e name Evening Tinge has a certain reverence in the Angus business, one it has rightly earned. It’s a name synonymous with top-quality females, and its story is intwined with that of visionary stockmen on both sides of the Atlantic who have greatly shaped the Angus breed with the help of this in uential bloodline.
e history of the Evening Tinge cow family begins in the Scottish Highlands, on the Ballindalloch Estate in Banshire. Here, at what is now considered the spiritual home of the Angus breed, is where Aberdeen Angus cattle were re ned in the 19th century. e Ballindalloch herd was established in 1860 by Sir George Macpherson-Grant, the third baronet of Ballindalloch, who dedicated his life to the improvement of the black cattle he loved. In the 1870s, Macpherson-Grant exhibited his cattle at the prestigious Paris Universal Exhibition, winning such acclaim that he became known as “the Perfecter of Angus.” Today, Ballindalloch is home to the oldest Angus herd in the world, and numerous top modern cow families can trace their lineage back to this program.
Bloodlines from Ballindalloch were instrumental to the establishment of the Angus breed in North America, with notable imports laying the foundation for Canadian and American herds in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. One such female was Evening Tinge. Born in 1928, she was imported to the United States as a yearling by Hartley Stock Farms of Page, North Dakota, where her legacy became linked with that of breed builders on both sides of the border.
Guilford G. Hartley, the owner of Hartley Stock Farms, started out in the logging business in Minnesota before expanding into a wide variety of industries, including railway, hardware, dry goods, real estate, and agriculture. Hartley raised Guernsey cattle and grew produce on his two Minnesota farms, and over in North Dakota, he established what would become a prominent purebred Angus operation, raising cattle that would claim the champion honours at the Chicago International Livestock Show throughout the 1920s.
e manager of Hartley Stock Farms who imported Evening Tinge from Ballindalloch was Kenneth McGregor, a Canadian Angus breeder. He rose to prominence as a leader in the breed, helping to expand the reach of Angus cattle in programs across the western U.S. A er his time at Hartley Stock Farms, McGregor partnered in Gwenmar Stock Farm in Manitoba with his brother-in-law and later served as president of the American Angus Association in 1941-42. McGregor had his own impressive roots in the cattle business, being the son of James D. McGregor of Glencarnock Stock Farm at Brandon, Manitoba. e elder McGregor started his herd in 1890, importing seedstock from Scotland and the U.S. and raising many leading sires and females that did exceptionally well in the show ring from 1909-25. McGregor was the president of the Canadian Angus Association from 1911-20, served as Manitoba’s Lieutenant-Governor from 1929-34, and was among the inaugural inductees to the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame.
e Evening Tinge bloodline was introduced to Canada when Sam Henderson of Heatherbrook Farms at Lacombe, Alberta bought a daughter of the original imported female from Hartley Stock Farms in 1936. Purchased as a yearling, Evening Tinge of Page 2nd was the foundation female of the Heatherbrook Evening Tinge cow family, which made a great impact on the advancement of the Angus breed in Canada.
Sam Henderson and his parents, Tom and Sarah, established their herd in 1909 and registered their rst Angus cattle in 1910. He travelled extensively in the 1920s and 1930s, exhibiting cattle with much success at top shows such as the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto and the Chicago International Livestock Show. e Evening Tinge females raised by Heatherbrook were incredibly fertile and would always outproduce themselves, easily making this the favourite cow family for both Sam and his son, Don.

e Heatherbrook program was hugely signi cant in shaping the Angus breed in Canada, with several famous Canadian cow families originating from their herd, including the Evening Tinge females. At one time it was estimated that approximately 75 percent of all Angus cattle coming from western Canadian herds had ancestors either bred at or brought to Canada by Heatherbrook Farms. Accordingly, the Henderson family were named by the American Angus Hall of Fame as among the most in uential people in the breed internationally, and in 2011 they were recognized by the Canadian Angus Association for more than a century of dedication to the breed in Canada.
e prominence of the Evening Tinge cow family can be illustrated by the long list of herds it has le its mark on, and following one pedigree on the maternal line takes you on a journey through the history of the Angus breed in Canada. For example, Southolm Angus of Coaldale, AB brought Evening Tinge genetics from the Heatherbrook lineage into their program, eventually exporting genetics back to the United Kingdom. Evening Tinge of Southolm 72B was purchased by Banner Angus of Rocky Mountain House, AB, and a daughter of this female, Evening Tingle of Banner 31M, sold to Arda
Angus of Acme, AB. Her daughter, Arda Evening Tingle 38R, was purchased by the Hamiltons of Rannoch Farm, and in 1993, Hamilton Farms of Cochrane, AB leased a group of cows from the Rannoch herd, which included their Evening Tinge females. is cow family became one of the leading bloodlines in their herd.
More recently, Johnson Livestock of Peebles, Saskatchewan acquired HF Evening Tinge 57R in 2007, becoming the foundation female for their purebred Angus program and their most valuable cow. ey went on to register 60 of her progeny and sold more than $60,000 in embryos as well. ese genetics expanded even further when Johnson Livestock dispersed in 2020, with Evening Tinge females being introduced to herds in Ontario to much success, continuing this fascinating history.

is is just one branch of the bloodline; the same could be said for the Evening Tinge females raised by the historic Woodlawn Farms of Creston, Illinois. Heatherbrook Evening Tinge 54G was purchased in the 1950s as the foundation female of the Woodlawn program’s Evening Tinge cow family, a bloodline that has had a major impact on the Angus breed. Her daughter, Eventide of Woodlawn, was the Reserve Grand Champion Female at the 1962 National Western Stock Show, and later became a top-producing female for Meadow Lane Farm of North Salem, New York. As well, Heatherbrook Evening Tinge 54G was the maternal grand-dam of one of the all-time great bulls bred by the Woodlawn program, Woodlawn Bardoliermere 93. is in uential bull received great attention in the show ring, earning the title of Grand Champion Bull at the 1962 American Royal Livestock Show and Reserve Senior Champion Bull at the 1963 National Western Stock Show before going on to make his own impact on the Angus world.
Today, a simple Google search for “Evening Tinge” yields mentions of females from countless Angus programs across Canada, the U.S., and the U.K., with the myriad positive traits of these females noted in each entry. With a proud history of producing high-quality, in uential females, the Evening Tinge cow family continues to generate excitement, and history of producing high-quality, in uential females, the Evening Tinge cow family continues to generate excitement, and its future is brimming with promise.

e story of the Duchess/Magnolia family began when my father, Sandy, purchased Double Four Duchess 12G as a twoyear-old at the prestigious Cross Country Sale in Lacombe, Alberta, managed by Lloyd Pickard and Doug Henderson. I’ll never forget the day Jim Brown delivered Duchess 12G. A er taking her home to calve, Jim brought her to us, and I turned to my dad and said, “Wow, that’s quite a cow!”
Looking back, not every mating choice for her was ideal, but every one of her daughters proved to be exceptional producers. e most notable of these was BAR-E-L Magnolia 143K, the result of a mating to a son of Strathmore April 3A. Like her mother, Magnolia 143K excelled in both quality and production. It’s easy to understand how BAR-E-L Natural Law 52Y became such an in uential sire, given the exceptional females in his pedigree. Another standout son was BARE-L Unforgiven 102U.
Strathmore April 3A, a direct daughter of Pine Drive Big Sky, epitomized the ideal Angus cow—near perfect frame size, exceptional rib capacity, superior milk ow, and the ability to raise the heaviest calf at weaning. Unfortunately, she was lost too soon, but her legacy lives on through her descendants in the April family. One of her most notable progeny is BAR-E-L April 51F, and we encourage you to watch for her sons and grandsons in this year’s sale o ering.
As we re ect on the growth of our Black Angus herd and the success stories of our customers, it’s clear that the Duchess and April cow families have been pivotal in shaping both our herd and the herds of our trusted partners.
When you consider the depth of production from these two families, BAR-E-L Erica 74A stands out. At eleven years of age, she sold for $550,000 US, a remarkable achievement for any cow, and she has become a world-renowned household name with countless outstanding progeny.
Most recently, LT Marquee 169L made headlines with a record-breaking sale of his ½ US semen interest for $700,000 US, setting a new record for a Canadian-born Angus bull.
