CHESHIRE COLLEGE CELEBRATES
NATIONAL SUCCESS AS HIGHEST-RANKING ENGLISH COLLEGE AT WORLDSKILLS UK FINALS Cheshire College – South & West has been confirmed as the highest-ranking English college at the WorldSkills UK National Finals 2025, securing ten medal points and achieving joint fourth place overall. More than 400 students from across the UK competed in 47 skill areas following months of intense qualifying rounds. Creative Media student at Cheshire College, Lewis Francom, secured gold in 3D Digital Game Art. Reflecting on his success, Lewis said: “ It felt unreal both winning and proving the quality of our college by winning gold. The experience of the finals was both fun and the training was challenging. However, anyone wanting to try their hand at WorldSkills, all I can say is have a go as you'll never know what it will lead to.” Lewis’s lecturer, Iain McCluskey, added: “ I’m incredibly proud of all the finalists from our College for the dedication and commitment they’ve shown throughout the 2025 competition cycle. Lewis, in particular, demonstrated outstanding resilience, and he truly reflects the high standards we expect from Chester
Games Development students. This achievement is thoroughly deserved, and I couldn’t be prouder.” Hospitality students, Leah Wood and Rhianna Pool won Gold and Highly Commended in Restaurant Service. Their lecturer, John Holden, expressed his pride, saying: “ Leah and Rhianna worked every week, vigorously practising for the final; their passion, drive and motivation shone through over the two days. I am not only pleased with the result but immensely proud of their result and honoured to be their Tutor.” In addition, A Level student Jess Chesters received Highly Commended in Graphic Design, further contributing to the College’s strong overall performance. Principal and CEO Jasbir Dhesi OBE commented: “ Congratulations to all students who took part. Reaching the national finals is a huge achievement.” “Our students have shown exceptional focus, skill, and dedication throughout the competition, and being named the highest-ranking English college is an outstanding accomplishment. We couldn’t be prouder.”

FRESHERS’ FAIRS WELCOME
NEW STUDENTS ACROSS CHESHIRE COLLEGE CAMPUSES Cheshire College – South & West kicked off the academic year with a series of Freshers’ Fairs across its Crewe, Chester, and Ellesmere Port campuses, welcoming hundreds of new and returning students to explore opportunities, meet new people, and settle into college life. From wellbeing services and volunteering groups to career advice and student-led initiatives, the fairs were designed to help learners settle in and feel part of the College community. A wide range of organisations took part, including Nestlé, Donutology, Samaritans, Her Place, and other local businesses and charities, offering interactive activities, guidance, and products for sale. The College’s Student Senate also played an active role, engaging with new students as well as promoting student voice and involvement across campus life. Helen Nellist, Deputy Principal and Deputy CEO of Cheshire College, said: “ Freshers’ Fairs are an important part of the student experience. They give students the chance to connect with others, discover what’s available to them, and begin building relationships that will support them throughout their time at college.” “It was fantastic to see so many organisations and students engaging with one another across all three campuses.”

UNVEIL DEMENTIAFRIENDLY TRAINING FACILITY Cheshire College – South & West has officially opened the Alexandra Suite, a dementia-friendly training facility at its Crewe campus, in partnership with specialist care provider Belong Villages. Designed to mirror a real Belong household, the Alexandra Suite, named by current student Luca Baker, provides a highly realistic environment for Belong colleagues to develop practical skills, confidence, and person-centred approaches in care. The suite includes a replica lounge, bathroom and bedroom with both a divan and profile bed, plus a manual hoist and stand aid to support peoplehandling training. Additional equipment allows learning around communication, sensory engagement, and a range of care scenarios. The facility reflects the ongoing collaboration between Cheshire College and Belong, combining industry expertise with tailored training resources to raise standards across the sector. Helen Nellist, Deputy Principal and Deputy CEO at Cheshire College, commented: “By working in partnership with Belong, the Alexandra Suite provides a space where colleagues can refine their skills and students can gain hands-on experience, helping to develop a workforce that’s confident, capable, and ready for the realities of care.”
Brendan Conlon, Learning and Development Manager at Belong Villages, said: “ This facility represents much more than a training space, it’s a shared commitment to raise the standard of dementia care.” “This collaboration strengthens the bridge between education and employment, helping to grow a workforce that is not only well-trained, but deeply connected to the values of high-quality care. Together, we’re investing in people, in innovation, and in a future where those living with dementia receive the exceptional support they deserve.” The College continues to work closely with Belong, providing work experience opportunities, apprenticeships and T-Level placements for students. Tailored learning programmes, guest speaker sessions, curriculum enrichment activities and digital projects delivered in collaboration with Belong, further enhance the student learning experience and strengthen employability. The Alexandra Suite marks a major step in Cheshire College’s commitment to industry-led education and raising standards in dementia care training.

CHESHIRE COLLEGE AND STORYHOUSE PARTNER TO SHAPE REGIONAL CREATIVE FUTURES Cheshire College – South & West and Storyhouse, Chester’s independent and award-winning cultural hub and arts centre, have announced an exciting new partnership set to create opportunities for students and strengthen creative and cultural connections across the region. Building on their existing collaboration, Cheshire College and Storyhouse have formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding, marking a shared commitment to expanding educational, creative, and professional development opportunities for students, staff, and the wider community. The agreement provides a clear framework for strategic collaboration, underpinned by a mutual ambition to nurture talent and elevate cultural activity across Cheshire. CHESHIRE COLLEGE OPENS
STATE-OF-THE-ART INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY Cheshire College – South & West has officially opened its brand-new Institute of Technology (IoT) building at the Crewe Campus, marking a major milestone in technical education for the region. The long-awaited facility is part of the Cheshire and Warrington Institute of Technology, a collaboration between leading education providers and employers. The initiative is designed to deliver cutting-edge technical training in highdemand sectors such as engineering, computing, construction, and healthcare science, helping to close the skills gap and prepare students for the careers of the future. The new two-storey building is the result of £14.2 million investment into the region’s education infrastructure. It features industry-standard equipment and learning environments that reflect real-world workplaces, giving students the tools and experience they need to succeed. Jasbir Dhesi OBE, Principal and CEO of Cheshire College – South & West, said: “We’re incredibly proud to officially open the new Institute of Technology building. This facility represents a huge step forward in our mission to deliver world-class technical education and provide students with the skills employers are actively looking for.” Cheshire College is the lead provider for the Cheshire and Warrington IoT, working in partnership with Macclesfield College, Reaseheath College, Warrington & Vale Royal

CHESHIRE COLLEGE STUDENTS Cheshire College – South & West students are celebrating outstanding A Level, BTEC and T Level results today, with students securing places at leading universities, progressing onto apprenticeships and taking the next step towards successful careers. The College is celebrating another

JUNE 2026
successful year of A Level results, with 2026 marking the third consecutive year of an increased high-grade profile across its A Level subjects. An impressive 15 A Level subjects achieved a 100% pass rate, demonstrating the outstanding achievements of students across diverse subjects and reflecting
the dedication and hard work of both students and staff. Among the highest-performing A Level subjects were Law, Mathematics, English Language and Psychology with students achieving high grades and securing exciting next steps into higher education, apprenticeships,
employment and further study. The College is also celebrating continued excellent performance across its creative A Levels, with students achieving high grades across a range of arts-based subjects. BTEC students are celebrating today, with an impressive 99% successfully achieving their qualification. Particularly strong performances in Engineering and Protective Services demonstrate the breadth and quality of education and training available at Cheshire College. T Level students also celebrated strong results, with an overall pass rate of 94.2% and five courses achieving a 100% pass rate. T Levels combine classroom learning with a substantial
45-day industry-placement, enabling students to apply their technical knowledge in the workplace. This year's results reflect the hard work, resilience and commitment shown by students across academic, technical and vocational programmes, with strong performances across a wide range of course areas. Students will now progress to universities across the UK, higher and degree apprenticeships, and skilled employment. Many will continue their learning and develop careers in areas such as healthcare, engineering, digital, education, business and the creative industries. Principal and CEO Jasbir Dhesi OBE said: “ Today is about celebrating our students and everything they have achieved. We have seen our students grow in confidence, develop new skills and overcome challenges to reach this important milestone.” “Whether they are progressing to university, higher apprenticeships, employment or further study, they leave us ready to make a positive contribution to their communities and chosen industries. We look forward to seeing what they achieve next.” Across the College's campuses, students are sharing their achievements with friends, family and staff as they look ahead to the next stage of their education or career.
Among those celebrating was Rachel McGarry who achieved A*, A*, A*, in A Level Maths, Biology and Chemistry, and will go on to study Veterinary Medicine at the University of Cambridge. She said: “ It hasn’t really sunk in yet. I’m heading off to the University of Cambridge to study Veterinary Medicine for the next 6 years. I’ve loved every minute of College. The teachers are so supportive, and I will remember them for the rest of my life.” Another student, Felix Gorman, achieved D* D* D* in Creative Media Practice and is progressing to Staffordshire University to study Games Art. They said: “ I’m really happy with my results, I got the highest grade that I could achieve which I’m really proud of. The College is so welcoming and there are a lot of very talented teachers here.” Also celebrating their success today is Amy, who studied A Levels in English Language, Psychology and Media Studies, and is going on to do an Early Years apprenticeship in a nursery. She said: “ It’s been incredible and I have made friends for life. I didn’t think I would pass, and I have, so I’m over the moon.”

EMPLOYER PARTNERS WITH HAMPERS FOR APPRENTICESHIP WEEK Cheshire College – South & West has been celebrating National Apprenticeship Week by showing appreciation to its employer partners, delivering staffroom hampers as a thank you for their ongoing support in developing the next generation of skilled professionals. The College’s employer engagement team visited local businesses and partner organisations across Cheshire, presenting hampers as a gesture of gratitude for their commitment to hosting apprentices, supporting work placements, and contributing to high-quality work-based learning opportunities. Staff room hampers were thoughtfully curated to include a range of treats, from tea and coffee to handmade biscuits freshly prepared by

the Academy Restaurant. The celebrations included a visit to Belong Villages in Chester, where the Lord Mayor of Chester joined the College and Belong teams to highlight the strength of their partnership and the opportunities apprenticeships provide for students and local employers alike. THE CLASS OF 2025 AT HIGHER EDUCATION GRADUATION
Cheshire College – South & West proudly celebrated the achievements of its Higher Education students with a formal graduation ceremony at Chester Cathedral on Wednesday, 22nd October. The ceremony brought together graduates of university-level courses from the College’s Crewe, Ellesmere Port, and Chester campuses, alongside

peers and college staff for a memorable day of celebration. Graduates were awarded qualifications across a diverse range of disciplines, including Engineering, Computing, Performing Arts, Business, and Education. Hannah Crockett, HND Engineering graduate, said: “I’m currently in full-time
employment and wanted to do Higher Education part-time. I really liked the flexibility and the fact that everyone is so friendly — there are so many opportunities here. I’m going to continue my education and go to university to do the top-up year so I can gain a full degree.”

SKILLED TRADES AT CHESHIRE COLLEGE AWARDS Outstanding students from Cheshire College – South & West were recognised for their exceptional skills and dedication at the annual Freemen and Guilds Awards, held at the College’s Ellesmere Port Campus. The ceremony celebrated the achievements of students across a diverse range of disciplines and marked another milestone in the 57-year partnership between Cheshire College and the Freemen and Guilds of the City of Chester. Surrounded by proud family members, College staff, and representatives from the Freemen and Guilds, this year’s award recipients were recognised across a wide range of disciplines, from construction and motor vehicle technology to hospitality and creative arts. The Freemen and Guilds of the City of Chester, formed in the 12th century, represent 23 traditional trade Guilds including the Joiners, Carvers and Turners, Bricklayers, Clothworkers, Walkers and Masons, and Barber Surgeons. The Guilds were established to represent local tradesmen, maintain the quality of their goods, and support the recruitment and training of apprentices. Today, the Freemen and Guilds Awards aim to celebrate young talent in trades, ensuring the preservation and future success of these essential crafts. Helen Nellist, Deputy Principal and Deputy CEO of Cheshire College, expressed her pride in the students: “These awards remind us of the incredible talent emerging
from our classrooms, workshops and kitchens every day. In a world that is increasingly shaped by innovation and craftsmanship, our students are gaining the skills and confidence to shape the future.” “We’re proud to continue our partnership with the Freemen and Guilds and celebrate the contribution of our students to local industry and beyond.” Award categories included the Ancient and Worshipful Company of Bricklayers Award, the Saddlers and Curriers Award, the Painters, Glaziers, Embroiderers and Stationers Award,
and the Weavers Award — all reflecting the breadth of traditional crafts represented by the Guilds. Among this year’s winners was Mupindishe Kajese, who is currently studying Applied Science BTEC National Extended Diploma - Level 3, and received the Mercers, Ironmongers, Grocers and Apothecaries - Pharmacy Award. Reflecting on the achievement, they said: “I feel very happy to have won an award, at first I didn't believe it but then my lecturers said I had won and that I deserved it so I'm really happy, I've got no words to explain it.”

AT ITS BIGGEST-EVER APPRENTICESHIP & SKILLS AWARDS Cheshire College – South & West proudly celebrated the achievements of exceptional apprentices and employer partners at its 2026 Apprenticeship & Skills Awards, marking a major milestone during National Apprenticeship Week. Held at the College’s Ellesmere Port Campus, the event brought together employers, apprentices, partners and stakeholders from across the region to recognise excellence across a wide range of industries. Formerly known as the Apprenticeship Awards, the event has evolved this year to include a wider focus on skills, reflecting the College’s commitment to celebrating progression, technical excellence and skills development alongside apprenticeship success. Twenty-nine awards were presented on the night, recognising exceptional apprentices and innovative employers across sectors including engineering, construction, health, education, business. Winners were selected for their outstanding progress, contribution in the workplace, and commitment to personal and professional development. Helen Nellist, Deputy Principal and Deputy CEO of Cheshire College, expressed pride in the achievements of this year’s winners. She commented: “This year’s Apprenticeship & Skills Awards represent a milestone for the College and for the region. They

celebrate not only individual success, but the vital role that skills, training and strong employer partnerships play in building a confident, future-ready workforce.” “We are incredibly proud of our apprentices and grateful to the employers who continue to support and invest in their development.” New for 2026, the College introduced awards recognising green skills and sustainability, highlighting

the vital role apprentices and employers play in supporting a greener future. One keynote speaker, Joe Hook, Project Integration Team Lead for Uniper, spoke about his experiences and highlighted the importance of green skills training in meeting the evolving demands of industry and driving the UK’s green economy forward. Guests were welcomed with a drinks reception and canapes before enjoying a two-course meal prepared
by students from the College’s awardwinning Academy Restaurant. Performance Coach, Business Mentor and Keynote Speaker Claire Brumby, who inspired attendees with her insights on professional development and skills in the workplace, said: “What a truly inspiring evening. Apprenticeships offer an invaluable pathway for young people, and this ceremony not only celebrates individual achievement but also acknowledges the many others who play a vital role behind the scenes.” Reflecting on the evening, award winner, Isabella Yates, commented: “It feels like a real honour to be an award winner. The support from both my employer and my assessor has been amazing. I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship, this is the way forward as you are gaining hands on experience alongside a qualification and a foot in the door to employment.” The 2026 Apprenticeship & Skills Awards reaffirm Cheshire College’s commitment to delivering high-quality training and strengthening partnerships that equip students with the skills needed to succeed in modern industry.

CHESHIRE COLLEGE CELEBRATES
THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF OUTSTANDING STUDENTS Students from Cheshire College – South & West’s Ellesmere Port and Chester campuses were recognised for their outstanding achievements at the College’s annual Student Awards, held at the Ellesmere Port Campus. The awards evening brought together students, staff, families, and partner organisations in celebration of exceptional academic, vocational, and personal accomplishments. Awards were presented across a broad range of subjects, including Engineering, Business, Health and
Social Care, Construction, Sport, Science, Arts, Maths and more. Categories recognised achievement in academic and vocational studies, as well as contributions to College life and personal development. Jasbir Dhesi OBE, Principal and CEO of Cheshire College, said: “ The Student Awards are always one of the highlights of our year. They provide an opportunity to celebrate the hard work, determination and achievements of our students, both inside and outside
the classroom.” “Each award winner has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to their studies and personal development, and we are incredibly proud of everything they have accomplished. We look forward to seeing what they achieve next as they continue their education and careers.” Higher Education Student of the Year winner Connah Proudman, commented: “ I’m very proud of myself and grateful that my tutors put me forward for the award because I have worked really hard. Coming back to College as an adult has been life-changing. It’s been hard, but it has been amazing.” Travel and Tourism Student of the Year winner Christopher Williamson, also commented: “ I never in a million years thought I would have won an award,

so to be standing here, it’s amazing. Since the first day I joined the College, it has been amazing. I’ve never had a bad experience, and you always get the support you need.” The celebrations continued at the College’s Crewe Campus, where awards were presented across a wide range of subject areas, including Engineering, Performing Arts, Health and Social Care, Sport, Business, Construction, and more. Each award highlighted more than academic success, celebrating resilience, growth, creativity and contribution to the College community. Hair, Beauty and Barbering Student of the Year winner, Asier Robles, said: “ It’s been really good, and it’s a feeling I‘ve never felt before. It is

my first time winning something like this, and i am really grateful to the College.” English student of the year, Rohaini Abujarad, commented: “ I am so happy and excited. I had no idea that I was up for winning, but I think I have gone through a lot, so I deserve it. The College is wonderful, and it has given me so many opportunities to show what I can do.” The awards form part of Cheshire College’s annual programme of celebrations, recognising student achievement across its campuses and highlighting the success of students preparing for careers, apprenticeships, higher education and industry.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
A FUTURE I NEVER IMAGINED
HOLLY’S JOURNEY FROM CHESHIRE COLLEGE TO OXFORD UNIVERSITY After studying A Levels at Cheshire College – South & West, Holly Simpson is studying at one of the world’s most prestigious universities — inspiring others to follow in her footsteps. Building a Community at Oxford Within Oxford University, I go to Pembroke College, which acts as its own community, like a miniature university. I’m very lucky to have all my best friends within my College as they really help it to feel like home. The collegiate system at Oxford is probably one of my favourite elements of my learning there, as I’ve gotten to know my tutors on a one-on-one basis. I find that they are always happy to make time to chat and go over anything which I find difficult which is unique. I am very grateful to have the opportunity to build relationships with such intelligent scholars. How Cheshire College Prepared Me for University The College’s Future’s Programme got me to where I am today. It’s strange for me to think that if I hadn’t one day had a chance meeting with the University Admissions Coordinator in the library that I never would even have applied to university, never mind to Oxford.

Aside from this, though, I do believe that it really is down to the student to seize the opportunities and programmes offered at College and to make the best of them. It's about being given the space to take initiative before you arrive at university, because that it what it takes to excel there once you get in! My Course at Cheshire College I am a bit of an anomaly in that I got into Oxford with 2 A Levels, a BTEC and an EPQ. I did A levels in English Literature and French, a Level 3 Qualification in Music, and I wrote my EPQ on English and French literature. The facilities at College were great and the staff were always so helpful, ordering in French books for me to read for leisure when I couldn’t find any in the library.
Oxford, that I hadn’t let myself down, it was so joyous to go into College and chat to all my teachers who had helped me along the way. The conversations I had with staff throughout my time made me feel so grateful to have ended up at Cheshire College. Advice for Future Students Do what you love. If you, like me, look at the subjects you love and wonder ‘well, where will that even take me?’, do them anyway. You’re bound to do better in the discipline if you love it, and even if it won’t lead you to a job, it will lead you to something else you love. Talk to people, get the most you can out of your teachers, and take every opportunity which interests you because you never know where you may end up.
Highlights and Opportunities I chose Cheshire College because at the time I wanted to pursue music. The music department was so much better than my high school’s sixth form, and I would definitely say that the time I spent performing with my band was one of my top highlights. I was also asked to sing at the Higher Education Graduation Ceremony in my first year at the College, which was great fun. I think my biggest opportunity was the Scholars’ Programme – I felt so excited at the prospect of going to Oxford, I knew I wouldn’t be able to let it go. Enjoying Independence I’d met new friends, had new teachers and classes, and I just loved being in charge of how I structured my day so much. I think really leaning into being independent at College made the transition into university a lot easier. Results Day I think Results Day was my favourite. Feeling so relieved that I’d got my grades and subsequently got my place at CHESHIRE COLLEGE CHRONICLE

SAM’S JOURNEY FROM CHESHIRE COLLEGE TO A PROJECT MANAGEMENT APPRENTICESHIP After completing A Levels in Politics, Economics, and Business at Cheshire College earlier this year, Sam Linde has begun a Project Management Degree Apprenticeship at civil engineering company Ringway Jacobs, taking the next step in his career with confidence. A Standout Moment – Student Awards One of the highlights for me was receiving awards for my achievements. It felt special to have my efforts recognised. When I started college, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my career. But through exploring subjects and opportunities, I discovered my passion and became motivated toward my goals. It was amazing that others noticed that drive developing in me. Support That Makes a Difference The opportunities at Cheshire College are unmatched. Tutor sessions, the Futures Scheme, talks with professionals, and the relationships you build with teachers were key in shaping my mindset. My teachers like Lauren and Ben were especially supportive — they helped me unlock my potential and cheered me on the whole way. From College to Career I’m now doing a Project Management Apprenticeship at Ringway Jacobs. I wanted a career that blended learning with practical work, and this role fits perfectly. Being able to apply what I’ve learned directly in my job makes it both challenging and rewarding. Advice for Students I would say throw yourself into it. Explore every opportunity, talk to your teachers, join programs, and find what motivates you.

MACAULAY COOPER RETURNS
TO INSPIRE THE NEXT GENERATION

Cheshire College – South & West was thrilled to welcome back former Performing Arts student Macaulay Cooper, whose successful acting career has taken him from the College’s Ellesmere Port theatre studios to the sets of Emmerdale, Casualty, Hollyoaks, Coronation Street, and even
the recent Fantastic Four film. Returning to the College’s Performing Arts department, Macaulay spoke with current students about his journey from studying Acting and progressing onto a Higher National Diploma, to building a career in theatre, television, and film. Reflecting on his time at Cheshire College, Macaulay said: “ I didn’t realise at the time just how impactful the things I was learning would be.” “Now, after a 15-year career, I can see that everything I learnt in college is just the norm in the industry. It’s been a great experience coming here when I was younger – and coming back now, being able to meet the students and talk about my career. I wish them all the best in the future.”
The visit is part of the College’s ongoing commitment to celebrating alumni success and connecting current students with professionals who once stood where they are now. Helen Nellist, Deputy Principal and Deputy CEO at Cheshire College, added: “ It’s always incredibly special when our alumni return to share their journeys. Macaulay’s visit is a brilliant example of how staying connected with our former students can inspire the next generation. We’re proud of everything he’s achieved and grateful for the time he’s taken to give back.” Cheshire College continues to grow its alumni network, offering former students the opportunity to stay involved, share their experiences, and support learners following in their footsteps.
