SOULSTICE

SOULSTICE

Spring 2023 - Student Wellness Center

Project Brief

The historic Horse Barn on the UW Madison campus will be repurposed into a student wellness and pet therapy center that aims to promote student well-being. The focus of the center will be on offering well-being classes, workshops, individual and group support, and creating an environment that is inclusive, welcoming, and a respite for students from the daily stresses of university life, while also honoring the historic qualities of the building, and celebrating its new purpose.

Concept

Soulstice is a student wellness and pet therapy center that embodies the power of interaction. The design concept is inspired by the solstice, a time when the sun’s path reaches its highest or lowest point, symbolizing a change in seasons and the potential for renewal. The solstice represents the connection and interatcion between the Earth and the Sun and how that effects our life on earth. Soulstice is a place where students can connect with themselves, others, and animals, fostering a sense of community and well-being.

TREE HOUSE

Fall 2023 − Animal Rehabilitation

Explore and refine interior design skills while responding to current events and the ever-changing world around us. Follow the design process from research, programming, conceptual and schematic design, full design development and presentation.

Concept

Tree House, a wildlife rehabilitation center in Manaus, Brazil, redefines conservation through an innovative design rooted in the concept of ‘Community as an Ecosystem.’ The center prioritizes sustainable practices and features open learning spaces, experiential exhibits, and interactive learning modules for sloth rehabilitation and environmental education. Beyond wildlife, Tree House becomes a hub for community engagement, fostering collaboration through a community garden and providing a platform for local artists with a retail/gallery space. This holistic concept envisions a harmonious coexistence of nature, education, and community, fostering a shared sense of responsibility for the environment.”

Tree House is built on the principle of ‘Community as an Ecosystem.’ Our vision is to create a thriving and interconnected ecosystem where the well-being of wildlife, individual enrichment, and community empowerment converge seamlessly.

FLOOR PLANS

The floor plans of Tree House ingeniously merge functionality with nature. The first floor introduces visitors to a reception, community garden, and versatile classrooms emphasizing the play-nature connection. Private medical areas and sloth habitats are discreetly accessed behind a secure door, while the classrooms offer flexibility with adjustable walls and views of sloth habitats. Ascending to the second floor reveals staff living quarters and a public learning space highlighting sloths and Amazon ecology. A canopy deck on this level provides expansive rainforest views, enhancing the immersive experience.

FLOOR TWO

EXPLORE THE COMMUNITY GARDEN

The community garden offers a hands-on experience in growing and harvesting food creating an interactive environment where education and enjoyment thrive together

TAKE A WALK ALONG THE CANOPY DECK

The canopy deck is an elevated walkway above the community garden with breathtaking views of the rainforest. This space not only features informative signs about rainforest ecology but also serves as a tranquil retreat for community members to relax and reap the benefits of connecting with nature.

Ecosystem: “Ecosystem” spaces are public spaces including the habitat viewing areas, open learning spaces, and the canopy deck

Individual: Private spaces that require acoustic care and include staff living spaces, phone rooms, and offices

Community: Public areas that benifit the community as a whole, including the retail/gallery space, the classrooms and open leanring spaces

Biome: The “biome” of Tree House is its site. The site has access to the amazon river, the city of Manaus, and views of the rainforest

SPACE TYPOLOGIES

Spatially organized around five ecological trophic levels, Tree House features individual spaces like staff living areas and sloth habitats, ensuring acoustic integrity. Semi-private population spaces encourage interaction through lounges and classrooms. Community areas serve the public with retail spaces, open learning zones, and gardens. Ecosystem spaces offer open, public zones like viewing areas and canopy decks. The site itself defines Tree House’s biome, connecting visitors to the Amazon River, Manaus city views, and the surrounding rainforest.

PLAY IN THE TREEHOUSE

The tree house play space includes elevated platforms and structures allowing children to engage in physical activity, fostering a sense of adventure and exploration, while the open design encourages social interaction and connection with the natural surroundings.
