad
INGREDIENTES: 75 gramos de mantequilla 75 gramos de az˙ car mascabada 1 huevo 50 gramos de miel de abeja 300 gramos de harina 1/2 cucharadita de canela 10 chocolates Hershey Kiss (navideÒ os) Colorante arti cial rojo Colorante arti cial verde Az˙ car (la necesaria)
INGREDIENTES: 7 rajas de canela 1/2 botella de vino tinto 4 manzanas 1/2 taza de pasas 16 guayabas 26 tejocotes Az˙ cares Hill Country Fare Ron 1/2 taza de piloncillo
PREPARACIÓN: 1- Precalentamos el horno a 180∞ C. 2- En un bowl mezclamos la mantequilla con el az˙ car hasta que quede una mezcla homogÈ nea. 3- Agregamos a la mezcla el huevo, la miel, la cocoa en polvo y continuamos mezclando hasta que estÈ n bien incorporados los ingredientes. 4- Agregamos la canela y mezclarla. 5- Incorporamos la harina y amasamos bien hasta formar una bola. 6- Envolvemos la masa y dejamos reposar en el refrigerador por 30 minutos. 7- Sacamos del refrigerador y hacemos bolitas con la masa, con el dedo hacemos un hoyo para al nal poner un kiss. 8- Horneamos por 15 minutos. 9- Sacamos del horno, empanizar con az˙ car pintada de rojo o verde y colocar el kiss.
PREPARACIÓN: 1- Lavamos y partimos los tejocotes separ· ndolos en un bol. Luego, lavamos y rebanamos las manzanas y guayabas. 2- En una olla hervimos la fruta partida en 25 tazas de agua, con el az˙ car, la canela, y el piloncillo. 3- Cuando las frutas estÈ n cocidas, retiramos del fuego y vertimos el vino tinto y ron al gusto. 4- Servimos caliente.
