A redneck rebel, two Tongan tough guys, the World’s Strongest Man, and a World champion from the Double Cross Ranch were among the award winners at the 54th annual Cauliflower Alley Club Reunion at the Gold Coast Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
As usual, the awards were given over the course of two nights, at the “Bockwinkel Blowout” (formerly “The Baloney Blowout”) informal dinner on Tuesday, April 30, and at the suit-and-tie attire banquet on Wednesday, May 1.
J.J. Dillon* served as the master of ceremonies of the Bockwinkel Blowout, assisted by SLAM! Wrestling producer Greg Oliver*. Larry Matysik, “The Voice of St Louis Wrestling” and respected wrestling writer and historian, was awarded the Posthumous Award in recognition of his contributions to wrestling over the past five decades. Matysik died on November 25, 2018, at the age of 72. Matysik was introduced by Herb Simmons*, who revealed Matysik had been working on two wrestling books when he died. Simmons presented the Posthumous Award to his widow, Pat*. “He loved everybody who loved wrestling,” Pat said. “He never considered himself anything but a fan.”
Tony Vellano* received the Art Abrams* Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by Dillon. Vellano, the founder of the Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame (currently located in Wichita Falls, Texas, but originally based in Upstate New York) talked about how he and George “The Animal” Steele* had discussed the idea of creating a hall of fame for professional wrestling and see the concept through to fruition. Vellano said one of his most memorable moments was when an emotional Killer Kowalski* first laid eyes on his exhibit and proudly remarked “This will make sure people remember Walter Kowalski.”
Newsletter editor Mike Rodgers* (founder of the influential Ring Around the Northwest newsletter) received the James C. Melby* Historian Award, presented by George Schire* who called Rodgers “a most deserving historian.” “I’ve been to a lot of Cauliflower Alleys … and I never imagined I would be up here,” Rodgers said. “We want to remember everything that we appreciate. We want it to be remembered so the next generation… they don’t have to start over. I like to say it’s a puzzle that will never be finished, but we’ve got the outline.”
The first-ever CAC Promoter Award was awarded to Los Angeles matchmaker Jeff Walton*, who was introduced by Terry Brodt. In addition to being an integral part of the L.A. booking office up until the early 1980s, he also worked as wrestling manager Tux Newman in Tennessee and wrote the book “Richmond 9-5171: A Wrestling Story.”
The Trainer’s Award was presented to Cody Hawk* by his most famous protégé, Dean Ambrose* (aka Jon Moxley) who would make his surprise debut in All Elite Wrestling four weeks later.
Moxley began training under Hawk at the age of 15 at the Heartland Wrestling Association in Ohio. He said he was Hawk’s “science experiment” and that Hawk helped him make his pro wrestling dream a reality.
“Cody treated me with respect. More importantly, he took me seriously,” Moxley said. “Cody didn’t just show me the path. He walked the path with me.”
Hawk said he wrestled more than 3,500 matches during his career, including prelim bouts in both WCW and WWE. “I signed up to be a wrestler. I never set out to be a trainer. It just sort of happened,” he said.
Hawk also had a hand in training Eli Drake, Jeremiah Crane, and Shawna Reed*, among many others.
The final award presented during the Bockwinkel* Blowout went to Scrappy McGowan* who received the Charlie Smith* Referee Award, presented by Bobby Simmons*. Known for his energetic ring presence and his shaggy blonde head of hair, McGowan was a fixture in the Gulf Coast and with Jim Crockett Promotions into the 1980s.
Jim Ross* took over the emcee duties for the May 1 awards banquet. Ross opened the banquet with an entreaty for all attendees to bring new CAC attendees next year so the organization can continue to grow, an entreaty he made several times throughout the evening.
Prior to the awards ceremony, a moving video tribute was presented in honor of longtime CAC member Dick “The Destroyer” Beyer*, who passed away on March 7. Beyer’s widow, Wilma*, and children Kurt* (who won the annual Dick Beyer Cribbage Tournament earlier in the day) and Kris thanked the fans and the CAC for the outpouring of support and well-wishes they received following Beyer’s passing.
“This is the best business to grow up in, and this is my family,” Kris said.
The first of three Men’s Wrestling awards was presented by Kevin Sullivan* to “The Reinforcer” Andrew Anderson*. Anderson praised Sullivan as a mentor, along with Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka and Greg “The Hammer” Valentine*. “I’ve never been an indy darling … I’ve always been me,” said the veteran wrestler and actor.
The Women’s Wrestling award went to two-time NWA women’s champion “Bambi” Selina Majors* and was presented by Nigel Sherrod* along with Malia Hosaka* and Joyce Grable*. “I’m more nervous right now than I was in my very first match against Joyce Grable,” Majors said. A self-professed “country girl from Georgia,” Majors said wrestling saved her life and allowed her to live her out her fantasies.
“If you have a dream, don’t give up on it because it can happen,” she said. “I thank God and I thank wrestling.”
Ironically, two wrestlers who rarely received the opportunity to speak throughout their careers delivered one of the longest and most memorable speeches of the evening as Haku and The Barbarian received the 2019 Tag Team award. The award was presented by Tyrus, formerly known as Brodus Clay in WWE.
Both Haku and Barbarian found their way into pro wrestling after careers in sumo failed to materialize. They both had successful careers in both singles and tag team competition, including stints in the WWF and WCW. “They captured the American dream, these two immigrants,” Tyrus said, stressing how both men valued family and loyalty throughout their personal and professional lives.
Barbarian recalled his days of wrestling for a hot dog and a $20 payout early in his career and thanked his trainer Red Bastien* and all the wrestlers who came before him for “paving the way” for those who followed. Haku spoke about the responsibility he felt to represent God and the Isle of Tonga every time he stepped inside the ring.
In an unannounced moment, CAC President Brian Blair* made announced that James “Kamala” Harris* was the recipient of this year’s Courage Award. Harris, who had both his legs amputated due to complications from diabetes, has been struggling with health and financial issues in recent years, and he expressed his gratitude to the Cauliflower Alley Club in an emotional video presentation.
“For 30 plus years, I never received an award like this. This means a lot to me,” Harris said. “I may have lost my legs, but nothing can keep me down, because people are pulling for me, praying for me, supporting me in so many wonderful ways, and I thank you. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
Former WWE competitor Rico Constantino also praised the CAC, noting that he had received financial aid from the organization to cover unexpected medical costs. “We are a family here,” he said. “The CAC came to me in my time of need,” he said.

took the podium next as “Dr. D” David Schultz received a Men’s Wrestling award presented by historian John Cosper*, who helped write Schultz’ memoirs, Don’t Call Me Fake: The Real Story of “Dr. D” David Schultz.
“I may be the only man ever to lose his job trying to protect the business,” Schultz said, in reference to the infamous moment in 1984 when he slapped 20/20 report John Stossel in the head after Stossel called wrestling fake.
Schultz said the wrestling industry turned his back on him after he was fired by Vince McMahon* and blacklisted from wrestling, but that he managed to survive on his own as a successful bounty hunter. “I survived. I made it,” he said. He also made some parting shots at Steve Austin, teasing a match against “Stone Cold,” and the “big-headed crybaby” Hulk Hogan, one of Schultz’ top in-ring rivals.
CAC Executive Vice President Scott Teal* presented a Men’s Wrestling award to Nick Kozak*. Kozak talked about breaking into the business in British Columbia in 1956 and facing Lou Thesz* just two years into his pro career. “He made me look like a champion,” Kozak said. “I spent 35 years (wrestling). If I could, I’d add another 35.”
“If you asked me, ‘Nick, would you do it again?’ In a heartbeat. In a heartbeat. That’s how much I loved it.”
The Lou Thesz Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Dory Funk Jr. by Nick Aldis, the reigning NWA heavyweight champion. Ross noted that Funk was the perfect recipient of an award named after Thesz.
“If anybody embodies Lou Thesz, it’s got to be Dory Funk Jr.,” Ross said. “Smooth as silk.”
Aldis said he had respected Funk’s work for years and was stunned when Funk told him he was familiar with, and appreciated, Aldis’ work as well. “He is one of the most admired and respected champions in the history of the business,” Aldis said. “Dory Funk Jr. has been holding the door open (for younger talent) for years.”
Funk thanked the fans for their support of himself and of wrestling and said he hoped that Billy Corgan succeeds in bringing the NWA title back to the prominence it once enjoyed. He also said that Thesz was one of his

trainers and credited Thesz for teaching him the double wristlock, but he was unable to find a willing volunteer who would allow him to hook in the move at the podium.
The final award of the evening was the Iron Mike Mazurki* award which was awarded to “The World’s Strongest Man” Mark Henry. The award was presented by Henry’s former Nation of Domination teammate, D-Lo Brown.
Ross remembered seeing footage of “this 400-pound kid” slam-dunk a basketball when he was Vice President of Talent Relations for WWE and knew he had to get him signed. “I saw magic in this kid,” Ross said. “He loved the business. He cared. And by God Almighty, he was a hell of an athlete.”
“He’s the kind of guy who would give you the shirt of his back, and if you didn’t take it, he’d knock you out and put it on you,” Brown cracked. “He’s the kind of guy you hope you can be.”
Henry became emotional when he remembered his grandmother taking him to wrestling shows as a child. “I was meant to be a wrestler,” he said. He tried to stifle his emotions but admitted that “my emotions make me strong” and that he always felt more powerful when he was emotional.
Henry talked about the pioneers of wrestling, including Black Sam, a slave who wrestled in the 1800s, and 1940s star “Black Panther” Jim Mitchell. He said he spent countless hours practicing throwing worked punches at a shower curtain to try to practice his craft and improve, and how to make sure he was protecting his opponent at all times.
He also thanked the wrestlers in attendance for “defending our business in the time of kayfabe,” and made special note of Kevin Sullivan, saying “I was so scared of Kevin Sullivan as a kid.”
Henry also urged CAC members to recruit more and to donate what they could to help the organization going forward, and pledged $1,000 himself to help the cause.
“The Cauliflower Alley Club is designed so we can all live forever,” he said. “We all we got.”
Kurt Beyer is the 2019 Cribbage Champion!
Troy Peterson beat Chad Olson in two straight falls. The winner faced Mike Chisholm in the first round. Chisholm won in three falls to move on. Kurt Beyer lost the first fall but won the next two including a count first in the second that propelled him to a strong third fall. Tim Dalton took two straight falls from Cody TKO Smith making his debut in the tournament. Kurt’s sister Chris was not as fortunate as Steve Gallatt won two straight as Ron Hutchison tried to bring in a ringer to take the tourney. Kurt Beyer then took control with a solid two falls manhandling of Tim Dalton. Mike Chisholm faced a challenge from Steve G and came up short in his debut with a three fall loss to Steve which relegated him to a losers bracket. The four then met to see the placing of the competitors on Wednesday morning. Mike Chisholm then beat Tim Dalton to capture third place in his debut. Tim wasn’t able to capture the cards and lost in two falls. Then it was on as Steve Gallatt being Ron Hutchison’s ringer faced Kurt Beyer returning to support the family honor with the passing of Dick “The Destroyer” Beyer. Beyer took to Steve hard and waltzed through the first fall and then shocked Steve with a strong second fall performance. Kurt wins the tournament after stumbling in the first games and the taking it on strong.
