Welcome to issue 7 of CDI. It has been 18 months since our last edition, during which time we have seen so much change, firstly through the devastating impacts of the pandemic, and then through the hurried implementation of Brexit. Like everyone we have had to continually adjust to the impact of the pandemic as it evolved and continue to do so. Our priority has been to ensure that all colleagues remain safe in the workplace and that we continue to offer a market leading service to our customers in a safe manner. We have complied with the multiple local restrictions set down by different government agencies. Today we still have many protocols in place to ensure the continuity of safe practices, such as daily fogging of vans and collection counters, regular sanitisation by colleagues and the wearing of face coverings. In dealing with Brexit, we have also had to adapt, by embracing new customs, tariff, and VAT procedures. Our suppliers faced the same challenges with some being completely prepared and others less so, leading us to open new supply routes for the flow of goods, sometimes taking weeks to get orders moving. Against this backdrop we pushed forward and implemented an internal change of ERP system, something that had been months in the planning, moving onto the MAM platform. This came with many challenges after ‘go live’ but I am delighted that the system is now stable within the business, and I thank you for your patience earlier in the year whilst we applied the change. We continue to work closely with MAM to develop the system further, specifically with work underway to enhance customer experience through the portal and with our catalogue offering. I am pleased during this period that we have also been able to invest in our Commercial Team. This, combined with a more user-friendly system, will allow us to focus on improving all aspects of our proposition, particularly around range and availability and investment in our brand portfolio. Already we have launched new brands including Mahle Behr, Meyle and Febi. Braking is a particular area of focus, and with recent changes to distribution arrangements, we are now able to strengthen our braking portfolio by supporting the Apec brand with complementary solutions. Evidence of this is our recently launched investment in Brembo, reflecting captive references of a premium brand only available from that supplier. As a Bosch strategic partner, we also have a range of braking products in stock. With our commitment to hold comprehensive stocks of all the brands we distribute, in our three locations on the island, I am confident that we are best placed to supply what you need, when you need it. Our dedication to service has been enhanced with the refreshing of our fleet, with 20 new Mercedes Sprinter vans since the pandemic began. This combined with the continual analysis of van routes, to optimise delivery schedules, reflects our commitment to continuously improve our service to you. As ever, our market continues to evolve, whether this be with the growth of hybrid and electric vehicles or new entrants into the market, with the recent acquisition of an Irish business by a large US corporate. As a locally owned family business this is not so much of a surprise and more so an opportunity. We are lucky that we can remain flexible and continue to commit to our supplier partnerships without having to change brands or follow a corporate strategy. This allows us to best serve the needs of our customers whilst ensuring you have all the tools to remain a strong business. With the interruption of our communications in recent months, I am glad that we have CDi back underway. GUIDE PULLEY BEARING FAILURE AFTER REPLACEMENT From time to time, our technical centre specialists are alerted to the premature failure of a guide pulley included in the Gates PowerGrip and Powergrip plus waterpump kits K015479XS and KP15479XS, which suit several 1.4, 1.5 and 1.6-litre gasoline Kia and Hyundai engines. This article will help you avoid such premature failure in these specific cases, while also serving to illustrate the general importance of observing the correct relative positioning of the elements of the tensioning mechanism, and the correct sequence and tightening torque of the fixing bolts.

DAMAGE TO THE GUIDE PULLEY

In most of the cases that came to our attention, the guide pulley bearing had failed, causing belt damage, loss of synchronization and subsequent damage to the timing mechanism components. As you can see in the photos below, the pulley completely disassembled in the process, with the inner ring detaching from the outer ring, among other things. Yet, on closer inspection, the true cause of damage became apparent. In all of the cases, there were traces of overheating of the guide roller (image 2 below), scuffs on the back surface of the belt along its entire length (image 3 below), as well as typical scuffs on the working surface of the tensioner pulley (image 4 below). SPRING RESTING ON TENSIONER PULLEY

The important thing to point out here is that the initial belt tension during installation is provided by the force of a spring (not included in the kits), which rests with one end on the engine structural element, and with the other end on a special lug of the tensioner bracket. After tension adjustment and after securing the tensioner with two bolts, it remains fixed, and the spring is not actually involved in the operation of the drive. Spring replacement is not prescribed by the car manufacturer if there is no visible damage. Yet this part has been in the same position for four or five years on end, and tends to lose its correct characteristics as a result of that. Therefore, the spring should be replaced, even though OE does not prescribe it. Moreover, pay attention to fixing the bolts. If you do not fix them, the spring might jump over the lip, which causes the spring to rest directly on the pulley after the installation procedure – rather than on the tensioner lug. This obviously means it will rub against the pulley during engine operation. This generates serious friction, causing mechanical damage to the pulley, as well as generating an enormous amount of heat. The heat transferred to the belt makes the guide pulley heat up, causing the bearing to overheat and the lubricant to leak out. This, in turn, results in even more heat generation on the bearing, with overloading and destruction as a consequence.

PAY ATTENTION TO THE ENTIRE DRIVE

This particular case alerts us to the importance of observing the correct position of the spring (as shown in image 5 below, it should not rest on the pulley), but there are more general lessons to be learned, too.
