INTRODUCTION
Year 9 marks an important stage in a student’s learning journey, where increasing independence and choice are central to academic and personal growth. At this level, students are encouraged to take greater ownership of their learning by personalising aspects of their curriculum through the selection of specialist elective courses.
Alongside the compulsory learning areas of Religious Education, English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, Physical Education and Health Education, students select six specialist elective courses across the year, typically three electives per semester.
One of the distinctive features of Year 9 at Corpus Christi College is the sheer breadth and diversity of specialist electives available, offering students a rare opportunity to explore a wide range of interests and talents. From creative and design focused courses such as Textiles in Interior Design, to performance, enterprise, STEM and sport specific offerings including Basketball Playmakers, students are encouraged to experiment, discover new passions and develop skills across multiple learning areas.
Most Year 9 electives are semester long courses and may be studied once only, with the following exceptions:
• Spark Path Music, Spark Path Visual Arts, Spark Path Drama and Spark Path Dance are full year courses and count as one elective choice in both Semester 1 and Semester 2.
• Italian or French as a Second Language are also full year specialised courses and count as one elective choice across both semesters.
When choosing specialist electives, students are encouraged to consider their interests, strengths and curiosities, and to view Year 9 as a year of choice, trial and experience, rather than commitment to a fixed pathway. Students should feel empowered to try something new, knowing that their selections do not limit future options.
For this reason, Corpus Christi College intentionally avoids using Year 9 electives as prerequisites for Year 10 courses. For example, a student may still be eligible to study Outdoor Education in Year 10 even if they did not select it in Year 9. The subject selection process in Year 9 is designed to keep future pathways open and flexible.
Students are encouraged to discuss their subject choices with families, caregivers and teachers to make informed decisions. Ultimately, students are expected to take responsibility for their selections and for completing the online subject selection process by the advertised due date.
RATIONALE
APPROACH TO SUBJECT SELECTION
Students should use specialist subjects to continue to explore their interests and passions.
Students should involve their families and stakeholders in the decision process but take overall responsibility for their final selections.
Students must choose a maximum of 6 elective subjects in total for the year, keeping in mind that some electives run for the full year. The majority of Year 9 students will need to select three electives for Semester 1 and 3 for Semester Two. Some electives are subject to class numbers and availability. For this reason, students must also select two reserve electives.

All students will cover the Year 9 ‘Come Follow Me’ Course of Study mandated by the Bishops of Western Australia through Catholic Education Western Australia.
At the core of the Religious Education program is the investigation of, and reflection on, enduring questions of life and faith. Content examines Sacred Scriptures and the Tradition and the teaching of the Catholic Church, as expressed in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
The Year 9 Religious Education program aims to lead students to a deeper understanding of the Catholic faith tradition as they progress through the scope and sequence of content, leading into the Year 10 course.
All students are expected to participate positively and actively in the formal Religious Education program. Students are expected to complete all of the assessment requirements for their chosen course.

CREATIVE WRITING
In this unit, you will enter the exciting world of creative writing. If you want to become an insightful thinker, observant reader and imaginative writer, this elective will provide you with the unique opportunity to develop your creativity through the writing process. You will read short stories and poems, and then write your own. You will critique the works of your classmates and help one another on a path of self-discovery and skill improvement. Whilst the importance of spelling, grammar and punctuation will be reinforced, this course places great focus on the creative process and using experimentation to create interest and engagement.
By the end of the unit, you will:

SPEAK UP: INTRODUCTION TO PUBLIC SPEAKING
Speak Up introduces students to the foundations of public speaking and effective oral communication in a supportive and encouraging environment. In this course, students may explore how ideas can be expressed clearly and confidently through spoken language. Through a range of speaking activities, students will be supported to practise sharing ideas, structuring short speeches and communicating with an audience.
Students may engage in activities such as prepared and short impromptu speeches, group presentations and introductory persuasion or debating tasks. The course has a strong focus on developing foundational speaking skills, including basic speech structures, audience awareness and persuasive techniques. Students will also be introduced to non verbal communication strategies such as posture, eye contact, gesture and vocal clarity.
Throughout the course, students will be encouraged to reflect on their speaking performances and develop confidence in expressing their ideas. Speak Up is designed to build essential communication skills that support learning across all subject areas and provides a strong foundation for students who may wish to further develop their public speaking skills in From Page to Podium in Year 10.

DIVERSE LEARNING SUPPORT
LEARNING LAB
Year 9 Learning Lab is a year-long elective, offered in place of a language, designed to support students in developing the skills and strategies needed to succeed across all areas of their learning.
The program focuses on strengthening executive functioning skills, including organisation, time management, task initiation, goal setting, and maintaining focus. Students are explicitly taught how to manage their workload, break down tasks, and develop effective study habits that will support them across all subject areas.
Students will also build their understanding of metacognition—developing awareness of how they learn, how to monitor their own progress, and how to apply strategies such as planning, reflecting, and adjusting their approach to learning tasks.
A key component of the course is supporting students to approach assessments with increasing confidence, with guided practice in planning, structuring, and completing tasks across a range of subjects. Targeted support in literacy and numeracy is also provided where required.
Learning Lab is particularly well-suited to students who:
• would benefit from additional support with literacy and/or numeracy
• may find organisation, time management, or independent learning challenging
• have identified learning needs or adjustments based on a diagnosed learning profile
• would benefit from explicit teaching of study skills and learning strategies

BUSINESS BEGINNINGS
Students will have the opportunity to investigate, develop and promote their own business venture using innovative business concepts and ICT skills. In this course students will learn the essential entrepreneurship skills of understanding the current marketplace, marketing skills and strategies, basic cash accounting processes, inventory control and negotiation tactics.
CAREERS EXPLORER
Careers Explorer will ignite your awareness to the wide range of career opportunities available to you. You will identify your specific interests and skills and connect those to a range of career pathways of interest to you.
Students will be offered Virtual Work Experience and excursions including Career Expos and trying out different career tasters. You will also engage in a series of activities including My Future to show you where your interests can lead to exciting career opportunities. Students will be able to find out how to plan a career pathway to success.

DICTATORS IN HISTORY
This engaging elective explores the rise of dictators and how they use fear, propaganda, and popular support to gain and maintain control. From Napoleon to modern-day leaders, students will investigate how individuals have shaped history through authoritarian rule and concentrated power.
Through case studies, critical discussions and source analysis, this course provides an excellent foundation for further study in Humanities and Modern History in senior years, while encouraging students to think deeply about leadership, freedom, and the impact of political power.

LEGAL STUDIES
Are you passionate about working in the legal field or understanding your rights and responsibilities? Do you enjoy creating legal arguments or are you an advocate for human rights? Are you interested in trial advocacy or international law?
In this unit you will engage in debates, learn the skills of trial advocacy, discuss United Nations resolutions, examine case studies, deliberate current political issues and participate in mock trials. You will explore the importance of laws, how the legal system operates and Australia’s obligations in international law.

FORENSIC SCIENCE
Are you a Criminal Minds fanatic or a CSI enthusiast? Or maybe you see yourself as a True Crime content creator. If this sounds interesting, then the Criminal Investigations elective is for you.
This elective combines forensics, criminal investigation techniques and psychology to provide you with an insight into the life of a criminal investigator. One term will focus on the forensic analysis of crime scenes, while the second Term looks at criminal profiling and the psychological traits of criminals.
Students are encouraged to choose the, ‘Legal Studies’ elective to see how this forensic evidence is used in Court.
PSYCHOLOGY
Why do we think, feel and behave the way we do? In this exciting introduction to Psychology, you’ll explore how our thoughts, feelings and behaviours are shaped both individually and as part of a group. You’ll dive into the world of Sport Psychology, learning how mental skills like motivation, focus, and team cohesion can influence athletic performance. You’ll also examine famous films through a psychological lens.
The focus then shifts to Social Psychology, where you’ll investigate how people behave in groups, why we conform, and how things like stereotypes and persuasion affect us every day. Year 9 Spark Path Dance is designed for students beginning to see themselves in senior Dance and who are seeking a full-year course that builds strong capability and confidence.
Students will develop their technical skills and performance quality, while exploring how choreographers structure movement with clarity and intention. A focus on disciplined rehearsal practices supports students in building the habits and work ethic expected in senior school Dance.
Throughout the course, students will both create and perform dance works, as well as respond through evaluation and analysis using appropriate dance terminology. This supports the development of academic literacy and prepares students for the demands of ATAR-style study.

EXPLORE MUSIC
This course is designed for students with an interest in contemporary music and live performance. It aims to build foundational musicianship skills while offering a variety of opportunities to perform and create music. The course is open to all students, including those who may not currently be receiving instrumental or vocal lessons.
Year 9 Explore Music provides a platform for students to develop their performance skills and personal musicianship. Students will listen to, respond to, and reflect on music from a range of genres, including R&B, Blues, Pop, Rock and Folk. They will take part in group performance and recording activities, while also

Spark Pathways Visual Art is a dynamic and creative course designed for students who have a distinct passion for art, are curious about the world around them and are eager to express their ideas in imaginative ways. Through a hands-on and exploratory approach, students will experiment with a wide range of materials, techniques, and processes to bring their artistic ideas to life.
Throughout the course, students will develop their skills in areas such as drawing, painting, and mixed media, while also learning how to generate and refine their own creative concepts. Emphasis is placed on both technical skill development and creative thinking, encouraging students to take risks, problem-solve, and build confidence in their artistic voice. Students will explore how artists communicate meaning and
respond to the world, and will be supported to make connections between their own work and contemporary and historical art practices. Reflection and evaluation are also key components, helping students to understand their creative process and identify areas for growth.
Spark Pathways Visual Art provides a supportive and engaging environment where students are encouraged to develop perseverance, independence, and pride in their work. The course is well-suited to students who enjoy practical, creative learning and are keen to develop both their artistic skills and their confidence as learners.

In this practical and creative course, students explore how media and visual design can be used to communicate ideas, tell stories, and engage audiences. PRODUCT DESIGN (CADCAM)
Year 9 Product Design is a semester long course with a focus on computer aided design (CAD) and computer aided manufacturing (CAM). Students develop foundational CAD drawing skills and learn how digital designs can be transformed into physical products using technologies such as 3D printing and laser cutting.
Students produce CAD drawings for both skills based tasks and a major project, applying conventions aligned with Australian Standards for technical drawing. Through practical design tasks, students build an understanding of accuracy, scale and layout when communicating design ideas digitally.
CARING FOR CHILDREN
Caring for Children explores the essential skills, strategies and understandings required to support the growth and wellbeing of young children. Students will engage in a range of hands on learning experiences, including visits to the Junior School, where they interact with staff and students to gain authentic insight into early childhood settings.
The course highlights the role of play in the early years, examining how play supports creativity, learning, development and emotional wellbeing. Students also explore the benefits of nature play, developing an understanding of how outdoor experiences contribute to holistic child development. This unit is well suited to students who are interested in working with children and who wish to develop an understanding of the foundations of quality care and early education.
This course provides a strong foundation for students interested in CAD based pathways and prepares them for further study in Materials Design and Technology (General) – Wood or Metal and Engineering in later years, where CAD, CAM and 3D printing play an increasingly significant role.

Students are encouraged to use a range of specialist hand tools, machines and equipment to develop, design, and create projects using the metal medium. In addition to technical skills such as hollowing, plenishing, use of oxy- acetylene equipment, taper turning, aluminium casting and machine polishing, students will also learn to problem solve and practice workshop safety when handling machines and equipment.

Students are encouraged to use a range of specialist hand tools, machines and equipment to develop, design, and create projects using the wood medium. In addition to technical skills such as the use of hand and power tools, learning structural design elements and working with different materials students will also learn to problem solve and practice workshop safety when handling machines and equipment.

ENGINEERING
In this hands on course, students will explore the world of mechanical engineering through the study of crane structures and pulley systems. Through guided practical activities, students will investigate how these systems are designed to support and move heavy loads, applying engineering principles to real world problems.
Students will design, build and test their own working crane using the engineering design process. As their skills develop, students may choose to design and integrate a pulley mechanism into their crane to improve lifting efficiency and performance. The course culminates in a stress testing challenge, where students evaluate how much weight their crane and pulley system can safely lift.
FOOD TECHNOLOGY
This course introduces students to the foundations of nutrition and healthy eating while developing essential kitchen skills. Through hands on cooking experiences, students will prepare nutritious and visually appealing meals that reflect the nutritional needs and preferences of teenagers.
Using the technology process, students will explore dietary requirements, safe and effective use of kitchen tools, and food presentation techniques. The course encourages informed decision making around food choices and equips students with practical skills to confidently plan, prepare and present high quality meals for themselves, their families and friends.
This practical unit develops creative problem solving, teamwork and foundational engineering skills in a supportive and engaging learning environment, while encouraging students to test, refine and improve their designs.

Throughout the course, students will learn to confidently use sewing machines and overlockers and develop an understanding of basic pattern reading, fabric selection and garment assembly. Through a combination of practical experiences and guided learning, students will build confidence in a range of outdoor settings. Activities are designed to develop essential skills such as communication, collaboration, and decision-making, with an emphasis on working effectively as part of a team.
Students are encouraged to challenge themselves in a supportive environment, developing resilience and independence while learning to manage risk and respond appropriately to different outdoor situations. Developing an awareness of the natural environment also forms an important part of the course.

Soccer Smarts provides students with the opportunity to develop their skills, understanding, and enjoyment of the game in a dynamic and supportive environment. The course focuses on building both technical ability and game awareness, allowing students to grow in confidence as players.
Through a combination of skill development activities, small-sided games, and structured gameplay, students will explore key aspects of soccer, including passing, movement, positioning, and decision-making. Emphasis is placed on understanding how rules, strategies, and tactics influence play within this invasion sport.
Students will be encouraged to reflect on their performance, identify areas for improvement, and apply their growing knowledge to game situations.
EXPECTATIONS
Due to the practical and active nature of Outdoor Education, a strong commitment to safe practices and responsible behaviour is essential. Students must demonstrate the ability to follow instructions, work cooperatively, and adhere to the College Student Code of Conduct at all times.
Participation in Outdoor Education activities is therefore dependent on each student’s consistent demonstration of safe and appropriate behaviour.

Designed for dedicated student-athletes who wish to pursue high levels of sporting performance within their chosen fields. This elective supports students who represent their sport at District, State, National or ACC level and who are committed to representing the College in competitive teams.
Through a structured program, students gain valuable insights into the demands of high-performance sport while developing the habits, knowledge and character required to succeed both on and off the field. Students in the program explore key areas of sport science fundamentals, including training methods, nutrition, recovery, biomechanics and performance analysis, while also engaging in sessions focused on goal setting, mindset and leadership development.
This program provides opportunities to work with external coaches, hear from industry experts and participate in exclusive excursions to elite sporting environments. Alongside athletic development, students are encouraged to grow as leaders within the College community, contributing to a positive culture that reflects the College values.
