Her mom laughed.
I was pulling into the Chili’s parking lot when I noticed a little girl walking toward the front door with her mom. She couldn’t have been more than four or five.
I smiled like an idiot.
She spotted the motorcycle before she spotted me and started waving with her whole body. I laughed, waved back, and gave the bike a little rev before I parked.
Maybe she’ll never think about it again.
By the time I’d shut it off, climbed off, peeled off my gloves, and took my helmet off, she’d stopped walking. She stared at me for a second, then looked up at her mom and yelled, “Mommy! It’s a GIRL on that motorcycle!”
I don’t know why that moment has stayed with me. It lasted maybe thirty seconds, and we went on with our day.
Or maybe, twenty years from now, she’ll be pulling into a parking lot on her own bike. Maybe there’ll be a little kid waving at her, and she’ll smile, give the throttle a little rev, and wave back before she parks. I like that version of the future for her. Kids are awesome. Be awesome to them.

But for a few It may be obvious, I do not worry what others think of me. And am pleased to find most people very nice, friendly and non-judgmental. But for a few… Because I wear riding gear, I am often in public places in clothes others may not find appropriate. To me this is normal. When I have room in my panniers, I may store my jacket and pants. Wearing Shorts (that were under my riding pants) and a shirt, looking very normal. But usually, I am not planning on stopping long enough to require an outfit change.
I am more concerned with the weather and riding when thinking of my clothes. To most people it is obvious I am riding if they care to pay attention. This often encourages people to be friendly and positive. Asking about my bike, travels and sharing their experiences. All things I enjoy, But for a few…. Recently while riding with my husband on his vacation we stopped at a steak house. Something I would never do alone but for his short time off we usually spoil ourselves with one restaurant a day. This was a nice restaurant
with great food and full of tourists in shorts and T-shirts. So, our biking gear was not anything to notice. A bad storm came up just as we sat down. Worried about the bikes as could see things flying past the window I got up to check. Just inside the door there was a lady on her phone. She looked me up and down slowly then made a not to be missed look of disgust. I was clean, dry (having just missed the storm) but in riding pants and tank top. It was in the high 90’s outside, so dressed for riding in the heat. I refrained from saying what was on my mind, not as easy as it sounds, and gave her a huge smile and said hi. I am happy to have people ignore me or be polite and I know
I should not let a random person’s reactions bother me, but it does. The disgust reaction is a new one and hopefully not something I will need to get used to. I felt better when a nice, friendly couple beside us started a conversation about motorcycles. A more normal reaction. The disgusted lady sat beside us both and I am sure her and her party were not impressed with our conversation with this lovely couple at the next table. In case you are wondering the disgusted lady is my age, very average looking and wearing a sun dress and a big hat, A dress I would never wear in my life, but I would never judge her on that. Horsepower Is Horsepower Sarah Jackman WRITER I went home to visit family and catch up with a few old friends. It was exactly what I needed, except for one problem. I didn’t get on a motorcycle the entire trip. I noticed it more than I expected. Every time I heard an engine, my head turned. Every time we drove somewhere, I caught myself looking at roads I’d rather be riding. I figured I’d survive a week without two wheels. Then I climbed onto Puzzle. It had been a few years since I’d been in an actual saddle, but the reins felt familiar. Being back on a real horse was good for my soul. We wandered around for a while, and I realized I hadn’t thought about my motorcycle in at least an hour.
My stepdad watched us for a bit, then pointed over at his tractor. He smiled and said, “Puzzle is one horsepower. That tractor is a whole lot more. It will get you anywhere, but not nearly as fast.” Of course I had to take it for a spin. I bounced around the property for a while, steering that big green machine across the dirt. It wasn’t fast, but I guess it didn’t need to be. I spent the afternoon creeping across fields, breathing fresh air, and grinning like an idiot every time I bounced over a rut. I climbed off the tractor and laughed because somehow, I had actually scratched the itch. By the time I headed back to California, I’d spent the week riding one horsepower and a whole lot of horsepower over and over.
My motorcycle is still my favorite. Don’t tell Puzzle…
But when options are limited… horsepower is horsepower.

People Ask What Motorcycles Do For My Mental Health Sarah Jackman WRITER
The truth is that they probably don’t do the same thing for me that they do for someone else. Everyone rides for their own reasons. Some people chase adrenaline, some love working on bikes or the friendships they’ve built along the way, and some just really like being on two wheels. For me, riding gave me my freedom back. Years ago, I was in an abusive relationship where I wasn’t allowed to just… go somewhere. When I left work, I went straight home. My location was checked every day to make sure I hadn’t made a detour without approval, and if I stopped somewhere or took a different route, there were questions about why. I’d ridden before. I rode dirt bikes a lot as a teenager
and had some fun rides with friends after I got my M1, but back then motorcycles were just something I enjoyed.
After I got out of that relationship, riding became something completely different.

I wanted to go, and nobody else got a say in it. I could take the long way home, turn down a road just because I’d never been down it before, stop somewhere for no reason at all, or keep riding until I felt like going home. I didn’t have to tell anyone where I’d been or explain why it took me so long to get there. That probably sounds ordinary to a lot of people, but to me, it wasn’t. Even now, there are days when life feels heavy. Work piles up, responsibilities don’t stop, and
sometimes old memories still find their way back. The motorcycle isn’t therapy, but it helps me remember what freedom feels like. After spending so long with someone deciding where I could go and questioning every stop I made, having something that will take me anywhere my mind and my heart want to go is really something. It doesn’t erase what happened. It just reminds me that I get to decide where I go now, and I don’t think I’ll ever take that for granted. That’s what motorcycles do for my mental health.
A motorcycle doesn’t give you hope. People do. Having a community that loves you and people you can reach out to when you need them does. There is absolutely nothing shameful about asking for help. Sometimes
reaching out is the strongest thing you can do. The motorcycle isn’t what saved me. It just helps me remember what freedom feels like.
