JAPANESE CULTURAL CLUB UPDATE
By Clarice Kumura
In the heat of the summer, the lure of the beach is universal. As in Hawaii, the people of Japan also enjoy the sand and the water. However, in Japan, the popular beach game is a pinata-like game called “suika wari” or watermelon splitting. Placing a watermelon on a sheet of tarp, people attack it with a mallet. Once the fruit is conquered, everyone gets a piece of it for refreshment As the weather warms, the traditional Japanese costume changes to a light, cotton kimono called yukata Accessories include wooden sandals called geta, worn without the sock-like foot covering called tabi. One very colorful festival in summer is the Tanabata, celebrating star-crossed lovers represented by the stars Vega and Altair. Today people celebrate Tanabata by writing wishes on tanzaku, strips of paper, that are hung from decorated bamboo trees.
August Events: 03: O Bon
10: Hawaii Energy
17: Birthday Mellow Friends
24: Juke Box Singers

It’s now the 8th month of the year, time really flies fast. Foremost, we thank our heavenly creator for all of the grace, blessings and protection he is giving us Hoping that FCCH will flourish to the end and that all members will be cooperative with whatever changes or implemented by our President, madam Wilma Ibay, may there be peace, love and understanding among the members and may arrogance subside.
Our club activities at the center are as follows:
7-4-26- Just reported to the Center for practice in preparation for big events.
7-8-26- We had the Candidates Fair at Lanakila, where we met some of the candidates running for different positions. They distributed different fruits and vegetables, t-shirts, ball pens. Hot dog plates were also give to everybody who attended.
7-11-26- Just had the routine, praying, singing, and practicing Filipino and line dance in preparation for the incoming events.
7-18-26 We had a potluck at the Center celebrating the birthday celebrants for June- Carmen Bautista and Puna Frank, and for July- Letty Dolor, Doris Maielua, Raquel Ganti, and our advisor Kuya Rudy Ibay. “Get well soon Kuya,” they were given lei and envelopes, we had a small program and then enjoyed the food which was served, we parted at 11:00 a.m.
7-20-26 We visited Kuya Rudy at Kuakini Hospital to celebrate his b-day!
7-25-26- Last Saturday of July- we are having a rehearsal in preparation for a big event on 8-15-26 to be held at Ala Moana Hotel celebrating 54th anniversary of FCCH. Some dignitaries will be attending.
Just for the record, I was delegated by our President Ms Wilma Ibay to be her proxy attending PAB meetings every last Wednesday of the month and committee meetings every 2nd Wednesdays of the month. They always talk about the improvements made at the Center.
This concludes FCCH report for August! Thanks and God bless everybody!
