The 2014 version of the Cauliflower Alley Club’s annual Banquet and Reunion is almost upon us. It’s going to be one hell of a good time for all who trek to the Gold Coast Hotel and Casino this year!

Anyone who has ever attended a CAC reunion will be familiar with what the event has to offer. Besides rubbing elbows with elite wrestlers from the last several decades, there will be three days of outstanding camaraderie sprinkled with a liberal dose of one-of-a-kind attractions that exist only in the CAC.

There’s the nostalgia room, where often rare and always high-quality items are available for sale, and where you can catch up with old friends you may not have seen since the previous year’s reunion. There’s the CAC seminars, where those who have accomplished great things in the At last year’s Baloney Blowout, CAC President Nick Bockwinkel wrestling business share their knowledge addresses the members of the club (photo by Scott Romer) and experience with us all. There’s the bowling and cribbage tournaments, which provide CAC members the opportunity to engage their competitive urges without having to take a beating in a wrestling ring. There will be special attractions, like live radio broadcasts, rare paintings from a past legend of the ring, Lord Carlton. Then there’s the wrestling show that always features a winning combination of the best up-andcoming independent talent in the land and some of the biggest established names the business has to offer. And of course, you can’t forget the great honorees who will grace the stage at both the Baloney Blowout on Tuesday night and the Banquet on Wednesday night (turn the page for a complete list of honorees, and don’t be shocked if there are some surprises thrown into the mix!).

COMPLETE AWARD HONOREES FOR THE 2014 CAC REUNION

With the reunion just around the corner, here’s a recap of the honorees for the event. These esteemed wrestlers and humanitarians have truly earned their place in the annals of CAC lore!

The Lou Thesz Award – MICHAEL “P.S.” HAYES

In the 80’s and 90’s, no heel raised the ire of wrestling fans more than this year’s Lou Thesz Award winner, Michael “P.S.” Hayes, the leader of the legendary tag team trio The Fabulous Freebirds.

As a top guy in the Mid-South, Georgia, the World Class Championship Wrestling territory in Texas, World Championship Wrestling on WTBS and everywhere else he went, Michael Hayes set the standard for excitement in the ring and dynamism on the microphone. His personal charisma was such that his very presence brought an immediate jolt of electricity and excitement into any situation with which he was involved.

It brings great pleasure to the Cauliflower Alley Club to present the prestigious Lou Thesz Award to such a giant of the wrestling industry, who has accomplished so much as a wrestler and also as a booker and TV Michael Hayes producer with WWE. Congratulations to the great Michael Hayes!

The “Iron Mike” Mazurki Award – TERRY TAYLOR

The 2014 “Iron Mike” Mazurki Award goes to a man who has literally done it all in the wrestling business, Terry Taylor.

Taylor was one of the best and most consistent in-ring workers of his era, having great matches not only with those who, like him, were excellent ring performers but also, when the circumstances called for it, with those who weren’t. And when his days as an active performer ended, he transitioned seamlessly into an administrative role, helping to create some of the most memorable angles of the past 20 years while working for TNA and WWE. The CAC salutes the amazing accomplishments of Terry Taylor!

“I’m really excited about coming to the CAC this year,” Taylor told Ear editor Eric Chmiel. “It’s going to be a great experience. I’m going to enjoy having the opportunity to meet with and learn about so many of the Terry Taylor quality people who are involved with the club.”

The Women’s (Active) Wrestling Award – “CHEERLEADER” MELISSA ANDERSON

The CAC presents the Women’s (Active) Wrestling Award for 2014 to one of the most gifted ring veterans around, Cheerleader Melissa Anderson.

Melissa has worked all over North America and all over the world, enjoying success everywhere she’s gone, including having a fine stint in TNA. Honored last year by Pro Wrestling Illustrated, the most prestigious newsstand wrestling magazine, as the top female talent in wrestling, she is a former CAC “Future Legend Award” winner and has held the top title for the women’s promotion “Shimmer,” the premier North American ladies wrestling league. The CAC can’t wait to present Melissa with her award!

“It’s going to be a great event,” said Melissa. “I always look forward to Vegas for the reunion every year, but this time it’s going to be extra Cheerleader Melissa special for me, to be honored by such a great organization. It will be a (pic by Cheerleader Melissa) night to remember.”

The Men’s (Active) Wrestling Award – ADAM PEARCE

Adam Pearce will receive the 2014 CAC Men’s (Active) Wrestling Award at this year’s reunion, and he richly deserves it.

The consummate pro in the ring, Pearce has done more than anyone to return the NWA World title to its former glory, capturing the belt five times and touring the globe with it, much like his wrestling forefathers did. He’s worn many hats, including star in TNA, trainer, video game motion capture specialist for WWE, and film maker. The CAC looks forward to celebrating Pearce’s distinguished career in Las Vegas this year.

Said Pearce, “It’s an incredible honor to be recognized by the CAC. I'm fond of saying I've always cherished the respect of my peers above and beyond any praise or recognition that has ever come my way over the years. To be honored in this way by the CAC is tantamount to the biggest Adam Pearce batch of peer respect I can imagine. I am so proud to accept this award."

The Men’s (Active) Wrestling Award –DAN “Short Sleeve” SAMPSON

Dan “Short Sleeve” Sampson has had one of the most successful careers in wrestling of any little person over the past 20 years. So it’s no surprise that he’s getting the 2014 CAC Men’s (Active) Wrestling Award.

A veteran of both TNA and WWE, as well as Hulk Hogan’s TruTV series “Micro Championship Wrestling,” Sampson has definitely made his mark on the business during the decade-and-a-half he’s been in the ring. In recent years, he’s parlayed his success in wrestling into taking a stab at acting, having appeared in a pair of recent films.

Short Sleeve is very much looking forward to being honored this year. “I am so honored to be awarded this year's CAC Men's Wrestling Award,” he tells The Ear. “This business is a roller coaster ride, but to be recognized like this by my peers is not only humbling, it makes me feel blessed. I love Short Sleeve Sampson this business!”

The Special Trainer’s Award – RON HUTCHISON

Ron Hutchison has been one of the most accomplished trainers of top ring talent over the past two decades. The CAC is presenting him with a much deserved special “Trainer’s Award” to recognize this fact.

Though Hutchison was quite a hand himself during his days in the squared circle, his greatest success has come training some of the greats of the modern era. You know them all: Edge, Christian, Trish, Gail Kim and many more. Now, the CAC will give Hutchison his due for the outstanding work he’s done in keeping our business stocked with top-flight talent.

“Thank you to all who have helped me and given me the opportunity to be afforded this great honor,” Hutchison told The Ear. “Thanks also to the CAC Board of Directors for finding me worthy. And, thanks to all of my students, male and female, whose hard work and success is reflected in Ron Hutchison my being chosen to receive this award. I humbly accept this accolade and (pic by Ron Hutchison) dedicate it to all legitimate professional wrestling trainers everywhere.”

The Women’s (Retired) Wrestling Award – DEBBIE THE KILLER TOMATO

The Cauliflower Alley Club Women’s (Retired) Wrestling Award for 2014 goes to Debi Pelletier, who fans of the business know by her unforgettable ring name Debbie the Killer Tomato.

Pelletier started under unassuming circumstances as a fill-in on a show at the Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles in 1983. She was so good in her new profession, she eventually found herself wrestling all over the country. She feuded with Sherri Martel over the AWA ladies title, was featured on the old Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling TV program as a Dallas Cowboys’ cheerleader character and even toured the rings of the Far East. The CAC is proud to honor this outstanding member of the business!

As Debi put it, “I’ve been involved with the CAC going back to when the reunions were held at the Spaghetti Factory. I’m so happy to be getting Debi Pelletier this award. I dedicate it to the love of my life, Joy York, who we all miss (pic by of Debi Pelletier ) so much. He opened the door for me to the CAC.”

The Men’s (Retired) Wrestling Award –BUDDHA KHAN

Buddha Khan

He was a wrestling star across the U.S., but he’s also done more things in more walks of life than perhaps anyone the CAC has ever honored. He is Buddha Khan, the 2014 CAC Men’s (Retired) Wrestling Award winner.

Khan worked for the CAC’s own Karl Lauer when Karl promoted California, and he’s also worked for Verne Gagne’s AWA and the L.A. office run by another CAC staple, longtime member Judo Gene LeBell. But he’s also starred on the roller derby circuit, hosted his own radio show, been an associate of Muhammad Ali, accepted the Medal of Honor from a U.S. President on behalf of his father, been an accomplished singer who has appeared on many records, acted in films with Denzel Washington and Dirk Benedict, and worked on WWE TV. Congratulations to Buddha Khan on a very well-deserved Men’s (Retired) Wrestling Award!

“It’s really nice to be recognized,” says Khan. “It means a lot. I’m looking (pic by Buddha Khan) forward to seeing everyone this year.”

The Jason Sanderson Humanitarian Award – SEAN “Massive Damage” DUNSTER

Though the CAC could just as easily have honored Massive Damage the wrestler, the club chose instead to honor Sean Dunster the man, for his tireless efforts to combat teen drug use. Sean Dunster is the 2014 Jason Sanderson Humanitarian Award winner.

Dunster has given enormous amounts of his own time doing charity work on behalf of the “Fight For Life” program, addressing Western Canadian youth and encouraging them to avoid drugs. His numerous classroom and children’s hospital visits have touched many lives in a positive way over the past several years. Without a doubt, Dunster has excelled as a human being every bit as much as he has excelled in the ring. The CAC couldn’t be happier to recognize such a quality person.

As Dunster told The Ear, “It is deeply humbling to be honored with the Sean Dunster Sanderson Humanitarian awar d. I love my yearly visits to the CAC, getting (pic by Sean Dunster) to pick the brains of so many legends who wrestled my coach Leo Burke, like Terry Funk, Nick Bockwinkel and Harley Race, to name a few.

The Red

Bastien Friendship

Award – JOHN ARTHUR LOWE

The CAC presents the Red Bastien Friendship Award to John Arthur Lowe for his outstanding contributions to the welfare of the wrestling industry and the men and women who work in it.

Lowe has been diagnosed with Hepatitis C. As such, he has worked tirelessly to prevent others in the industry from being victimized by this awful disease. He has educated those in the business about Hepatitis, and about why people who make their living in a wrestling ring are particularly susceptible to it. He has endeavored to make knowledge of CPR and first aid as widespread as possible throughout pro wrestling’s ranks, and to see to it that trained EMTs are present at as many wrestling shows as possible.

Lowe also has an impressive creative side, having penned over thirty full-length plays, and he’s also appeared as an extra in several films.

Other 2014 Cauliflower Alley Club Awards

The CAC will also bestow two other top honors at the 2014 reunion: the Golden Ear Award (won last year by David Cantu) and the Future Legend Award (won last year by Bobby Sharp). The winners of these awards will not be revealed until the awards are actually presented in Vegas. And be ready, CAC members, because there may be other surprises at the awards presentations as well!

REMEMBRANCES OF REUNIONS PAST

Well, the 49th year CAC banquet is upon us. In just days, we will all attend our annual family reunion at the Gold Coast Casino in Las Vegas!

The honorees this year stand as a who’s who of the business and they all deserve recognition by the Cauliflower Alley Club for the contributions they’ve made to this wonderful sport we all love, professional wrestling. For 49 years, the CAC has considered our events to be reunions. They have never, ever been a convention! It’s a reunion of the boys, the girls and the truly dedicated wrestling fans. Yes, wrestling has changed a heck of a lot over the years. That’s for sure. But when we come together at the annual reunion, we all share one thing in common: a true passion for this business. It’s a bond that non-wrestling people just don’t “get.” The Vegas event is a time when we can sit with our fellow CAC’ers and enjoy old road stories, and try to decide if what we’re hearing is a rib or a shoot. It’s three days for all of our members to leave their worries at home and just enjoy the event—and the people who attend it—for what and who they really are.

As many of our members have been attending this event for several years now, the bonds of friendship have grown for each and every one of us. With all the social media avenues that are available, we can all keep in touch throughout the year. But that’s all we can do....keep in touch. However, in Vegas with the CAC, we do all the things that you, I or anyone else cannot do with social media: we get those yearly hugs, and look in the eyes of friends and tell them, “It’s good to see you!” That is why I often say, ”You can’t make old friends.” I personally cherish the friendships I’ve gained through my years of being involved with the CAC’s annual reunions, and I look forward to making many more!

If you have never been to a reunion, then I ask you this: Why not? No one can really describe the times we all have there. It’s one of those rare moments in life that you just have to live to understand. Once you come to a reunion, I am sure that like so many of us, you will return year after year.

All the Board members have worked throughout the year to make the 2014 event the best it can be. I really believe that every one of you has been a valuable asset to this gr and organization. As Karl Lauer says, “The CAC must have done something right to have been around for 49 years!”

If you ask a group of people, ”How many seasons are there in a year?”, most would tell you it’s four. But I say five: Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and the CAC Reunion! And that fifth season is the time of the year I look forward to more than any other. This year, we all deserve to be able to enjoy some relaxation in the great weather that Las Vegas has to offer, especially after the winter we’ve all had to suffer through!

From the bottom of my heart, I wish you all safe and easy travels to Vegas this year. As Wednesday night rolls around and the reunion comes to an end, I know you will take home with you the same electric excitement that you arrived with. I hope the memories you make will be shared with other club members in the years to come, as you continue to support this great organization.

PREVIEW OF THE 2014 CAC REUNION

All the things we enjoy so much about the annual Cauliflower Alley Club reunion will be featured at this year’s event. From top to bottom, this will be another great week to add to the club’s ever-growing collection. From cribbage to the nostalgia room to live wrestling, it’s all here—and then some! Below is a preview of some of the events you’ll experience at the Gold Coast in June.

THE NOSTALGIA ROOM –“HUB” OF THE CAC REUNION

Some people refer to it as “The Nostalgia Room.” Others prefer “The Hospitality Room.” Still others cut right to the point and call it exactly what it is, “The Big Room Upstairs.” However one chooses to refer to the giant space in the upper levels of the Gold Coast, where the CAC sets up shop each year, one thing is certain: this is the main artery of the CAC reunions, the “hub” of all reunion-related activity.

The nostalgia room is where you can meet your heroes of the business for a chat, or catch up with an old buddy to reminisce about days gone by. It’s where you’ll go to get the official CAC badge that gives you unfettered access to all the free activities and goodies at the event, and where you can sign up for the annual bowling and cribbage tournaments. In the case of the cribbage tournament, it’s where the actual competition takes place. And it’s where some of the most unusual events occur, like in 2012 when this year’s Jason Sanderson Humanitarian Award winner Sean “Massive Damage” Dunster married his sweetheart, fellow CAC staple Tanya Lavigne (aka Sexy Samantha) in a full-on wedding ceremony officiated by—ironically enough—Jason Sanderson! You never know what awaits in the nostalgia room, where the atmosphere is always festive and literally anything can happen.

Nonetheless, if your ailing heart isn’t strong enough to handle that kind of excitement, there are many quieter joys to be found in the Big Room Upstairs.

The highlight of these displays are the huge walls of historical photos featuring some of the biggest names in the history of the business, which festoon the entire area. You might even run into Sgt. Slaughter, J.J. Dillon or Jim Ross having a peak at the pics, if you happen to be there at the right time of the day.

And then there’s the merchandise dealers, who have many one-of-a-kind, rare or just plain cool items up for sale at reasonable prices. You’ll be able to buy goods from such vendors as Scott Hosey’s Power Play Sportscards, Bill Anderson (great to see Bill back at the reunion this year, see the article on his amazing book elsewhere in this issue), Eric Caidin, Jake Alexander, Pat Laprade (make sure you get the book he and Bertrand Hebert have penned on the history of wrestling in Montreal), Andrea the Giant (she’s always a standout on the annual wrestling shows at the reunion), Charlie Smith and Bobby Simmons (they have another great reunion t-shirt design for this year, proceeds from these sales go straight to the CAC, so be sure to pick up a shirt) and the great Butcher Vachon (his books are among the most enjoyable wrestling tomes you’ll ever read). There’s no way you won’t find something you like among the wares of this incredible group.

So come to the Nostalgia Room, find a great book or photo, meet one of your wrestling heroes, shoot the bull with some old friends and just generally have a great time. Everyone is looking forward to seeing you there.

NOT ONE BUT TWO WRESTLING SHOWS AT THIS YEAR’S REUNION

The festivities start even earlier at the CAC banquet and reunion this year, as Billy Blade has outdone himself by adding a second wrestling show to the schedule for 2014! The regular Monday night show is still on for June 2nd, but there will also be a Sunday show this year on the evening of June 1st, kicking off the reunion a few hours earlier than usual. Blade’s outstanding Vendetta Pro Wrestling will again team up with three other awesome independent leagues (Traditional Championship Wrestling, Gold Rush Pro Wrestling and All Pro Wrestling) to present a double dose of “Casino Royale 2014.” Both evenings of great live action have a 6pm bell time at the banquet hall across from the nostalgia room. Like last year, admission is free to anyone, but those with CAC reunion badges get priority seats. It’s not too late to email Vendetta Pro Wrestling at vpwrestling@aol.com to ask about a booking on these shows. However, every worker on these shows MUST be a current CAC member in good standing with the club, as well as have a ticket to the banquet, no exceptions.

JAPANESE GREAT SATOSHI KOJIMA HEADED TO VEGAS

Satoshi Kojima has been one of the biggest stars in Japanese pro wrestling over the past 20 years. Now, the CAC is proud to announce that Kojima is coming to this year’s CAC reunion!

Kojima has twice held the New Japan IWGP World championship and is also a two-time All Japan Triple Crown World title holder. Those two belts are the top singles championships going back decades in Japan, and Kojima’s four total reigns are the equivalent of a current American wrestler holding the WWE title and TNA title twice each during his career. Kojima has also been an IWGP World tag champion six times, and has held the All Japan Unified World tag title on three occasions. He is also the current NWA World champion. That is the title that 2014 CAC award honoree Adam Pearce has proudly held five times en route to helping the championship regain some of its past luster.

Al Friend has been in charge of the annual CAC Destroyer cribbage tournament for many years now, and his presence as the tournament organizer has become synonymous with the event itself.

But those days are coming to an end this year.

Citing health issues, Friend has decided to turn the reigns over to another longtime tournament veteran, 2012 CAC cribbage champion Riki Ataki. Riki is a veteran of the business, having worked all over the west coast and for Verne Gagne’s old AWA during his time in the ring. Now, at this June’s reunion, he will man the cribbage sign-up sheet in the nostalgia room. Ataki will also be collecting the $20 entry fee (proceeds go to the CAC) and setting up the bracketing that determines which players will meet in the first round.

“I’m really honored that the CAC is looking to me to run the tournament this year,” Ataki told The Ear. “It’s going to be a great event, as it always is, with plenty of good competition and no holds barred cribbage play. But I have to warn everyone: although I was not able to be present to defend my 2012 cribbage title last year, this year I’m going to be in it to win it, even as I’m running the thing. other players better look out!”

While Friend will no longer be organizing the cribbage play at this year’s reunion, it’s expected that he, a former champion himself, will be ready for battle, along with several other past champions including Paul “Butcher” Vachon, Bill White, Dave Bodell, last year’s winner Andrew Carmichael, 2012 and 2013 runner-up Tim Pulkrabek, perpetual top challenger J.J, Dillon and of course the Destroyer, in whose honor the tournament is named. KEN RAMEY BOWLING TOURNAMENT SET TO ROLL DESPITE ABSENCE OF MAURIELLO

The cribbage tournament isn’t the only annual CAC event that will see new blood in charge in 2014. CAC members are used to having longtime bowling organizer Joe Mauriello at the helm, but unfortuantely Joe will be missing this year’s reunion due to his work as a police officier.

“ I wish I could make it, I really do,” says Mauriello, who has been the organizer of the event since its inception in 2010. “But due to my work schedule, it just wasn’t possible this year. But I guarantee, I will be back for the 50th reunion and I’ll be ready to resume my role as the head of The state-of-the-art bowling facilities at the Gold Coast the Ramey bolwing event. And those capable hands belong to the interim tandem of bowling tournament organizers for 2014, Patsy Hughes and Emily Miller. These two have been with the CAC for years now, and will be stationed with the bowling sign-up sheet near the CAC t-shirt table run by Charlie Smith and Bobby Simmons, right by the check-in area as you enter the nostalgia room. You can sign up with Patsy and Emily anytime on Monday or Tuesday morning or afternoon, or on Wednesday prior to noon. This year’s bowling spectacular runs from noon to 3pm on Wednesday at the state-of-the-art bowling center upstairs at the Gold Coast. A $20 entry fee will be required, with all proceeds going to the CAC.

The bowling championship is completely up for grabs this year as last year’s winner (Joe Mauriello) won’t be in the mix. Look for last year’s runner-ups Jeff Walton and Destiny Hamblin to be strong contenders. And if you’re a really bad bowler, don’t worry: the last place finisher who bowls the worst of all gets their $20 entry fee back! Whether you’re a pro or you’ve never bowled before in your life, you might just wind up bowling beside one of the CAC’s many star wrestlers. In recent years, such luminaries as Ross Hart, Akio Sato and 2014 CAC award honoree Adam Pearce have rolled a few balls in this annual tournament, which continues to get bigger with each passing year.

GREAT SEMINAR SCHEDULE SLATED FOR REUNION

Thanks to seminar guru Bob Leonard, the CAC has yet another great slate of seminars ready to go for this year’s reunion. As always, the seminars are free to all CAC members and their guests. All that’s required to attend is your reunion badge, which is available at the check-in desk in the nostalgia room for all who have bought tickets to the Baloney Blowout and Banquet. Each seminar lasts about an hour and affords time for audience questions. Whether you’re a wrestler, referee, manager, promoter, publicist or anyone else actively involved in the creation of wrestling events, you’ll take away some new insights and valuable guidance from these one-of-a-kind sessions with the best and brightest minds in the wrestling business. This year, we’ve got seminars on independent promoting, selling yourself outside of wrestling, using social media to its full benefit, and handling the successes and pitfalls of wrestling, all presented by a wide range of people who have excelled in the business.

Sunny, aka Tammy Sytch, the “original diva” of WWE, has lived through the highs and lows of the wrestling life, working everywhere from small local shows to the mega-promotions. She’ll share her views on the do’s and don’ts of surviving in wrestling, speaking in terms that not only apply to female workers but also the men. Now in the midst of writing her autobiography, Tammy will have her entire career at front of mind, and her take on so many facets of her life in the ring will be more than fascinating to hear. PWI senior editor Dan Murphy will moderate what should be a lively question and answer session.

There’s also three independent promoters extraordinaire in Jesse Hernandez of California (who received a special promoters award from the CAC last year), Boston’s Dan Mirade and Oregon’s Jeff Manning. They will combine their limitless experiences in the promoting game to talk about successful strategies for running wrestling shows, and how to avoid the problems that have sunk more than one “indy” promotion over the years. Everyone involved in promoting pro wrestling at any level, all the way down to those who hang the show posters, will benefit from hearing about the many ingredients that go into a great show and how each of them can contribute to drawing a full house.

Tammy Sytch, aka Sunny, will present Another great seminar event will feature Canadian indy a major seminar at the 2014 CAC reunion standout Vance Nevada, who faced a major problem in transitioning from wrestling to the “real world” when he retired a year ago. Writing “wrestler” on his resumé communicated nothing of value to prospective employers; he couldn’t even get a job interview. Vance then amended his resumé to reflect what he’d learned in wrestling, rather than what he’d done in wrestling. Within weeks, he was fielding job offers from several companies. Vance will tell you how he did it, along with how to land a great job when you’re wrestling on weekends but need meaningful employment during the rest of the week.

Yet another top-flight seminar features A.J. Kirsch, who is among a select few in wrestling to truly maximize the benefits of social media to push his career. A BA in Communications, he’s hands-on with Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram, among others, using them to enhance his image and opportunities. A.J. will discuss how you can do the same as a wrestler, manager, promoter or publicist to grab and hold the attention of your audience.

OTHER THINGS GOING ON AT THE REUNION

As if all the stuff listed on the previous pages isn’t enough, there are some other events that will be taking place at the reunion this year.

With all the various happenings on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday during the day (and this year, even on Sunday night), don’t forget the two centerpiece events of the reunion: the Baloney Blowout on Tuesday night and the Banquet on Wednesday night. Both events take place upstairs at the Gold Coast in the banquet hall across from the nostalgia room. With your ticket fee for each event, you’ll be treated to a fine meal both nights, and then you’ll witness the awards presentations. With better food and better deserts than ever (thank you to Morgan Dollar!), and an overall shorter duration for the Baloney Blowout than in past years, you’re going to enjoy a top-notch spectacle two nights in a row. Arda Ocal will handle the hosting duties at the Blowout while J.J. Dillon will return as host of the Banquet. J.J. is looking forward to working once again with a certain former NWA champion from Texas who has co-hosted with J.J. in past years!

Michael McCurdy (who is about to publish an encyclopedia on World Class Championship Wrestling, which looks awesome) and David Fuller are the hosts of a Wednesday night internet radio show on blogtalkradio.com. Not only do they have a CAC reunion special on May 28th, but McCurdy will actually be doing live broadcasts of their show from the nostalgia room on both Tuesday June 3rd and Wednesday June 4th, all while David joins him live via satellite hookup from Ft. Worth, Texas. The shows in the nostalgia room go live at 7pm Eastern time and will feature live interviews and various reunion news. You should check out their regular show live at 9pm Eastern time at www.blogtalkradio.com/ihweradio. Or, you can hear their shows on demand anytime you want at that URL.

There’s also the annual belt raffle. This year’s belt again was created by Dave Millican, Rico Mann & Reggie Parks, all master belt makers and longtime CAC members. You Rico Mann, Dave Millican and Reggie Parks can buy raffle tickets in the nostalgia room or at either display their great belt that the CAC raffled off the Baloney Blowout or the Banquet. And, a lot of people are excited about Lord Carlton’s daughter bringing some of Carlton’s paintings to display at the reunion. There are several CAC stalwarts who were contemporary with Carlton, like CAC President Nick Bockwinkel and the Destroyer, who look forward to seeing the works in person.

---With the reunion coming up, I’ve been thinking about how many of the greatest announcers in our industry have attended a CAC event, or even served on our Board of Directors. We're blessed that the legendary Jim Ross has been attending each year. Everyone would love to see and hear JR back on weekly TV where he belongs. His predecessor Gordon Solie served for years on the board in the 90’s. Additionally, Solie talked up the CAC to his one-time WTBS broadcast partner Roddy Piper, who has since gone on to attend numerous CAC events. Others who've contributed behind the mic and have been with us for least one reunion include Vince McMahon Jr., Judo Gene LeBell, Jeff Walton, the late Miguel Alonso, Roy Shire, Jimmy Lennon Sr., Les Thatcher, Jim Cornette, Paul Heyman, Taz, Mick Foley, Bobby Heenan, Mike Tenay, Verne and Greg Gagne, Bill Harris, Mike Graham, John Laurenaitis (at our lone Tampa reunion), Alfred Hayes, Bill Cardille and of course Kansas City legend Bill Kersten. Bill gave a memorable podium speech a couple years ago in accepting a special announcer’s honor.

Verne Gagne, as well as with old pals like Reggie Parks, John Tolos, Lou Thesz, Larry Hennig, Danny Hodge, Penny Banner and Gene LeBell. He had a lot of fond memories recalling his time in Honolulu working for Ed Francis, having perhaps the greatest style clash match in modern times working with Fred Blassie for the Ring Magazine Gold Belt (Hawaii's top title). As they wrestled, Terry Funk, The Sheik, Gene Kiniski, Ripper Collins, Johnny Barend and others were transfixed backstage peaking through the curtain.

---WWE Star Glen "Kane" Jacobs gave a nice CAC plug in inducting our Bill Moody into the WWE Hall Of Fame this past April. DDP and Jim Ross were also great publicists for CAC with DDP inducting Jake Roberts for us in Vegas last year. DDP's Yoga and attention to detail in helping

MEET MICHAEL McCURDY

When pressed for an answer, many Cauliflower Alley Club members could probably give you an interesting perspective on their days as a fan of pro wrestling that’s unique from all others. While some may have taken the extra step and become active members of the business, the CAC also has those who have remained steadfast in their fandom, and supported the industry through acts of generosity and kindness toward its working weary. With a membership that has been built from CAC’s inception in 1965, you’re able to hear the territorial-based backgrounds of many of our senior members.

Of the latter variety—the ones who have remained fans— many have their roots based in the timeframe of the close of the territory days. One such CAC devotee is Michael McCurdy, who plans to soon release The Encyclopedia of WCCW, a reference book of photos and highlights of the wrestlers who plied their trade in the Von Erichs’ World Class Championship Wrestling company in Texas between 1982 and 1990.

McCurdy, a longtime resident of Northern California, is a case study of an unlikely author to write about a promotion based in Texas. But he offers this perspective as to why he chose to take on the project. “Around 1986, the only wrestling I got to see in Northern California was the WWF shows once a month, and their TV programs, and then the Saturday night airing of World Championship Wrestling on WTBS,” McCurdy says. “But then our cable company added ESPN, and I began seeing Legends of World Class Championship Wrestling, with shows going back to the early 80s. I recognized Jimmy Garvin, who had been one of my favorites. I saw him face Chris Adams, and I wondered ‘Who is this guy?’ It really got my attention.”

Indeed, the World Class brand of professional wrestling broke new ground in terms of television production and out-of-the-ring character development. “The first thing I remember them showing was Garvin doing the ‘Slave of the Day’ vignette with David Von Erich at his ranch, with Jimmy and Sunshine washing the dog,” McCurdy recalls. “I’ve heard James Beard, who refereed in Texas during that time, describe World Class as something like Camelot, a mystical place of sorts, where the battles were like fairy tales. For a lot of fans, it was what they lived for. Even today there’s still a group of people…they are the Von Erich nation. They don’t want you to talk bad about their heroes, because they are like gods to them. I was told by Johnny Mantell, who was active in Texas during that time, that people call him to this day to talk about those times. Texas wrestling was such a big part of their lives that they don’t want to let it go. This whole culture fascinates me.”

That fascination led McCurdy to join the CAC in 2006. “That year was the first time I attended a reunion in Vegas,” McCurdy said. “I felt a little out of place as I saw guys I grew up watching like Nick Bockwinkel and Harley Race. But as I met them and grew to know them better, I learned that I was among friends, people who were glad to see me and shared my passion for professional wrestling.”

Starting in 2009, McCurdy’s interest in The Encyclopedia of WCCW project began to move forward. “Once I became a life member, it opened so many doors for me to meet and talk with people. I wanted to know more about who worked for WCCW and who helped to build it up,” McCurdy said. “Through great researchers like Tom Burke, Scott Teal and Greg Oliver, I built a list of people to feature in the book. The bios of the bigger names will be full-page, like The Freebirds and Von Erichs, and some will have photos included. I wanted a highlight bio for each person, like the 1980’s style trading card. I’m hoping that the facts I list for some guys will make even a diehard fan say ‘I didn’t know that.’”

With the World Class index totaling over 400 names, McCurdy remains committed to doing the project justice. “It covers everybody; if they worked there, they’ll be in it," McCurdy said. "World Class is still alive. There are a lot of people who are still serious about it. One of the great honors I’ve had is I get to meet and talk to the people I’m writing about. They look at me as more than a fan. It’s amazing.”

A longtime refereeing and promoting veteran of the business and a CAC member since 2003, Jeff Sharkey has studied from wrestling's legendary learning trees, and hope s to pass that knowledge along to the next generation.

TWO OUTSTANDING PHOTO BOOKS BY CAC MEMBERS

Dave Burzynski and Bill Anderson, two longtime Cauliflower Alley Club members, have something very notable in common: both of these veterans of the business have recently produced excellent wrestling photo books. In both cases, their latest works serve as sequels to previous outstanding publications they’ve produced. We guarantee, you will not find a more exciting pair of books with more images that are sure to get any wrestling enthusiast’s blood pumping.

Dave Burzynski is a longtime disciple of the Detroit wrestling scene going back to its glory days, when men like The Sheik, Bobo Brazil and Lord Athol Layton prowled the city’s famed Cobo Arena. The number of unforgettable shots from the 1970s in Dave’s newest creation, “This Saturday Night II,” is staggering. The book, like its predecessor, has a cavalcade of images from the legendary Cobo, many of them candid ones taken backstage. Before he became a wrestling manager who often was in the corner of The Sheik himself, Dave had unprecedented access to the wrestlers in Detroit as the ringside photographer for the official program of the Detroit territory, Body Press. Thus, you’ll find beautiful pics here of performers as diverse as Tony Marino, Pampero Firpo and Tex McKenzie. Still, the real stars of the show here may be the sweaty, heated pictures from inside the Cobo ring, where the blood flowed freely and the action was often utterly out of control. An equally amazing achievement in wrestling photography is “Bill Anderson Remembers….His Fallen Friends of Wrestling.” This is an introspective 178-page tour de force honoring some of Bill’s personal friends in wrestling who, sadly, are no longer with us. This book is as expertly photographed as it is touching. It features an unforgettable and moving foreward by “Superstar” Billy Graham. There are numerous bios, as well as Bill’s own personal memories about many of the fallen workers featured within the book’s pages.

Any wrestling fan will enjoy the terrific shots Bill took of WWF 1980’s era stars like Randy Savage and Big Bossman, as well as the older candid photos going back to guys like Fred Blassie, the Crusher and the CAC’s own late President Red Bastien. You’ll also find excellent pics of Bill with various celebrities who have been big fans of the business over the years.

Bill was able to take the many great photos in this book simply because he’s done so much in the business, from wrestling to training to working for WWE both as talent and as a referee. NEWS FROM AROUND THE CAULIFLOWER ALLEY CLUB

Thanks to his wild partying ways and his unapologetic embrace of (ahem) “unusual” substances, outrageous Toronto Mayor Rob Ford is not just the most famous mayor in the world, thanks to every late night comedian under the sun poking fun at him. He’s also a big fan of the Cauliflower Alley Club, and in particular one of our 2014 CAC award honorees, Toronto’s own Ron Hutchison, who will receive a special trainer’s award (richly deserved) at this year’s reunion. Mayor Ford recently took a moment to greet Ron and pose with him for the picture to the right. Soon after, the top man in Toronto politics even sent Ron a congratulatory note on his CAC award—written on the official letterhead of the Mayor’s office and hand-signed by the Mayor himself! Folks, it does not get much better than that! Maybe next year Ford can come to the CAC reunion for a beer drinking contest with Hutchison!

Actually, it’s been a banner 2014 for Hutchison so far, as Rob Ford is not the only noted person who has shown him the love. On her website, former WWE Divas champion and Hutchison trainee Trish Stratus wrote a tremendous, very Ron Hutchison and Rob Ford, potential heartfelt recognition of Hutchison’s unquestioned talents as a tag team champions of the world trainer of great wrestlers, saying, “I couldn't be happier for (photo courtesy of Ron Hutchison) Ron for receiving this honor. From day one, Ron treated me with respect as a female in the ring, but also never took it easy on me. I was always treated as one of the boys and that's what made me stronger and toughened me up for the professional ring. I'll forever be thankful to him for giving me the foundation on which I built my career. I left the nest ready for the big leagues! Congratulations Ron, I can't think of a more deserving trainer for this recognition." Trish was just inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame at Wr estlemania weekend in April, and she again sang Ron’s praises, this time right in the middle of her Hall of Fame acceptance speech. The woman is a class act, and for that matter so is Ron Hutchison.

The CAC’s sister organization “The Gulf Coast Wrestlers Reunion” held its own annual reunion in Alabama in March, and reports are it was a heck of an event. There were many on hand with longtime ties to the CAC, including Cowboy Bob Kelly, our own banquet coordinator Morgan Dollar (who gave a killer speech that caused some tears to be shed in presenting a posthumous award to the great Johnny Weaver, accepted by Johnny’s daughter Wendi), Brian Blair, 2008 CAC Men’s Wrestling Award recipient Ronnie “Man With The Hands Of Stone” Garvin, cribbage champs Al Friend and Bill White, Todd Thompson, the irrepressible Scott Teal, Peggy Latham, Danny Hodge and so many others. Good to see Ken Lucas and Ranger Ross make appearances too. A big fat cigar goes out to 2013 Men’s Wrestling Award winner Edge, aka Adam Copeland, and his Significant Other Beth Phoenix on the recent birth of their first child, a baby girl. The pair made quite a splash at last year’s Las Vegas reunion, with Jim Ross giving a great speech in presenting Edge with his award. We’re sure it won’t be long before Ron Hutchison is training the bouncing baby girl for the ring!

Also just wanted to mention that the “Remembrances of Reunions Past” photo in the last issue, showing Sputnik Monroe, Charlie Smith and others, was taken by Mike Lano, a fact that was accidentally omitted from the caption. Thanks for all of your great photos, Mike!
