GIVING IMPACT YOUR YOUR

Shaping the future of our school

SHAPING A STRONG FUTURE, TOGETHER

Dear Seahorse Family,

This past year at Christchurch has been defined by growth, energy, and forward momentum—and we are thrilled you’re part of it with us. Across campus and throughout our community, we are seeing the results of your love for our school and the difference it makes when we come together with a shared purpose.

We saw 22% more of you join our donor community from the previous year, and our first Day of Giving was an outstanding success, with 378 of you more than doubling our $100,000 goal to raise over $208,000. Enrollment also reached a milestone with the largest freshman class in school history—49 students. Commencement was another moment of celebration, with 62 graduates ringing the bell, including a record-setting 31 young women, the highest number of female graduates in our history

WE’RE FUELING

CHRISTCHURCH’S GROWTH AND BRIGHT FUTURE

Our students also excelled beyond the classroom. The varsity boys soccer team captured the VISAA Division II State Championship, and our sailors finished fifth in the nation for both team and fleet racing. Our girls softball team is continuing to build their program, and we’re exploring interest in field hockey to expand opportunities for female athletes. At the same time, we advanced our strategic plan, analyzing our place in the market and building a strong foundation for the years ahead. Together, these achievements reflect a school thriving with extraordinary energy and purpose.

What makes this story so inspiring is that none of it would be possible without you—our students, parents, donors, alumni, friends, Board members, faculty, and staff—whose combined strength has fueled this momentum. Your passion, generosity, and unwavering support ensure that today’s students have the same life-changing Christchurch experience that has shaped so many before them.

This Impact Report is more than a collection of numbers; it is a celebration of what happens when we come together. Inside, you’ll read stories of how your support has touched lives and opened doors, preparing students for success today and shaping the school for tomorrow.

It is a joy to be on this journey with you. Thank you for standing with Christchurch, for fueling our progress, and for shaping a strong future—together.

With appreciation,

A

YEAR OF DISCOVERY, TRADITION, AND MILESTONES

From sunrise swims to late-night rehearsals, fiscal year 2025 at Christchurch was full of moments that brought our community together—moments made possible by your generosity.

In the past year, Seahorses cheered each other on in championships for sailing and soccer. Sailors had a record-breaking year winning numerous championships up and down the East Coast, including two top five finishes in national championships. The boys soccer team captured the VISAA Division II State Championship, which Head of School Billy Coyle made sure no one missed. He sent the entire student body and faculty by bus to cheer on the win. The celebration that followed—an all-school pizza party in the stadium parking lot—was one for the books.

The launch of the trap shooting team, growing interest in field hockey, and the arrival of a new fleet of 420 sailboats opened fresh opportunities for competition and exploration. Immersion trips took learning beyond the classroom, while the Curiosity Class series invited faculty and students to dive deep into topics that sparked their

passions. Over 700 college credits were earned in dual enrollment classes.

Traditions remained at the heart of campus life. From Lessons and Carols to Flowering of the Cross, and from the annual Oyster Festival Volunteer Day to Senior Dinners returning to the renovated Head of School’s House, these rituals anchored the year and strengthened our sense of belonging.

This year was also historic. For the first time, equal numbers of boys and girls graduated, a milestone underscoring Christchurch’s evolving legacy. Looking ahead, new science courses and ceramics offerings promise even more opportunities, while wellness programs—from mental health awareness challenges to stressreliever petting zoos—continue to support every Seahorse’s journey.

Your support makes these moments possible. Every championship, every tradition, and every new experience are all made richer by your generosity.

When we set a $100,000 Day of Giving goal, you didn’t just meet it—you doubled it.

When we totaled this year’s Bell Tower Fund gifts, you beat last year.

Day of Giving

On February 5, 2025, we marked the establishing of Christchurch School with our first-ever Day of Giving to recognize when Bishop William Brown approved the opening of Christchurch in early February 1921. You joined us in this recognition with donations of more than $208,000!

Here’s our Day of Giving breakdown:

– 378 generous donors

– 100% of our Board of Governors and Foundation Directors donated

– 4 generous dollar-for-dollar matches totaled $72,000

– 12% of our alumni supported their alma mater

– 17 members from Class of 1993 gave— the most of any class

– 81% of donors covered their processing fees

We look forward to this becoming an annual event that honors our legacy by providing for our future.

The Bell Tower Fund

Also impressive, contributions to the fiscal year 2025 Bell Tower Fund were almost $200,000 more over last year! The Bell Tower Fund is our annual campaign for undesignated giving and our fundraising priority each year. Donations to The Bell Tower Fund support academics, athletics, tuition assistance, faculty and staff professional development, technology, innovation, and more. Your giving shapes the future of our school!

When donor participation soared last year, you pushed it even higher.

Why? Because Seahorse generosity is unmatched!

About Giving to Christchurch

Christchurch tuition and fees cover a portion of the true cost of attendance. Your generosity covers the rest. Whether for specific needs or general use, your giving supports all aspects of life at Christchurch. Your participation also matters, as involvement often factors into earning major gifts and grants or attracting volunteers. We are better together because of your support.

*Total funds raised were down from last year’s $2.8M mainly due to a large planned gift in fiscal year 2024.

“I love that teachers here incorporate the campus into what we do, especially in science when we explore the waterfront. We’ve gone out on the boat and skimmed for microplastics and plankton. Then, we took what we found back to the classroom and used these really cool microscopes that connect to your computer and take pictures to examine what we had gathered.“

A Lasting CONNECTION TO CHRISTCHURCH

For Craig Dozier, Christchurch School is more than a place where her late husband, Jack ’65, graduated 60 years ago. It’s where his love of the Rappahannock River deepened, lifelong friendships were forged, and the values that shaped his life were strengthened. It’s also where the Dozier family’s story has intertwined with Christchurch’s sailing program in ways that continue to ripple today.

Jack grew up in West Point, Virginia, spending summers on the water and weekends on his family’s boat. When his parents explored boarding schools, he wasn’t interested in many of them. In fact, Craig remembers Jack laughing that at some, “he didn’t even get out of the car.” But when he visited Christchurch, the decision was made almost instantly. “The waterfront was the draw,” Craig says. “He saw the river, learned he could bring his boat, and that was it.”

Finding His Place

Christchurch became the place where Jack felt at home. It offered a balance of academics, camaraderie, and the river life he loved. He ran cross country, played the piano by ear, developed close-knit friendships, and built memories that would stay with him forever.

His time at Christchurch wasn’t without challenges. During one school year, Jack became ill and was temporarily paralyzed by an undiagnosed condition. He battled his condition in and out of the hospital for

nearly two years. The school rallied around him, sending schoolwork to his home so he could keep up with his studies and stay on track. This reinforced his deep affection for his school and fellow Seahorses.

The relationships he formed on campus remained some of the strongest of his life—even stronger, Craig says, than those from college. “Those friendships lasted decades,” she reflects. “They were a big part of why Christchurch always stayed so meaningful to him.”

A Love for the Waterfront

After college and early years in Richmond, Jack and Craig eventually settled in Deltaville, where they built a life and career on the water. Together, they opened a ship’s store, built multiple marinas, and developed a business that reflected their shared passion for boating.

Jack’s expertise and vision naturally flowed back to Christchurch. He designed the school’s dock, and Craig and her sons funded the school’s first fleet of sailboats—a memorial gift after Jack’s passing.

It is commemorated with the “home of the Jack Dozier ’65 Fleet” banner found at Christchurch’s waterfront. More recently, the family joined with other donors in purchasing a new fleet, advancing Christchurch’s sailing program and expanding opportunities for students.

“He believed the river was part of what makes Christchurch so special,” Craig says, “and we’ve always wanted other students to experience that, too.”

Honoring the Past, Investing in the Future

Jack passed away in 2014, but his legacy endures—not just in the dock he designed or the boats that bear his name, but in the generations of students discovering themselves on the river.

Craig and her sons, Ned and John, continue to support Christchurch, especially its waterfront initiatives and The Bell Tower Fund. “The school had such a profound impact on Jack’s life and, through him, on our whole family,” Craig says. “Staying involved feels like honoring him and ensuring other students have the same opportunities.”

For Craig, Christchurch represents more than nostalgia; it represents relevance. “In today’s world, a foundation like Christchurch gives young people such a good start,” she says. “Not everyone needs the same path. Whether it’s college, a trade, or an apprenticeship, a place like Christchurch prepares students for what’s next—and does it in a safe, supportive environment.”

A Shared Story

Looking back, Craig finds it meaningful that Christchurch continues to shape her family’s story even decades after Jack first stepped onto campus. It’s where he fell more in love with the water, where friendships were formed that lasted a lifetime, and where the school community rallied around him when he needed it most.

“Our support comes from gratitude,” Craig says, simply. “Christchurch gave so much to Jack, and to us. Helping today’s students experience the same thing is the best way we know to give back.”

A Place to LEARN, GROW, AND DISCOVER

When Tom and Laura Lawler first visited Christchurch with their son, Matthew ’09, they weren’t sure what to expect. Boarding school wasn’t something they had envisioned, but an educational counselor had suggested it. Matthew encouraged them to explore the idea in earnest after uninspired visits to day schools near home. Once he’d seen several boarding school options, Christchurch stood out.

“It just felt like the right fit for him,” Laura recalls. “Christchurch was open, welcoming, and flexible in a way that resonated with Matthew. He was immediately comfortable there.”

The school even allowed Matthew the chance to stay overnight during his visit—something other schools didn’t do—and that sealed the decision.

A Place to Thrive

Matthew enrolled as a ninth grader in the fall of 2005. Like any big transition, it took time to settle in, both at school for Matthew and for Tom and Laura back home in their newly empty nest.

“It was awful. I didn’t want to send my 15-year-old son to boarding school and not see him every day,” Tom recalls. But Laura, an only child like her son, thought it would give Matthew the chance to spread his wings, though it did break her heart to see him go.

Quickly, however, Tom came around. “When I picked him up to come home for the first time, he said, ‘Boy, did I make the right choice in schools.’”

Christchurch’s small class sizes and close-knit community gave Matthew the kind of individual attention and personal connection that allowed him to thrive. The Learning Skills Program provided just the right amount of support, helping him develop study habits and confidence and bringing out the best in his learning style.

“Christchurch met Matthew where he was,” Laura explains. “They gave him tools, encouragement, and opportunities—and let him grow into his own independence.”

Discovering New Passions

When Matthew first toured Christchurch, the waterfront barely registered. He was focused on tennis, and that’s where he expected to spend his time. But when the tennis program ended, friends encouraged him to try sailing. Surprisingly, he got hooked.

During Matthew’s time at Christchurch, the sailing program was just beginning to develop into the success it is today. He became part of that growth, helping his team compete at nationals and earning recognition as one of the top crews in the state his senior year.

“Sailing wasn’t something we ever imagined would become part of Matthew’s life. It certainly wasn’t a part of our family,” Laura says. “But Christchurch introduced him to it, and it opened up a whole new world for him.”

That new passion stayed with Matthew well beyond graduation. He went on to sail at Washington College, coached the Christchurch sailing team for a year, and today is the General Manager of the James Creek Marina in Washington, D.C.

An Experience That Lasts

For Tom, Laura, and Matthew, the years at Christchurch were transformative. Christchurch opened doors to possibilities he might never have explored otherwise. He made friends with people from around the world. He experienced new ways of thinking and learning. He was prepared for college in a way that only a boarding student could be.

“Christchurch gave Matthew confidence, independence, and experiences he wouldn’t have had anywhere else,” Tom says. “It really set him on his path. Our neighbors at home saw what was happening for Matthew and wished they had considered Christchurch for their own children.”

The Lawlers remain grateful for the way Christchurch shaped Matthew’s journey and continue to support the school so others can find their place, too. “We’re thankful for what Christchurch gave our son,” Laura says. “It’s about giving back so future students have the same opportunities to grow, discover, and succeed.”

Looking back, Tom reflects on how unexpected the journey turned out to be. “Sending Matthew to Christchurch was one of the hardest decisions we ever made,” he says. “And it became one of the very best.”

A FOUNDATION BUILT Together

Today, Cas Sydnor ’96 lives in Charleston, South Carolina, with his wife and three teenage boys. He has built a steady career in the disposable food service essentials industry, where he’s worked since 2003. In recent years, he has also reconnected more deeply with Christchurch School—and he remains grateful both to the school and to his parents, whose vision made the experience possible.

In 2020, Cas helped launch a scholarship to honor his late classmate, Hunter Stratton ’96, with the support of many fellow alumni. The idea had been planted years earlier when Hunter passed away in college from a car accident, but it took root decades later. “It was a way to reconnect with people I hadn’t seen in years and to recognize what Christchurch gave us,” Cas says.

Although the scholarship marks a new chapter in his involvement, Cas never fully stepped away from Christchurch. He stayed close to classmates, attended reunions and alumni oyster roasts in Charleston, and carried fond memories of his high school years. “Those years really gave me a reset,” Cas reflects. “They shaped who I am today.”

Looking Back

Cas arrived at Christchurch in 1992 as a ninth grader from Birmingham, Alabama. His parents wanted him to have a different kind of high school experience, with ties back to Virginia where the family had roots. At first, Cas was hesitant to leave behind friends at home. But by his sophomore year, his outlook had shifted.

“At one point I told my mom I didn’t want to stay,” he remembers. “She said, ‘Okay,’ and called my bluff. I realized I had it pretty good. You’re with your friends all the time, hanging out. I had great teachers. It was a special experience.”

Life at Christchurch quickly became full of lasting memories: bonds in the freshman dorm, pickup basketball games, video game marathons, and a school trip to Europe that opened his eyes to the world. He also remembers the impact of certain teachers, like Ms. Adkins in physics. “She told me she wasn’t going to give up on me,” Cas recalls. “That meant a lot.”

Sports were another important part of his life. Baseball was his main focus, but he also played football and basketball. “We had great coaches who pushed us and gave us confidence,” he says.

Carrying It Forward

After graduation, Cas attended the College of Charleston, where three of his Christchurch classmates also enrolled. Having that shared experience made the transition easier and reinforced the lifelong friendships he had built.

Now, Cas and his wife Jacqueline are parents to three sons, a 16-year-old and twin 13-year-olds. With their oldest attending an Episcopal-based high school in Charleston, Cas can’t help but notice that what’s being formed in their son is similar to what was formed in him, making him appreciative of his parents’ role even more.

“I imagine that me going away was harder on my mom than I realized at the time,” he reflects. “But she trusted it was the right thing to do. Looking back, she was right.”

For Cas, the discipline, accountability, and responsibility he developed at Christchurch remain cornerstones of his adult life. “Those high school years are such a formative time,” he says.

Looking Ahead

Cas says his decision to be more deeply connected to Christchurch today is about gratitude—to the school, to his parents, and to the opportunities those years provided. “It’s a nod of recognition and thankfulness to Christchurch,” he says, “and thankfulness to my parents for doing something different and giving me the opportunity.”

Through the scholarship created in Hunter’s memory, Cas has also found new purpose. “The amount any of us gives to Christchurch never matters,” he says. “It’s about recognizing that the school can’t provide all these things without our support and thanking the place that helped create who we are. I’m sure we all want today’s students to have opportunities to build confidence in themselves, just like we did.”

Gifts in Kind

“Christchurch prepared me to serve others from a heart of duty and honor. The lessons I learned about teamwork and leadership formed the foundation of my life. It was also at Christchurch that I met my first Christian basketball coach, Mr. Steve Shanta. I was 14 years old. He changed my life with a basketball and a Bible.”
George

SUMMARY FINANCIAL INFORMATION

The following represents summary financial information of the Foundation as of June 30, 2025.

$67k

$200k

$1.6M

Christchurch has long-term debt obligations to bondholders and to Church Schools in the Diocese of Virginia totaling $4,325,000 at fiscal year end 2025. While this is very significant and needs to be eliminated, we should all be pleased by the substantial progress we’ve made. As of fiscal year end 2021, the balance was $6,190,000, meaning we’ve repaid $1,865,000 over the last four years! An additional $300,000 repayment is anticipated in fiscal year 2026.
