Welcome Message from the Conductor Thank you for joining us this evening at Northpoint Church for the first performance of the academic semester by the musicians of the California Baptist University Wind Ensemble, with our VERY special guests – the Woodcrest Christian High School Symphonic Winds and Wind Ensemble. On behalf of all of us at the Shelby and Ferne Collinsworth School of Performing Arts, welcome! We are honored to collaborate this evening with CBU School of Performing Arts alumni and WCHS Director of Bands, Mr. Jacob Valadez. Tonight’s performances will celebrate the great joys of music making, the bonds of community we form with one another throughout the music making process, and the special value of music education. God is doing wonderful things at WCHS and CBU! Tonight’s CBU Wind Ensemble performance, entitled “The Music of Japan,” is a celebration of Japanese culture through the unique lense of concert band music. Over the past five weeks, it has been such a joy for us to study compositions from several Japanese band composers, as well as Japanese-inspired compositions by American composers. The concert opens with Satoshi Yagisawa’s March Chagu-Chagu – a piece that communicates the vibrant cultural energy of the Japanese prefecture of Iwate and uses Chagu-Chagu-Umakko (horses with jingling bells) - a lovely Iwate folksong - as a motif. Next, we will perform a transcription of Gustav Holst’s powerful Japanese Suite. This piece contains several traditional Japanese folk tunes that were shared with Holst by famous Japanese dancer, Michio Ito. After the Holst, we will perform Yukiko Nishimura’s Star Ship – a work that is based on an traditional Japanese tale: Two of the most beautiful stars in the night sky are Altair, representing Man, and Vega, representing Woman. These two lovers can meet each other only one time each year, on the night of July 7th. Living on opposite sides of the Milky Way, they have to ride a ship to meet each other on that night. Next, we will play Chang Su Koh’s Arirang and Akatonbo, a piece that features two famous folk melodies – one Korean and one Japanese. Koh, who was born and grew up in Osaka, Japan, stated that “This work should serve as a bridge not only between Japanese society and Koreans living in Japan, but also between Japan and the Korean Peninsula.” This evening’s concert will conclude with three movements of Julie Giroux’s masterwork for winds, Bookmarks from Japan. This work is inspired by several famous Japanese paintings that were sent to the composer from a friend in the form of souvenir bookmarks. The movements performed tonight were inspired by "Fine Wind, Clear Morning" by Hokusai Katsushika, "Evening Snow at Kambara" by Hiroshige Ando, and "Market Bridge" by Hiroshige Ando. A special note of gratitude to our dean Dr. Joseph Bolin, our associate deans Dr. David Toledo and Dr. Gene Moon, director of academic operations Courtney Ladd and director of marketing Alex Stephens – both of whom have invested a significant amount of support to our ensemble this semester. In addition, we wish to extend our most sincere thanks to Justin McWhorter, technical director, and Lilliane Vargas, performance and events coordinator. These two work tirelessly to make sure every detail is taken care of at all events across the Shelby and Ferne Collinsworth School of Performing Arts. Finally, we also extend a warm thank you to Northpoint Church for hosting our concert tonight. The musicians and I are deeply grateful for your presence this evening and look forward to greeting you in person following the performance. -Brent Levine, conductor
