This marks our 14th year of offering two year old bulls in an online format and 33 years in the seed-stock business. From the gloomy years of 2003, to today, I never could have dreamt the cattle business that we are experiencing now. It sure is nice to witness so many upbeat fellow producers today. Fingers crossed, it is long lived, as we all deserve it!

We never take this responsibility of being seed-stock suppliers lightly and will always remain a very practical source for your herd bull needs. Once again, these bulls are presented without all the fluff and fuss commonly seen at other places. What you see at sale time, is what you get. No fear of damaged bulls from hot rations, no adjustments to diet when they go to their new homes, no melt down or post sale disappointments. Just real cattle, raised in real conditions that mimic the commercial cattleman’s world.

1. Visit dlms.ca and follow the link to the DLMS Farm Gate timed auction site www.farmgatetimedauctions.ca, click the LOGIN/REGISTRATION button. First time users will select the REGISTER button from this page. Fill out the registration form to signup for a free user account and it allows you to select a username and password for use on all Farm Gate Timed auctions. This program will send you text and email messages whenever there is activity on your favorite lots, or someone challenges your proxy bid and this is why you will be asked for both your current email and cell phone number. If you are a past participant in the Farm Gate Timed auctions simply enter your username and password to continue. This takes you to a list of both current and upcoming Farm Gate Auctions.
2. You can choose your favourite lots in this sale at this time and the program will allow you to open either all sale lots or just your favorite lots on your screen. Any time there is active bidding on a lot you have identified on your favorite list you will get a text and/or an email noting this activity.
3. The program allows you to place a proxy bid on any sale lot. This in fact protects your interest in any lot of interest for you to a specified dollar value you set, when you may not be able to give 100% attention to the sale. If the lot has a $2000 bid on it and you place a proxy bid of $3500 into the system, the computer will bid $2100 for you but if some one else bids $2200, the computer will again bid for you, this time at $2300. The system will look after your interest to a maximum of $3500. If another bidder is on at $3600, your proxy will no longer be effective and you will no longer have the winning bid on this lot without once again logging in and bidding again or moving your attention to a second lot of interest.
4. At closing time of the sale the entire sale will extend bidding if a bid is placed on any lot in the sale. Any bid received after close time will extend the sale by the time listed on each sale. In most cases the time gets shorter the longer in to extended bidding the sale is. When no bidding occurs for the extended time the computer will declare the sale finished.

WHAT IS RACEHORSE STYLE SALE CLOSE?
Racehorse style sale close is when the entire sale stays open in extended bidding. This type of sale allows you as the bidder to change to a different lot within the same sale if the bidding has gone in to extended bidding.
HOW
WILL EXTENDED BIDDING WORK?
When we get to the close out end time the clock for close extends with any bid placed with less than 5 min on the clock. This type of extended bidding turns the end time to more of a soft time. Extended bidding allows bidders to compete in lots like a real auction and give all bidders the same time to make a decision. Always follow the clock to see how much time remains in the sale you are interested in.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
For 33 years, we have been diligently working on creating realistic genetics for the realistic commercial cattle sector. Unlike more traditional purebred practices, where feed and labour resources are seemingly endless, we purposely challenge our genetics by creating limitations, to test their ability and resistance to fall-out. Through a no-nonsense, lower input, one strike you’re out policy, we have been able to identify the most functional cattle who can do the most with the least. Our cow herd is the backbone and proving grounds to what the bulls are. The cows are expected to be very fertile(45 day breed-up), have a high level of maternal intelligence(no calving barns and cameras-they calve out on grass) and properly balanced in milk and growth production that they are easy enough fleshing to handle our extended grazing system. Quite simply, it’s very much a hands off, no touch system, where they are required to be self sufficient. Because of this, to find the most adapted cattle, we’ve sourced them largely from within our own program. Through our stringent culling process, we identify the most adapted, then reproduce from those genetics. By default, this also creates more consistency and predictability, because they’ve been proven out under our stringent system, in our environment, generation over generation. It is our hopes that you see this value not only through the proper structural phenotype of the cattle, but also the many years of practical production that these cattle were required to evolve from.
BULL DEVELOPMENT
These bulls represent a system of true, 100% forage development. Right from birth, they have been grown and developed strictly on forages alone. Zero grain, green-feed, silage or protein supplements, tubs or minimum mega-cal ration requirements. This choice isn’t because we are against these products, they are terrific options for the feedlot and feed yard sector. For us, this choice is because of the value we get by truly testing our cattle by removing all the crutches. By adding hurdles and creating a challenging environment, we uncover the most robust and best. This cannot be achieved in a system where there is unlimited feed resources of the highest quality, trucked right to them in a dry-lot, on a daily basis. These systems only show who does the best when given the best and in the easiest of environments. This is not reality in the real world of commercial cattle production and only leads to reproduction of cattle that are genetically unbalanced, inefficient and unfit for their environment. This is the reason we do what we do. Closing the gap between the commercial cattle producers expectations and seed-stock production; this is the core of our intentions. In closing, these bulls and their mothers are expected to hustle for a living, out grazing green or stockpiled forages from April through December, then winter on forages grown right here in our area. Like their mothers, these bulls are not confined to corrals to manipulate maximum gains. We strategically place their feed, water points and shelter great distances apart; requiring them to walk a minimum of 1 mile per day. This goes a long way in testing proper structure, mobility, fleshing ability and ensures they’re fit for the rigours of the breeding fields. Being fit and adjusted for reality should be the seed-stock producers responsibility, not yours!
DEBUNKING THE “POUNDS PAY” IDEOLOGY
In today’s era of high input costs, weaning weights no longer hold the same value they once did, when discussing ranch profitability. In today’s world, it’s all about sustainable-or better yet, regenerative per acre production. This metric revolves around efficiency of production, health and resiliency of the resource, rather than the old method of maximum production. Anyone that has been at this business long enough, realizes that controlling inputs is the only thing we have some level of control over. Industry has been chasing the fallacy of constantly adding more pounds weaned, in the attempt to offset the incurred inputs. We’ve hit a wall folks, and the only thing disguising the monkey on our back, is today’s unprecedented cattle market. It’s well documented that the chase for more pounds has pushed cow weights through the roof and beyond the realm of efficiency. Studies show that mature cow weights go up by 100 pounds to achieve just 10 pounds of gain in weaning weight. Added insult to injury is that studies also show that it actually takes 50 pounds of added weaning weight to pay for that 100 pound increased in cow weight..not exactly a sound business model for return on investment.
This is exactly why we take the approach with our genetics that we do. Working within our environment and natural resource constraints, rather than manipulating and exploiting it to fit an unsustainable system. Nothing proves more true than the statement that Mother Nature has deeper pockets than producers and always bats last. We are in a new time where ranching will require a much different view on production from what we once knew. Cheap resources of yesterday is no longer our leverage point. In fact, it is now what will cripple our ranches and industry. If we truly care about the next generation taking over, it’s vital we re-think today’s model of beef production. Old thinking and management practices of being slaves to a broken system has zero appeal. We need to rethink and rework today’s system if we want any future succession to happen.

It is our goal to deliver every single bull right to your farm gate. We know everyone is busy, so we make provisions in our schedule to offer this service. We do charge a nominal fee of only $1/km to recoup fuel expenses.
Or if you prefer to come pickup your purchase, we do offer $100 credit per bull. We prefer that all deliveries/pickups occur prior to May. 15th as that is when we get busy with calving, seeding and all the other spring work.
BULL KEEP
Your new purchases can be left here at GBT free of charge until April 1st. Thereafter, we charge a nominal fee of $3/day per bull. Please advise us at time of sale what you require for bull keep needs, so proper invoicing can be done at time of bull settlement.
We don’t strictly enforce bulls to be insured, but we highly recommend doing so. We do our level best to care for the animals while they stay, but accidents can happen and we are not financially liable for any injuries or death of bulls after sale closing.
DATA COLLECTION
We take the extra effort to collect and present the most valuable information for our customers, to make the most informed purchasing decisions. We judge them hard and without bias. We lay our reputation on the line with the accuracy of this data. This info is a great insight into what the cattle are. We score:
- calf size at birth
- dams disposition
- teat and udder score at calving (when there bags at its fullest)
- disposition of bulls
- foot angle and shape
- hair shed
ABBREVIATIONS AND OUR RATING SYSTEM EXPLAINED
BW = Birth Weight.
S=70lbs or less. M=70-85lbs. L=90-100lbs. Like our customers we sell to, we do not fuss with birth weights. Cows and heifers calve on grass without issue or they are culled. Trouble free calving is genetically bred in over generations. Because we don’t chase extremes, we have not sacrificed calving ease-it’s all about balance,
Our calving ease scoring system is based on multiple factors. At the time of calving we assign each calf an estimated weight range (we have a pretty good gauge of this from years of weighing calves); then we take into consideration the calf’s structure and we look at the momma to see if she has swelling or tears from birthing. We take this calving info and cross reference it with the pedigree and the dams calving history to put together a score that potential customers can use to aid their decision. We feel this system has more merit than simply a birth weight or birth weight EPD, as there is a broader collection of information.

Yearling docility scores are used to predict differences in docility in the population and should be collected in the same age window as yearling weights. Animals are scored on a 1-to-6 scale. A score of 1 represents cattle with mild dispositions and favorable temperaments, while a score of 6 describes very aggressive animals. These scores are designed to evaluate disposition differences when processing animals through the chute, including how animals enter, exit and react while being handled.

One of those rare bulls who has the unique ability to sire equally good male and female progeny. The 2026 sale will mark his fourth set of sons offered-they are popular! Like all the X-Plus line, these cattle are beautifully headed, very easy fleshing and incredibly gentle natured, with females having very nice udders. A Weatherproof 2002 son that we utilized as a yearling, before selling in our 2024 sale. Our most leveraged decision when selecting bulls to use, is almost exclusively by the goodness of the mother, her production consistency and amount of stacked, proven cows in the pedigree. Dam is reliably a no fail producer, with every bull not only making the sale but also being bulls customers seek out at sale time for their appeal. Several 2226 sons on offer and females retained in herd as replacements. Maternal brother sells as lot 2429!
We talk a lot about the females behind our bulls. Reason is, they are the backbone of where goodness comes-especially when they become proven in a demanding system. A bull (or female) that has a weak or undesirable dam, simply produces inconsistent, weak and undesirable progeny. No other metric matters as much as adeptness does. GBT Cleo 1237, will calve again at 14 years of age this spring. Through time, she has proven to be our greatest Legacy 624 daughter. She’s produced many good bulls for our sale, with her son, GBT E-Transfer 2338 being the 2025 high seller to Joe Slepicka of Manitoba. To this day, Cleo 1237 still stands on perfect feet. One drawback to always pushing for fertility, is you sometimes get unintentional, early mating’s in the yearling pen. This guys mom got bred before her first birthday, calved 2402, then got re-bred and calved first cycle again. To top this stat off, her great grand mother did the exact same thing, way back when...and they say fertility is lowly heritable. Note the dams teat and udder score, that is another strong suit of this cow family.

Dam is very ideal in her udder design. She’s from a group of Nebraska cows we bought and is an Express daughter-they are nice! Udders, dispositions and fleshing ease is very sound on them all. Full credit goes to Ben and Sherry Andrews of Nebraska, who are responsible for both 2405 and this bull, as they were in dam when we secured a group of cows from the SVR dispersal. We typically don’t notice cows until later in life but this young gem is showing her worth early. Ideal udder, ideal size and type and has calved early with her first two tries at motherhood. Some of the most functional cattle in the Ohlde program are the Focus/Homer sire line which further back, descend from the immortal female maker, Rainmaker 654X!

These Nebraska cows have done well, considering the big environmental shift they’ve had to adapt to. Look here! Both grand dams on the paternal side (Lady Fanny 1631) and maternal side (Ruby Belle 1279) still walk the pastures here at 9 and 13 years respectively. In fact, Ruby Belle 1279 appears twice in the pedigree. This bulls mom is proving fertile as well, with all three of her calves born first cycle. And she’s not just a walking fertility wagon, she put a bull in last years sale and looks to be weaning another sale candidate.

Dam ended up slipping her pregnancy between the time we preg checked and calving, so in keeping with our hard and fast one strike you’re out rule, she had to go to town. She was proving to be one of the very best Winner daughters with her flawless production record, calving first cycle with 5 of 6 calves. Super fertile, very nice uddered and put 4 of her 5 calves into the bull sale. This bull is as royally bred as any to be offered.

Udder quality and fleshing ease may best quantify the strength of traits here. Calving book note reads: “perfect udder” beside the teat and udder scores. I don’t think this cow would loose weight in the dessert-she’s that easy fleshing. If you know her genetics, that comes as no surprise! Dam has raised one other bull for the sale and put one female in the herd. Staying power in both Mayflower and Cassie cow families as they have been around almost 30 years here. If longevity and producing ability of a bulls mother is important, mark this guy. The Cleo 1237 cow will be 14 this spring and she is as sound and productive as can be made. Cows don’t typically get much notice around here until they’ve proven their worth by producing a bunch of calves. This guys mom has done just that. She has put 5 bulls in the sale and has only ever raised two daughters, which are in herd. These Locomotive 1478 daughters are right on the money. If only I had a crystal ball, I would have a bank of semen on that bull. Through time and his daughters, he’s proven to be that good! This bull isn’t the biggest, thickest or heaviest bull...and never will be. BUT he does have a pedigree stacked with tremendous females. One thing he most likely will be, is a bull that has a high probability of raising some extremely functional daughters that will actually fit their environment-the right kind! We can’t stress enough, the importance of stacking good, proven genetics in a pedigree. It’s what creates predictability and consistency. X-Plus, Windy, Eureka, Lodge, 5522 and EXT are all bulls that have made significant, breed wide, positive contributions and are all bulls in this pedigree. The 9 yr old dam of 2491 has been quite productive since coming from Nebraska, calving first cycle every year. If you desire a bull from a moderate framed, big volumed, fertile and easy natured cow, 2491 is that bull.
The imported cows that have had the best sticking ability seem to share the commonality of having Express or Eureka in their bloodlines. Calves up early, sports a beautiful udder, is moderate and beautifully feminine, travels smooth in her gait, is never too fat, nor too thin and consistently drags in a nice calf. - Bulls are efficiency tested not by giving them all they can eat of a high energy feedlot type diet but rather, how well they can do on a high roughage diet. This best mimics the ability to convert lower quality feeds. It is the most similar comparison to the cow/calf stock-mans needs.
- Allowing our cows to be cows; our cattle have evolved over time to be self reliant. They calve easily and calves nurse without assistance. No need for watchful cameras or confinement to corrals and barns. We calve on grass with less than 2% requiring assistance -this includes our first calf heifers. Anything requiring intervention is culled. Perpetuating problems isn’t our practice.

Selling full possession but retaining half interest for future progeny registering ability.
The decision to allow 1850 to be offered for sale came with much deliberating. Every year, we have interest in our older, proven herd-sires and every year we have denied those requests. We don’t throw around descriptive terms lightly or for the sake of marketing, unless they are truly deserving. If you ever heard the term prepotent, that would be the term I’d use to best describe this breeding bull. When an animal is described as prepotent, it is referring
to their strong genetic ability to enforce traits through, onto their progeny, in the most consistent and predictable fashion. This bulls ability is just that. He is the kind that leaves a strong phenotype that can be seen without parentage conformation. His daughters are impeccably sound uddered and like himself, are super sound footed. Docility is next level and he puts that industry forgotten, proper Angus skull on every calf. His sons are masculine and muscular, while his daughters are feminine and right. I have no doubt in this bulls ability to sire quality cattle that would eclipse most bulls being used in purebred herds anywhere. Not only that, most bulls are dead, crippled or long gone before eight years of age. 1850 is still sound, standing on near perfect feet and in good rig on just hay, running with the sale bulls. We have a modest bank of semen on 1850, have and will continue to utilize sons and grand sons in the future. This I guess is how we’ve come to this point of offering such a quality, proven bull.
PUREBRED FEMALES ON OFFER
The last time we offered registered females in a production sale, via public auction, was clear back 14 years ago in 2012. So it goes without saying, we cherish and hold our females tight. This opportunity only comes about because of a circumstance where we were approached by a good friend and long time bull customer wanting to invest in a small group of bred heifer’s. He has since sold his cow herd and is winding down his ranching operation. Therefore, this is the only reason these females are being offered. We considered just buying them back privately, but decided public auction was the best way of determining fair market value for him.
These initial females were and are from the top of the crop of 2019 bred heifer’s. These cattle and all their progeny stayed here and were developed under the same strict management and culling criteria, right along with the rest of the herd. They’ve done a good job placing bulls in past bull sales and females into our replacement pen. The value and worth has been proven out in these females. They are the ones left remaining from the original 10.
We were caught at a weak moment when we agreed to sell these females, so in full transparency, we will be actively bidding on these females as well.

Nice and moderate in her frame, with an outstanding udder, which is typical of all X-Plus 1549 daughters. Jestress 1932 is a result of half sib mating by the X-Plus 1XX30 sire. Dam(1406) was proven out as one of the longest lasting 1XX30 daughters. Cows 1932 and 1907 both share the same great grand dam, the 772 cow.

Excellent fertility as she has calved first cycle all but one year. Super easy fleshing, high capacity cow from the Cassie tribe. Cosmetic note: 1951 damaged and lost one ear as an adult. Very good son sells as lot 2464 and a daughter sells as 2276.

Bit of a broken record, but always worth noting fertility metrics. 1973 has a first cycle calving record with the exception of just one year. She is the dam of our herd sire, GBT Weatherboss W 2237 and also dam of lot 24101. In our mind, this cow is pretty idealistic in type and production ability-the kind you want to be the mother of your herd bull. Dam is still in production and grand dam (1591) is still in production, coming 11 years old.
