ELEMENTARY KIDS & FAMILIES For Sunday, May 29, 2016
This resource is designed to allow your family to have time in God’s Word BEFORE your children attend church. Because God’s plan is for parents to be the primary spiritual nurturers of their children’s faith, we want YOU to be the one to introduce this part of The Big God Story to them. HomeFront: A Spiritual Parenting Resource This monthly magazine gives your family ideas for creating fun, spiritually forming times in your home—setting aside sacred space in the midst of your active, everyday lives. REMEMBER & CELEBRATE
Spring Lesson 13
DID YOU KNOW? • The Israelites celebrated seven annual festivals: Passover, Feast of Unleavened Bread, Festival of First Fruits, Feastof Harvest, Feast of Trumpets, Day of Atonement, and the Feast of Tabernacles (or Booths). • During the feasts, the Israelites ate, danced, sang, played instruments, prayed, and offered sacrifices to God. • During the Festival of the Day of Atonement, or Yom Kippur, the Israelites rededicated the temple to the Lord and repented of their sins. • This festival in particular will be fulfilled by God’s judgment of the nations.
YOUNGER KIDS
Festival of the Day of Atonement: Remembering and Celebrating God’s Righteousness
Your child should know that there are consequences to her behavior. Your consistent structure will help her learn what consequences she can expect as she learns to make wise choices.
JUST FOR FUN
OLDER KIDS
Give your family several situational challenges that present opportunities to choose the right or wrong thing to do. For instance, you might say, “If you found a wallet with money in it, what would you do?” Explain that righteousness means being morally just or right. Then share with them that only one person on this earth has ever truly led a righteous life: Jesus. Read Romans 3:22–26. Discuss how we can be redeemed and what it means to have faith in Jesus Christ. Pray, thanking God that He sent Jesus to become the sacrifice for our sins.
Your child may develop strong feelings about injustices in the world around him. Remind him that God is the only righteous judge. Encourage his involvement in causes close to his heart.
SUMMER U Over 250 elementary kids are registered for Summer U and some courses are full, so sign up today for Summer U, if you haven’t, at Summer U.org. Parents, we can always use your help to staff this event. You can register on the website to help when you sign up your child(ren).
TEACHABLE MOMENTS After reading the Scripture passage, discuss the following together: • Why did Jesus have to die on the cross? • What does the word righteous mean? • How is God righteous?
BLESSING A blessing can be a spoken prayer of commission, a portion of Scripture, or words of encouragement and guidance over your child. For more information about blessing your child, see the Blessing section in HomeFront: A Spiritual Parenting Resource @ HomeFrontMag.com A blessing to pray over your child: (Child’s name), may you rest in and trust our righteous God who deserves praise and honor. He loves you, protects you, and rejoices in you.
