Welcome
Welcome to the Schweitzer Ranch Charolais Bull Sale, we have another really great group of our “ranchy” summer-twos on offer again this year.
Our purebreds field-calve alongside our commercial herd mid-April to mid-June, tagging and birth checking them a couple times a day (…no night checks here!). We try to maintain a very hands off approach so we cull accordingly, and really appreciate the genetic foundation we have that was established in 1981 by our folks. Mom and Dad were recently awarded Breeders of the Year from the Alberta Charolais Association, and we want to congratulate them on this milestone achievement! We are very proud to be part of the Lazy S Charolais legacy and be able to help carry on their breeding program.
We do not sell yearlings so we can feed our bulls moderately to support a natural two-year old growth trajectory. This means our bulls get to walk grass pastures for the entire grazing season without supplement, and never exceed a 1% grain to weight ratio (…which can quite commonly hit 2%). Our product is bulls not fat steers so we want them to last a while, standing up through strenuous breeding seasons and recovering condition quickly after. With these trusty-twos what you see is what you get…and what you should expect to see again next season and into the years to come.
Coffee is always on, please come anytime to view bulls, or come to the open house Feb 28/Mar 1. Talk soon,
Troy and Kristina Schweitzer

DEVELOPEMENT, MANAGEMENT AND PHILOSOPHY
Culling/Selection: Selling two year-olds enables us to have a multi-year culling process. We cull from the time they are born right up until sale day for conformation, performance, testicles, hoof & leg structure, calving ease and disposition. By sale time we are usually down to near half the crop we started with, so the bulls left are uniform and consistent and gives us peace of mind to sell. In our cow herd we like the Darwin model/survival of the fittest. The purebreds run with our commercial herd in the winter until pasture time and calve on the range. Foot issues, udder issues, calving issues, attitude issues all go down the road because we don’t have the time or manpower to deal with anymore than we have to.
Feet and Legs: We strive to sell bulls that will cover ground and stand up to the pressures of their environments, and the mature weights they develop into. We try to keep an adequate amount of bone and size in our herd to support the weight and performance everyone desires from the Charolais breed without compromising overall calving ease. All of our sale bulls have a straight toe on those rear wheels that is evenly balanced and has adequate size to support their frame and weight as they grow. Front wheels too, it is important they are balanced and don’t have more than a slight natural curl there.
Hoof Trimming: No feet have been trimmed on any sale bulls.
Birth Weight/Calving Ease: When selecting bulls for my commercial herd I try not to get too hung up on birth weight alone, and I focus more on other calving ease traits such as a long narrow head, good neck extension and flat shoulder. Hip locks are almost non-existent for us so I don’t give that much consideration. If we get bull calves over 115 lbs I generally keep them for use on my own commercial herd of angus and angus-cross cows because they are a harder sell for us…but we absolutely love them for the performance we gain without any additional calving difficulty. We calve on the range and seldom have to assist anything unless it is malpresentation and they get up and suck right away. Shape of the calf on these long Charolais bulls truly is key, since length isn’t a dimension that will add any difficulty to how it comes out but it does add weight (…when they are born and when you sell). You also have to consider that the cow genetically contributes 50% to birth weight and she will also naturally have bigger calves as she gets older. Keep this in mind when selecting your bulls, if you generally don’t have calving issues in your herd and want to increase gains/profits then don’t be afraid to push that birth weight if the bull is built right. If you already have a lot of calving issues from big birth weights then maybe you already have enough performance or you have an older aged herd, and need to bring birth weights down to compensate. Extra Length = Extra Pounds (in the spring and in the fall).
DNA Testing: Every one of our calves has their DNA taken when they are born and are sire verified prior to registration so that you will never get a mix up in what you are getting. Once sampled and sent to the lab we can also request a myriad of other test results such as Homo Polled status.
Feeding: We do not sell yearlings so we can feed our bulls moderately to support a natural two-year old growth trajectory. This means our bulls get to walk grass pastures for the entire grazing season without supplement, and are never pushed hard on grain, just a well-balanced TMR ration. Our product is bulls not fat steers so we want them to last a while, standing up through strenuous breeding seasons and recovering condition quickly after.
Disposition: We took on a really quiet herd of Jan/Feb calving cows from my parents/Lazy S Charolais in 2020 and rolled them back to April/May calving on the range with our commercial herd here. We weren’t sure how that was going to impact the attitudes of future offspring but we really wanted to preserve the gentle nature and easy handling of the herd. Five years later we continue to turn out easy going stock by culling out the odd bad apple that comes along and trying to make a point of getting some face time with them whenever we can (…which isn’t as often as we would like). Our handling practices and infrastructure generally turned out pretty settled stock even with our commercial herd but I was kind of amazed just how much genetics played a part in the docility of our purebreds. Our bull picture/video day this year was a testament to how easy our bulls are to handle and to the good natured disposition of the group of bulls we have in the sale. Dacie from DLMS/CattleVids who was taking the pictures and has done tens of thousands over the years commented on them being one of the quietest and easy going late born group of twos she’s done.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN THE DLMS FARM GATE TIMED AUCTION WITH EXTENDED BIDDING:
1.Visit dlms.ca and follow the link to the DLMS Farm Gate timed auction site www.farmgatetimedauctions. ca, click the LOGIN/REGISTRATION button. First time users will select the REGISTER button from this page. Fill out the registration form to signup for a free user account and it allows you to select a username and password for use on all Farm Gate Timed auctions. This program will send you text and email messages whenever there is activity on your favorite lots, or someone challenges your proxy bid and this is why you will be asked for both your current email and cell phone number. If you are a past participant in the Farm Gate Timed auctions simply enter your username and password to continue. This takes you to a list of both current and upcoming Farm Gate Auctions.
2. You can choose your favourite lots in this sale at this time and the program will allow you to open either all sale lots or just your favorite lots on your screen. Any time there is active bidding on a lot you have identified on your favorite list you will get a text and/or an email noting this activity.
3. The program allows you to place a proxy bid on any sale lot. This in fact protects your interest in any lot of interest for you to a specified dollar value you set, when you may not be able to give 100% attention to the sale. If the lot has a $2000 bid on it and you place a proxy bid of $3500 into the system, the computer will bid $2100 for you but if some one else bids $2200, the computer will again bid for you, this time at $2300. The system will look after your interest to a maximum of $3500. If another bidder is on at $3600, your proxy will no longer be effective and you will no longer have the winning bid on this lot without once again logging in and bidding again or moving your attention to a second lot of interest.
4. At closing time of the sale the entire sale will extend bidding if a bid is placed on any lot in the sale. Any bid received after close time will extend the sale by the time listed on each sale. In most cases the time gets shorter the longer in to extended bidding the sale is. When no bidding occurs for the extended time the computer will declare the sale finished.
5. Following the sale the Consignor or Sale Manager will invoice all buyers in the sale, please contact the seller with questions or to arrange delivery, pick up or shipping of your purchases. For more info and assistance with bidding contact any of the sale contacts listed on the DLMS Website; DLMS Farm Gate Timed Auctions ~ Mark Shologan Ph: 780-699-5082
FAQ:
WHAT IS RACEHORSE STYLE SALE CLOSE?
Racehorse style sale close is when the entire sale stays open in extended bidding. This type of sale allows you as the bidder to change to a different lot within the same sale if the bidding has gone in to extended bidding.
HOW WILL EXTENDED BIDDING WORK?
When we get to the close out end time the clock for close extends with any bid placed with less than 5 min on the clock. This type of extended bidding turns the end time to more of a soft time. Extended bidding allows bidders to compete in lots like a real auction and give all bidders the same time to make a decision. Always follow the clock to see how much time remains in the sale you are interested in.
