Welcome to the 42 nd edition of the Burnett Bull Sale. ank-you for considering our program. Cattle numbers are lowest in recent history. e only way to build the herd is with heifer retention and a successful, healthy rst calf. I believe the cattle industry will have great potential in the next few years. (Hopefully longer) Let’s capitalize during the good years. We have all earned it.

Our o ering this year is similar to the past. We are developing bulls that will go to work for you and hopefully continue to service your herd for years to come. Calving ease, maternal, low maintenance females is what we are producing, their progeny are an added generation of improvement. Many bulls on o er can safely be used on your heifers. Genetics from both sire and dam take the guess work out of what will work and what will not. ere are a few exciting new sires this year that have added some dimension and eye appeal to the pen. Watch for the Sitz Stellar, Alcatraz and VT sired bulls.

Please consider this your invitation to attend the live auction on Saturday April 4. Complimentary lunch will be served at 12 pm and sale at 2 pm. Bulls will be in small groups inside of our sale facility, sale day, for easy inspection of feet and temperament. If you would like to see the bulls and their dams prior to sale, please contact us. Sale will be broadcast online with DLMS. To view videos of the bulls please visit the DLMS website closer to sale time. www.dlms.ca

Rolled Oat Porridge

At a family reunion last August my cousin Phyllis Moore (Hunter) relayed to me a story about her father Howard Hunter that took place at least 70 year ago. I put the story to verse. Then I remembered in the early 1970’s when I first started in my cattle ventures I purchased a group of fancy Black Angus heifers from my Uncle Howard. So some of the genetics in our herd may go way back to cattle that were exhibited at the early Toronto Royal Cattle Shows. Kind of like thinking you could be related to Moses.

Brothers Howard and Murray ranched in the district known as the Springs. homesteaded by Tom Hunter their father, a black smith, well driller and master of many things.

The brothers decided to purchase some breeding stock of the Black Angus kind, so Howard ventured south to Val Marie where Walt Larson he would find.

Larson had sought after breeding stock, taking prizes at the Toronto Royal Howard would select some fancy heifers to graze on their grass and soil.

That afternoon Howard wound his way along the Frenchmans creek dirt trail, to Larsons ranch where black cattle and border collie dogs did prevail.

Walt helped Howard select heifers that would enhance their operation, as it was late Howard stayed the night delaying his homeward destination.

When the morning sun caressed Howards eyes pots and pans started to clatter, the aroma of rolled oat porridge over powered the excitement of the dogs chatter.

Collie dogs excitingly gathered around to greet the new awakening soul, “Do you like oats” Walt Larson bellowed as he dished Howard up a bowl.

Howard eagerly devoured the porridge chasing it down with coffee black and hot, glancing over he inquired “ Mr. Larson , you having porridge? That really hit the spot.”

“Nah, can’t stand the stuff” Walt Larson replied in disgust, “But I brew up a batch every morning for my dogs, they gobble it up with lust.”

On the Show Road

Years ago when I was showing cattle at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado , I happened to stop at the Hotel bar for a beer and there sat Gary Anderson, past president of the Canadian Western Agribition. Gary was at the Show that year being honored as North American Cattleman of the year. Well we shared a couple of beers and told a few stories, and one of the stories Gary shared with me stuck with me, so on my travels home days later I created this poem. Every time I perform this poem at a function – I always remember Gary Anderson – he was one of the real good ones. Miss you Gary.

In this purebred cattle business showing cattle takes you up and down the road a lot. And when you’re away from home you realize what a wonderful family you’ve got.

Now showing cattle takes some selection, preparation, travelling and promotion. And leaving home to tackle the job can cause some a bit of commotion.

On occasion you have to leave the little lady behind to feed cows and keep the home fire burning. On the road, a fella’s mind wanders back to the ranch, cause that’s where his heart is a yearning.

Then you remember you forgot to remember to bring something you were going to remember to bring. Then you remember your wife often reminds you, Dear, your memory is your second shortest thing.

When you arrive at your destination and get the critters settled in it’s great to renew old acquaintances over a beer.

BREEDER’S GUARANTEE: Our breeding program is as important to us as it is to you. All bulls have completed a breeding soundness evaluation. Should any Burnett bull fail to be a satisfactory breeder, we will replace him with a bull as close to quality as possible or a credit given toward another purchase of a Burnett bull. If you have a problem with your bull, please notify us immediately. We will work with you as long as the bull has not been mismanaged.

SEMEN RIGHTS: Burnett Angus and Tarentaise reserve the right to collect semen for in-herd-use, at our expense and buyer convenience, on any bull in the sale.

The new breeders seem fond of the heifers they’re grooming, and you get a glimpse of that bull calf everyone’s been talking about this year.

Now this clipping and blowing and prepping can be tiresome for even this old pup, So a fella’s got to stop and have a beer or two just to keep his fluids up.

When you’re on the road you don’t get those great home cooked meals like macaroni smothered with cheese.

So you have to settle for steak with all the fixings served by a waitress that parades around as pretty as you please.

And staying in a motel at night watching T.V. ain’t no way to spend your stay. So you slip down to the bar for a beer with the boys and explain how your bull is going to kick butt the next day.

INSURANCE: Will be available sale day.

Then you think of your family at home and wonder how their day’s been and if all the chores got done. Remembering now, it’s your wife’s special day, you pick up the phone and explain you’re really not having all that much fun.

“So what can I bring you home dear, after all it’s your birthday, you must want a present of course.” A voice returns on the phone; “ If you don’t hurry home right away, the present you bring might just be a divorce.”

“But golly Dear, all I want to do is bring you home a little present that’s practical Honey. But a divorce, my gosh, I really hadn’t planned on spending that much money.”

DELIVERY: We realize it is not always possible to take your purchase the day of the sale. We will gladly retain your new purchase at the Ranch and look after it until arrangements can be made or delivery made. All USA purchases will be retained at the ranch. We will arrange for health export status to be completed.

LIABILITIES: All persons who attend the Sale do so at their own risk, and the owners along with sales personnel assume no liabilities, legal or otherwise for any accidents that may occur.
