What does knowing Scripture have to do with making the wise choice? (When we read and understand what’s in the Bible, we can live with God’s wisdom.)
What You Need:
What You Do: Write “devil” on one side of the paper plate and “Jesus” on the other side. Invite your child to play a game. Hand them the paper plate.

Bible Story Jesus Is Tempted in the Desert Luke 4:1-13 (Matthew 4:1-11)
Bottom Line Remembering what’s true can help you make the wise choice.
Say, “I’m going to read some quotes from our Bible story today. If you think the devil said it, show the side of the paper plate that says ‘devil.’ If you think Jesus said it, flip the paper plate to the side that says ‘Jesus.’” Read the following quotes and allow your child to respond. If they get the answer incorrect, don’t tell them yet; just keep moving. “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” (devil) “It is written, ‘Man must not live only on bread.’” (Jesus) “If you worship me, [all the authority of the kingdoms of the world] will be yours.” (devil) “It is written, ‘Worship the Lord your God. He is the only one you should serve.’” (Jesus) “Throw yourself down from here. It is written, ‘The Lord will command his angels to take good care of you. They will lift you up in their hands. Then you won’t trip over a stone.’” (devil) “Scripture says, ‘Do not test the Lord your God.’” (Jesus) If your child got all the answers correct, tell them! If they got one or more incorrect, read Luke 4:1-13 aloud and then play another round. When you’re finished, say, “The devil tried to trick Jesus. But because Jesus knew what was true, He made the wise choice.”
What is the difference between a wise and foolish choice? What are some potential consequences of a wise choice? What are some potential consequences of an unwise or foolish choice? Parent: Share one way that you make a point to remember what’s true—i.e. memorizing a verse, writing a verse on a notecard and putting it on your desk, or thinking about how a verse can change how you speak, think, or act.
Prayer Use this prayer as a guide, either after talking about the Bible story or sometime before bed tonight: “Dear God, thank you for giving us so many places to go to find out what’s true. We can look at the stories in the Bible of others who followed you, we can talk to grown-ups who have a relationship with you, and we do activities like this to learn more about you. Help us remember what’s true, especially when we face a tough choice and have to figure out what the wise choice is. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.”
