W elcome

To our annual bull sale. We would first like to thank all our buyers over the years, we feel extremely grateful to be able to sell our bulls to some tremendous people in the cattle industry and to see our bulls go out and work well for all of you. Your continued support keeps us excited to produce the best herd sire prospects that we can. This past fall has been a real positive outlook in the cattle market, don’t think any producer thought prices would have been as good as they were. It is about time.

Again this year, we feel we have a great group of yearling bulls on offer. This is one of the strongest most consistent group of bulls to date. Whether you are looking for Red, Black, performance or calving ease, there is a bull for any program. This year we have on offer some tremendous black Balancer bulls that are all like peas in a pod, all very uniform. The reds are just as good and very consistent.

As in the past years we develop our bulls on a forage based free choice grass/hay mix as well as Trouw Nutrition Bull Ration which they only get 12 lbs a day to maximize longevity. We want natural thickness bred in not fed in.

The sires to all these bulls are a very uniform group of herd sires that all have tremendous amount of natural thickness and great body structure as well as good solid feet.

UNDERSTANDING EPDs

CALVING EASE DIRECT (CE)

Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. This EPD can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd.

BIRTH WEIGHT (BW)

Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf.

WEANING WEIGHT (WW)

Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning.

YEARLING WEIGHT (YW)

Predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling.

MILK (MILK)

The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight.

We believe the foundation of our program is our females and we pride ourselves in having a great group of dams that could raise any bull or replacement female.

We will again be selling this year’s bulls on DLMS Farm Gate Timed Auction. We are very happy with this format to our sale and have had great feedback about doing it this way. So thanks again for supporting the sale.

The sale is March 3 & 4th the bulls will be available for viewing any time before the sale, just give us a call and we will be happy to walk you through the pens as well as show you their dams. For more info on any of the bulls don’t hesitate to call.

All the information on how to get on and bid is offered in the catalog. Feel free to call us or DLMS if you are needing assistance.

CALVING EASE MATERNAL (CEM)

Represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s first-calving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. This EPD is important to a rancher’s bottom line because it predicts which animals pro-duce daughters with a genetic predisposition to calve unassisted as heifers.

STAYABILITY (ST)

Predicts the genetic difference, in terms of percent probability, that a bull’s daughters will stay productive within a herd to at least six year of age. The stayability EPD is one of the best measures currently available to compare a bull’s abil-ity to produce females with reproductive longevity.

YIELD GRADE (YG)

Differences in yield grade score, which is a predictor of percent retail product. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio.

CARCASS WEIGHT (CW)

Differences in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint.

RIBEYE AREA (REA)

Differences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable.

MARBLING (MB)

Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades.

FAT (FAT)

Differences for fat thickness, in inches, for a carcass over the 12th rib, smaller numbers of fat thickness are preferable as excess fat can be detrimental to yield grade.

If you are a past participant in the Farm Gate Timed auctions simply enter your username and password to continue. This takes you to a list of both current and upcoming Farm Gate Auctions.

You can choose your favourite lots in this sale at this time and the program will allow you to open either all sale lots or just your favorite lots on your screen. Any time there is active bidding on a lot you have identified on your favorite list you will get a text and/or an email noting this activity.

The program allows you to place a proxy bid on any sale lot. This in fact protects your interest in any lot of interest for you to a specified dollar value you set, when you may not be able to give 100% attention to the sale. If the lot has a $2000 bid on it and you place a proxy bid of $3500 into the system, the computer will bid $2100 for you but if some one else bids $2200, the computer will again bid for you, this time at $2300. The system will look after your interest to a maximum of $3500. If another bidder is on at $3600, your proxy will no longer be effective and you will no longer have the winning bid on this lot without once again logging in and bidding again or moving your attention to a second lot of interest.

At closing time of the sale the entire sale will extend bidding if a bid is placed on any lot in the sale. Any bid received after close time will extend the sale by the time listed on each sale. In most cases the time gets shorter the longer in to extended bidding the sale is. When no bidding occurs for the extended time the computer will declare the sale finished.

WHAT IS RACEHORSE STYLE SALE CLOSE?

Racehorse style sale close is when the entire sale stays open in extended bidding. This type of sale allows you as the bidder to change to a different lot within the same sale if the bidding has gone in to extended bidding.

HOW WILL EXTENDED BIDDING WORK?

When we get to the close out end time the clock for close extends with any bid placed with less than 5 min on the clock. This type of extended bidding turns the end time to more of a soft time. Extended bidding allows bidders to compete in lots like a real auction and give all bidders the same time to make a decision. Always follow the clock to see how much time remains in the sale you are interested in.
