Welcome to the Nelson Ranch

Welcome to the second installment of the Nelson Ranch Private Treaty Catalog! Aside from calving, bull sale season is my second favourite time of year. Not just for the excitement of new purchases or selling my own sale string, but for the people I connect with along the way. From touring fellow breeders’ bull pens and herds, to meeting new faces at sales, to welcoming both new and repeat buyers to Nelson Ranch- it’s always great to connect with people in an industry that remains so strong. Cattle AND people are my passion.

The Nelson Ranch program is built around the females. Over the last 12 years, I have culled the herd hard. The goal has been to develop broody, deep-bodied females with good udders that will stand the test of time. What started as four cows when I was 16 has grown into a herd of around 40 head. It’s a group I am proud to carry the NELSON prefix. This year, I have five bulls for your consideration. They are sired by Durazo, Hooey, Charles, and ZZTop- sires that are working in both the purebred and commercial herds.

This is a strong set of two-year-old bulls backed by some of the top cows in my program. The group offers a mix of horned and polled cattle, with both performance and calving ease. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions. Give me a call and come for a tour of the bulls and cow herd! I look forward to talking cattle with you.

Here’s a bull that grabs your attention. Masimo combines style, performance, and calving ease into a striking yellow package. His dam, Gorgeous, is one of the top cows on the farm. Both of her sons have made the sale pen, and every daughter has been retained as a replacement. She has a perfect udder, is deep and broody in her design, and consistently produces lighter birth weight calves. Masimo’s sire, Durazo, is the best bull on the farm. Durazo hails from Anchor D Ranch and is a son of Garren’s Jezebel, who Danny Skeels has stated is his favorite cow in their entire herd. We love Durazo and the consistency of his calves. Masimo blends the strengths of both his sire and dam and should sire gorgeous daughters and big steers.

Nelson Felicity

If you’re looking to add pounds at weaning, Melvin is your guy. He’s long as a freight train, well-muscled, and masculine in his design. Melvin is smooth polled, posted a moderate birth weight, and weaned off at an impressive 808 lbs. His dam, Felicity, has sons working for Carver and Tracy Johnson and for Devon and Caitlin Heck, along with a daughter who is one of my favorite second-calvers. This is a performance-driven bull backed by a proven cow family.

Nelson Fall in Love

One word comes to mind with this bull: longevity. Mushu’s dam has the best udder on the farm- excellent attachment and ideal teat size that any calf can easily nurse from. His maternal granddam remained in production until 14 years of age. On the top side of his pedigree, his paternal granddam, Rendezvous MS Para 591Y, is still working at 15 years old. Mushu should leave you females built to last for years, while also adding performance and a dark red hide from his paternal grandsire, Charles, along with docility and muscle expression from his maternal grandsire, Austin. Don’t let his birth weight deter you - I think very highly of this bull and believe he will sire outstanding calves.

Another Durazo son, Marvelous offers loads of hair and pigment. He’s a favorite in the bull pen thanks to his deep rib and muscular hindquarter. The bedding pack was a little deep the day of pictures, but I assure you he stands on great feet. His dam, Harvest Moon, is a moderate-framed cow who is quickly becoming a strong producer. We’re expecting another Durazo calf from her this spring because we’ve been so pleased with this genetic combination. This bull has the versatility to work in any program.

BEE Hooey 780H

Nelson Kosmo 14K

Nelson Harriet 5H

Marty is a polled/scurred bull out of a beautiful young cow, Kosmo 14K. Kosmo is very maternal with a perfect udder, and she raised a gorgeous Hooey heifer calf last year. Marty’s sire, ZZTop, was our heifer bull in 2023 and did an excellent job moderating birth weights. While Marty himself posted a 92 lb birth weight, his siblings have consistently ranged from 70–80 lbs. Marty is not a true heifer bull, but I do believe he offers calving ease potential.

To my biggest supporters:

A huge thank you isn’t enough to begin to show how grateful I am for my parents, Tracy and Melanie, and for their support and help throughout the years. They have put countless hours into caring for my cattle while I work off-farm at U of C. Without them, this herd and dream of mine wouldn’t be possible. And my sister, Quinn deserves a shoutout. Quinn moved back to Alberta last year after spending 7 years in Victoria. The whole family is so glad to have her sense of humor and caring personality closer to home.

To my 2025 buyers, thank you for your support in my program!
