Grease: High School Version, is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc., a Concord

DIRECTOR’S LETTER

In a way, Grease is one of the hardest shows I’ve ever directed. It wasn’t the music or the dancing or the set or the endless snow days No, this showwasdifficultbecausethecharacters, theirmotivation, andtheshow’s messageare, inmyopinion, problematic.

Although we chose the high school version for a few reasons, I was taken aback by the messages present throughout this show. Eugene and Patty are mocked and bullied. The Greasers and Pink Ladies utilize peer pressuretogetwhattheywant.DannyandSandyshowcasethedichotomy of male/female expectations. Of course, we all know the ending where we all celebrate the fact that we change who we are to be with someone we wanttobewith.

With the language, “adult content,” innuendo, etc removed for the high school version, I was taken aback by what was left. I believe that this sends the message to our cast and audience that what remains is okay. It’s bad to have the Pink Ladies drink and smoke, but it’s okay to pressure Sandy to be something she’s not. I found myself struggling to direct these highschoolstudentstobehaveandactthisway.

To combat this feeling, I tried to spend equal time giving opposite messages. During rehearsal working with cast members I would say: “Ok, nowyourcharactershouldactlikeajerktothischaracterbecausethey’re trying to get everyone to laugh and to like them” Then, at the end of rehearsalwewouldtalkaboutit“…howimportantitistobeyourself? Why dowethinkpeopleactdifferentlydependingonwhotheyarewith?Where doyouseethishappeninginreallife?”

I know you might be reading and thinking, “come on Mr. O, it’s just Grease.” That’s where I will push back. Shows like this have become so ingrained in our culture that we overlook their messaging. Like it or not, many children (and adults) learn about society and culture through posts, reels, shows, and movies. None of us learned about “the real world” entirely through personal experience. Forgetting that and assuming that because we know better, others must know better is quite dangerous. I wasabletospendtimewiththecastandcrew, lettingthemdiscuss, learn, and share. While I do not get that opportunity with you, I do believe that thisshowcanstartthoseconversations.Ichallengeyou, yesyou, tohavea discussion with someone, anyone, after this show is over. Discuss the problematic ideals presented in this show Do you believe them now? Did you ever? If we want to make changes in our world, we have to be willing to start with ourselves, our assumptions and our preconceived notions. Discussionisagreatplacetostart.

Thankyouforreadingandthankyou,asalways,foryoursupport.

SYNOPSIS

After a whirlwind summer romance filled with sunshine and sweet promises, Danny Zuko and Sandy Dumbrowski assume they will never see each other again. But when Sandy unexpectedly enrolls at Rydell High for her senior year, they are suddenly back in each other’s lives, this time surrounded by classmates and cliques. At school, Danny works to protect his tough-guy image in front of his friends, while Sandy tries to find her place with the Pink Ladies. As rumors spread and reputations are tested, their once-simple summer love grows increasingly complicated. Throughout the year, Rydell High comes alive with sports try-outs, the voice of Vince Fontaine, and an exciting highstakes dance contest, all against a backdrop of shifting friendships and budding romance. As graduation approaches, Danny and Sandy must decide whether their connection can withstand the pressures around them and determine who they truly want to be.
