Cultural Club Reports OKINAWA NENCHOSHA CLUB UPDATE By Gloria Reynon
GREAT TUG-OF-WAR FESTIVAL This annual event originated in the 15th century as a ritual to pray for a bountiful harvest, good health, and fertility. Held on Route 58, the festival features a spirited tug-of-war between the East and West. This year, it will take place 10/10–10/12/2026 in Naha, Okinawa. In 1995, the 200-meter-long, 43-ton rice-straw rope was listed in the Guinness World Records as the world’s largest tug-of-war rope. Twenty-eight smaller ropes are attached to the giant rope, allowing everyone to join in the fun. After the battle, participants take a piece of the rope home for good luck. Aug 27: Naleo Nahe Nahe from Mililani, headed by Pauline Kamisato, who entertained us with a beautiful blend of Hawaiian music & Japanese music, hula & Japanese dancing. The group was formerly led by the late Kumu Rosemarie Dung. Popular selections included Hanalei Moon, Furusato, Island Style, O Waimea, Pua Mana & Hana Hou: Hawaiʻi Aloha. The finale featured dancing to Ashibinaa, followed by everyone joining in the lively kachashi to close the performance. September 3: Palolo Hongwanji Karaoke Group sang Happy Birthday! to ONC members with birthdays in September. The group sang Sing, Michizure & Kawa No Nagare No You Ni, accompanied by dancer Heidi. Susan sang Nirinsou, Iwai Zake & Bune. Millie sang Kamome Wa Kamome & Someone to Watch Over Me. Larry sang Koko Ni Sachi Ari. Rod played the ukulele as he sang a medley of oldies. The highlight of the performance was ONC member Carolyn & Rod’s sweet rendition of Shimanchu Nu Takara, ending with the two forming a heart. September 10: Project Dana (pronounced “dah-nah”) is founded on the belief in giving & is a faith-in-action program providing services to seniors & caregivers. “Dana” is a Sanskrit, Pali & Buddhist term meaning generosity or giving. The performers, including ONC member Sharon (Sanae), sang & danced their hearts out. Their lively performance of New York, New York was a highlight of the program. September 17: Faye Tamakawa ofl the Himawari Group sang & danced to Okinawan & Japanese songs. Reiko Matsuoka sang Ringo no Uta & Kohan no Yado. Hatsuko Nakazato performed Akita Daikoku Mai, while Deanna Overbey sang Yuki Sumire. Yoshiko Sickels sang Ichi Kubiri. Faye returned to sing & dance with a purple umbrella to Onatsu Seijuro. The quirky Roy Hamasaki entertained with Itako Gasa, highlighted by a fun magic show featuring strings. September 24: Yukon Shiroma UH is a UH teacher of Okinawan Dance for students of all ethnicities. Kachashi is actually the music & achame is the dance. The whistle signals the start of dancing. Bouncing keeps music in your body. It is rude to sit & not join in. She taught Uchinanchu with song and dance. ONC members had a lot of fun. Lessons (Let’s Sing Uchinanchu) are on YouTube by Brandon Akio Ing Umaribi kariyushi yaibīn (Happy Birthday) to: Arlene Gray, Sayo Kochi, Fred Lum, Yaeko Miyahira, Waynne Miyasato, Annette Miyashiro, Evelyn (Evie) Myers, Leroy Nagasako, Joe Pacyao, Yasuko Takeuchi, Phil Uyehara, Valerie C. (Val) Wong, & Janice Yokooji

Cultural Club Updates JAPANESE CULTURAL CLUB UPDATE By Clarice Kumura
HALLOWEEN IN JAPAN Halloween has become increasingly popular in Japan. Its rise began in 2000, when Tokyo Disneyland hosted its first Halloween event. The celebration was a success, and other theme parks soon followed. Today, Halloween is one of Japan’s biggest annual events. Halloween in Japan is not simply an imitation of the American tradition. Trick-or-treating is uncommon, and because the holiday is relatively new, many customs observed elsewhere have not taken root. Instead, the celebration centers on creativity and costume play. Many people in Japan enjoy dressing up, and Halloween offers an ideal opportunity to create and wear elaborate costumes. Here in Hawaii, if you plan to take your keikis for trick-or-treating, Be Safe. OCTOBER EVENTS:05 - Victor’s Kapakahi Group 12 - Variety Talent Show 19 - Woody and Friends 26 - Honolulu Police Department – “Senior Safety Awareness” RECAP OF SEPTEMBER EVENTS: On September 14, Sensei Edwin Ramones and the talented singers from his Farrington Adult Education karaoke class sang Broadway, oldies, and movie songs. The event also celebrated Grandparents’ Day with bentos. On the 21st. we enjoyed the performance by Paranku Hawaii, led by Ellen Higa. TANJOUBE OMEDETOU GOZAIMASU TO: Carol Anzai; Arlene Gray; Edward Lee; Waynne Miyashiro; Marvi Shibuya; and Joyce Wong. May you all have a Blessed Birthday and many more!
