Sunrise Ranching Company 27th Annual Production Sale - Brooks, AB

Page 1

It is our absolute honour and pleasure to welcome you our 27th Annual Angus Production Sale. What a historic time to be in the cattle industry. I would like to start by thanking you for the confidence you have shown in our breeding program. We are a family totally committed to our cattle and building the long-lasting friendships that come along with dealing with wonderful cattle people. We want the Sunrise brand to be a reliable source for your Angus genetics and someone you can trust to help your business thrive.

It is with your continued support that our herd has continued to flourish and in return, hopefully yours as well. With that responsibility comes our unwavering commitment to breeding the type of cattle that continue to move our industry forward. The cattle market is changing rapidly, and quality cattle are finally getting paid what they’re worth, so having the right genetics in place is going to put you in an awfully good spot. We are anticipating these prices to hold as there is just not enough cattle around. This is why we have strived to select and breed cattle that meet our criteria for structural integrity, performance, fertility and docility, while meeting the carcass demands of our end consumer with a quality, tender, highly marbled carcass. We strive to breed cattle that will build your reputation and make you proud of the cattle you offer. We feel that our sale offers bulls that get better every year, with this year being the best yet. Every animal in this sale has been genetically tested with Angus HD to help you select your next herd sire with the most accurate data available. The goals of our bull program have never changed having them continually tested for feed efficiency and performance and being able to thrive in any environment. With this in mind, the management of our cow herd has changed making an even more genetically superior cow. The cows are no longer fed through the winter. We now calve a bit later forcing the cows to nurse their calves into December. They go from grazing grass to swath or bale grazing in the couple cold months and then back to grass in the spring. They are made to calve on their own, cycle back quickly and raise an above average calf. Cattle that need to be propped up in any of these qualities do not last. It’s with this management that will take our bulls to the next level, raising cattle that are highly fertile and thrive anywhere while raising quality calves that gain quickly and efficiently. We feel that if you want to market yourself as a maternal cowherd then quit taking the maternal out of the cow.

We would truly like to thank the Tateson and Morasch families for managing the sale offering with the same care as if we were doing it ourselves. They have been very easy to work with in understanding how I would like these bulls fed and cared for.

I would also like to thank my family, Logan and Madi for their hard work and devotion to our program and especially my wife Shauna for her unwavering support in the new journey our family is on. They have definitely made it easier through this transition, and we’ve had a bit of fun along the way.

As always, we love to talk cattle any time so stop by for a coffee/whiskey or to look at the bulls anytime, and please stick around after the sale for snacks, refreshments and for a visit.

RANCHING CO.

WHOLE HERD HEALTH

THERE ARE 5 KEY COMPONENTS TO THE HEALTH AND MANAGEMENT PROGRAM:

1. Nutrition

2. Animal Care and Welfare

3. Disease Prevention

4. Breeding Soundness

5. Tracking Sale Bull Progeny Performance

BULL AND HEIFER NUTRITION

All pre-weaned calves are raised on mama’s milk and lush green grass. No supplemental creep is needed or provided. After weaning they are introduced to a fibrous total mixed ration comprised of chopped hay and silage ration, and an all-natural vitamin supplement. This diet is more than adequate for maintaining growth and performance and superior for rumen, hoof and reproductive health.

ANIMAL CARE AND WELFARE

All the animals (not just the cattle) at Sunrise Ranching Company are managed and handled with the utmost of care. The cattle are comingled in small groups in large spacious paddocks that have 360 degree wind protection and a large amount of slope so that there is always a dry area to stand or lay down. Straw bedding is abundant and always fresh. Cattle are always handled with ease, but when necessary (in the event of injury or lameness) an analgesic medication (Meloxican) is administered to help lessen the pain.

DISEASE PREVENTION

Sunrise Ranching Company follows a detailed vaccination program to help ensure that the cattle stay healthy and continue to thirve on the farm and carry this forward onto their new homes. Below is a list of the antigens vaccinated against and the associated product names used. Calves are vaccinated in the spring prior to pasture turnout with the following:

» IBR/P13/BRSV (MLV) - Inforce 3® (intransal)

» Long Range Injectable Ivomec

» BVD (MLV) and Mannhaemia hemolytica - One Shot® BVD

» 7 way Clostridial and Histophilus Somnus - Ultrabac® 7/Somnubac®

Calves are vaccinated at weaning with the following:

» IBR/P13/BRSV/BVD (MLV) and Mannhaemia - Bovi-Shield® GOLD One Shot®

» 7 way Clostridial and Histophilus Somnus - Ultrabac® 7/Somnubac®

» Parasite Control - Ivermectin in fall

BREEDING SOUNDNESS EXAMINATION

Every bull for sale will have been evaluated for the following criteria:

» Physical Examination

» Soundness of structure and movement

» Palpate testis, epididymis and internal sex glands

» Scrotal Circumference

» Minimum requirements must be met or no further evaluation is performed

» Examination of the Penis

» Verify each bull can protrude and there are no warts or defects of the penis

» Sperm Motility and Morphology

» Verify sufficient gross and individual motility and sperm morphology

The bull must pass all the above criteria to be considered a satisfactory breeder. If the bull passes all of the above criteria, but falls just below the minimum threshold for sperm morphology (70%), he is considered to be a “decision deferred” breeder. Approximately 40% of all bulls will fail to produce an adequate semen sample at 11 mo. of age, 30% at 12 mo., 5% at 16 mo. This classification of bulls means that they are either prepubertal or stressed, but are showing sufficient signs of improvement and will likely be satisfactory soon when the days get longer and the grass is greener. Any Decision Deferred bulls offered for sale will be announced at sale time and none of these bulls will be delivered until they achieve satisfactory semen status.

Bulls will be semen tested by Red Rock Ranch Vets and full insurance is recommended.

EPD ABBREVIATIONS EPDS are a powerful tool that is available for making genetic progress. EPDs incorporate the performance of the individual along with the performance of all its relatives.

CE Calving ease. The higher number predicts more calving ease.

BW Birth Weight. A lower EPD predicts more calving ease.

WW Weaning Weight. Higher weaning EPDs predict higher weaning weights.

YW Yearling Weight. EPD describes in pounds the difference in expected yearling weight in progeny, on average.

GLOSSARY OF SALE INFORMATION

MILK Milk EPD should be used to predict to the milking ability of the daughters of the bull in question. Higher milk EPDs project more milk.

REA Rib Eye Area in square inches. Describes marbling potential of calves expressed as difference in grade score.

MARB/IMF Marbling. Describes marbling potential of calves expressed as difference in grade score. IMF. Percentage of fat in the ribeye area muscle (similar to marbling)

FOOT EPD is expressed in units of both Claw and Angle based on a foot that is a 45 degree angle at the pasture joint with

appropriate toe length and the claw set has toes that are symmetrical, even and properly spaced. The lower EPD being more favourable.

GENOMIC PERCENTAGES Genomic EPDs are the best estimate of an animal’s genetic value as a parent combining all available sources of information.

Genomics permit higher prediction accuracies for younger animals and characterizes genetics for traits where it’s difficult to measure the phenotype. The top 20% of any trait will be better than the bottom 80%.

SUNNY BADLANDS 101N

We are going to start the catalog with a son from the hugely popular Ellingson Badlands. He’s a bull, with how he’s bred, we should probably be keeping. But that’s why you raise the good ones is to give others the opportunity to benefit from them. When you look through the numbers he’s top 10% in foot angle and claw and top 20% in scrotal and heifer pregnancy, with overall performance not far behind. The third generation donor dam is a pure mass cow in a moderate frame. Both her and her second generation donor mother are super feminine, angular and with perfect udders.

BEAR MTN JUSTICE

Justice is a very uniquely bred bull that would be an outcross for most. The Bear Mtn Justice bull was chosen for his maternal qualities. He is in the top 5% in the breed for Scrotal, Heifer Pregnancy and Milk, while being the top 1% in weaning and yearling weight. The absolute front pasture dam is loaded with Angus character and presence. Her dam is the Merit Flora 6078D cow, who could arguably be the best and most productive cow in the Merit herd.

ELLINGSON BADLANDS 0285 SIRE OF 101N
COLEMAN DONNA 077 DAM OF 101N

SUNNY LAWMAN 105N

Lawman is a bull we are super high on. He’s a phenotypic powerhouse with incredible thickness, muscle and soundness with a real herd bull presence. When you read through the pedigree you will find cows and bulls that have changed the breed. Obviously Bar E-L Natural Law has written his own story of being arguably the best cow making bull ever, coming from the Magnolia cow family. On the bottom you put together Hoover No Doubt with Baldridge Y69 and HF Tiger 5T, I don’t think you could write it any better. Lawman is a bull that demands your attention. The home raised donor dam comes when I obtained the Canadian rights to Baldrige Pappy and I thought what a better cross than my best Tiger daughter. The result has definitely not disappointed. This cow is feminine, angular and super efficient in a moderate frame with a perfect foot and udder.

Here’s the first bull from our new herd bull Sitz Triumph 707H. He’s a bull loaded with mass and muscle, with a huge foot and scrotal. He’s a bull we are quite high on as well. It’s going to interesting to see if 105N or 110N is going to demand more attention on sale day. Both amazing bulls but 110 is going to be all performance, as a yearling he is massive in size and scale. The docility in this bull is second to none, he’s what you call an “in your pocket type”. He might end up being the best bull in the yearling pen when you compare pure performance, capacity and pay weight. The high efficiency dam is a sample of our cow herd over the last decade crossing Arda Cash Flow with Belvin Warrior. Resulting in cows with great feet and udders that raise well above average calves.

QUEEN 824’18

Here’s a real powerhouse from the $55,000 sale topping Woodhill Revival. Belvinrox is super stout, wide pinned and has a real herd bull look to him. His powerful dam from Brooking Roll Call is a cow I bought from Belvin in there fall female sale. She absolutely milks her heart out, weaning 101M off at over 800lbs. She has only had 2 calves, but so for is destined to be a red carpet female. She has a perfect udder and awesome feet. Belvinrox with his extra volume, dimension and natural fleshing ability will turn some heads on sale day.

Here’s a well balanced, calving ease bull from LFE Best Answer that started out light and ended up heavy. He’s a bull with presence, curve-bending performance and real angus breed character. His elegant, high efficiency dam comes from the Coleman Donna family. She’s a cow that came from the Bohrson’s and is destined for greatness. Her dam is a second generation donor with stand alone maternal design.

Eliminator 103M is a phenotypic powerhouse with incredible thickness, muscle and structural soundness. Eliminator will be a profit making, high performance herd sire that our commercial clients have come to demand and appreciate. His superstar dam is moderate, very nice uddered and highly efficient. Her donor dam Remitall Queen 123B has had 16 progeny to date and goes back to a Queen cow they bought from us years ago.

103M

This is the first year for the SAV Triumph sons. The length of spine and natural fleshing ability is what will really set these bulls apart from the others and most other Territory sons that have found there way to Canada. 111M has a real herd bull look to him being powerful fronted with a big wide muzzle and breed character head. Arda Beauty 105A was the high selling pick of there bred heifers from the Angus Collection sale. She is a powerhouse big bodied cow with a perfect udder.

Triumph was a feature bull we picked up form Schaff’s in 2023. He’s a bull with the added mass and muscle but still length of spine that I’ve never seen before. He scanned an 18.2 inch ribeye before the sale and Kelly said his catalog picture absolutely blew up his phone. Triumph is a real profit maker with high performance sons that our commercial clientele appreciate. His son’s are peas in a pod with that ribeye that all high end steak houses are demanding. Triumph’s picture always seems to make it back into the SAV catalog with his absolute red carpet dam, Madame Pride 9967 raising one sale feature after another.

S

117M

Here’s another Triumph son that’s sure to impress being stylish fronted with length, muscle and structure. The beautiful, broody dam is a real power cow. She sports a very nice udder and is a production stand out. She raised the 180L bull going to Bar Diamond last year, and a sale feature going to M&R Damen the year before.

We are quite high on this bull as well. Although not quite fed like his sire he carries many of the same phenotypic qualities. He’s proud chested with a big muzzle, super long spine and amazing natural thickness. He’s a genetic trendsetter who will raise the bar to a new level with dominating performance, consistency and quality from start to finish. He will sire beautiful maternally oriented females to build a cow herd around while also feeder calves that willweigh and pay.

Customers and friends are at the center of every decision we make.

PAHL KNOW HOW 176M

Two of a kind flush brothers with the pedigree potency, phenotype, performance and maternal cow power to be real herd changers. They are thick, muscular, wide pinned and solid to the ground with authentic Angus type. The phenomenal, red carpet dam Rita 354X needs no introduction. She has raised multiple purebred herd bulls, has multiple daughters and grand daughters in herd and has embryo cattle all other the country.

Redemption was an intriguing outcross sire when I went looking in 2021. He had real breed leading maternal qualities and the pedigree potency to be a dominant force in the industry. Redemption’s calves come easy with great vigor and perform very well after weaning. His calves transmit structural correctness while adding maternal value, fertility and docility. His daughters soon to be in production look to have excellent udder design and calm dispositions. Redemption is a good looking stud with all the phenotypic extras, plus offers a rare combination of bone and calving ease.

A Mogul son that has so many positives that will benefit the breed from phenotype and performance to foot quality and cow power. His feminine, productive Next Step daughter is maternal to the core with a high quality udder and abundant milk.

A bull that is sure to impress with some added muscle, thickness and capacity. He is top 10% in weaning, yearling and ribeye. The super efficient, feminine dam is from the high selling HF Weiser bull. He definitely left a stamp on his daughters in our herd. They have gorgeous udders and feet and milk there hearts out.

A big upstanding power bull with added growth and muscle, a bull that will keep you in the beef business. The super efficient, milk machine dam is another Cash Flow, Warrior cross cow. They are just cows that will work for anyone, anywhere.

PREFERRED PROGRAM

Our recently acquired stud SR Thirty Boss AKA “Thirsty” has been an amazing addition to our horse program. He is a born broke type, such a joy to be around and super fun to ride! He was started by trainer Clint Swales last winter and had nothing but good things said about him. He has an outstanding pedigree, sired by “IM DA BOSS” on the top side who has over $19,000 in earnings on the track and his grand sire is non other than the OE $28,000,000 sire TRES SIES. On the bottom “Thirsty” is a grandson of “Paddy’s Irish Whiskey” the sire of $1,700,000 OE.

OUR SWEET SUSSIE

This sweet little filly is going to be a ranchers delight! Her conformation is outstanding, has straight legs, great hip, good wither and floats in the pasture. After this years NFR we were so excited to put her in the sale after watching a horse with similar lineage clean up in the barrel racing. With TRES SEIS on top and Hancock and Driftwood influence on the bottom, we are already seeing the same heart we fell involve with with ADIOS PANTELONES. We bought her mare “MM BLACK HANNA” AKA “Laverne” from Dantan Bertsch in 2023, and she has produced some amazing foals for both us and Dantan. “Laverne” is a stout black mare who is conformationally correct and gorgeous to look at in the pasture. Just like her siblings, Cosmopolitan as been a joy to work with! She is great with her feet and soft on the halter.

Macallan is exactly what we are looking for in our equine breeding program. Macallan came from one of our first mares “GAYLA THIS GALS SMOKIN’” AKA “MILLY”, who has a special place in our hearts. In 2013 Logan had the opportunity to work for Larry David of Gayla Quarter Horses and spent time with Milly’s sire “WT SMOKEY BLUE CASH” and swore one day he would own something out of this incredible stud. Macallan is the first cross out of “Milly” and “Thirsty” and he doesn’t disappoint. His willingness to please and take everything in stride is second to none!
