At the Solutrans international transport trade fair in Lyon from 19 to 23 November 2019, the lighting and electronics expert HELLA will be presenting various product solutions that can further enhance visibility and safety in road traffic (Hall 3, Stand E229). Such solutions include, in particular, new lighting technologies and various further advancements. At the Solutrans, HELLA will also be showcasing a selection taken from its current electronics portfolio, including intelligent battery sensors, actuators, rocker switches and angular position sensors. In order to increase safety during transport or when loading and unloading commercial vehicles, for example, HELLA has included various warning lamps and beacons in its product range. A brand new product is also being presented at the Solutrans, the K-LED Rebelution, which combines design and state-of-the-art Edge Light technology in a single product. The light is visible through a circumferential, ring-shaped light band. With its black design and a height of approximately 60 mm, the warning lamp can be seamlessly integrated into the vehicle silhouette. The K-LED Rebelution generates an instantly visible 360° signal that can be seen from far off in the distance. It is available as either a flashing or a rotating signal.

In order to make trailers more visible in darkness and at twilight, HELLA has developed the Park Safety Fix (PS-Fix), an autonomous parking lighting system. The system consists of a battery-supported power source that makes it possible to actively illuminate trailers without a towing vehicle. The first series model will be available for sale from January 2020 onwards. The HELLA VISIOTECH technology also helps to increase occupational safety. It enables warning signals and symbols to be projected onto the ground. This technology has already been integrated into three products designed for special vehicles: the LED projection module and the two warning lamps SL60 LED and Module 50 LED Spot. In the SL60 LED warning lamp, which is particularly suitable for use during manoeuvring, the light beams of the LEDs converge to such an extent by means of the special lens optic with the result that a strip-shaped warning line is projected onto the ground. These projected lines can also be used for simpler vehicle navigation. The SL60 LED warning lamp is available for original equipment manufacturers and also on the independent aftermarket. Since November 2017, the ECE R48 regulation

has prescribed side direction indicators for trailers in order to draw the attention of traffic following and that approaching from the side, of cyclists and also of pedestrians to the imminent turning off of a vehicle. HELLA therefore now offers the modular rear combination lamp for trailers with an integrated electronic module for controlling flashing LED side marker lamps (“Flash SMLR”). Monitoring of the direction indicators (ballast unit) is also already integrated in the rear combination lamp. This is done in accordance with DIN 13207. For those wishing to convert from halogen to LED technology, HELLA offers practical solutions, for example with the new ECO18 and ECO26 LED work lights. Thanks to their compact size and universal shape, the ECO series can replace almost all the usual halogen headlamps. In addition, they have a light performance of 1,350 or 2,000 lumens and yet a power consumption of only 18 or 26 watts. The ECO18 LED work light is also available as a reversing light.

New technologies such as the Space Drive drive-by-wire system and new vehicle concepts such as the Schaeffler Mover are playing an increasingly important role. The main change as a result of this is the name on the boxes you receive. Coolant Radiators The coolant radiator comprises of the radiator core and water tank with all necessary connections and attachment elements.

Fans & Clutches Controlling the cool air flows as needed while minimising the development of noise and the load reduces fuel consumption and the impact on the environment. The purpose of the Visco® clutch is to provide traction to the fan wheel and to influence its speed depending on the temperature.

Expansion Tanks Due to the expansion of the coolant, a high coolant temperature leads to an increase in pressure in the cooling system. The increase in pressure is relieved by means of a valve integrated in the cap on the expansion tank.

Oil Coolers Using oil coolers to cool engine oils that are under a high thermal load, i.e. ensuring an almost constant temperature, has significant advantages. Oil change intervals can be extended and the service life of the engine increases. There are two types of oil cooler: coolant cooled and air cooled.

Interior Heat Exchangers The air flow produced by the interior blower is routed through the heat exchanger, which has hot coolant flowing through it. The thus heated air then reaches the inside of the vehicle.

Intercoolers More performance over the whole speed range, lower fuel consumption, improved engine efficiency, lower exhaust gas values, reduced thermal pressure on the engine – there are a large number of reasons to cool the combustion air of charged engines with intercoolers.

Condensers / Radiator Fans Mounted before or behind the condenser/radiator. They remove heat from the refrigerant or coolant via the generated air flow. An additional or more powerful fan is usually used in vehicles with an air conditioning system.

EGR Radiators Exhaust gas recirculation radiators operate along the lines of the following functional principle: One part of the main gas stream between the exhaust manifold and the turbocharger is fed to a special heat exchanger (=EGR radiator made of stainless steel or aluminium) where it is cooled and then once again redirected to the intake air. Through the cooling the combustion temperature in the engine drops, thus bringing about a reduction of the amount of nitrogen oxide.

PARALLEL vs TAPERED WIRE Why do some Kilen springs look different to OE?

Why a Kilen spring may be shorter than the OE... Some original springs are manufactured using tapered spring wire; where the thickness of the steel reduces towards the end of the spring. This generally produces a weight saving but also increases the risk of premature spring failure. To remove this risk of premature failure, Kilen springs are made from parallel spring wire, where the steel has a consistent thickness (diameter). To compensate, a Kilen spring may need to be slightly shorter than a tapered wire OE. It is designed to fit the application and, once tted will provide the correct spring rate, and ensure the vehicle sits at the correct ride height. There is a misconception concerning tapered wire springs; and especially concerning those with a minibloc (rugby ball shape) design, that all possess a progressive spring rate, and that progressive springs rates can only be achieved by tapered wire springs! In reality, tapered wire springs (minibloc or otherwise) can be designed to have progressive or linear spring rate characteristics. In minibloc designs however a linear rate is usually observed since the reduced material diameter towards the end coils compensates for the reduction in the spring’s external diameter - meaning that the spring rate generally stays consistent. It is also important to note that springs made from parallel (constant thickness) wire can equally be designed to have linear or progressive spring rate characteristics; by varying the pitch (gaps between the coils) for example. The danger with tapered wire springs however is that stresses can be almost the same throughout the total length of the material. The thinner wire coils towards the end of the spring can therefore experience stresses as high as those in the most active part of the spring, resulting in a signi cantly increased risk of breakage – something further aggravated by corrosion which is most likely at the end (transition) coils.

INTERNAL REBOUND SPRING - F.A.Q.s “What does a rebound spring do?”

Why are some KYB shocks shorter than OE?”

This is due to the presence of a “rebound spring”. During the first mass production phase of a car, OE struts will often contain a rebound spring. It is at this point that the KYB aftermarket shocks are released, exactly matching this initial design. After the initial mass production phase, some vehicle manufacturers are known to remove the rebound spring to reduce cost. This means when comparing a new OE unit with a KYB unit, there will be a noticeable distance in piston rod lengthsometimes by up to 50mm. This can also be the case when comparing a KYB unit with a cheaper brand unit which does not contain a performance enhancing rebound spring. It is worth noting the length of the piston has no effect on the ride height of the vehicle, this is determined by the height of the spring seat.

It is a metal spring placed around the base of the piston rod inside the body of the shock absorber. The purpose of the rebound spring is to protect against potential damage from full extension of the piston rod. This also adds stability on cornering, and adds extra resistance during moments of heightened body roll, increasing comfort and safety. The presence of the rebound spring makes it almost impossible to manually fully extend the piston rod from out of the body of the shock absorber. This is why there is a noticeable difference between units with and those without.

“When transferring the compressed coil spring and mounting kit to the new strut, the threaded stud doesn’t come through far enough” On some applications, it is necessary to raise the axle or suspension slightly to attach the shock absorber mountings. This can be done either with a drive on ramp or by raising the lower control arm / axle so that it is not fully extended. There are also tools on the market to assist with tting shock absorbers that have a rebound spring. They compress the internal rebound spring su ciently to be able to extend the piston rod to the required length to be able to thread the upper nut correctly. Take care not to touch the piston rod with pliers / mole grips as you will damage it and cause the oil seal to leak.
