WINTER FUN IN THE PARKS Winter is that time of year when we would prefer to stay indoors connected to the TV or reading a book rather than getting out and breathing the cold air or enduring the cold north winds of winter. Who can blame us for wanting to stay indoors where it is warm and dry, nestled next to a warm fire or under a blanket? The snow is a foot deep outside anyway, so what could we possibly do on a cold winter day? Your Campbell County Parks have plenty for you to do!

The following information lists many of the fun activities available to us during the winter months even though the temperature may be colder than we like. Have fun this winter. Don’t just sit there wishing it was warmer outside. Throw on that extra sweater or sweatshirt, put on a warm hat and gloves and get outside to enjoy your Campbell County Parks this winter.

WINTER FUN IN THE PARKS SLEDS, INNER TUBES AND TOBOGGANS Next to Shelter #1 at CAM-PLEX Park is a popular hill for sledding, toboggans and inner tubes. A bench at the top of the hill provides a place for parents to watch their children or take a break. For shorter runs, try the hills near the tennis courts or playground at Bicentennial Park. Lasting Legacy Park also has a short sledding hill that is popular with younger children.

SLEDDING SAFETY TIPS 1. Choose safe conditions. Sled only on snowcovered hills. Never sled on ice or icy slopes. 2. Check the hill before sledding. Make sure the hill and run-off area are free of rocks, trees, fences, posts, and other obstacles. Never sled toward or near roads, parking lots or areas where vehicles travel. 3. Allow plenty of room to stop. Choose a hill with a long, clear run-off area. Do not build or use jumps or ramps. 4. Sit up and face forward. Never sled headfirst or in a face-down position. Keep your head toward the back of the sled. 5. Dress for the weather. Wear warm clothing, boots, gloves and a hat. Check young children’s hands and feet regularly for signs of cold or frostbite. 6. Supervise children. Parents and caregivers should closely supervise young children and choose a hill appropriate for their age and ability. Sledding can result in serious injury, even when safety precautions are followed. Use caution, know your surroundings and enjoy a safe winter!

WINTER WALKING/RUNNING The pathways at Bicentennial Park, CAM-PLEX Park and Lasting Legacy Park are kept open through- out the winter for walkers and joggers. Please be aware that melting snow may cause slippery conditions on the walking paths and roads so BE CAREFUL when walking or jogging in these areas. Bicentennial Park Soccer Park Path 3,390 feet, 3 laps equals ~ 2 miles CAM-PLEX Park Loop Road Half Mile Lasting Legacy Park 1,750 feet, 3 laps equals ~ 1 mile

WINTER FUN IN THE PARKS CROSS COUNTRY SKIING Cross country skiing is a popular activity when snow conditions are good at CAM-PLEX Park. The ski trails follow some existing walking trails along the pines, wander throughout the arboretum area, and extend into the open fields of the park for a wonderful variety of winter scenery. Vehicle parking and restrooms are available near Shelter #1. Several of the picnic shelters are protected from the wind by trees and provide an excellent opportunity for a winter picnic or get-together. The WPA Building is also available for rent if groups would like a warm place to gather.

PLAYGROUNDS Playgrounds are available in nearly all of the neighborhood and community parks. Benches have been installed in the play area, so parents can be close by to supervise their children while playing and to enjoy the opportunity to interact with their children. Snow and ice make playground equipment very slippery so please use caution when letting children play on the equipment. Winter temperatures also make the play surface harder than normal so be aware that playground surfaces will not be as soft.

PEOPLE AND PETS For some, the most enjoyable way to enjoy their outdoor experience is with their four-legged pal. It is advisable to have leash handy while walking your dog in the park. Pet waste bags are available in Lasting Legacy Park, Bicentennial Park and CAM-PLEX Park. Please clean up after your pets and deposit the waste in a trash can or dumpster. Your thoughtfulness in cleaning up after your pet keeps the park nicer and makes the next person’s visit to the park more enjoyable.

WYOMING ARBOR DAY - MONDAY, APRIL 26 Arbor Day without a tree to plant would be like springtime without birds singing. Periodic dry periods plague our region from time to time and we have realized that in this dry climate drought periods are something that we must learn to live with. Planting trees is not discouraged during dry periods because of the many benefits that trees provide to parks and the community. Please consider planting a tree on Arbor Day or working with a civic group or school group to improve the community we call home. The last Monday in April is Wyoming Arbor Day and plans are underway in Gillette and Wright for a tree planting celebration. “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the next best time is now.”

WINTER FUN IN THE PARKS DISC GOLF An 18-hole disc golf course is available free of charge in CAM-PLEX Park. The front course begins at Shelter #6 with the tee pads and baskets spread out through the trees east of the main park area. The back course heads east from Shelter #6 and curves back around to the south and west through the open meadows before heading back to the parking area. A map of the course and score card is available at: https://campbellcountywy.gov/discgolf

BICENTENNIAL PARK The playground system near the concession stand boasts several challenges and takes play to new heights. The main structure has three levels that reach to a height of 14’ with two long tube slides that exit from the top platform and a lean out structure that allows kids the opportunity to look straight down from the top deck. Slides, climbing walls, log climbers, bridges, and ladders abound on the play structures for an appealing and adventuresome experience. The old standby swings and merry-go-round are included in the playground along with spring ride toys for the little tots. Softball, baseball and soccer are all popular sports in Gillette and Bicentennial Park maintains fields for your enjoyment. Six regulation softball fields and two baseball fields are available for use throughout the summer. The fields are used for league play every night of the week but may be used on weekends if tournaments are not already scheduled. Check with the Recreation Center for field availability. Soccer goals are left out on the fields through the summer for those interested in playing pickup games. Sidelines and penalty boxes are not marked as the goals will be moved occasionally to prevent wear spots from developing in the goal areas. Eight lighted tennis courts are available on a first come-first served basis. The light operators are located near the south end of the courts and a strobe light will begin flashing when your time is about up. There is no charge for the use of the lights.

PARK MAINTENANCE PEOPLE AND PETS For some, the most enjoyable way to enjoy their outdoor experience is with their four-legged pal. It is advisable to have leash handy while walking your dog in the park. Pet waste bags are available in all county parks. Please clean up after your pets and deposit the waste in a trash can or dumpster. Your thoughtfulness in cleaning up after your pet keeps the park nicer and makes the next person’s visit to the park more enjoyable.

PITCH IN Litter detracts from the enjoyment we all experience when visiting a park, so please make the effort to clean up after your picnic and use the trash containers that are available for trash. The extra effort you put into keeping the parks nice will further the enjoyment that others will have while visiting the parks.

ADOPT A PARK The staff of the Parks and Recreation Department makes every effort to keep the parks in the best condition possible. With the help of citizens of Campbell County, we would like people to take an interest in their neighborhood park by keeping in touch with the parks staff and making suggestions for park improvements. Giving a helping hand with litter and trash pickup benefits everyone. Vandalism occasionally occurs in the parks and your help in notifying the Parks Division will help in deterring future vandalism and maintain the safety of the park by getting damaged property repaired. We are proud to maintain the County Parks for you and want the citizens of Campbell County to be able to enjoy their experience while visiting the parks. The Parks Division can be contacted at 686-5187 or contact the Administration Office at 682-7406.
