FOUNDER’S LETTER
The bright lights of Hollywood have beckoned many seeking success and spoils. The pull of the place is quite cinematic in its own right. When we decided to dig a little deeper into all that glitters in this town, we chose to focus on 10 of the fresh young faces starting to make serious waves in the industry. And who better to capture these wunderkinds than one of Hollywood’s own, Amanda Demme—a famed music supervisor, label owner and promoter of It clubs of a generation—who is now channeling her creativity into a serious photography career. Like Demme, many of these rising stars are multi-hyphenates in their own right (think actor, producer, DJ, model, singer and online influencer), and it was fascinating to be on set to witness this collaboration of talent and artistry. Of equal note, cover subject Amber Heard has unstoppable determination. With delicate features and a charming personality that harkens back to her Texas upbringing, the actress is a force to be reckoned with both on screen (as seen in her upcoming film The Danish Girl) and off. The epitome of glamour, Heard is a modern-day bombshell. And the historic Paramour Mansion in Silver Lake was the perfect place to photograph her in this season’s sartorial splendor. And what would Hollywood be without red-carpet-worthy gems? In this issue, we showcase all the jewels every top stylist in town is clamoring for, as well as pages of the best and brightest baubles to inspire your own holiday wish list. Lastly, famed set-decorator-turned-interior-designer-turned-jeweler Tony Duquette’s touch is as relevant and current as ever. Sixteen years after his passing, the torch is carried on by his business partner, Hutton Wilkinson. The parties at Dawnridge, Duquette’s home in Beverly Hills, are legendary! So, we went straight to the source to get his tips on throwing a memorable soiree…the ingredients are a little bit of magic thrown in with a whole lot of sparkle. That about sums up Hollywood as a whole, doesn’t it? A perfect Tinseltown ending if you ask me…

France in 2003, and, after a long search for an L.A. location, Owens finally found one suitably off the beaten path. True to his subversive dishabille-luxe aesthetic (recent runway shows included women carrying each other like backpacks and men with crotch cutouts), Owens imagined the glass tank with a “serene bubble” that floats up periodically. To accommodate the idea, glass walls and concrete floors inside the decidedly minimalist space, devised with architect Anna Tumaini, had to be strengthened. Owens presided over it all from his Paris office, even fielding updates as the tank water turned acid yellow and faded to a “lovely murky green.” He credits filmmaker Cecil B. DeMille for inspiring elements of the gutted and reconfigured 1920s warehouse, including the massive concrete wall fronting the store. “Everything DeMille did was theatrical and a little bit epic and always overscaled,” says Owens. “So I might have learned that from him.” 819 N. Rick Owens hasn’t been back to Los Angeles in 14 years, but his command of Hollywood lore remains impeccable. Take the Paris-based designer’s new La Brea Avenue boutique. Owens’ account of its construction evokes the opening lines of Sunset Boulevard: “He always wanted a pool. Well, in the end, he got himself a pool—only the price turned out to be a little high.” The new space, stocked with ready-to-wear for women and men (plus the supple leather jackets and high-top sneakers that sparked Owens’ cultlike following) opened in mid-October, but the designer says the shop was ready earlier, save for a massive water tank built into the stark glass and concrete structure. “I thought, conceptually, Los Angeles is about swimming pools, just as a funny cliche, and we had to have one,” says the 52-year-old designer, who grew up in the San Joaquin Valley and spent years in L.A. honing his craft after stints at Otis College of Art and Design and an L.A. trade school where he learned patternmaking. Owens launched his namesake label in 1994, after meeting Michèle Lamy, his muse and now wife. Lamy, herself a designer-turned-restaurateur, ran the fabled Les Deux Café in Hollywood. The designer decamped with Lamy to

Heartbeat, a single female lead characterdriven medical dramedy based on Magliato, debuts, starring Melissa George and Dave Annable. Says Meyer, “It is so obvious and so perfect for this day and age—it’s personal, authentic, informative, all in a sort of a sexy, unconventional, fun, lighthearted way.” The hour-long program, which is currently filming its first season, takes some creative liberties with Magliato’s personal life (facts: She does live in Pacific Palisades with her husband, a pancreatic surgeon, and their two sons)— but the cases in the show are all ones Magliato has personally done or studied. Training the cast was easy, says Magliato: “The actors had to learn how to operate in a day and the next day they are on set doing it like they have done it their whole lives. I was like ‘My God, I spent 17 years learning how to do that.’” nbc.com.

Who is Freda Salvador? It’s a query that Megan Papay and Cristina Palomo-Nelson, the co-founders of the three-year-old label, are often faced with. “We get calls from people practically every day asking for ‘Freda,’” says Papay. While their muse is fictional, the belief in Freda speaks to the power of the brand and highly coveted footwear the duo has created—namely d’Orsay oxfords and ankle boots that are now house signatures. “We both have a mutual adoration of Frida Kahlo, and ‘Salvador’ is for El Salvador, where Cristina is from and where we made our first pair of shoes,” says Papay, who met Palomo-Nelson while they were designing for Bay Area shoe brand Anyi Lu. They have since moved production to a family-run factory in Spain, but their creative hub is situated in an old shipyard at Schoonmaker Point Marina in Sausalito. In this 1,600-square-foot studio, peppered with shag rugs, mood boards,
animal hides and leather swatches, the spirit of Freda Salvador continues to expand. “This space bleeds into our overall look,” says Palomo-Nelson. “We might see two textures or two colors together and try and make it work in leathers.” Among the layers of tear sheets floating about sit 1950s airport chairs plucked out of SFO and World War II wardrobes for storing more leather. Says Palomo-Nelson, “[Each piece] is a constant collection of ideas throughout the year. You might not expect it, but Petra Flannery’s early fashion influences were of the bohemian ilk. Born in San Francisco and reared in Mill Valley, she eventually moved to L.A. to study at USC before becoming an agent at Elite Model Management, which she left in 2000 to pursue a career as a stylist. Now, the Beverly Hills-based mom counts Amy Adams, Zoe Saldana, Gwen Stefani and Emma Stone as clients. With awards season just around the corner, who better to check in with for her favorite items of the moment?

C Magazine’s 10th Anniversary Party
Commemorating 10 years of capturing the Golden State’s effervescent spirit and grandeur, C Magazine welcomed friends to a lavish celebration at the Richard Meierdesigned Gagosian Gallery in Beverly Hills. Held under the stars and awash in wanderlust-inspiring decor dreamed up by Los Angeles-based company Gypset Events, the night was a true ode to California’s creative class, bringing together guests like Konstantin Kakanias, Kelly Lynch and Mitch Glazer, Alex Israel, Larry Gagosian, Jacqui Getty, Todd Traina, George Kotsiopoulos, and Armie Hammer and Elizabeth Chambers. Farm-to-table bites by Malibu-based Jennifer Naylor were passed throughout the evening, as were drinks by Napa Valley’s Blackbird Vineyards, Purity Vodka and Avión Tequila. Much of the city’s landscape has changed in the 50 years since the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) was founded. Certainly, there are more juice bars and fewer mobsters, but there’s also the prolific output of the art world—high caliber, with more spaces to view it, and more artists making the metropolis their home. Similar qualities have marked fashion’s ongoing ascent in the city, with a solid group of designers proving you don’t have to live on the isle of Manhattan to be taken seriously. To celebrate these interlocking narratives, Wear LACMA founder Katherine Ross (wife of LACMA Director Michael Govan) took 19 California designers through the museum’s collection—now the largest of its kind in the western United States—in search of works they felt resonated with their brand’s aesthetic. “I love walking through the galleries to see what inspires them,” Ross says of the process, which lays a foundation for each designer’s limited-edition pieces. The range of the museum’s work becomes wearable: Continued on p.140

Competitive STREAK Athleisure is all the rage. Yet Tory Burch found a dearth of pieces that she would describe as “toned down and laid-back, where the function was a given and style was a priority,” which led her to create Tory Sport. There are few voyages more romantic or daring than the prospect of sailing the proverbial seven seas. The diverse flora and fauna of ocean life found therein has inspired epic Greek poems and great American novels. Now French jewelry house Van Cleef & Arpels has set its sights on the vast watery horizon with its new high-jewelry offering, Seven Seas. Earrings, necklaces, brooches, hair clips and rings—encrusted with diamonds, oval sapphires, cultured pearls and other equally precious gems—evoke ocean spray, churning waves, burnished sunsets, teeming schools of fish and the endless depths sailors imagined they’d encounter on daring maritime journeys of discovery. From her crimson lips to her perfectly coiffed pressed waves, burlesque queen and red-carpet fixture Dita Von Teese has never been caught in an “off-duty” moment—not even while exiting her beloved Pilates class. In her forthcoming tome, Your Beauty Mark: The Ultimate Guide to Eccentric Glamour, the self-styled star reveals not only a bevy of how-to secrets, but also her contemporary outlook and rare realness on the subject: “My book is for people who enjoy breaking the beauty rules and changing them, and not being ashamed to say that they like something the way that they like it,” she says. Here, the self-described “glamour evangelist” lets us in on her beauty inspirations and tried-andtrue products. What’s your beauty mark, so to speak? I’d like to think I’ve made my beauty mark on other women who may have discovered the power of glamour through me. I personally didn’t have many modern role models of beauty that I could relate to, so I looked to icons of the Golden Age of Glamour in the 1940s. I am an ordinary blond girl from Michigan, and so I try to inspire others that they can create glamour themselves too. What were you most reluctant to reveal in your book? I wasn’t really reluctant to reveal anything for the readers; I think that it’s open and honest! The cosmetic surgery section was tough, because it is such a touchy subject for people, and I wanted it to be rich with different perspectives, so I have a few of my friends and trusted experts weighing in along with my own opinions. Who do you look up to the most as a beauty icon and why? I look up to Carmen Dell’Orefice very much; we interviewed her for the book and I love the way she breaks down her “natural” beauty. I like women who embrace artifice, like me, and women who change the beauty ideals. I like other women who admit it takes work and that it’s not all natural. What does “eccentric glamour” mean? I learned the phrase from the amazing Simon Doonan, who wrote a hysterical and enlightening book of the same title. He included me in the book, and I loved discovering his name for this group of people Continued on p.140

In the 19th century, a craze for all things Japanese changed the course of Western art. “Looking East: How Japan Inspired Monet, van Gogh and Other Western Artists” explores this phenomenon, presenting masterpieces by artists such as van Gogh and Monet alongside rare works of Japanese art. “Looking East” is on view at the Asian Art Museum for a limited time, from Oct. 30 through Feb. 7. #LookingEast; asianart.org.
Doyle’s November 16 auction at The Paley Center in Beverly Hills offers fine jewelry by such prestigious makers as Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier, Bulgari and Tiffany & Co. The Crin Dining Arm Chair is the highlight of the debut collection by Steven Volpe for McGuire Furniture. Asked to reimagine the Antalya Dining Collection, an iconic McGuire design, Volpe designed the chair in an effort to rearticulate John and Elinor McGuire’s vision for the 21st century. The Crin Dining Arm Chair embodies the beauty of the debut collection with its soft, matte finishes, thoughtful curves, subtle design details, woven rawhide and graceful rattan supports. Using the same materials as the Antalya predecessors, Volpe reduced the scale of the rattan, bending it in a subtle but elegant gesture, and contrasted it with dramatic rawhide weaving and graphic brass nailheads; the result is totally contemporary.

RH’s newest offering celebrates the CLEAN LINES of midcentury DESIGN with high-end MATERIALS and an EMPHASIS on comfort “We can be difficult to work with,” says RH Chairman and CEO Gary Friedman. “We can be pretty stubborn about trying to make things great. We don’t like to take shortcuts.” When it came to finding designers for RH Modern, he cast a wide net. The thousands of products, from sofas to chandeliers, had to reflect the company’s distinctive edgy-luxe aesthetic. “It’s edited by our point of view, and we’re rooted in a comfortable, casual lifestyle, probably because we live in California,” says Friedman, who recently bought a midcentury home in L.A. Furniture designer Thomas Bina was one of several Californians to get the nod. “L.A. is so laid-back, and I think it represents a big part of my personality and aesthetic,” Bina says. For his Monterey line—coffee tables, consoles and a platform bed (his
favorite)—he used reclaimed peroba rosa, a Brazilian wood with a soulful patina. S.F.based designer Jonathan Browning, whose lighting collection is included, recently found a new appreciation for simpler lines. “I thought, why don’t I join them,” he says of the modern craze. “But I’ll do it my way. With my vocabulary: leaded crystal, rosewood, bisque porcelain and bronze.” As of early November, the work of Bina (who also collaborated on a line of reclaimed French oak furniture with L.A. designer Ed Robinson), Browning and old friend of RH, rug designer Ben Soleimani, can be seen, along with the rest of the collection, in the striking 24,000-square-foot gallery in West Hollywood. “We curate not just products, but ideas and people,” says Friedman. 8772 Beverly Blvd., W.H.; rhmodern.com. • MARGOT DOUGHERTY

If chef Jason Fox’s Mission District staple, Commonwealth, is the diner’s equivalent of the little black dress—all understated refinement any night of the week—his latest Mint Plaza exploit, Oro, is the crisp, white oxford shirt alternative. It’s classic, masculine and a little more casual. At the bar, sips of The Portola cocktail’s pineapple-tinged mezcal are a palatable precursor to heady fare like
chicken-liver mousse with fig-tea jam and pork sausage nestled in shelling bean salad. It’s all set against a bi-level backdrop, marked by a transparent staircase and accents like an octopusshaped punch container. Feeling adventurous? GROWING Wise Working among Venice’s tightly packed bungalows and businesses makes perfect sense to gardener Courtney Guerra. In this wildly creative community, “you can start to see spaces differently and not take things at face value,” says the former pro beach volleyball player and trained chef. Guerra has most recently put this exercise into practice at FarmSuperba, a former patch of asphalt located behind restaurateur Paul Hibler’s Superba Food + Bread on Lincoln Boulevard that’s now sprouting with edible plants. Guerra grew up in Simi Valley, graduated from UC Santa Barbara, attended the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone and worked the kitchen line and in the gardens at Napa’s legendary The Restaurant at Meadowood before moving to Venice in 2013. The sum of these experiences helped cement her reputation as a go-to resource for chefs, most notably Ari Taymor of the erstwhile Alma restaurant downtown, who worked Guerra’s esoteric produce into each of his dishes. She doesn’t view herself as a competitor

to the growers who populate the nearby famous Santa Monica Farmers Market on Wednesdays, “but I do have these different weird things that you can’t find,” says Guerra, who avidly forages for edibles in nearby mountains, too. At the FarmSuperba plot—which flanks the restaurant as well as boutiques The Golden State and Bassike—Guerra minds the beds and space-conscious vertical hydroponic garden towers, which look as if they might spring to life like characters out of a fantasy novel. In an amusing twist on the classic Joni Mitchell song lyric “they paved paradise and put up a parking lot,” Superba Food + Bread’s kitchen serves a form of parking-lot-to-table cuisine, where purslane, dandelion greens and various hard-to-find gems are harvested a few feet away from the dining room. “OK, what can we do here? What is it capable of?” she recalls discussing early on with the FarmSuperba team. The project’s broadened scope now includes yoga classes and plans for hands-on creative workshops. And because Guerra believes “everyone should have access to clean, safe, nutritious food,” she’s actively involved with local nonprofit and educational organizations. “We had this vision. Now it’s time to do it,” Guerra says, taking in the everincreasing fresh sights and smells of her latest environmental transformation. courtney guerrafarms.com. • JESSICA RITZ

With its 40-some worldwide food and beverage clients like L.A.’s Faith & Flower and New York’s Dominique Ansel Kitchen, design and concept firm AvroKO is famous for leveraging venerable historic structures into jaw-dropping paeans to modern gastronomy. Case in point: Ninebark, the firm’s latest project in downtown Napa, which spins the wooden and cobbled-brick bones of the fabled Fagiani’s Bar into a refined stage for its major selling point: chef Matthew Lightner. Wooed from his New York pet project, Atera, and fresh off two Michelin stars, Lightner’s trademark nature-inspired artistry reflects everything from his formative stage at Spain’s Mugaritz to his love of foraging. At Ninebark, Napa witnesses the chef’s first foray into fancy casual fare. Taste through the bar area’s “Provisions” like whipped lardo with hazelnut miso, paired with an upmarket whiskey Coke. Upstairs in the second-floor dining room, feast your eyes on Lightner himself in the open kitchen, while forking through fireflicked seasonal dishes like grilled avocado salad. Punctuate an evening by the openair rooftop bar, where cerebral drinks like an orange-blossom and honeycomb-laced pisco fizz echo the Napa Valley surroundings. And if that doesn’t put a twinkle in your eye, the canopy of starlight overhead should do the trick. 813 Main St., Napa, 707-226-7821; ninebark-napa.com. • CAROLYN ALBURGER

Napa Valley is of course lauded for its wine and posh hotels, but a new touring company is inviting visitors to indulge their inner gypset with an all-inclusive stay on the famed terroir itself. Beginning this month through January, Brooklyn-based TerraVelo Tours will decamp to the sun-drenched Napa Valley hillsides and set up nine luxurious safari-style tents on the estate of Pope Valley Winery. The rural retreats allow guests to take in the sweeping views from the comforts of a well-appointed, spacious tent, outfitted with Italian linens and plush memoryfoam beds.

But not Le Bristol Paris, the iconic 8th Arrondissement hotel that opened in 1925 and currently, fresh off a $150 million-plus revamp, looks chicer than ever. Its slew of stars—five for the divine property, three Michelin stars for its flagship restaurant, Epicure, and one for chef Eric Frechon’s newer 114 Faubourg—can claim some credit. Located on the most luxurious and fashionable street in the City of Light, Le Bristol draws guests in
proximity to the city’s most coveted attractions like the Grand Palais and Jardin des Tuileries. Rooms styled with crystal chandeliers, Persian carpets, period furniture and private terraces boasting jaw-dropping views, plus the serene new Spa Le Bristol by La Prairie, are further reasons to book a visit. In the 19th century, a craze for all things Japanese changed the course of Western art. Exposure to Japanese art and culture inspired many movements and styles and prompted leading artists like Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet to create works of renewed vision and singular beauty. Secret Weapon “I’ve had flashbacks of L.A. lately,” Danai Gurira sighs. “As soon as I’m there, I breathe a little easier.” It’ll be a while before the 37-year-old returns, as she’s in the midst of shooting the sixth season of AMC’s The Walking Dead in Georgia. “The minute I was announced as that character, my life changed,” she says of playing sword-wielding Michonne. Before that call, “I wasn’t getting approached everywhere I walked. And there weren’t tattoos of my face on people’s legs.” The actress and award-winning playwright is also returning to her roots with Eclipsed, now at The Public Theatre in New York before moving to Broadway in March. Focused on the Liberian civil war, the play features a strong female ensemble that includes Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o. “I find great joy when I get to see these black women excel in roles that are handcrafted around experiences they understand,” Gurira says. With yet another New York play, Familiar, hitting the Playwrights Horizons stage in February, Gurira is unsure of when she’ll land in her own bed: “I think I’ll be back in Los Angeles at some point. I do miss it…but everything’s been such a blessing.” • LINDZI SCHARF

FEMININE Mystique
Catherine Opie’s PHOTOGRAPHS of the ephemera from Elizabeth Taylor’s HOME reveal the depth and POWER of this illustrious woman Inadvertently, the book 700 Nimes Road became a visual story about the passage of time. When photographer Catherine Opie first approached Elizabeth Taylor’s people—Opie and Taylor shared the same accountant—about creating a portrait of the actress through her possessions, she had no idea that the movie star would pass away three months after the project began. Opie was left to capture Taylor’s things as they were slowly packed up and carted away to be sold in the now landmark Christie’s auction. Opie never met Taylor. “She would watch me through her bedroom curtains,” she reminisces. Named after Taylor’s Bel Air address, and inspired by William Eggleston’s work about Graceland, the book is a portrait of an ultrafeminine woman: photographs of silken dresses in almost abstract form; Taylor’s red baby shoes on a chair; shaded headstones for her beloved pets in her backyard; a portrait of Michael Jackson with a flowered clip attached to the edge; frames grouped together showing intimate moments with her many loves, and fuzzy sweaters and purses stacked by color and material. It’s also a dismantling of a life: Sparkling jewels are photographed slightly out of focus, then

captured in clear plastic boxes, numbered for auction. For Opie, watching the house transform and quickly become scattered was sobering and intense. But the book is also a beautiful homage to a woman who never did things by halves: Taylor was passionate about the people, animals and objects in her life. “The estate understood I wasn’t interested in the project in relationship to her celebrity. I was interested in the relationship to what is human,” Opie says. • ELIZABETH KHURI CHANDLER

If there’s one thing you should know about the actress Amber Heard—and maybe you do already—it’s that she drives a 1968 Mustang. Well, she doesn’t drive it that often, because she’s regularly on set somewhere far-flung (recently, London for work, though she prefers to sleep in her own bed at home in L.A.) and sometimes it’s in the shop (as it was at the time of our interview). And from time to time she takes out a rental car so she’s not such an obvious paparazzi target, which is something that’s only magnified since she married Johnny Depp earlier this year. But Heard, 29, is partial to the Mustang, which she had restored, probably in part because it reminds her of growing up in Austin. “Classic cars are for me the most interesting things in life,” she explains. “They’re difficult but they’re full of character. They have their own quirks and problems. You have to have enough guts to wing it. But in order to adequately love and respect them, you have to fight them.” In a lot of ways, the Mustang is like the gorgeous, freethinking actress herself, who has proven, over her years— from Guess model to the short-lived NBC drama The Playboy Club, to her recent nuptials—that she plays by her own set of rules. In her teens, after the death of a close friend, she declared herself an atheist, decided she couldn’t twiddle her thumbs in Texas, and moved to New York City to pursue modeling, which eventually led to a small role in the movie Friday Night Lights. Fast-forward a decade later and, of course, she returns home a couple of times a year to see family and ride horses with her dad: “I couldn’t wait to leave when I was young and got out as soon as I could, but as you get older you can appreciate these things a bit more.” When she was cast opposite Jesse Eisenberg in 2009’s Zombieland, she made director Ruben Fleischer promise that she wouldn’t be a sexy “cleavage zombie,” but a “true zombie” who was both “ugly and gross.” The following year, at a GLAAD event, she announced she was bisexual, and for some time dated female Hawaiian photographer Tasya van Ree. And in February, after a yearlong engagement, Heard married Depp, whom she met while making 2011’s The Rum Diary.
“I’ve never shied away from anything I want to do because it’s difficult,” says Heard. That includes learning how to pirouette and plié for her latest role, as a ballerina in 1920s Copenhagen in Tom Hooper’s new film The Danish Girl. Though many of her dancing scenes have been edited out in service of the movie’s storyline, Heard is still happy she took eight weeks before filming to train. “It was actually fun, and it helped establish the physicality of the character,” she says. “I’m an actor, not a dancer. My interest is in the performance. There was always talk that those scenes weren’t going to be in the movie, but I wanted to do it regardless.” In the film, which hits theaters this month, Eddie Redmayne plays the painter Einar Wegener, one of the first gender reassignment surgery patients. Wegener’s wife, Gerda, played by Swedish actress Alicia Vikander, struggles with the loneliness and confusion that results from her husband’s desire to switch genders. When Heard first came across the script, someone told her the project “wasn’t right for me,” she recalls, “so I knew I had to go for it.” Heard plays a dancer named Oola who poses for Gerda Wegener, also an artist, and when she’s late for a sitting, Einar puts on Oola’s shoes and stockings… and the plot thickens. “As a woman, I don’t know what I would do if I was married to that man, but I don’t know what I would do if I was Eddie’s character, either. But that’s kind of the point,” says Heard, who was particularly affected by the narrative. “I’ve lived under a microscope and I do know what it feels like to be different, and worry that who you really are isn’t going to be accepted.” As far as relationships go, “it opened up a whole other can of worms,” she goes on, thinking about “the limits of romantic love. After a certain amount of years of marriage do you automatically become ‘friends’ with your partner?” That The Danish Girl has just as strong roles for women Continued on p.140

ELEGANT SOIREES and exotic jewelry go hand in hand at DAWNRIDGE ESTATE as HUTTON WILKINSON continues TONY DUQUETTE’S dual PASSIONS
“If it’s not fabulous, it’s meaningless,” says Hutton Wilkinson, longtime business partner of the late Tony Duquette, set designer, costume designer and decorator to the stars. This mantra echoes his mentor’s more-is-more mentality on everything from china patterns to theme parties. After Duquette died in 1999, Wilkinson took over the business and bought the famed Dawnridge estate. Designed in 1949 by architect Casper Ehmcke to be a “baby Venetian palace,” Dawnridge may have originally been the smallest house in Beverly Hills, just a 30-by-30-foot box, a mere 900 square feet. Today, it sits on fiveand-a-half continuous lots of gardens, and the interiors, expanded in the 1970s, are layered in rich fabrics and adorned with exotic antiques. For decades it’s been a playground for Old Hollywood glamour. “Tony and Elizabeth Duquette would have a black-tie party once a month, complete with an orchestra,” Wilkinson recalls. “Ruth and I are a continuation of that glamorous tradition, perhaps the last

era of entertaining.” Wilkinson and his wife, Ruth, have built their own home next door to Dawnridge and throw parties on the property. Sometimes it’s an intimate dinner, and guests walk through the garden from his home to Dawnridge, and other times it’s a themed soiree, with surprise dancers and Champagne towers. His belief is that the host is responsible for making an effort, and whether the party size is four or 400, the effort is what guests most appreciate. “I always entertain at home, not in restaurants. Dawnridge is my home, my headquarters, it’s a party house for me,” Wilkinson says. Also the president of the Elsie de Wolfe Foundation, Wilkinson takes additional cues from the lady known to throw cocktail parties in her bathroom, putting flowers in the tub and Champagne in the sink. Agreeing the dining room may be the most useless room in the house, he often turns it into a dance floor and believes in being unpredictable. Continued on p.140

THE MUSEUM AS MUSE CONTINUED FROM P.56
Jeweler Anita Ko drew inspiration from a wooden surfboard made by Samual Alapai Kahanamoku in the 1920s, while Greg Chait of The Elder Statesman saw a Granville Redmond painting from 1926, California Poppy Field, and ran with it. The result is a cashmere sweater, scarf and hat imbued with the colors, and a T-shirt woven with the painting’s name. “When Katherine and Michael Govan took us through the permanent collection, it gave us a new appreciation for those pieces that often get overlooked,” he said. “That’s what’s so genius about this initiative. It sheds new light on those masterpieces.” For shoemaker George Esquivel, an ankle boot in a soft lavender hue came about because he kept returning to Indian Woman With Marigold, a painting by Felipe Santiago Gutiérrez. Proceeds from the pieces, which are available at the LACMA Store and on Far fetch.com, all go back to the museum. Besides walking the collection with the designers, Ross says her second-favorite thing about the initiative is that “we sell out of the product, every season.” Wear LACMA’s 50th Anniversary Edition will be available for purchase beginning Nov. 4; thelacma store.org; farfetch.com.• MOLLY CREEDEN

who aren’t afraid of being mocked for their eccentricities and aren’t trying to be like everyone else. It’s not always easy; I’ve been made fun of a lot over the years. For me, eccentric glamour is about the art of creating aesthetic drama and visual theatrics—making yourself up to be the character you want to play in the theater of life. What is the best beauty advice? Wear sunscreen, don’t smoke, eat sensibly, exercise. Why did you decide to release this book now? It’s been a five-year-long process—there was so much I wanted to include in this book. I wanted readers to understand the obsessions I have, where they come from and how important this thing called glamour is to me. It’s not about impressing anyone, or the kind of glamour that’s about having expensive things; I’ve found ways of having glamour when I had nothing. My first experience with glamour was found in a $2 tube of red lipstick; and I used to sew dramatic vintage-style canopies over my bed in the name of DIY glamour. I started dressing in vintage clothes because

I couldn’t afford the cool jeans like my friends. I love glamour because it’s about creating mystique and it doesn’t depend on being considered beautiful or young or rich…anyone can have it if they start to understand what it is and how to cultivate it. What products are topping your list this fall? I love looking for luxe, fancy powder compacts during the holiday season. Estée Lauder makes the best ones. I also hunt for them on eBay because they still make the refills for them. What is your signature scent right now? My fourth fragrance, which is called Erotique. It’s my masterpiece. Not commercially successful, which means it’s actually interesting! I can’t stand vanilla, fruity, candy-bomb perfumes. I wanted to make a perfume that smelled like a bouquet of rare roses held with a leather-gloved hand. It’s a blend of rose petal, cedarwood, coriander, pepper, leather and Bulgarian rose. I wanted a perfume that captures another time when perfume meant something different than “clean.” Perfumes were much more risqué and erotic in the past. It’s at shop.dita.net and hsn.com. What is your favorite beauty destination in California? I like to frequent Korean spas and I love the Esalen Institute in Big Sur for a getaway. What are the your favorite skin products you use to achieve such flawless skin during the colder months? I adore Retrouvé products, especially when it’s super dry. They’re ultra luxe, but really amazing. I also love Eminence skin care: I use the LindenCalendula Treatment cream, the Apricot Calendula Cream and the Stone Crop Gel Wash. It’s a fabulous line, all natural and smells delicious. • LINDSAY KINDELON

as it does for its male actors was of additional importance. Women, she explains, “are so grossly under-represented in this medium.” Most parts for actresses, she continues, are relegated to “narrow limited boxes, and you’re either sexually viable or you’re not. But until we start taking up our pens and our cameras and find a way to do it ourselves and prove that the system is outdated, then nothing will change.” Doesn’t she think her husband, one of Hollywood’s most important power players, could help make changes for women in the movie business? Is that something they talk about? “Yes,” reveals Heard, choosing her words
carefully for fear of divulging too much about their relationship. “I think that it takes people like him who have the ability to change and challenge this very old and tired system. And I think he and I are looking for our own ways to do that. I want to see him get behind the camera and direct.” Heard says she’s not quite ready to do that herself. For the moment she’s more interested in finding female-driven projects, “stories that don’t demean and demoralize women into these objectified roles, and more adequately represent female life in our minute complications and edges.” And, alluding most likely to a recent essay by Jennifer Lawrence, who complained about gender pay disparity on American Hustle, Heard adds, “when I make those movies, I will pay women as much as I pay my male actors.” Until then, you might spot her driving around town in that Mustang, which she refuses to relinquish, no matter how challenging it may sometimes be. “We’re in a love-hate relationship, but I won’t give up my baby,” Heard says. “I want my freedom.” •
ALL THAT GLITTERS CONTINUED FROM P.134
On some occasions, African dancers lead guests into dinner or a procession of Balinese dancers walk through the Southeast Asian-inspired gardens holding candles. Dawnridge has seen magicians, jugglers, opera singers, mermaids and Thai dancers—and often the food goes along with the theme. Only one caterer, Pasadena-based Kitchen for Exploring Foods, is allowed in the house, and for every other event Wilkinson uses a personal chef to make “the best Mexican food in the world,” he says. Hutton also frowns upon people who are too afraid to use their own wedding china. Growing up as a kid, he always encouraged his mother to use the pretty plates and the crystal, reasoning that whatever they chose all had to be washed anyway. Having put on parties for clients with sky-high budgets everywhere from San Francisco, to New York, Dallas, Palm Beach and Venice—a city he calls a pageantry of drama and theater—there is nothing too grand in Wilkinson’s playbook. Dawnridge remains his dreamy, magical stage, his very own old movie, where Champagne always flows and candlelight makes people look beautiful, and where there’s always room to pack in a few more well-dressed guests, because more is still more. •

Capturing the Golden State of Mind
Impossible Wardrobes, 2015 Rizzoli New York is releasing its monumental trilogy Impossible Wardrobes ($125), a multi-volume, slipcased edition that documents the three revolutionary exhibitions curated by director Olivier Saillard of the Palais Galliera in Paris, and performed by Oscar and BAFTA award-winning actress Tilda Swinton. The series, which melded fashion and performance art, began with The Impossible Wardrobe (2012), in which Swinton walked a runway in historical costumes spanning 200 years; followed by Eternity Dress (2013), where a live audience watched Saillard design a dress to her form; and concluded with Cloakroom (2014), which found Swinton studying the relationship between an article of clothing and its owner. In this image from Eternity Dress, which was staged at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, photographer Ruediger Glatz captured a hands-on moment as the couture collaboration neared completion.
