V8U Ranch 55th Annual Red Angus Bull Sale – Fort Macleod, AB
MARCH 21
SATURDAY 1PM 2026 SOUTHERN ALBERTA LIVESTOCK EXCHANGE
We sincerely welcome you to the 55th Annual V8U Ranch Bull Sale!
What an exciting time to be a cow-calf producer. We extend our congratulations to our fellow producers as we were able to market cattle at record prices in 2025. This achievement reflects the dedication and resilience of you and your families. Even amid more affordable protein alternatives, consumers continue to demonstrate strong demand for high-quality beef.
The fundamentals remain firmly in place for sustained “good times” in the cow-calf sector for the foreseeable future. It is an especially exciting time for Red Angus. Across Western Canada, Red Angus females and females bred to Red Angus bulls were frequent sale toppers. Red Angus genetics continue to be a powerful hedge - maximizing profitability even during unprecedented strong markets. Red Angus genetics are the answer as the industry looks to grow the herd.
We welcome you to the 55th Annual V8U Ranch Bull Sale and sincerely thank all of our customers who have purchased bulls from us over the years. We are also grateful to everyone who participated and attended our historic 2025 sale. Few moments in our professional lives compare to the feeling we experienced following last year’s event. We are truly honored to have supplied bulls to your operations. We remain committed to providing genetics that deliver the convenience traits required for success in a demanding environment, while still balancing the performance and carcass quality needed to meet market demands.
We are extremely proud of this year’s offering. The bulls are as uniform as any group we have produced and have progressed exceptionally well through development. This marks our fifth year feeding bulls

at home, a program that continues to demonstrate measurable benefits. These bulls are developed to be durable breeding athletes, built for longevity and multiple breeding seasons. We want to ensure that their most productive years begin once they enter your program—not on short-term conditioning for sale day appearance.
The bulls receive no creep feed, and feet are not trimmed. They are raised together throughout the summer as a single group and, since weaning, have been developed in one large contemporary group with no preferential treatment for individuals requiring extra attention. This approach allows for a more accurate evaluation of performance and structure, making true genetic outliers readily identifiable.
After more than six decades of continuous improvement, we feel our cow herd has reached a level we have long been striving toward. Structure, foot quality and udder development are at the point where we’ve been trying to get to. We are pleased with their conception rates and fleshing ability, particularly as they calve during the winter months of February and March and are bred back in late April before the grass greens up.
With the exception of a few embryo calves, all breeding is conducted using live cover in multi-sire breeding groups. You can be confident that every bull in the sale is sired by a bull that has physically settled cows in real-world conditions.
This is a no-nonsense, traditional bull sale. Bulls will walk through the ring as they have every year since the first sale at the Fort Macleod Auction Market. Ideally it would be great if you could view the bulls in person; however, if you are unable to attend, please contact us or our trusted sale staff directly to discuss the offering. The sale will be hosted live with internet bidding available via DLMS. We do not video the bulls.
Please join us on Saturday March 21st at 1:00pm in Fort Macleod. Coffee & Donuts will be served throughout the morning with a complimentary hot lunch provided prior to the sale.
We look forward to visiting with you and sincerely appreciate your continued support of the V8U Ranch program. Feel free to contact Jade, Steve or our sale staff with any questions.

EXPLANATION OF EPD TERMS
EPD = Expected Progeny Differences
They are another tool used to select a bull and are predictions on how each bull rates against his own contemporary group and the rest of the breed. EPD Averages for all Red Angus calves born in 2025 (these are the averages to compare the Red Angus bulls in this catalogue to):
This value predicts the difference in avg. birth weight of a bull’s calves compared to breed averages.
Indicates the ability of a sire’s calves to grow from birth to weaning (expressed in pounds).
Growth from birth to yearling (expressed in pounds)
A reflection of the milking ability of a bull’s daughters. It compares the difference in gain between birth to weaning of a bull’s daughter’s calves compared to the calves from daughters of other sires evaluated.
the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first calf heifers.
Expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Expressed in lbs, this EPD predicts differences in the average hot carcass weight in progeny.
A prediction of future progeny’s performance for carcass marbling scores.
Expressed in inches, predicts the comparative depth of back fat over the 12th rib in the average calf.
We have moved to a 4-star calving ease rating. Four ratings are used for the bulls calving ease expectations. The more stars the more confident we are that they can be used on Heifers.
ACTUAL WEIGHTS
Actual sale weights will be taken March 18 and posted along with scrotal measurements and sale order available in printed form and online on DLMS on sale day.

Frontier is a calving ease bull that we had used on our heifers for the first two seasons we owned him. To date his sons average 74lbs at birth yet still perform with a 100-weaning ratio. He proves that you can have calving ease yet still maintain performance. We have moved him up to be used on the mature cows to continue to build heifer bulls that you’ll want to retain daughters from. We are calving his third set of daughters this year and have a great deal of confidence for him to be a cow maker. Frontier produces moderate front pasture type females with tidy udders that have plenty of milk. With this upcoming season being his 6th breeding season, he has proven to be tremendously sound and athletic. He really excels at covering the basics which the entire industry could really use right now.

Anthem is a Bull that we purchased in 2022. We purchased Anthem to add some growth and muscle. He sires some of the growthiest, thick bodied calves on the place and does this consistently. The sons are easy to find with added muscle shape and power. In 2024 two Anthem sons managed to break two sale records. An Anthem son sired some head turning progeny in the seedstock world this past fall that were highly sought after.

He currently ranks in the top 2% for his WW EPD & 5% for YW. He has proven to be a potent breeder with his ability to be the sire of some of our larger sire groups in multi sire breeding. His is the largest sire group in this year’s sale. His sons have an average BW of 80lbs with a 102- Weaning Ratio.

He demonstrated aggressive breeding behavior and tremendous conception on our heifers for his first two breeding seasons. He seems to be really sound footed and has an eye appealing profile. We’re expecting big things out of this young up and coming sire.

We found Foreman on a tour through some really good Red Angus herds in Montana in 2024. He quickly made it through our selection criteria covering all the bases including structure, a shaggy dark red hair coat and eye appeal. He had the added benefit of a total outcross pedigree. He has sired a really nice set of sons in this year’s offering. Unfortunately, we lost this young sire way too soon last winter. This will be the only set of calves to be sired by Foreman. We had really high expectations out of this young sire. This set of calves cause us to miss him even more.

We were looking for a sire to use to flush to our good 18D cow who had a done a few big things in her career. After seeing quite a number of progeny we settled on Coming In Hot. We really like how he can maintain structural integrity and improve foot quality while keeping hide colour real dark. He offers added performance while keeping birth weight in check. In this year’s sale we have 3 full ET siblings that we are really proud of. Make sure to search them out.
An in-Dam purchase from the Yarrow Creek Ranch Dispersal. His maternal brother was the high selling lot in the same dispersal. We don’t often purchase many cows, but felt that 138K would be a nice addition as we were really high on the Crackerjack daughters. We are pleased with our purchase after seeing lot 100 develop. CE:

An Anthem son out of a cow who’s been around for awhile now. Tradin Right in this pedigree did a lot of things right around here leaving some outstanding cows who were easy fleshing. Take note of the Marbling EPD if you’re trying to improve carcass quality.
Tremendous cow power behind this bull. He is a maternal brother to our good 2G cow who set a sale record a couple years ago with a Bull she raised sired by Anthem. 2G struck again last year with another really good Anthem son selling. 9E herself goes back to a real good cow we purchased at the Shoderee Ranch dispersal some years back who was in production for 13 years.
This is a bull that should build you a cow herd with the combination of Frontier on a Tradin Right daughter. 1D is just getting warmed up at 10 years of age with 3 daughters producing in the herd. A daughter of hers is one of our favorites who is calving in the heifer bunch this year. 1D is very closely related to the 12D cow who is the dam of lot 102.
This is another in Dam purchase from the Yarrow Creek dispersal. The Crackerjack daughters have done a lot of things right which caused us to seek them out. The 83H cow had raised a bull calf and a bred heifer who had both sold in last year’s dispersal.
My oh my look what we have here. A Foreman son who checks all the boxes. First of all, he’s out of a Bourne Daughter which we couldn’t ever have too many Bourne daughters. Next he goes back to 23F who raised a real popular bull in last years sale and was the grandmother to a big deal the year before. Oh yeah 13N is in the pedigree who is a premier dam with 38 progeny. Then we get to the EPD’s where he excels at most of them. He tops it off with a dark red hide colour and tremendous eye appeal. Did we mention that he has an outcross pedigree? If you’re looking for calving ease and want to keep some of the best females around look out for 105.

This would be a really unique pedigree to most Canadian Red Angus herds. Here is a soggy made, kind of a bull with added performance and large testicle size. A really nice first effort out of a heifer.
If a pleasant disposition is on your checklist make sure to search out 112. He inherited his docility from the bottom side of his pedigree. Both his dam and grandam are amongst some of the most docile cows on the ranch. The Tradin Right bull left us some fabulous daughters. The 44B cow is an Elite Dam who has generations of either Elite or Premier Dams on the top and bottom side of her pedigree. 44B just had her 11th natural calf this year and is heading for our Embryo Transfer program. 44B has a direct son selling as lot 117. If you’re looking to keep some replacements 112 should be on your short list.
A great option to breed to your heifers for a trouble-free calving season and to ensure calf survival during the good times in the cattle market. We sure have enjoyed calving our own heifers bred to the Admiral bull. Whether you plan to breed heifers to keep yourself or maintain a strong reputation in bred heifers for sale it is hard to go wrong with 113.
Another good selection to safely start the productive years of your heifers to keep them in the herd for a long time. 12G who is the granddam of 114 raised our high selling bull in 2023 to Lust Farms where he has done an outstanding job for them.
Here is another candidate to use on your heifers. His young dam has begun her career really strong raising a bull that sold in last years sale to an outfit that only picks from the top. This year she sends another one that was actually born a couple weeks earlier than the one before. This is exactly what we’re striving for with these young cows. There is a ton of longevity in this cow family. The granddam 25C is still in production at age 11. The great granddam 14A is also still producing at age 13 - 14A’s mother stuck around until she was 14. I could go on but I think you get the picture.
We talked about the 44B cow on lot 112. She’s done it again raising a bull that could be used on heifers, wean off some whoppers, and give you an opportunity to keep every daughter. The combination of Frontier and 44B will give you some flawless replacement heifers who will outlive the barbed wire that contains them. 44B is an Elite Dam, her mother 16Z was Premier, as was her mother 2U. These classifications are determined by the Canadian Angus Association.

The true value of liquid nitrogen right here. The sire of this Bull Red Mac Cap 62F, was born in 1996. That’s right these are 30-year-old genetics. Cap saw heavy use in the late 90’s & early 2000’s. We flushed our good 18D a couple of times and thought that she was a good candidate to incorporate Cap. If there is a cow family on the ranch that will consistently have 10 or 12 calves in their lifetime they likely trace back to Cap. We have talked about 18D throughout the catalogue as she has 3 other sons in this year’s sale in lot #119, 139, & 154. We are calving more recipient cows with the Cap x 18D mating this calving season.
The dam of this bull 58F raised a bull a few years back that went to breed heifers in a program who sells front end bred heifers each fall. 58F has some cows on both the top and bottom side of her pedigree who produced for a very long time with her granddam 13U producing until she was 12 and being designated and Elite Dam by the Canadian Angus Association.
One of just a few Bowie sons in the sale. We really liked to Bowie bull but unfortunately didn’t get to use him much as he got injured early in his career. Good cow family here. Another full ET sibling to lot #’s 119, & 154 and a maternal brother to 134. You can’t go wrong with this mating. We don’t flush many cows so you can be assured that when we do, they have jumped through all the hoops.
A real safe bet for to use on your heifers. With the current market conditions, it’s never been more important to have a live calf to sell in the fall. Furthermore, getting a heifer to re-breed after her first calf makes economic sense. You can count on 140 to ensure an easy calving to have a live calf in the fall, and you won’t mess up your heifers by yanking a big monster out of them either.

We would like to offer special recognition to
DARREN SHAW
The Admiral bull has consistently sired calving ease sons so you can be sure that it is bred right in. This is the first set of calves we have out of him and he was used exclusively on our heifers. The dam of this bull made a good first effort. She has a strong maternal background with 13N as her granddam. We have talked about 13N over the years as she has had a major influence on our herd. She would be the foundation of the largest cow family on the entire ranch.
Darren has been working with the Mackenzie family as a ring man for our sale since 2003. Darren is directing his focus to a successful business he has built with his family. We express our sincere gratitude to Darren for working with us on one of our most important days of the year for the last 22 years. Darren is a class act and we wish him the all the best on his future endeavors.
Special thank you to
KOLE NEILSON
Kole has helped us on our biggest days even before he was old enough to drive since 2010. He is a top hand that we can always count on when we really need him. Even on the days that he isn’t directly helping us he is always watching out for V8U cattle and takes action if he sees anything out of sorts. He has started a young family and we are really happy for him.
Take a look at the EPD’s. This is a really balanced set with no extremes on any trait. Individuals like this don’t come around every day. He offers plenty of calving ease still with above average performance.

The Frontier sired calves offer calving ease and they stay relatively moderate so you can get away using them on your heifers for a few years. Frontier also makes some tremendous daughters so you may be tempted to use a bull like this on your cows for a few years to build some moderate replacements.
A lower BW bull with added performance. His EPD’s also show that he should really help improve carcass quality also. Take note of his WW, YW, & Marbling EPD’s.

The dam of lot 111 is a maternal sister to this bull. Their mother 44H is a younger cow who is working her way up the ranks. Out of her first 4 calves she has put two daughters in the replacement pen and this will be her second bull to go through the sale. She raised a full brother to 148 as a heifer that went to an outfit where they pursue only the good ones.
We talk about the Rosebud cow family often with this bull once again going back to our good old 13N cow back a couple generations in the pedigree. Take special note of the WW, & YW EPD’s. This bull should sire some heifers to put in the replacement pen and some steers that will hit the scale with a thud in the fall.
Here is a calving ease specialist that you can make rapid genetic improvement by breeding him to the newest genetics in your herd, your heifers. Hard to come up with any more female making sires in a pedigree. Frontier is building tremendous cows, the New Era bull left us with some outstanding daughters, and then you have Fusion in there who is one of the most notable sires in the entire breed. On the dam side you have 13F who raised a herd bull that we used in Merlin 133H. The dam of 13F is 18D who has four ET sons in this year’s sale in lot 119, 134, 139, & 154. A full brother to 150 sold in last years sale where the new owner is really pleased with the conception on his heifers.

Another Credence son with a notable set of WW, YW, & Marbling EPD’s. The dam of 151 has raised some real good bulls that have sold in previous sales. She also has some real good cows on both the top and bottom side of her pedigree. The Credence bull can sure add some style and eye appeal to the calves he sires.
This bull was born a twin to a heifer calf. Take note of his calving ease EPD. A good candidate to use on the heifers. Also has a fairly descent marbling EPD.
This is another full ET sibling to lot #’s 119, 139, & a maternal sibling to 134. We like this bull quite a bit. The biggest question is which of these brothers do you like? They are alike in so many ways.
These Anthem sons have so much muscle and thickness. It’s no wonder that they have typically found themselves selling near the top of the sale the last couple of years. They are a really rugged sire group. 13J is just getting warmed up in her production record, but her mother 9U produced on the ranch until she was 13.
A bull with calving ease with a fairly balanced set of numbers behind him. The Tradin Right sire on the dam side has really done some great things for our cowherd.

BLACK HIDED RED GENE CARRIER - This is about as much of an outcross pedigree as you could find for any black hided bull. Take special note of his marbling EPD as well as the WW, &, YW. We are particularly critical when we decide to put these black bulls in the sale. They need to jump through a few more hoops to find a place on the truck to Fort Macleod.

This bull shares the style and eye appeal of his sire. This is another good candidate to consider retaining daughters out. They will be ultra fancy and based on the dam side should be around for a long time. 14K is in the early stages of her career, but she put a daughter in the replacement pen last year as a heifer and then raised this handsome devil for the bull sale. The dam of 14K is 14A who is still in production at 13 years of age. The dam of 14A was 35U who produced until she was 14.
RED MAC FRONTIER 164N
A straight Canadian Pedigree with some punch in the performance department. Take note of his WW & YW EPD’s.
Moderate at birth with an EPD profile indicating that he will sire calves with growth and will improve carcass quality. His dam is a young Bourne daughter who hit a home run last year raising a bull that sold in the sale to regular customer who seeks out only the best ones. There are some really good cows backing 42K. She goes back a few generations to 35U who we talked about on lot 162. If you’re looking to build some red cows 168 would be a good start as he will improve fertility and milk production.

Here is a bull with a whole bunch of growth bred in. He weaned off heavy and his EPD’s tell a tale that you can expect the calves that he sires may create the need to hire another truck in the fall. You’ll forget all about the added freight costs when the sale cheque arrives. His dam 46D has done a whale of a job raising 4 bulls who sold near the top of the sale in prior years and two daughters in the replacement pen. The dam of 46D is 44B who is an Elite dam still in production and raised lot 117 in this year’s sale.
Straight Canadian Pedigree on this bull. He is a real soggy made individual with a powerful hip and added depth of body. His young mother placed her first calf in our replacement heifer group last year. 51K goes back to 41D who raised our high selling bull in 2022.
BLACK HIDED RED GENE CARRIER - A younger bull with some added punch in an eye appealing package. We were really disappointed that the Bowie sire got injured so early in his career as we were really excited in the great things he had in store. There are just a few Bowie sired calves.

The youngest bull in the offering, but don’t overlook him. He had the heaviest adjusted 205-day weight of the entire offering. His dam is a bull producing machine with this being the fifth bull she has raised to make it into the bull sale. The dam of 5D is 1Z who raised a black hided bull that was the high seller in our 2015 sale. That bull can still stimulate a conversation with the owners when Frank Jenkins is around.
GENOMICS TESTING EXPLAINED
Costs have risen dramatically in the cow-calf industry over the last several years. A cow only has one chance each year to raise a calf. We utilize Genomic testing as a risk management tool. We ourselves have put great emphasis into EPD’s to support buying decisions, and have gone one step further by investing in Genomic testing in all our retained Bull and Heifer calves since 2015. This is an investment that we have made to improve the accuracy of the EPD’s within our herd. With Genomically enhanced EPD’s we can have much more confidence in what to expect from the progeny that a sire will produce. This also gives you as a buyer, more reliable information which in turn gives you more control and aids to reduce disappointment. With several generations of data collected, visual evaluation although still very important cannot be the only trait used to select one of the most important purchase decisions in a cow calf operation. We suspect that we are not alone in saying that we have at times invested in cattle that appeared to be superior, but just didn’t turn out as expected. With the use of Genomically Enhanced EPD’s disappointment is minimized.
Normally when EPD’s are calculated, there is a calculation made based on the production of the sire and the dam. Although the resulting progeny share parentage these animals are not identical. If the sire and the dam were the same for two calves born in the same year the resulting EPD’s of those two calves would be identical until they begin to produce progeny of their own. With genomic testing we get predictions from the animal’s DNA which will either increase or decrease an EPD value based on the genetic makeup. This does not artificially improve the actual EPD value, but instead improves the accuracy. An animal that undergoes Genomic testing has as much potential to have their EPD’s negatively impacted as they do to have a positive response. We have had on multiple occasions where two full siblings could be as different as one being a calving ease sire with another being a cow bull with added performance. Genomically enhanced EPD’s help us identify these individuals before they sire any calves. For example, Lot #’s 119, 139, & 154 are full siblings through embryo transfer. Normally their EPD’s would be identical, however because we have utilized this technology you can see variance between them. Depending on the trait, the EPD value printed in our catalogue would have similar accuracy to each bull selling having sired approximately 20 calves before ever breeding a cow. This obviously doesn’t tell us the whole picture, but does certainly offer more confidence than a bull who has not undergone this testing.
Cattle are purchased every day based on visual appraisal alone. Wouldn’t it be nice to have more information when selecting a pen of replacement heifer calves with data to show that they will milk, or have improved fertility over other individuals? It would also be ideal to purchase a pen of feeder cattle and have data to show that their performance, or grading potential is above average. Unfortunately, these are tools that are not readily available as a rule. We are extremely fortunate to have this resource available in the seedstock business and we feel it is to our advantage to utilize it ourselves and provide the information to you to help improve confidence in your purchase decisions.
A big advantage of V8U Ranch incorporating Genomic testing is that parentage verification is included. Every bull available on sale day has been “Sire Verified”. Better yet, all bulls raised by cows who were born since 2015 have been “Parent Verified”. This means that they have been confirmed by DNA as being progeny of both the sire and the dam. This gives us confidence that the cattle that we raise and sell are exactly what we say they are.
If you have any questions about EPD’s or Genomic testing please give Steve a call and he would be happy to answer your questions.
