HONOURED AT FREEMEN AND GUILDS AWARDS Fifteen extraordinary Cheshire College – South & West students were recognised for their achievements last night at the prestigious Freemen and Guilds Awards 2023. The ceremony, hosted within the theatre at the College’s Ellesmere Port Campus, is an annual tradition and an occasion of great importance for both Cheshire College and the Freemen and Guilds. The Freemen and Guilds of The City of Chester dates back as far as 1190, and they were originally established to represent local tradesmen, protect the quality of their goods and train apprentices. In the ensuing 800 years, the Freemen have also been involved in many civic events. Today, the Freemen and Guilds Awards are presented to Cheshire College students who have achieved trade qualifications and apprenticeships aligned with the trade crafts of the various Guild companies, ensuring their trade’s survival for future generations. The College’s students receive industry standard training on Campus and have access to world-class training facilities including Crewe Campus’ Hospital Ward and Anatomage Tables, Ellesmere Port Campus’ bespoke Motor
Vehicle, Construction and Engineering Workshop and robotics, and Chester Campus’ Media Booths, TV Studios, Gaming Suites, Digital Hub and 3D printers. Reflecting on the award ceremony, President of the Freemen and Guilds of the City of Chester, and member of the Baker’s Guild, Sara Smith, shared:
It is such a privilege to be involved with Cheshire College for this special evening, meeting the students and presenting the Awards. All students should be very proud of themselves, and we are delighted to celebrate their success. The association between the Guilds and the College goes back 55 years. The President at the time, Mr Bill Dutton, proposed an annual ceremony to encourage and promote students who have excelled in their crafts represented by the various Guilds. We are very proud of our association with the College and hope it continues for another 55 years!

The evening began with a drinks and canapé reception, provided by the College’s Hospitality and Catering students, and the ceremony’s accolades included the Ancient and Worshipful Company of Bricklayers Award, the Painters, Glaziers, Embroiderers and Stationers Award, and the Early Years
Award, amongst others. Level 3 Professional Cookery & Patisserie student Phoebe (pictured below) was one of many winners at the ceremony, taking home the Innholders, Cooks and Victuallers Company Award. When asked about her nomination and success she commented:
I felt honoured when I found out I was nominated for the award. I’m always willing to help out with Front of House at College events, and it’s so rewarding that my hard work has been recognised.

As Britain’s economy is calling out for more and more technically skilled professionals, our relationship with the Freemen and Guilds of Chester remains of vital importance. All the award winners deserve huge congratulations for their success, and we are confident their skills and hard work will go on to help local communities, the economy, and their chosen industries.

WINS CHRISTMAS CARD COMPETITION Cheshire College – South & West’s 2023 Christmas card has been designed by A Level student, Jasmine Lau (pictured above), whose artwork celebrated friendship and inclusivity this festive season. The College provides all students with the opportunity to submit designs for their annual Christmas card where the winning entry would be voted for and chosen by its staff and students. With multiple designs to choose from, Jasmine’s design became the frontrunner as it was praised for its use of colour and the meaningful message it represents. 17 year-old Jasmine, who is studying
A Level Graphic Design, Photography and Psychology at Cheshire College, said: “I was happy and excited when I heard I had won the competition.” When asked about the inspiration behind her design, Jasmine said:

Jasmine plans to explore a career in graphic design when she completes her studies. Assistant Director of Visual and Performing Arts, Phil Farrington, added:

WORLDSKILLS VICTORY ON THE MENU FOR
CHESHIRE COLLEGE PROFESSIONAL COOKERY STUDENT Cheshire College – South & West is delighted by the success of Level 1 Professional Cookery student, Esther James, who won a silver medal at the WorldSkills Foundation Skills competition for Restaurant Service. The national competition was a true
test of skill and talent, as students had to use their professionalism and creativity to set a restaurant-standard table for four people with a Christmas theme. Esther’s victory makes her one of the most accomplished students in her field in the UK.
When asked how she felt about the competition, Esther responded:
I was really nervous before the competition but so proud when I won the silver medal. It feels amazing knowing I achieved this all by myself. Your lecturers can help you to prepare but during the competition you’re out there all alone, so it felt great to be one of the winners.
Lecturer in Hospitality and Catering, John Holden said of Esther’s success:
Esther has been practising hard for this Final and all the credit goes to her for her tenacity, drive and motivation. We are immensely proud of Esther and her achievement, and we look forward to hopefully more success in the future.
The College’s Hospitality and Catering courses enable learners to gain experience and industry skills in the Academy and Academy West Restaurants, at Crewe and Ellesmere Port Campuses. Students are given the opportunity to provide catering and gain experience at corporate events and Gourmet Evenings. Most recently, Crewe’s Academy Restaurant was awarded the 2023 ‘UK Young Restaurant Team of the Year 2023′ title.

GRADUATION CEREMONY LIGHTS UP CHESTER CATHEDRAL Cheshire College – South & West’s Higher Education students had an historic rite of passage today, as they attended their much-anticipated graduation ceremony. Friends, family and lecturers gathered in Chester Cathedral to celebrate the next generation of talent in fields ranging from Engineering to Creative Media Practice, Performing Arts and Sport & Exercise Science. Stuart Pollitt, BBC presenter and a multi award-winning documentary filmmaker, undertook the role of Compère for the ceremony, and graduates were presented with an inspiring talk from 2023 Cheshire Woman of the Year, Ije McDougall. Among the graduates was 51-yearold Nicola Ayton, who studied Level 5 Coaching at the College. Nicola said:
It’s so rewarding to be graduating and I feel very proud; hopefully it’s also an inspirational experience for my youngest son who’s joining me today. I will use coaching and the associated learning in both my professional career is a Business Development Manager in the field of Digital Health, and in my personal life too.

Also, in attendance was 22-year-old Alexander Baldwin (pictured right), a Level 5 HND General Engineering graduate. Reflecting on his time at Cheshire College, Alexander said:
I actually started studying at Cheshire College six years ago and I’ve worked my way up to doing my HND Engineering qualification. The College has definitely given me great support with both the staff and resources, which allowed me to achieve the best grades possible; and I hope to provide the same support to my students as a lecturer at the College in the future.
Many of the day’s graduates have exciting plans for their futures, including further study, starting their own businesses, and starting a new career tailored to their area of study. Principal and CEO of Cheshire College, Jasbir Dhesi OBE, said that the students should be extremely proud of their achievements:

CHESHIRE COLLEGE STUDENT WINS
SILVER AT WORLDSKILLS NATIONALS Cheshire College – South & West is celebrating a major victory after HNC Games Development student Emiley Scott won a silver medal for 3D Digital Game Art at the WorldSkills National Finals. Emiley, who started studying at Cheshire College as a Level 3 student before progressing on to Higher Education at Chester Campus, said of their educational journey: “Considering I had zero experience beforehand; it’s gone really well. It’s taught me skills I didn’t know I had.” For the competition, Emiley had to do 3D Mario Kart models inspired by their own theme. Reflecting on their time at the WorldSkills National Finals, she commented:
It was stressful, but it was fun too. I got to meet a lot of likeminded people and make connections with companies like Cloud Imperium Games in Manchester. I want to make sure I have a future career in 3D Game Art, so this opportunity has been incredible for my CV.

Despite their hard work and established talent, Emily said that it was still a surprise to walk away from the competition as one of the top three competitors in the UK: “I didn’t expect to get a medal, so the fact I got silver is pretty cool.” Lecturer in Games Development Ian McCluskey said that there had never been any doubt that Emiley would perform extremely well at the WorldSkills National Finals:
Emiley is an incredibly talented student and the fact that she’s been independently recognised by the WorldSkills judges is proof of that. Everyone in the department and the wider College is so proud of them, and I hope she uses this victory to help them achieve their ambitions of working in the industry in the future.
