CHESHIRE COLLEGE AND BELONG UNVEIL DEMENTIAFRIENDLY TRAINING FACILITY
Cheshire College – South & West has officially opened the Alexandra Suite, a dementia-friendly training facility at its Crewe campus, in partnership with specialist care provider Belong Villages.
Designed to mirror a real Belong household, the Alexandra Suite, named by current student Luca Baker, provides
a highly realistic environment for Belong colleagues to develop practical skills, confidence, and person-centred approaches in care.
The suite includes a replica lounge, bathroom and bedroom with both a divan and profile bed, plus a manual hoist and stand aid to support peoplehandling training. Additional equipment
allows learning around communication, sensory engagement, and a range of care scenarios.
The facility reflects the ongoing collaboration between Cheshire College and Belong, combining industry expertise with tailored training resources to raise standards across the sector.
Helen Nellist, Deputy Principal and Deputy CEO at Cheshire College, commented:
“ By working in partnership with Belong, the Alexandra Suite provides a space where colleagues can refine their skills and students can gain hands-on experience, helping to develop a workforce that’s confident, capable, and ready for the realities of care. ”
Brendan Conlon, Learning and Development Manager at Belong Villages, said:
“ This facility represents much more than a training space, it’s a shared commitment to raise the standard of dementia care.”
“This collaboration strengthens the bridge between education and employment, helping to grow a workforce that is not only well-trained, but deeply connected to the values of high-quality care. As demand for skilled professionals continues to rise, partnerships like this are vital. Together, we’re investing in people, in innovation, and in a future where those living with dementia receive the exceptional support they deserve.”
The College continues to work closely with Belong, providing
work experience opportunities, apprenticeships and T-Level placements for students.
Tailored learning programmes, guest speaker sessions, curriculum enrichment activities and digital projects delivered in collaboration with
Belong, further enhance the student learning experience and strengthen employability.
The Alexandra Suite marks a major step in Cheshire College’s commitment to industry-led education and raising standards in dementia care training.

CHESHIRE COLLEGE PUTS
SKILLS IN THE SPOTLIGHT FOR NATIONAL APPRENTICESHIP WEEK
Cheshire College – South & West is putting the region’s skills, talent and career opportunities front and centre as it joins colleges and training providers across the UK in celebrating National Apprenticeship Week 2026.
Running from Monday 9 to Friday 13 February, the week formed part of a UK Government–led campaign highlighting how apprenticeships develop skilled, future-ready employees and drive local economic growth.
Throughout the week, the College brought together students, apprentices, employers and members of the public to explore how apprenticeships translate learning into opportunity. Industryled panels, a virtual conference,
apprenticeship and jobs fairs, and an awards evening highlighted the pathways, skills, and sectors where apprenticeships are making a tangible impact.
Organised by the Cheshire and Warrington Pledge, the College hosted The Apprenticeship Careers and Jobs Fairs—held at Ellesmere Port Campus
on Monday 9 February and Crewe Campus on Wednesday 11 February— connected prospective apprentices with employers offering live vacancies and allowed attendees to explore College facilities and speak directly with staff about available apprenticeship programmes.
Helen Nellist, Deputy Principal
and Deputy CEO of Cheshire College commented:
“ National Apprenticeship Week is about more than raising awareness, it’s about opportunity. By bringing employers, apprentices and students together, we’re helping our students understand where skills can take them and showcasing the
real impact apprenticeships have on individuals, businesses and our region.”
A highlight of the week was the Apprenticeship & Skills Awards, which took place on Thursday 12 February at Ellesmere Port Campus. Expanded for 2026, the awards recognised both outstanding apprentices and the
employers who support and invest in skills development. Categories span engineering, construction, health, business and more, reflecting the breadth of apprenticeship opportunities across the region.
Karen Roberts, Assistant Principal for Apprentices and Employer Engagement, said: “ The Apprenticeship & Skills Awards are particularly special this year. With the new format and expanded focus on skills, the event is bigger and more ambitious than ever, recognising both apprentices and the employers who support them.”
By bringing students and employers together, Cheshire College turned
National Apprenticeship Week into a platform for opportunity. From handson experience to real career pathways, the week showcased the apprentices shaping the region’s workforce — and the employers investing in their future. Held at the College’s Ellesmere Port Campus, the event brought together employers, apprentices, partners and stakeholders from across the region to recognise excellence across a wide range of industries. Formerly known as the Apprenticeship Awards, the event has evolved this year to include a wider focus on skills, reflecting the College’s commitment to celebrating progression, technical excellence and skills development alongside apprenticeship success.
Twenty-nine awards were presented on the night, recognising exceptional apprentices and innovative employers across sectors including engineering, construction, health, education, business. Winners were selected for their outstanding progress, contribution in the workplace, and commitment to personal and
professional development.
Helen Nellist, Deputy Principal and Deputy CEO of Cheshire College, expressed pride in the achievements of this year’s winners. She commented: “ This year’s Apprenticeship & Skills Awards represent a milestone for the College and for the region. They celebrate not only individual success,
but the vital role that skills, training and strong employer partnerships play in building a confident, future-ready workforce.”
“We are incredibly proud of our apprentices and grateful to the employers who continue to support and invest in their development.”
New for 2026, the College introduced awards recognising green skills and sustainability, highlighting the vital role apprentices and employers play in supporting a greener future.
One keynote speaker, Joe Hook, Project Integration Team Lead for Uniper, spoke about his experiences and highlighted the importance of green skills training in meeting the evolving demands of industry and driving the UK’s green economy forward.
Guests were welcomed with a drinks reception and canapes before enjoying a two-course meal prepared by students from the College’s awardwinning Academy West Restaurant.
Performance Coach, Business Mentor and Keynote Speaker Claire Brumby, who inspired attendees
with her insights on professional development and skills in the workplace, said:
“ What a truly inspiring evening. Apprenticeships offer an invaluable pathway for young people, and this ceremony not only celebrates individual achievement but also acknowledges the many others who play a vital role behind the scenes.”
Reflecting on the evening, award winner, Isabella Yates, commented:
“ It feels like a real honour to be an award winner. The support from both my employer and my assessor has been amazing. I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship, this is the way forward as you are gaining hands on experience alongside a qualification and a foot in the door to employment.”

CHESHIRE COLLEGE LAUNCHES NEW ‘GREEN’ APPRENTICESHIPS TO SUPPORT SUSTAINABLE CAREERS
Cheshire College – South & West is helping businesses prepare for a lowcarbon future with the launch of a suite of new “green” apprenticeships.
Apprenticeships combine practical on-the-job training with classroombased learning, allowing students to earn while they learn and gain recognised qualifications. Designed to equip students with essential sustainability skills, these programmes give employers the opportunity to upskill existing staff or bring in new talent to meet sustainability goals and drive innovation.
The new apprenticeships include:
Level 3 Low Carbon Heating Technician
36-month programme, training students in energy-efficient heating systems to reduce carbon emissions.
Level 2 Groundworker
18-month programme, focusing on environmentally responsible groundwork for construction projects.
Level 3 Engineering Construction Pipefitter
36-month programme, preparing students for sustainable construction and piping systems.
Level 2 Dual Fuel Smart Meter Installer
14-month programme, training apprentices to install and maintain smart energy meters safely.
Helen Nellist, Deputy Principal and Deputy CEO at Cheshire College, said:
“ These apprenticeships reflect the growing demand for sustainable skills across industry. By combining practical training with guidance from experienced industry professionals, we are equipping students and businesses to thrive in a greener economy while supporting the UK’s net-zero ambitions.”
Karen Roberts, Assistant Principal for Apprenticeships & Employer Engagement, Cheshire College added:
“ We know that taking on apprentices can feel like a big step for businesses, which is why we provide full support every step of the way. From onboarding and initial training to ongoing development, we make the process straightforward and ensure apprentices are confident and ready to contribute from day one.”
Employers benefit from fully funded apprenticeships for anyone under 25, meaning there are no training costs for the business. In addition, eligible businesses in Cheshire West and Chester can access up to £10,000 in funding to support the recruitment
of clean energy apprentices. The funding package includes recruitment and training provider support, Digital Apprenticeship Service guidance, and employer mentoring and coaching. Beyond funding, the programmes help companies build a skilled workforce, boost staff retention, and develop future leaders. Whether recruiting new talent or upskilling current employees, apprenticeships provide real-world experience that strengthens both teams and organisations.
Cheshire College works with employers directly involved in the HYNet project, including key partner Progressive Energy, the architect and lead partner of the UK’s leading industrial decarbonisation cluster. By aligning its new green apprenticeships with major low-carbon initiatives such as HYNet, the College ensures students gain the skills needed for sustainable careers while supporting the region’s journey to Net Zero. Progressive Energy was also recognised at the College’s Apprenticeship and Skills Awards 2026 for its commitment to developing skills. This commitment to future-focused skills is further strengthened by the College’s new Cheshire and Warrington Institute of Technology building at its Crewe Campus. The £14.2 million facility provides industry-standard training in high-demand sectors such as engineering, construction and computing, ensuring apprentices and students benefit from cutting-edge technical education aligned to the needs of a low-carbon economy.
Cheshire College works closely with businesses across the region to ensure apprentices develop the skills employers need, helping create a workforce ready to tackle the challenges of a low-carbon economy.
