to Issue 11 of CDi. Summer is long gone; Halloween is behind us, and the run into Christmas has already begun. Our 60th year in business certainly feels like it has flown by. Reflecting on the company’s anniversary this year, it has been fantastic to celebrate with colleagues, customers, and suppliers to mark the occasion. I hope you received one of our replica minivans and bars of chocolate while reading the special supplement in the Auto Trade Journal, kindly supported by eighteen of our key suppliers. Throughout this year, we have established seven partnerships with new suppliers, reinforcing our commitment to bringing you the right solutions to a market that continues to consolidate. As a family-owned company, we appreciate the challenges presented to you by such changes, but we are focused on listening to you and delivering long-term solutions with our dedicated service and support. Braking remains at the forefront of our attention, as it has done for much of our history, as you will see by the comprehensive options we have in our portfolio. New relationships this year include First Line, Borg & Beck, ATE and more recently the Summit mirror glass

range. These brands have been well received by the market at a time when choice is diminishing, and new private label solutions start to become available. Alongside these new ranges, our Commercial team has worked tirelessly with all suppliers to improve availability with range expansion and new-to-range creations, supported with a significant stock investment by the company on the island. A big thanks to all colleagues for this work and for getting products through the warehouses and available to sell faster than we have ever done, thanks to improved process and the ongoing roll out of our warehouse management system. I have no doubt that these improvements will only continue thanks to the hard work of colleagues in all sites. At the end of September, the team leading MechanExpert, our training initiative, delivered the final three of this year’s nine roadshows with fantastic success. Turnout from garages was excellent. Many thanks to the supporting Motor Factor customers for hosting these events, it was much appreciated. Partnering together worked extremely well, allowing us to finish the shows on a high. The support from our supply partners is invaluable and I am genuinely looking forward to seeing where MechanExpert can go in the future, with additional suppliers looking to commit their support from

next year, so we can continue these high-quality events. Battery Care To avoid many battery related issues, as well as the risk of vehicle breakdown, regular battery checks, along with a little maintenance will pay dividends because, as Ecobat Battery, the UK’s largest battery distributor, has found, statistically, 27% of the vehicles that enter the independent workshop either need their batteries recharged or reconditioned, and a further 11% need a replacement. Battery checks start with steps as simple as making sure the terminals and clamps, as well as where the negative cable grounds on the vehicle’s chassis, are all free from corrosion, and that the battery itself is securely fastened in its cradle. However, the battery’s state of health also needs to be assessed and that means it has to be tested with a tool, such as Ecobat Battery’s EBT780 battery analyser, because even when disconnected, a typical lead acid SLI (starter/lights/ignition) battery will selfdischarge at the rate of 0.1-volt per month.

This natural discharge process is obviously exaggerated when the battery is connected because it is the only source of power to the vehicles electrical system when the engine isn’t running, so its numerous electronic devices – clock, alarm, remote locking

When these real-life scenarios are combined with cold weather however, the pressure on the battery moves to an entirely new level because, even without these ongoing issues, when the temperature drops to freezing, the battery can lose up to 35% of its power, which is why cold weather shows up battery problems so intently. So, even if the vehicle is used regularly, routine battery charging using a smart charger, like the Ecobat Battery EBC8, is a wise move. An important player of the air conditioning system

The fan plays an important, supportive role for the effective operation of the engine cooling and climate systems of the vehicle. In the climate system, the AC fan forces air through the condenser. High operation pressures inside the condenser and the temperature produced by the condensation process require an additional air flow supporting the heat exchange between the ambient air and the refrigerant inside. Cooling produced by the fan is crucial for proper condenser operation.

Typically, the blower is situated in the HVAC (Heat-Ventilation-AirConditioning) module located between the cabin and the engine compartment.

The radiator is essential for the cooling of combustion engines. In such engines, there may be as many as 4,000 petrol explosions per minute, each generating temperatures of up to 1,500°C. The cooling liquid, which is circulating through a cooling jacket, cools the engine block, as well as pistons, valves, gaskets, rings, engine head, and other elements of the engine.

Engine and transmission oil cooling Oil applied for lubrication plays a significant cooling role. The oil cooler receives the lubricant’s heat and exchanges it with the ambient air or the radiator coolant. It is typically the automatic gearbox oil that needs a dedicated oil cooler. Vehicles, driving with engine oil that is cooled by a separate exchanger, is a common sight. Especially in high-performing or downsized engine vehicles, a dedicated oil cooler is an important part of the system. In some vehicle models, the oil cooler is built into the radiator water tank. Here, the coolant plays a supportive role to the heat exchange process. In modern vehicles, an automatic gearbox oil cooler is often designed as a stand-alone unit, mounted separately in the engine compartment or on the engine block.
