Welcome to our Ninth Online Bull Sale! We are excited to showcase our bull pen again this year with what we believe is an exceptional strong group of purebred Salers and Optimizer bulls!
Our program is raising two year old bulls. It makes the Sky West program unique. At weaning these bulls get sorted and the ones we keep for the program are grown gradually and not pushed. Summer gets the bulls out on their own pasture and they get the experience of managed grazing till mid October. In their rising two year old term they are feed a TMR of corn silage, chopped straw and chopped hay with a mineral premix. Its this kind of management that show us who is going to make bulls and who wont. This is what helps us bring out the quality bulls that we offer for sale.

As an added bonus, all Salers bulls are sire verified with Neogen Canada as well as being tested for homozygous polled and black if there is a chance that they could be. For breeders the task of having DNA on file is already done, and for all cattlemen, knowing the polled and color status on your bulls offers predictability and some peace of mind.
We urge everyone to insure their bulls through our representative from Canadian Farm insurance Monica Czech. They are great people to work with and insuring your bulls protects your investment. With insurance you get free board on your bulls until May 1, 2026. Buyers who do not insure their bulls will assume all responsibility. You can reach Monica Czech at 780-733-7715.

This bull is a heavy weight, and he is all about the average daily gain. He has a bit more frame but he carries the muscle and the pounds to round out the package. He was the number one ADG bull on test gaining 5.30lbs/ day with a gain ratio of 130 and ranked 3rd for adjusted feed to gain ratio! His REA epd also puts him in the top 3% of the breed. Use this bull to sire those calves that will pack on the pounds and can carry that heavier finishing weight.

OLDS COLLEGE FEED EFFICIENCY TESTING:
This past spring we sent the bulls to Olds College for feed efficiency testing. The test pen totaled 60 head with two breeds represented. We were happy to send them down and receive data on the bulls. In the footnotes we have mentioned some highlights from the test on some lots and data will be available to review. Below is an explanation of a couple of the metrics that were being measured by Olds College through the Vytelle organization.
RFI: residual feed intake, RFI, is a measure of feed efficiency calculated as the difference between and animal’s actual feed intake and its predicted feed intake, for a given level of production. When RFI is used as a genetic selection tool, the resulting progeny will consume less feed for the same level of production. RFI is independent of growth, body size and other performance traits (Koch et al., 1963), selection for animals with low RFI will lead to reduced feed intake and improved feed efficiency without compromising body size, carcass quality or growth. Lower RFI values are more favorable, cattle with low RFI values are more efficient than cattle with high RFI values.
F:G: feed to gain ratio, also referred to as feed conversion ratio (FCR). F:G ratio refers to the amount of feed consumed per unit of weight gain on a dry matter basis. A lower ratio is considered more favorable. While selection for F:G (FCR) results in animals that grow faster it is also associated with cattle that have a larger mature size.
