NAHRI The Revenue Integrity Leadership Exchange 2

WELCOME Welcome to the Revenue Integrity Leadership Exchange! Revenue integrity is at a critical crossroads. Healthcare providers are facing increased scrutiny for pricing and billing practices all while navigating increasingly complex reimbursement rules, rising operating costs, and all-to-often elusive revenue. Revenue integrity is emerging as a key element in helping hospitals achieve accurate, defensible, complete revenue and reducing duplicative, resource-draining processes. With this opportunity come challenges. Revenue integrity leaders need to identify the most effective strategies to manage their program and prove ROI. It’s essential that they develop a sophisticated understanding of payer rules and requirements, both commercial and government, and parse out how these complex, intertwined regulations affect their organizations’ operations. They also need to think ahead by identifying trends in reimbursement, regulations, and the needs of the communities they serve. The Revenue Integrity Leadership Exchange brings together forward-thinking revenue integrity leaders to discuss how their organizations are approaching revenue integrity. Over the next two days, you’ll have the opportunity to solve common problems, share best practices, and build connections that will allow you to advance your revenue integrity program and your leadership journey. You’ll identify best practices and how to respond to industry trends and have the chance to recharge with your peers. We’d like to extend a special thank you to our sponsors, MDAudit and SmarterDX, whose financial support makes our Exchange possible. We believe you’ll find this time to be a valuable exchange of ideas with the companies that deliver essential tools and intelligence for the industry. We’re looking forward to hearing your insights and perspectives in the event sessions, and we also hope that you enjoy your time in Savannah and at the Hyatt Regency Savannah!

DISCUSSION GUIDE #1 Revenue Integrity Program Management Synopsis

Revenue integrity programs have become a key way organizations ensure accurate, complete reimbursement and identify and implement revenue cycle process improvements. Managing a successful revenue integrity program calls for a broad knowledge of the entire revenue cycle, a confident grasp of the program’s specific purpose and functions, and the ability to foster mutually respectful and beneficial relationships with other departments. During this session, participants will discuss their programs’ functions and structures, defining and maintaining program scope, measuring program success, and transforming their programs to meet future needs.

Key questions to consider during this session:

• What are your revenue integrity program’s primary functions? • How is your program staffed to support that? What job titles are included and what skills do they represent? Has that changed? • Does your revenue integrity program have a defined scope? If so, what is it and how is that determined, supported, and communicated? If not, why? • What are your program’s top priorities? Have they changed over the past 12 months? • What are some areas/functions you would like your program to be more involved in? And what are some you would like to be able to pull back from? • What are some of the biggest changes you think your program will undergo in the next 12 months? How would you like your program to adapt to meet your organization’s future needs and structure? • Are you currently using any KPIs to measure and monitor your program? If so, can you describe them and how they’re used? If not, why?

DISCUSSION GUIDE #2 Charge Capture Synopsis

Accurate and timely charge capture is a keystone of accurate reimbursement and revenue integrity. However, revenue integrity staff rarely enter charges themselves; instead, at most organizations charges drop automatically based on documentation or are entered by clinical staff. Revenue integrity’s support of these processes is necessary but complicated by the fact that ensuring charges are captured, auditing workflows, and implementing fixes requires interdepartmental collaboration and a nuanced understanding of the various departments needs and resources. During this session, participants will discuss revenue integrity’s role in charge capture, methods for managing charge capture workflows, reducing late charges, charge policies, and nurturing positive relationships with charge-generating departments.

Key questions to consider during this session:

• What is revenue integrity’s role in charge capture at your organization? Does it differ based on the type of charge/department? • What charge capture methods are used at your organization? Is one method used across facilities and departments, or are different methods in place at certain facilities or departments? Can you describe your organization’s (primary) charging process, from scheduling/admission through to charge capture? • How often are charge capture workflows reviewed? How do you decide to change workflows? What other departments are involved in reviewing these workflows and making changes to them? • Does your organization have backup charge entry process in the event of system downtime, etc.? Can you describe it? How often is this revisited and tested, and how are clinical staff trained on it? • What is your late charge policy? What role does revenue integrity play in monitoring late and missing charges? What are some strategies you’ve used to reduce late an missing charges? • Does your organization have formal charge capture and reconciliation policies? Do they define the expected time frames for capturing and reconciling charges? Do they address late charges? How often are your policies reviewed and who is involved in reviewing them? • Strong interdepartmental relationships and executive support are key to ensuring correct charge capture and reconciliation. How do you accomplish this? What are some roadblocks? How have you overcome them? What other departments are crucial to work with?

DISCUSSION GUIDE #3 Analytics and Reporting Synopsis

Good data is the basis of every sound revenue integrity policy and each decision revenue integrity leaders make. Obtaining the right data and being able to understand it ensures a program can function at its highest potential and be a success partner in guarding against revenue leaks, compliance risks, and faulty processes. However, at many organizations data is spread across different systems that don’t talk to each other. Different departments may analyze the same data in different ways and reports may not be shared with all stakeholders who could benefit from them. During this session, participants will discuss how their program leverages data and analytics to identify risks and opportunities, improve performance, and how leaders can address technical and organizational data bottlenecks.

Key questions to consider during this session:

• What data are your department responsible for analyzing and reporting on? • How are you accessing this data? What are some of your pain points when it comes to accessing it? • What are some of the key reports and data sets you rely on to do your job and to support your program’s work? Do you/your department own all of these reports and data? Which ones come from other departments? Are you able to provide feedback on how to improve them when necessary? • How are reports shared at your organization? Do you use these analytics and reports when meeting with other departments? • Do you have access to all of the analytics and reporting you believe you need? What would you like access to? • How are you collaborating with other departments to make the results of your organization’s data and reporting actionable? • What skills have you learned that helped you improve how you manage analytics and reporting? What skills do you encourage your team members to learn? How do you think this will change in coming year?
