Handhills Farming

to our first annual bull sale. We have been selling bulls of the farm for a number of years now but decided to switch to an online sale so our customers get equal opportunity to select a bull. All bulls sell fully guaranteed but bulls are bulls and accidents do happen. Should a bull fail to be a satisfactory breeder he will be replaced or a sale credit will be given. The bulls have been fed to last. They have been fed a bullseye pellet with a high roughage diet. We feel this is the best set of bulls to date whether its Simmental, Angus or Percentage bulls your looking for. These bulls are performance orientated with high maternal values. All percentage bulls have been DNA tested to check breed composition. Foot structure is high on the list when selecting new herd sires. We have a complete herd health and vaccination program with CCHMS and all bulls have been semen tested by DR WAYLON WISE. Please call or drop by anytime to evaluate the bulls and visit.

Disease Prevention

Cow/Calf Health and Management Solutions (CCHMS) collaborate with Handhills Farming to manage their entire herd through an integrated and comprehensive health and production management program. Detailed data is collected on each individual animal at all key health and production points and is kept in a secure web-enabled database called Herdtrax®. We continually monitor and audit this data and use this information to improve the health, welfare, performance and efficiency of the entire operation.

Handhills Farming follows a detailed vaccination program to help ensure that the cattle stay healthy and continue to thrive after they’re delivered.

Calves are vaccinated within the first 10 days of life:

• IBR/PI3/BRSV (MLV) – Inforce 3® (intransal)

Calves are vaccinated in the spring prior to pasture turnout with the following:

• IBR/PI3/BRSV (MLV) – Inforce 3® (intransal)

• BVD (MLV) and Mannhaemia hemolytica – One Shot® BVD

• 7 way Clostridial and Histophilus Somnus – Ultrabac® 7/Somnubac®

Calves are vaccinated at weaning with the following:

• IBR/PI3/BRSV/BVD (MLV) and Mannhaemia – Bovi-Shield® GOLD One Shot®

• 7 way Clostridial and HIstophilus Somnus – Ultrabac® 7/Somnubac®

• Parasite Control –Ivermectin.

Cows, bred heifers, bulls and replacement heifers are vaccinated pre-breeding:

• IBR/PI3/BRSV/BVD (MLV) – Bovi-Shield® GOLD FP®5 (Fetal Protection)

Bulls prior to the delivery will be boostered, and ready for turnout:

• IBR/PI3/BRSV/BVD – Bovi-Shield® GOLD FP®5

DNA Testing

DNA samples are collected at birth on all calves and sent for 100K testing. Parent verification, breed composition and gEPD’s are aligned against the hard data and used to build internal indexing on the herd, drive selection pressure and provide targeted mating strategies.

Breeding Soundness Examination

Each bull has passed an extensive Bull Soundness Examination which includes soundness of structure, palpation of testis and internal sex glands, scrotal circumference, examination of the penis as well as verifying sufficient sperm motility and morphology. Bulls that are Satisfactory have already passed the above criteria at sale time. Those bulls that are deemed as “Decision Deferred” are physically normal, prepubertal or stressed and showing sufficient signs of improvement. It’s not unusual for semen quality to fluctuate throughout the year and semen quality does not always correlate with libido and serving capacity. There is a very high probability they will be satisfactory as soon as the days get longer and the grass get greener. There is considerable selection pressure placed on young bulls and up to 30% of all bulls will fail to produce an adequate sample at 12 mo., 15% at 14 mo., 5% at 16 mo. None of the decision deferred bulls will be delivered until they prove to be a satisfactory breeder. If there are any questions please contact me and I can always find the time to talk about cows, bulls and the ever-evolving, dynamic nature of this cattle industry.

Congrats on outstanding pen of bulls.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN THE DLMS FARM GATE TIMED AUCTION WITH EXTENDED BIDDING:

1.Visit dlms.ca and follow the link to the DLMS Farm Gate timed auction site www.farmgatetimedauctions.ca, click the LOGIN/REGISTRATION button. First time users will select the REGISTER button from this page. Fill out the registration form to signup for a free user account and it allows you to select a username and password for use on all Farm Gate Timed auctions. This program will send you text and email messages whenever there is activity on your favorite lots, or someone challenges your proxy bid and this is why you will be asked for both your current email and cell phone number. If you are a past participant in the Farm Gate Timed auctions simply enter your username and password to continue. This takes you to a list of both current and upcoming Farm Gate Auctions.

2. You can choose your favourite lots in this sale at this time and the program will allow you to open either all sale lots or just your favorite lots on your screen. Any time there is active bidding on a lot you have identified on your favorite list you will get a text and/or an email noting this activity.

3. The program allows you to place a proxy bid on any sale lot. This in fact protects your interest in any lot of interest for you to a specified dollar value you set, when you may not be able to give 100% attention to the sale. If the lot has a $2000 bid on it and you place a proxy bid of $3500 into the system, the computer will bid $2100 for you but if some one else bids $2200, the computer will again bid for you, this time at $2300. The system will look after your interest to a maximum of $3500. If another bidder is on at $3600, your proxy will no longer be effective and you will no longer have the winning bid on this lot without once again logging in and bidding again or moving your attention to a second lot of interest.

4. At closing time of the sale the entire sale will extend bidding if a bid is placed on any lot in the sale. Any bid received after close time will extend the sale by the time listed on each sale. In most cases the time gets shorter the longer in to extended bidding the sale is. When no bidding occurs for the extended time the computer will declare the sale finished.

5. Following the sale the Consignor or Sale Manager will invoice all buyers in the sale, please contact the seller with questions or to arrange delivery, pick up or shipping of your purchases.

FAQ:

WHAT IS RACEHORSE STYLE SALE CLOSE? Racehorse style sale close is when the entire sale stays open in extended bidding. This type of sale allows you as the bidder to change to a different lot within the same sale if the bidding has gone in to extended bidding.

HOW WILL EXTENDED BIDDING WORK? When we get to the close out end time the clock for close extends with any bid placed with less than 5 min on the clock. This type of extended bidding turns the end time to more of a soft time. Extended bidding allows bidders to compete in lots like a real auction and give all bidders the same time to make a decision. Always follow the clock to see how much time remains in the sale you are interested in.

3. How to Bid

Now that you are logged in and your account phone number / email is verified you are able to bid on an upcoming sale. Simply find the lot you are interested in bidding on. After you have found the lot there are 2 options for bidding on the lot.

- Place Next Bid – to place the next bid on the item, you see the amount in the first box, you simply click the “Place Bid” button and after you review the bid and agree to the terms and conditions your bid will be placed.

- Max Bid Amount – to place a max bid you put your max bid in the second box listed as “Max Bid” on the item, and then click the “Place Bid” button and after you review the bid and agree to the terms and conditions your bid will be placed as the next bid. With the Max Bid placed the computer will then keep you as the high bidder to the max amount you have placed. This can be a great feature if you are not able to give 100% attention to the sale close out and protect your interest so you do not miss out on any lots you want to purchase. The Max Bid amount is completely confidential from the seller during the sale process.

Example of How the Max Bid Works - If the lot has a $2000 bid on it and you place a proxy bid of $3500 into the system, the computer will bid $2100 for you but if some one else bids $2200, the computer will again bid for you, this time at $2300. The system will look after your interest to a maximum of $3500. If another bidder is on at $3600, your proxy will no longer be effective and you will no longer have the winning bid on this lot without once again logging in and bidding again or moving your attention to a second lot of interest. Please note that in some cases a lot value can change very quickly if 2 max bids are placed on the same lot competing against each other.

4. Watch List Feature

If you have items in multiple auctions or only a few from the same auction that you want to watch with out having to scroll through the entire list, you can add the lots to your watchlist. On each lot you will see the “eye” button beside the bid button, by clicking this “watchlist” Icon that item is added to your personal watchlist for easy viewing of just your favorite lots in this sale or on the entire site.

5. Sale Ending / Closeout

Most Farm Gate Timed Auction sales close racehorse style with extended bidding. What is Racehorse Style Close? Racehorse style sale close is when the entire sale stays open in extended bidding. This type of sale allows you as the bidder to change to a different lot within the same sale if the bidding has gone in to extended bidding. How will Extended Bidding works? When we get to the close out end time the clock for close extends with any bid placed with less than 5 min on the clock. This type of extended bidding turns the end time to more of a soft time. Extended bidding allows bidders to compete in lots like a real auction and give all bidders the same time to make a decision. Always follow the clock to see how much time remains in the sale you are interested in.

6. Bidding Close & Follow-up

After the clock has gone to “ENDED” and no bidding has occurred for 5 min the computer will declare the sale finished. Following the close typically within 24 hours of the sale close the sale consignor will contact all winning bidders to arrange payment, transfer of pedigrees and delivery/Pick up of your lot. Or as the winning bidder you can contact the sale consignor / sale manager to confirm payment instructions. Please make sure that your account info is up-to-date and correct if you are the winning bidder of a lot as this is how the billing is sent to Sale Manager and/or Sale Consignor.
