FAMILY-RUN GARAGE DONATES VEHICLE

TO SUPPORT CHESHIRE COLLEGE

MOTOR VEHICLE STUDENTS

Cheshire College – South & West’s Ellesmere Port Campus has expanded its automotive training resources with the addition of a Peugeot 5008, donated by family-run local business, R&K Autos.

The vehicle has been added to the Motor Vehicle department’s practical training fleet, enabling current and future students to gain essential handson experience with modern automotive systems as part of their qualification.

R&K Autos has a strong relationship with the College, employing former apprentice Jake, who recently completed his programme.

“ We wanted to give back to

the College to show our appreciation for all the support and guidance the tutors gave Jake, helping him to succeed in his apprenticeship,” said Jake’s parents, owners of R&K Autos.

Helen Nellist, Deputy CEO and Deputy Principal of Cheshire College, commented:

“ We are incredibly grateful to R&K Autos for this generous donation, which will support so many students for years to come. We’re proud of everything Jake has achieved and wish him every success in his very bright future.”

Nick Lewis, Work Based Learning Programme Lead in Automotive,

Construction & Building Services, added:

“ We believe apprenticeships aren’t just about learning knowledge, skills, and behaviours — they’re also about believing in and supporting individuals to achieve their personal goals. When someone struggles, we put methods and teaching styles in place to help them succeed.”

The donation will directly enhance practical learning for apprentices and students on full time courses, providing the opportunity to work with real vehicles and develop the skills needed to enter the automotive industry with confidence.

A FUTURE I NEVER IMAGINED: HOLLY’S JOURNEY FROM CHESHIRE COLLEGE TO OXFORD UNIVERSITY

After studying A Levels at Cheshire College – South & West, Holly Simpson is studying at one of the world’s most prestigious universities — inspiring others to follow in her footsteps.

Building a Community at Oxford.

Within Oxford University, I go to Pembroke College, which acts as its own community, like a miniature university. I’m very lucky to have all my best friends within my College as they really help it to feel like home.

The collegiate system at Oxford is probably one of my favourite elements of my learning there, as I’ve gotten to know my tutors on a one-on-one basis. I find that they are always happy to make time to chat and go over anything which I find difficult which is unique. I am very grateful to have the opportunity to build relationships with such intelligent scholars.

How Cheshire College Prepared Me for University.

The College’s Future’s Programme got me to where I am today. It’s strange for me to think that if I hadn’t one day had a chance meeting with the University Admissions Coordinator in the library that I never would even have applied to university, never mind to Oxford.

Aside from this, though, I do believe that it really is down to the student to seize the opportunities and programmes offered at College and to make the best of them. It's about being given the space to take initiative before you arrive at university, because that it what it takes to excel there once you get in!

My Course at Cheshire College.

I am a bit of an anomaly in that I got into Oxford with 2 A Levels, a BTEC and an EPQ. I did A levels in English Literature and French, a Level 3 Qualification in Music, and I wrote my EPQ on English and French literature.

The facilities at College were great and the staff were always so helpful, ordering in French books for me to read for leisure when I couldn’t find any in the library.

Highlights and Opportunities.

I chose Cheshire College because at the time I wanted to pursue music. The music department was so much better than my high school’s sixth form, and I would definitely say that the time I spent performing with my band was one of my top highlights.

I was also asked to sing at the Higher Education Graduation Ceremony in my first year at the College, which was great fun.

I think my biggest opportunity was the Scholars’ Programme – I felt so excited at the prospect of going to Oxford, I knew I wouldn’t be able to let it go.

Enjoying Independence.

I’d met new friends, had new teachers and classes, and I just loved being in charge of how I structured my day so much. I think really leaning into being independent at College made the transition into university a lot easier. Results Day.

I think Results Day was my favourite. Feeling so relieved that I’d got my grades and subsequently got my place at Oxford, that I hadn’t let myself down, it was so joyous to go into College and chat to all my teachers who had helped me along the way. The conversations I had with staff throughout my time made me feel so grateful to have ended up at Cheshire College.

Advice for Future Students.

Do what you love. If you, like me, look at the subjects you love and wonder ‘well, where will that even take me?’, do them anyway. You’re bound to do better in the discipline if you love it, and even if it won’t lead you to a job, it will lead you to something else you love. Talk to people, get the most you can out of your teachers, and take every opportunity which interests you because you never know where you may end up.

CHESHIRE COLLEGE STAFF MEMBER

RAISES £865 FOR CANCER RESEARCH UK THROUGH WALKING CHALLENGE

A member of staff from Cheshire College – South & West has completed a month-long walking challenge, raising an incredible £865 for Cancer Research UK and surpassing her original fundraising goal several times over.

Anne Garner, a Learning Mentor based at the College’s Crewe campus, took part in the national ‘Walk 30 Miles Challenge’ in September — a flexible virtual event encouraging participants

to walk 30 miles over the course of a month to support the charity’s pioneering research into cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

For Anne, the challenge carried special meaning. Having been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016, and now proudly cancer-free, she wanted to give back and raise awareness for a cause close to her heart.

Anne commented:

“ When I was diagnosed with

breast cancer, I promised myself I’d do whatever I could to help others facing the same battle. This challenge reminded me how much good we can do when we come together – every single donation, no matter how small, really does make a difference.”

Setting out to walk one mile a day, Anne not only completed the 30-mile target but went beyond it, covering 33.53 miles in total. Her initial goal of £150 was quickly surpassed within 24 hours, inspiring her to raise her target to £500 — which she went on to exceed, finishing with £865 including Gift Aid.

Helen Nellist, Deputy Principal and Deputy CEO of Cheshire College, added: “ Anne’s commitment to this challenge is truly inspiring and reflects the incredible spirit of our College community. She has not only shown outstanding determination but has also raised awareness for a cause that affects so many people. We are incredibly proud to have her as part of our team.”

Reflecting on the experience, Anne added:

“ I wanted to do something realistic for me, and this challenge was perfect. You don’t have to run marathons or climb mountains to support an important cause – every step counts. I’m so grateful to everyone who supported me on this journey.”

Anne’s achievement has inspired colleagues and students across the College community, many of whom followed her progress and donated to the cause.

Cheshire College is proud to provide impressive facilities at all three of our Campuses.

CELEBRATING THE FUTURE OF

SKILLED TRADES AT CHESHIRE COLLEGE AWARDS

Outstanding students from Cheshire College – South & West were recognised for their exceptional skills and dedication at the annual Freemen and Guilds Awards, held at the College’s Ellesmere Port Campus.

The ceremony celebrated the achievements of students across a diverse range of disciplines and marked another milestone in the 57-year

partnership between Cheshire College and the Freemen and Guilds of the City of Chester.

Surrounded by proud family members, College staff, and representatives from the Freemen and Guilds, this year’s award recipients were recognised across a wide range of disciplines, from construction and motor vehicle technology to hospitality

and creative arts.

The Freemen and Guilds of the City of Chester, formed in the 12th century, represent 23 traditional trade Guilds including the Joiners, Carvers and Turners, Bricklayers, Clothworkers, Walkers and Masons, and Barber Surgeons. The Guilds were established to represent local tradesmen, maintain the quality of their goods, and support

the recruitment and training of apprentices.

Today, the Freemen and Guilds Awards aim to celebrate young talent in trades, ensuring the preservation and future success of these essential crafts.

Helen Nellist, Deputy Principal and Deputy CEO of Cheshire College, expressed her pride in the students:

“ These awards remind us of the incredible talent emerging from our classrooms, workshops and kitchens every day. In a world that is increasingly shaped by innovation and craftsmanship, our students are gaining the skills and confidence to shape the future.”

“We’re proud to continue our partnership with the Freemen and Guilds and celebrate the contribution of our students to local industry and beyond.”

President of the Freemen and Guilds of the City of Chester, and member of the Baker’s Guild, Sara Smith, commented:

“ It’s a pleasure to recognise the outstanding achievements of these

young people. The awards evening is a modern continuation of traditions our Guilds have upheld for centuries. They help us champion the skilled trades, support local talent and ensure these essential crafts thrive for future generations.”

Award categories included the Ancient and Worshipful Company of Bricklayers Award, the Saddlers and Curriers Award, the Painters, Glaziers, Embroiderers and Stationers Award, and the Weavers Award — all reflecting the breadth of traditional crafts represented by the Guilds.

Among this year’s winners was Mupindishe Kajese, who is currently studying Applied Science BTEC National Extended Diploma - Level 3, and received the Mercers, Ironmongers, Grocers and Apothecaries - Pharmacy Award. Reflecting on the achievement, they said:

“ I feel very happy to have won an award, at first I didn't believe it but then my lecturers said I had won and that I deserved it so I'm really happy, I've got no words to explain it.”

CHESHIRE COLLEGE STUDENTS LINE CREWE STREETS WITH CREATIVE POPPY TRIBUTE

Students at Cheshire College – South & West have marked Remembrance Day with a creative project, producing hand-designed poppies that now line Nantwich Road near the College’s Crewe campus.

The display honours those who have served in the Armed Forces and creates a striking public tribute for the local community.

The initiative was part of a collaborative partnership with Connecting Crewe BID and supported by Crewe Town Council.

Principal and CEO at Cheshire College, Jasbir Dhesi OBE said:

“ We are incredibly proud of our Visual Arts students for creating such a meaningful tribute. It’s wonderful to see our students using their creativity to make a real difference in the heart of Crewe.”

Kirsty Pettengell, Lecturer in Visual Arts at Cheshire College, commented:

“ The poppy illustrations are exceptional, demonstrating both individuality and a strong sense of purpose. Each student brought their

own unique style while meeting the brief with professionalism and creativity.”

“I’m immensely proud of how well the students have embraced the project and the quality of their final designs, which are on public display across Crewe as part of the town’s Remembrance Day commemorations.”

Graphic Design student Leighton added:

“ This project was not only really good for our work experience, but also was a great opportunity to be able to create something that would not only show our appreciation and our respects to the fallen soldiers who fought for our country, but also allowed us to work on something that had a great meaning and importance to everyone.”

Graham Saunders, Chair of Crewe BID and General Manager of South Cheshire Glass, said:

“ Remembrance has always meant a lot to people in Crewe, and this display is a wonderful tribute from the next generation. The students have created something that brings art, respect and community together, and they should be really proud of what they’ve achieved.”

The project highlights Cheshire College’s commitment to community engagement, providing students with practical experience in creativity, design, and project planning while strengthening local partnerships that enrich Crewe and celebrate important cultural events.

EFIXX ROADSHOW SPARKS INSPIRATION

AT CHESHIRE COLLEGE

CREWE CAMPUS

Cheshire College – South & West recently welcomed the eFIXX College Connection Roadshow to their Crewe Campus, delivering an engaging and interactive experience for Electrical Installation students eager to pursue careers in the electrical industry.

Led by Electrical Teaching specialist Gary Hayers and the eFIXX team, the event brought together leading manufacturers and suppliers

from across the sector to provide handson learning opportunities and expert career guidance, as well as donating materials and resources for use in both the classroom and the workshop.

Throughout the day, students participated in themed workshops covering key industry topics such as safe isolation, wireless switching, smart home technology, lighting systems, cable types, protective devices, and testing procedures. These sessions extended learning beyond the classroom, offering practical experience with the latest tools and technologies shaping the future of the electrical trade.

Lunch was provided by the College’s Academy Restaurant, where Catering and Hospitality students showcased their skills by preparing and serving meals for guests. Their professionalism and high-quality service were praised by all attendees, reflecting the exceptional standards delivered across all curriculum areas at Cheshire College.

Nathan Lundie, Electrical Installation Lecturer, commented: “ It was a fantastic day for our students. They gained invaluable advice on securing apprenticeships, which is increasingly competitive in our industry. The biggest takeaway

was that the only thing standing between them and becoming the best electricians they can be, is themselves.”

The event also featured Q&A sessions, networking opportunities, and prize giveaways, with students representing the College with enthusiasm and professionalism throughout.

Industry partners including Doncaster Cables, ROBUS Lighting, SCAME UK, Test Instrument Solutions, Niglon Ltd, Luceco Group, and BEAMA generously shared their expertise and donated resources to support the department’s continued delivery of high-quality, industry-relevant education.

Nathan added: “ The eFIXX team and all the manufacturers who invested their time in our students were a pleasure to work with. Their commitment to education and the next generation of electricians is clear to see. We’re excited to integrate the fantastic new equipment they’ve provided into our workshops.”

The eFIXX College Connection Roadshow continues to visit colleges across the UK, inspiring students and strengthening the link between education and the electrical industry.

CHESHIRE COLLEGE HELPS ADULTS CUT HOME REPAIR COSTS WITH PRACTICAL DIY COURSES

As the cost of living continues to challenge household budgets, Cheshire College – South & West is empowering local residents to take control of their home maintenance costs through a new range of practical DIY Household Renovation and Repair courses for adults.

Recent research highlights how many homeowners are investing in improving their living spaces despite financial pressures. A Compare the Market survey in March 2025 found that 52% of homeowners had renovated in the past year or planned to do so in the next 12 months, with

kitchens, bathrooms, and garden upgrades topping the list.

Home repairs can be costly. Research from Checkatrade shows UK households spend an average of £7,530 a year on maintenance

To help local residents reduce these costs and gain new skills

Cheshire College is offering Level 1 DIY Household Renovation and Repair courses at its Crewe and Ellesmere Port campuses. The courses cover plumbing, electrics, bricklaying, and joinery, giving adults the practical skills needed to carry out common repairs themselves.

Ruth Szolkowska, Vice Principal at Cheshire College said:

“ Through these courses, we’re equipping adults with essential skills that make a tangible difference to everyday life. Learners develop confidence, independence and the ability to manage household maintenance safely, while gaining the satisfaction of learning in our industrystandard workshops.”

Students learn in fully equipped, professional workshops, using industrystandard tools and materials, and benefit from small class sizes and expert guidance.

Cheshire College plays a pivotal role in driving skills development and economic growth across the region, providing training that equips students with practical, employable skills.

The courses start at various points between November 2025 and January 2026 and are aimed specifically at adults seeking confidence to take on repairs and maintenance within their homes without relying on costly external contractors.
