NATIONAL SUCCESS AS HIGHEST-RANKING ENGLISH COLLEGE AT WORLDSKILLS UK FINALS
Cheshire College – South & West has been confirmed as the highest-ranking English college at the WorldSkills UK National Finals 2025, securing ten

medal points and achieving joint fourth place overall. More than 400 students from across the UK competed in 47 skill
areas following months of intense qualifying rounds. Creative Media student at Cheshire College, Lewis Francom, secured gold
in 3D Digital Game Art. Reflecting on his success, Lewis said: “ It felt unreal both winning and proving the quality of our college by winning gold. The experience of the finals was both fun and the training was challenging. However, anyone wanting to try their hand at WorldSkills, all I can say is have a go as you'll never know what it will lead to.” Lewis’s lecturer, Iain McCluskey, added: “ I’m incredibly proud of all the finalists from our College for the dedication and commitment they’ve shown throughout the 2025 competition cycle. Lewis, in particular, demonstrated outstanding resilience, and he truly reflects the high standards we expect from Chester Games Development students. This achievement is thoroughly deserved, and I couldn’t be prouder.” Hospitality students, Leah Wood and Rhianna Pool won Gold and Highly Commended in Restaurant Service. Their lecturer, John Holden, expressed his pride, saying: “ Leah and Rhianna worked every week, vigorously practising for the final; their passion, drive and motivation shone through over the two days. I am not only pleased with the result but immensely proud of their result and honoured to be their Tutor.” In addition, A Level student Jess Chesters received Highly Commended
in Graphic Design, further contributing to the College’s strong overall performance.
Principal and CEO Jasbir Dhesi OBE commented: “ Congratulations to all students who took part. Reaching the national finals is a huge achievement.” “Our students have shown exceptional focus, skill, and dedication throughout the competition, and being named the highest-ranking English college is an outstanding accomplishment. INNOVATION IN LEARNING AWARD AT GREEN EXPO AWARDS Cheshire College – South & West has been named the winner of the Innovation in Learning Award at the Green Expo 2025 Awards, recognising the College’s pioneering approach to sustainable construction education. The award highlights innovation across the provider but particularly at the Ellesmere Port campus, where
students gain hands-on experience in a fully functioning Net Zero Sustainable House — a unique training space equipped with the latest sustainable technologies, such as ground source heat pumps and photovoltaic solar panels. The house has been designed to mirror the technologies and design
principles used in modern low-carbon homes, giving students the opportunity to install, maintain, and analyse real working systems. Students across electrical, plumbing, building surveying, and planning courses can explore, examine, and work directly on sustainable systems. This practical approach

equips students with the skills the UK construction sector urgently needs, helping to tackle the national skills shortage. Helen Nellist, Deputy Principal and Deputy CEO, commented: “ Winning the Innovation in Learning Award reflects our commitment to combining practical

skills with forward-thinking approaches. From our sustainable house to other projects across campuses, we’re continually finding new ways to prepare students for the challenges of the modern workforce while pushing the boundaries of education.” Karen Roberts, Assistant Principal,
Apprenticeships & Employer Engagement, said: “ Our sustainable house is a learning environment for all students including those on full-time courses, adult students, and apprentices. It gives everyone the chance to explore and work with real-world sustainable construction systems, gaining practical experience that they can’t get in a classroom alone.” Karen added: “ We are truly grateful to receive this recognition. It reflects the hard work and dedication of our staff and students and motivates us to continue advancing learning and sustainability initiatives.” The College’s Academy West hospitality team also contributed to the awards evening, catering the event with a menu built around seasonal, sustainable, and locally sourced produce, reflecting Cheshire College’s wider commitment to sustainability across curriculum. Alongside teaching sustainable construction, the College leads by example, having recently completed a £6.2 million decarbonisation programme significantly lowering its carbon footprint across all three campuses.

CHESHIRE COLLEGE LECTURER ANNOUNCED AS RUNNER-UP FOR
PRESTIGIOUS GOOD FOR ME GOOD FOR FE AWARD Cheshire College – South & West is celebrating Loui Frost, Foundation Maths Lecturer, who has been named runner-up for the Individual Fundraiser of the Year at the Good for Me Good for FE Awards 2025. These national awards celebrate exceptional contributions in the Further Education sector, highlighting volunteering and fundraising initiatives that deliver meaningful impact within local communities. Loui attended the finals in London, where the results were revealed during a House of Lords reception hosted by Baroness Nicky Morgan on 5 December.
Loui was nominated due to her dedication and hard work leading the College’s first-ever Christmas Fayre. The event involved students, staff, and members of the local community raising over £800 for Hope Café, a charity providing essential support to asylum seekers. The event included a wide range of stalls and activities, many designed and run by students under Loui’s guidance. It has now become an annual tradition, credited with boosting community engagement and providing students with hands-on experience in event management, teamwork, and
fundraising. Reflecting on the achievement, Loui said: “ It was such a privilege to be able to visit the House of Lords and meet really inspiring fundraisers and volunteers from colleges across the country. It gave us lots of ideas for how we can engage our students in social action, and we're starting to plan something even bigger for next year!” Principal and CEO Jasbir Dhesi OBE added: “ Loui’s dedication and leadership have made a real difference to the College and the wider community. She has inspired students to get involved and shown how one person’s initiative can have a lasting impact.” Cheshire College – South & West is proud to see Loui recognised nationally and celebrates her achievement as runner-up for this prestigious award.

FINDING THE RIGHT PATH SAM’S JOURNEY FROM CHESHIRE COLLEGE TO A PROJECT MANAGEMENT APPRENTICESHIP
After completing A Levels in Politics, Economics, and Business at Cheshire College earlier this year, Sam Linde has begun a Project Management Degree Apprenticeship at civil engineering company Ringway Jacobs, taking the next step in his career with confidence.
A Standout Moment – Student Awards. One of the highlights for me was receiving awards for my achievements. It felt special to have my efforts recognised. When I started college, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my career. But through exploring subjects and opportunities, I discovered my passion and became motivated toward my goals. It was amazing that others noticed that drive developing in me.

Support That Makes a Difference. The opportunities at Cheshire College are unmatched. Tutor sessions, the Futures Scheme, talks with professionals, and the relationships you build with teachers were key in shaping my mindset. My teachers like Lauren and Ben were especially supportive — they helped me unlock my potential and cheered me on the whole way. From College to Career. I’m now doing a Project Management Apprenticeship at Ringway Jacobs. I wanted a career that blended learning with practical work, and this role fits perfectly. Being able to apply what I’ve learned directly in my job makes it both challenging and rewarding.
Advice for Students. I would say throw yourself into it. Explore every opportunity, talk to your teachers, join programs, and find what motivates you. AWARDED PLACE AT NATIONAL LILAC CONFERENCE A Cheshire College – South & West colleague has been awarded a place at the Librarians’ Information Literacy Annual Conference (LILAC), one of the UK’s foremost events for librarians, educators, and information professionals. Study Centre Assistant, David Jacquest has secured a fully funded place at the three-day LILAC Conference, taking place in March 2026. The event, organised by CILIP’s Information Literacy Group, brings together librarians, educators and information professionals from across the UK and internationally. Ruth Szolkowska, Vice Principal of Innovation, Curriculum and Quality at Cheshire College, said: “ This is a brilliant achievement and a valuable opportunity for both David and the College. Engagement with national conferences like LILAC helps us stay at the forefront of innovation, ensuring our curriculum and learning resources continue to equip students with the critical digital and information skills they need for the future.” Speaking about the achievement, David said: “ I’m delighted to be able to attend the LILAC conference. I’m hoping that it will give me many ideas for how to promote good information literacy to all of our students. It should also help me in my efforts to become a chartered library professional, which I hope to complete this year.” David was selected as one of just five successful bursary recipients
nationwide. The bursary supports individuals from under-represented groups, including those working within Further Education, and aims to widen access to professional development opportunities across the sector. The Librarians’ Information Literacy Annual Conference explores current and emerging themes in information literacy, including digital skills, new technologies and innovative approaches to teaching and
learning. The 2026 programme will include sessions focusing on artificial intelligence and its growing role in education. Cheshire College – South & West continues to support staff development, supporting colleagues to engage with national professional networks that drive innovation, enhance teaching and learning, and strengthen student outcomes.

EXCITING NEW ADULT COURSES STARTING IN JANUARY 2026

Cheshire College – South & West is launching a wide range of courses this January, offering opportunities for career progression, retraining, and personal development across Cheshire. Designed with flexibility in mind, the new programmes support adults returning to education, whether they are looking to boost their employment prospects, change career, or learn a new skill in 2026 From career-focused skills to
creative hobbies, the College is prepared to help adults return to education and embrace new opportunities in 2026. “ The new year is always a great time for a fresh start,” said Ruth Szolkowska, Vice Principal Innovation, Curriculum and Quality at Cheshire College. “Whether you want to develop new career skills, explore a long-held interest, or simply try something different, these courses are designed
for just that.” Adults looking to develop new skills or move into a different career path can choose from focused programmes that offer clear progression routes. This includes the AAT Accounting Level 3 Diploma, the Level 2 Gateway to a Cabin Crew Career course, and the Level 3 Counselling Skills and Theory Award. Each programme provides practical, employer-recognised training designed to help adults step confidently into their next chapter. Speaking about her experience, former cabin crew student, Lindsay said: “The College is a great place to study with good facilities, and a friendly environment where help is always available. The standout moments for me were being in the cabin and experiencing the role just as it would be. If you are thinking of applying, then I’d say don’t hesitate” Since completing the course, Lindsay has been accepted into EasyJet’s talent pool, bringing her a significant step closer to securing a role in the sector. For hobbyists and those looking to pursue skills for everyday life, the College also offers courses in pottery, photography, cooking, DIY and woodwork, and digital skills Beyond flexible, part-time study routes, students also gain from small class sizes and specialist facilities across the College. This includes the state-of-the-art welding workshop in the new Institute of Technology building at Crewe, built to help students develop the high-level technical skills employers are seeking. Ruth added: “We know that adults have busy lives, so our courses are designed to be adaptable and supportive. Our tutors work with students to make learning practical, accessible, and enjoyable, whether they’re upskilling for work or exploring a personal interest.” Funding options are available, and adults may be eligible to study for free, depending on their circumstances. CHESHIRE COLLEGE DURING PARLIAMENT WEEK Cheshire College – South & West welcomed Member of Parliament for Crewe and Nantwich, Connor Naismith, to its Crewe campus on Friday, 28 November, as part of Parliament Week. During his visit, Naismith spoke with A Level Law and Politics students, offering insight into the workings of Parliament and sharing his experiences in public service. The visit provided students with a unique opportunity to

engage directly with a local Member of Parliament and gain a deeper understanding of the UK’s political system. Reflecting on the visit Jasbir Dhesi OBE, Principal and CEO of Cheshire College, said: “ Visits like this bring the curriculum to life, giving our students a real insight into how the subjects they study connect to the world beyond the classroom. It’s a fantastic
opportunity for them to engage directly with someone working in Parliament, ask questions, and start thinking about their own future and the range of possibilities ahead.” UK Parliament Week (UKPW) is an annual nationwide initiative that aims to increase public awareness of the work of Parliament and encourage engagement in democratic processes. The week-long event provides an opportunity for people across the country to learn about how Parliament functions, the role of MPs, and political processes across the UK. A Level student Poppy Timmis commented: “ It helped me learn about the action being taken in my local area, especially plans to improve educational opportunities. Hearing about economic growth strategies for Crewe and Nantwich was really useful, as local development is something I care about.” “Staying politically informed matters because politics impacts everyone’s life. It also let me apply the political knowledge from my lessons and research in a practical way, which was extremely beneficial.” Cheshire College offers a wide range of A Level subjects at its Crewe campus, designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed for success. Many students have gone on to study at some of the UK’s most prestigious universities, including the University of Cambridge, the University of Manchester, the University of Bristol, and University College London.
