COLLABORATE IN THE SPIRIT OF REMEMBRANCE DAY
Cheshire College – South & West students from across the College’s Campuses and departments have come together to work on a collaborative project in honour of Remembrance Day. Students from multiple departments including Uniformed Protective Services, Sport, Travel and Tourism and Media created a Remembrance Day video, which was shared throughout the College in memory of the service sacrifice of all those that fought to protect our freedoms. The video, which was captured by the College’s Media students, featured Uniformed Protective Services students from Crewe and Ellesmere Port Campuses marching in procession and ended with them laying a ceremonial wreath of poppies in the College grounds. The College also remembered the fallen with a performance piece, produced by BTEC Level 3 Dance students at Crewe Campus. The moving tribute was shown at half-hourly intervals for students and staff on Thursday 9th November in the College’s theatre. Jasbir Dhesi OBE, Principal and CEO of Cheshire College said of the tributes:

It will always be a sombre day as we remember the incredible sacrifices of individuals past and present who fought to keep us safe; however, our students have embraced the spirit of the day, using it as an opportunity for teamwork, collaboration, mutual respect and support.

ALADDIN FLASHMOB AT CHESHIRE COLLEGE Students and staff at Cheshire College – South & West’s Ellesmere Port Campus received a surprise when a normal lunchtime routine was transformed thanks to an Aladdin-themed flashmob. The Broadway musical, based on Disney’s 1992 animated feature film, will be this year’s Christmas play at the College’s Ellesmere Port Campus. Performing Arts and Technical Theatre students took this lunchtime opportunity to practice their vocals, choreography and sound design for the unsuspecting crowd. Students sang several songs from the award-winning soundtrack including Arabian Nights, Prince Ali and A Whole New World. The latter was performed

from a first-floor balcony by Level 3 Performing Arts Practice (Acting) students Oliver and Afiya, who will be playing the roles of Aladdin and Princess Jasmine, respectively. When asked about the challenges around putting the event together, Level 3 Production Arts Practice student, George, commented: “The whole build up to it was quite suspenseful, trying to figure our speaker placements without feedback and working to a tight turnaround, but the overall project has been really enjoyable to work on and I’m glad it’s gone successfully.”
Fellow Production Arts Practice student Sophie Hayes also reflected on the success of the event:
From a technical standpoint, it was very efficient. Nothing went wrong. It was certainly challenging in terms of where the location was, but I think we all quite welcome a challenge!

CHESHIRE AND WARRINGTON PLEDGE CAREERS FAIR
Cheshire College – South and West hosted the Cheshire and Warrington Pledge Partnership Town Wide Careers and Education Fairs at all three Campuses between October and November, with over 180 exhibitors attending in total. Students from local secondary schools in Crewe, Ellesmere Port and Chester were invited to attend the events, along with Cheshire College’s own cohort of students and members of the general public from 4pm-6pm.
At all three events, over 5,000 students from 28 secondary schools (including over 1,800 Cheshire College students) sought advice, information and inspiration on their next step into careers and jobs from the many exhibitors that were at the event including Bakkavor, Bentley Motors, British Army, Cheshire Hospitals Trust, NHS, AstraZeneca, Stellantis and Bank of America. There were also multiple higher education, further education and
independent training providers present. Trevor Langston, Pledge Lead said, “Our collaboration with Cheshire College is key and our role to help young people to understand the opportunities available to them locally, the skills employers are looking for and the relevant pathways help every young person to take their best next step.”

Director of Marketing and School Partnerships, Jordan Swift, said that the events had been a great success, and a vital resource for students:
In an increasingly dynamic employment market, it is vital that our students gain access to local and national employers and education providers, allowing them to explore the breadth of opportunities available to them. We are so thankful to the employers and providers who supported the event. It is encouraging to see so many employers, charities and educational institutions sharing a common vision to empower the next generation. We have received overwhelmingly positive feedback and we have no doubt that that these Careers Fairs will be mutually beneficial for students and employers alike.

INNOVATION IN HEALTHCARE AND LIFE SCIENCES AT CHESHIRE COLLEGE With thanks to the Strategic Development Fund (SDF), Cheshire College was able to reshape the teaching and training provision, and update the facilities within the Health and Life Sciences are of the College. INTERVIEW WITH CHAIR OF THE CHESHIRE COLLEGE CORPORATION
LESLEY DAVIES CBE Hello Lesley, it is good to meet you in your capacity as Chair of Governors. Firstly, can you explain what the role of a College Governor is for those that may not know? The key role of College Governors is to support and to challenge the leaders of the College to ensure that the interests of our staff and students is at the forefront of our strategies and actions. Governors also play a vital role in setting the strategic direction of the College and governors also have a link responsibility, which entails getting to know the staff and students in a particular curriculum area to really get to know what students experience at the College. We are very fortunate at this College; our Governors bring a wealth of experience and work in a range of industries including finance, retail, local and regional businesses, and higher education. It is a demanding role as, although its voluntary, many Governors have existing full time jobs or other personal commitments.
My last full-time role was as CEO and Principal of The Trafford College Group. Since leaving I have supported several colleges, and prior to Cheshire I chaired a college that needed some additional support. When I left there were good governance arrangements in place to support the college and a strong leadership team ensuring students had a good experience whilst in education. I have kept a close eye on Cheshire College as it is my local college. It was my good fortune that the College’s Chair of Governors, Dame Pat Bacon, was retiring this year and the opportunity for a new Chair became available. I was very fortunate that the timing worked out. The role is incredibly important to me. As I said, Cheshire College is my local College and I have a vested interest in the community, and it is a privilege to work in the further education sector and a pleasure to work with staff and students. I have had a great start meeting so many dedicated staff and students at the College.
What are the biggest challenges you believe you’ll face over the next year? Cheshire College South & West is a good College but like most, we will be, no doubt, be faced with challenges in areas such as funding, curriculum change and continuing to prompt apprenticeships to local employers. There will also be a general election within the next year and who knows what changes to our education system that may bring. The future is always uncertain- but I know that the College’s staff and Governors will always ensure that the College is supportive of the local communities it serves and where people can continue to develop the core skills needed to improve their employment opportunities. Students of all ages will be provided with information and guidance to navigate the educational landscape. Can you tell us a bit more about your career to date and why you chose to join Cheshire College? I have worked in the Further Education (FE) sector for most of my career. In all my various roles I have always passionately believed in the power of further education and what it can achieve for students regardless of age, background and experience. The work of our staff changes lives and improves life chances and I am always impressed by their work and dedication. CHESHIRE COLLEGE CHRONICLE

In 2016, you were the Founding Chair of the UK Skills Partnership Board, a network of the UK’s leading education sector organisations. Can you tell us a bit more about the network, who it benefits and how? The Board was put together by the Department of International Trade and the members consisted of Chief Executives and Senior Directors of education and skills associations representing the whole skills sector. Members included the Association of Colleges (AoC), Universities UK, WorldSkills, Federation of Awarding Bodies, Joint Council for Qualifications, British Council and the Department for International Trade. The main purpose of the group was to work together to support the implementation of the UK’s International Education Strategy (IES) and to showcase our education system and grow our international business. In my role as Chair, it was a privilege to represent the group on the DTI’s Education Sector Advisory Board. It was a very rewarding role and it was great to see how young people benefitted from international study which helped widen their perspective, better understand and experience other cultures and also helped build independence and resilience.

At Ellesmere Port the hair and beauty room has been redeveloped and the College currently has government support for an Institute of Technology which will provide qualifications for those wishing to study at higher technical levels. The College has also put together a strong programme of courses and a team of supportive staff who are confident in how they can continue to help students move forward into a sustainable future.
Why is education, and having a role within this sector, important to you? I am a passionate supporter of FE and have always been in every role I have taken throughout my career in education. I have seen young people come through the system at 16 who have challenging circumstances, have not been able to thrive, not because they are not motivated but because they have needed the right support. No matter what educational or training path a student wants to go down, an FE College provides a new type of learning for students to explore in a supportive environment. I have seen, first hand, how FE changes lives and it is wonderful to see so many people go on and achieve success and excel in adult life. Colleges make a difference to our students’ life chances and when I look at Cheshire College specifically, our vocational training is fantastic and equips each student to succeed and achieve what they set out to accomplish.
In terms of life outside of your role, what do you like to do in your spare time? I have to say my passion is learning and I am a constant student myself. My enjoyment is all about what more can I learn. Whether it be short courses or a single lecture, I am curious about the world and keen to explore new topics and keep myself updated with the latest thinking on a range of subjects. The most recent programme I attended was a 12-week course on the Persian empire, all online with a live lecturer and some home reading. I’m not sure what I will sign up for next! I am also kept busy with my voluntary work which includes working with the Royal British Legion.
As you’ve worked in education and training for the majority of your career so far, we’re curious - what would you say are the standout qualities of Cheshire College? The College is close to employers and understands not only what employers are looking for when they recruit but also what the UK’s economy needs to be highly productive. The College works hard to ensure that the education and training it offers provides young people and adults with the knowledge, skills and experiences they will need to go on to have successful careers. The College has also secured significant investment to update its estate and teaching and learning resources. For example, at Crewe campus the College has just

In 2023, you were made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in the New Year’s Honours List. What was that experience like? Yes – what a wonderful surprise! I received an email from the Cabinet Office which said, ‘You must read this letter and answer by Friday.’ I had to read it about three times before it sunk in, and sometimes even now I still can’t believe it. I had been honoured before (with an OBE) so I never in a million years expected anything like that to happen again.
Looking ahead to this academic year, how would you say our staff, students and Governors can best support each other this year? There is an open culture I love about Cheshire College, and it aligns with my personal mantra that you can always improve and do things better. We are a brilliant College and have fantastic students, but it is important we do not rest on our laurels. We need to look ahead and see what we can do to make things even better for our staff and students and ensure we continuously improve. Thanks for your time, Lesley. COMPETES FOR DELIFRESH YOUNG CHEF OF THE YEAR TITLE A Professional Cookery student at Cheshire College – South & West has successfully qualified for the regional finals of the Delifresh Young Chef of the Year competition. Nathan Price, who studies at the College’s Ellesmere Port Campus, was chosen to compete at the regional finals in Liverpool, out of over 100 entrants. The Delifresh Young Chef of the Year is a national competition which was born to give excitement back to the Hospitality and Catering industry. Each year, the competition showcases outstanding young talent, giving them a springboard to catapult their career and profile.
Nathan’s winning dish, which secured him a place at the regionals, consisted of pan-fried calamari, squid ink gnocchi, cockles and pickled cucumber. Upon hearing that he had qualified for the regional finals, Nathan said that he had been speechless at first:
It’s such a privilege to be able to compete. It’s a big step and I’m sure it will be challenging but it will be entertaining too and I’m definitely going to enjoy the experience.
Nathan will be tasked with creating a main course and dessert at the upcoming regionals, the details of which are being kept secret for the time being. When asked how the College had supported him throughout his course, Nathan said:
Chef Angel has given me lots of ideas and support. When I was thinking of dishes for the regional qualifiers, I’d decided to cook gnocchi but I’d never actually cooked it before, so Angel taught me how and made sure I got plenty of practice.
Nathan has also benefitted from training in Ellesmere Port Campus’s award-winning Academy West restaurant and state-of-theart kitchens, which have allowed him to hone his skills in real-world conditions and equip him for life in the Hospitality industry. Andrea Huby, who is the Assistant Director for Hair, Beauty and Hospitality at the College’s Ellesmere Port Campus, said that Nathan’s achievement was significant:
This is a professional competition, not a student competition, so Nathan’s success is really commendable. For a Level 3 student to be competing alongside working professionals is just extraordinary. RECORD-BREAKING OPEN EVENING Cheshire College – South & West’s first Open Evening of the new academic year saw a record number of attendees across all three Campuses. Doors were open to the public at the College’s Crewe, Ellesmere Port and Chester Campuses, giving hundreds of prospective students across the region the opportunity to talk to lecturers, student ambassadors and support staff about life at Cheshire College. College staff pulled out all the stops for their guests, with live music, food, hair and make-up demonstrations. Following an investment of millions across all Campuses, visitors also enjoyed displays of the cutting-edge equipment available on-site including Crewe Campus’ Hospital Ward and Anatomage Tables, Ellesmere Port Campus’ bespoke Motor Vehicle, Construction and Engineering Workshop and robotics, and Chester Campus’ Media Booths, TV Studios, Gaming Suites, Digital Hub and 3D printers.

Olivia, who was visiting Crewe Campus and is currently studying towards her GCSEs, said:
It’s been a really good evening with lots to see and do. I want to do A Levels when I’ve finished my GCSEs and I like that there’s a lot of choice here. Everyone’s been lovely, so I’m going home happy.
Meanwhile, Mark from Ellesmere Port said that the event was “amazing” and explained:
Everyone is full of energy. I’ve spoken to several different departments about what I could study at Cheshire College.
