LEARN BSL FOR DEAF AWARENESS MONTH

Level 3 student, Emily, was present for one of the lessons and described some of the tasks which she and her classmates had to attempt: “Andrew would spell out the names of places or cars or types of fish in BSL and we had to use the alphabet to understand what he was saying to us.

It was really interesting. I thought it would be complicated or confusing but once you know the letters it becomes quite easy to figure out. I felt proud that I was able to pick it up, because I wasn’t the best at languages in school, so I wasn’t sure I’d be any good at BSL at the start of the lesson. Students at Cheshire College – South & West have been learning the basics of British Sign Language this September, in recognition of Deaf Awareness Month. The beginner-friendly classes were taught by Andrew Mayers; a British Sign Language Teacher who was born profoundly deaf and has spent

over two decades teaching BSL and deaf awareness to people in the local community. As well as discussing his lived experiences with deafness, Andrew taught students the BSL alphabet and issued a series of challenges to test their knowledge.

CELEBRATE OUTSTANDING RESULTS In August 2023, Cheshire College – South & West celebrated its most successful results day to date, with 1,000 students achieving record breaking results, including over 100 students who achieved the highest possible A level grades of A*A*A* or the equivalent in their chosen subject. Students were invited to attend their Campus of study to celebrate with friends, families and teachers before they move onto university, higherdegree apprenticeships or employment. One of the College’s many successful students is Noah who achieved A*, A, B in English Language, French and Psychology and will be going on to study French and Italian at Bristol University:

I’m delighted with the grades I got today, and I can’t wait to start my new course in September. The dedication and professionalism of the lecturers at Cheshire College has been amazing, they’ve really helped me throughout my studies.

A Level student Emily said she was “surprised” after achieving 3 A*s in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics adding: “I’m so happy with my grades and I’m excited to go and study Medicine at the University of Birmingham. I feel like I’ve been really involved with my subjects here and the College gives you the resources to succeed. You feel like you’re welcomed here rather than just learning.” The results day was also significant for the College’s T Level students, as they were the first in their cohort to receive their results since Cheshire College was specially selected by the

government to be one of the country’s T Level providers. Equivalent to 3 A levels, T Levels focus on vocational skills and can help students into skilled employment, higher study or apprenticeships. T Level student, Ruby, said she was “excited [that her] goal of university came true” as she looked forward to studying Primary Education with Qualified Teaching Status (QTS) at Edge Hill University in September 2023. When asked what she’ll remember most about her time at Cheshire College, Early Years T Level student, Helene, said “having the best tutors that supported me from the very beginning and just enjoying my time here over the years with friends.” The College’s BTEC students also had cause for celebration after many of them achieved star distinctions which will allow them to pursue their chosen careers, university placements and higher apprenticeships.

Production Arts Practice BTEC student, Megan, celebrated with friends and tutors on Campus after receiving her results. She spoke about her progression to the Academy of Live Technology in Wakefield and how a highlight of her time at Cheshire College was “receiving technical training by industry experts on Campus and securing a spot on the Eurovision 2023 production team.” Emily achieved an impressive Distinction and Merits in BTEC Applied Science and will be progressing to study Paramedic Science at the University of Wolverhampton. When asked about how Cheshire College has supported her, she responded:

I started off doing A Levels at a different College, but I felt I wasn’t reaching my full potential. So, I moved to Cheshire College, and it’s made all the difference. I’m so happy I made that choice and decided to study here.

ALADDIN FLASHMOB AT CHESHIRE COLLEGE Students and staff at Cheshire College – South & West’s Ellesmere Port Campus received a surprise when a normal lunchtime routine was transformed thanks to an Aladdin-themed flashmob. The Broadway musical, based on Disney’s 1992 animated feature film, will be this year’s Christmas play at the College’s Ellesmere Port Campus. Performing Arts and Technical Theatre students took this lunchtime

opportunity to practice their vocals, choreography and sound design for the unsuspecting crowd. Students sang several songs from the award-winning soundtrack including Arabian Nights, Prince Ali and A Whole New World. The latter was performed from a first-floor balcony by Level 3 Performing Arts Practice (Acting) students Oliver and Afiya, who will be playing the roles of Aladdin and Princess

Jasmine, respectively. When asked about the challenges around putting the event together, Level 3 Production Arts Practice student, George, commented: “The whole build up to it was quite suspenseful, trying to figure our speaker placements without feedback and working to a tight turnaround, but the overall project has been really enjoyable to work on and I’m glad it’s gone successfully.” Fellow Production Arts Practice student Sophie Hayes also reflected on the success of the event: “From a technical standpoint, it was very efficient. Nothing went wrong. It was certainly challenging in terms of where the location was, but I think we all quite welcome a challenge! ” Aladdin will be performed at Cheshire College’s Ellesmere Port Campus on 11th, 12th and 13th December. PROFESSIONAL COOKERY STUDENT COMPETES FOR

DELIFRESH YOUNG CHEF OF THE YEAR TITLE A Professional Cookery student at Cheshire College – South & West has successfully qualified for the regional finals of the Delifresh Young Chef of the Year competition. Nathan Price, who studies at the College’s Ellesmere Port Campus, was chosen to compete at the regional finals in Liverpool, out of over 100 entrants. The Delifresh Young Chef of the Year is a national competition which was born to give excitement back to the Hospitality and Catering industry. Each year, the competition showcases outstanding young talent, giving them a springboard to catapult their career and profile. Nathan’s winning dish, which secured him a place at the regionals, consisted of pan-fried calamari, squid ink gnocchi, cockles and pickled cucumber. Upon hearing that he had qualified for the regional finals, Nathan said that he had been speechless at first:

It’s such a privilege to be able to compete. It’s a big step and I’m sure it will be challenging but it will be entertaining too and I’m definitely going to enjoy the experience.

Andrea Huby, who is the Assistant Director for Hair, Beauty and Hospitality at the College’s Ellesmere Port Campus, said that Nathan’s achievement was significant:

This is a professional competition, not a student competition, so Nathan’s success is really commendable. For a Level 3 student to be competing alongside working professionals is just extraordinary. We can’t wait to see what Nathan has in store for the regional finals.

SHECANCODE INTERVIEWS CHESHIRE COLLEGE COMPUTING LECTURER Pami Deol teaches Computer Science Lecturer at Cheshire College – South & West and has extensive experience in the IT industry. In a recent interview with SheCanCode, Pami provided her top tips on becoming a systems analyst and why women are particularly suited to this role.

I may be biased but IT and Computing is the best industry to work in. The diversity of working in the sector, its ever-growing importance to the economy and the incredible people within it make it a wonderful industry to be in. One of the most rewarding roles in the sector is IT systems analytics, a job that requires computing dexterity, attention to detail and excellent teamwork. RECEIVES YOUNG CHEF OF THE YEAR AWARD Cheshire College – South & West Hospitality and Catering student, Amanda Salters, has been awarded the ‘Young Chef of the Year’ award at the 2023 Cheshire Life Food and Drink Awards. The black-tie ceremony, Cheshire Life’s first since 2019, was held at Carden Park Hotel where trophies were handed out across 11 categories. Guests included Lord-Lieutenant of Cheshire Lady Alexis Redmond and Sir Phil Redmond, rock legend Noddy Holder and author and Cheshire Life columnist Suzan Holder, and actress Catherine Tyldesley. Amanda, and the 200+ guests, enjoyed a superb threecourse dinner created especially for the event by the Carden Park chefs. Level 2 Professional Cookery student, Amanda, has achieved great success during her time at Cheshire College as she’s competed in the action-packed Heats for the Nestlé Professional Toque d’Or competition, made it to the final round of Delifresh’s Young Chef of the Year awards and can officially add Cheshire Life’s Young Chef of the Year award to her roster. Cheshire College offers a range of Hospitality and Catering courses where their experienced chefs help students to acquire industry-standard skills and, as part of their vocational training, students work in the College’s kitchens and AA Rosette standard Academy restaurants. Andrea Huby, Assistant Director of Hair, Beauty and Hospitality at Cheshire College, said:

This highly successful company, which is still run by the same family, has designed and manufactured products which have become industry standard for the sports nutrition and car product markets, attracting the likes of Lucozade and Jaguar Land Rover as clients. CHESHIRE AND WARRINGTON PLEDGE CAREERS FAIR Cheshire College – South and West hosted the Cheshire and Warrington Pledge Crewe and Nantwich Careers and Education Fair at their Crewe Campus on the 5th October. Students from local secondary schools in Crewe were invited to attend the event, along with Cheshire College’s own cohort of students, and members of

the general public from 4pm-6pm. Over two thousand students sought advice, information and inspiration on their next step into careers and jobs from the many exhibitors that were at the event including Bakkavor, Bentley Motors, British Army, Mid Cheshire Hospitals Trust, NHS and Right at Home. There were also multiple higher

education, further education and independent training providers present throughout the day. CEIAG Supervisor, Simonetta Pearce, said that the event had been a great success with all who attended it:

NEW ANATOMAGE DISSECTION TABLES PROVIDE 3D EXPERIENCE FOR SCIENCE STUDENTS

Science students on Crewe Campus enjoyed using two new Anatomage dissection tables that arrived on Campus over the Summer. The Anatomage Table is the only fully segmented real human 3D anatomy system. Users can visualise anatomy exactly as they would on a fresh cadaver but the table allows for exploration and learning of human anatomy beyond what any cadaver could offer. Cheshire College Science students can benefit from this specialist equipment as the tables can reconstruct induvial structures in accurate 3D, resulting in an unprecedented level of real accurate anatomy and allowing students to dissect this. Science Lecturer, Lucy Allen, will be representing Cheshire College in October at the Anatomage conference in Milan to explore how best to use the tables in lessons to ensure our students are making the most out of the fantastic equipment.

WELCOMES BRAZILLIAN STUDENTS Cheshire College – South & West has been excited to welcome a cohort of Brazilian students to study at its Crewe and Chester Campuses. The students, who are from the state of Paraíba in Northeastern Brazil, are visiting as part of the College’s International study programme. Over the years, Cheshire College has developed a number of partnerships with schools and other educational establishments around the world, welcoming over 2,000 students and teachers through its doors to date. Seventeen-year-old, Arthur, said that he was enjoying his classes at the College, especially the more unusual lessons such as Photography:

she enjoyed the free time in between lessons when students can enjoy extracurricular activities and meet other students from the UK. The students are staying with host families during their visit; people from the local community who have offered to house the students and help them to learn about British life and culture. Seventeen-year-old Heitor said that he often goes for days out with his host family and is looking forward to an upcoming trip to Chester Zoo. International Programmes Manager Glyn Smith said that the students had made a positive impression around College:

“We’re practicing how to take professional photos at the moment, and I’m really enjoying it.”

We have been delighted to host the students from Paraíba; all their lecturers have said what fantastic students they are. We have also been teaching them about life in the UK and helping them with their English, and we’re in awe of the progress they have made.

Arthur, like most of his Brazilian classmates, has said that this is his first time in the UK. Students have experienced life at both Crewe and Chester Campuses and have found much to enjoy at both sites. Gabriela shared what she liked to do on the Crewe Campus:

I have dance and drama lessons at Crewe, and these are my favourite subjects, so I really enjoy going to this Campus.

Fellow students Adson and Evelin were also complimentary about the College and life both inside and outside of the classroom; with Adson commenting on the quality of the teaching staff, while Evelin said that
