2026 Wishbone Simmental

SIMMENTAL Wishbone

We would like to thank you for your interest in our program and are excited to offer what we think is a very deep set of high quality bulls. What a year 2025 was to be in the cattle industry. Most of us enjoyed record high sales on our calves and 2026 is shaping up to be another amazing year. There has never been a time when a pound of weight on a calf has been worth more. We have seen a lot of differing opinions lately about cattle size. I wanted to present some ideas and numbers on what I think. While I firmly believe as a commercial cattleman we need to keep mature cow size in check, I think there are strategies to be more selective and intentional with our replacement creation and selection that allow us to optimize and push forward the pay weight of our calves. I think we do the majority of genetic purchasing tailored for the 15% of the cattle we retain and leave a lot of money on the table on the 85% we sell.

For easy math, let’s figure a cow herd of 100 head. To maintain that 100 head most operations will select 15 replacement heifers to retain. That leaves 85 head of calves to market. If we select a bull to optimize our mature cow size on the 15 heifers, let’s say he has a weaning weight EPD of 77 which would be the breed average. Let’s compare that to selecting a bull in the top 15% of the breed who would have a weaning weight EPD of 90. Meaning with the same environmental conditions the second bulls calves should on average wean 13 lbs heavier than bull 1. On 85 marketed calves that is 1105 lbs of pay weight. Figuring conservatively in this market a pound is worth $3. That would make an additional $3315 of income with no additional inputs. If a person took $1000 of that profit and purchased 20 units of sexed female semen from a maternally focused bull to AI to your best cows, you would still create the optimum replacement females you need and conservatively pocket $2,315 of profit.

With that in mind you will find this offering of bulls to average an 84 weaning weight EPD and a 91 Terminal Index EPD, averaging top 30% and 20% of the breed respectively. In addition many of these bulls come with the RightChoice ATM badge. If you are in the market for a maternally focused bull, rest assured they are in the offering as well. We understand the massive investment a bull is to your operation, and we appreciate you considering making that investment in our genetics. Rest assured years of planning, evaluating, and refining have gone into this group of cattle. We believe strongly in creating structurally sound, phenotypically appealing, and genomically marketable cattle. Finding cattle that check all those boxes is very difficult, but it is a pursuit we continue to refine. We are confident that you will find something to fit and improve your own genetics in this offering. Thank you for taking the time to evaluate the cattle and we look forward to working with you into the very promising future.

God

Welcome

Lot 1 at the side of his dam on August 24.

This flush was one we that had a lot of planning behind it and we couldn’t wait to see it. It did not disappoint! 001 has been the physical standout of a great group from the start. When his DNA came back and we saw how elite he is on paper coupled with his physical dominance, we were tempted to just keep him exclusively for ourselves. But here he is custom made for the modern beef industry. Top third calving ease with top 1% WW YW $GN Marb API and TI; he will produce profitable cattle for every sector of the industry. Add in his nearly unlimited mating flexibility (No Beacon, Eagle, Essential, Galileo, C4 or Sure Fire) we truly believe he has breed improving potential.

44 VICTORY

We have really wanted to use Iconic for several years and never got around to it. When we saw Victory we thought he was the best Iconic son we had seen and his figures certainly are elite. We knew right away we had to flush 266K to make some F1’s. It was a homerun; all 6 of these brothers will propel a herd in a positive direction. The 2 sisters of the flush have donor potential written all over them.

This bull was the greenest all summer long. But by fall, every time we went through the bulls we would say who the heck is that and almost every time it was 012. Flawless structure coupled with a great look from the side make him unique in a loaded flush.

M4 W/B RED EYE 364L

Red Eye was our pick of the Gold Bullion Sale in 2024 he had a great data set coupled with a phenotype we could get behind. His first calf crop has been great. The replacement heifer pen is loaded with his daughters.

ASA QUICK REFERENCE TO EPD s , INDEXES AND $VALUES

EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES (EPDS): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and -5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing in what units they are expressed. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, sire A would be expected to sire 15 pounds more weaning weight than sire B. If calving ease was the trait, sire A would be expected to sire 15 percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if sire B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we would expect sire A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes, visit www.simmental.org.

Listed below are the units in which ASA EPDs are expressed:

ALL-PURPOSE INDEX (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See $ Indexes for more details.)

BACK FAT (BF): Inches of carcass backfat at 475 days.

BIRTH WEIGHT (BW): Pounds of birth weight.

CALVING EASE (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers.

CARCASS WEIGHT (CW): Pounds of carcass weight at 475 days.

STAYABILITY (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cow herd at 6 years of age.

DOCILITY (DOC): Percent of offspring receiving a disposition score of 1 (docile).

MATERNAL CALVING EASE (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters.

MILK (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.

MARBLING (MARB): Carcass marbling score at 475 days.

MATERNAL WEANING WEIGHT (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.

RIBEYE AREA (REA): Square inches of carcass ribeye at 475 days.

TERMINAL INDEX (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See TI for more details.)

WEANING WEIGHT (WW): Pounds of weaning weight.

YEARLING WEIGHT (YW): Pounds of yearling weight.

YIELD GRADE (YG): Carcass yield grade score at 475 days.

$ INDEXES: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide pieces of the economic puzzle. This is where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on integrated commercial production. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: ALL-PURPOSE INDEX (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.

TERMINAL INDEX (TI): Evaluates sires for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.

USING API AND TI: First, determine which index to use; if you are keeping replacements use API, if not, use TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr.=$6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed.

For more detailed information about EPDs and $indexes, visit: www.simmental.org Important disclaimer: DO NOT compare index values of purebreds of different breeds, hybrids of different breed composition or purebreds with hybrids - our system was not developed to make valid comparison among these groups. Therefore, you must first determine the breed and breed composition appropriate for your herd and use index values to compare animals within that population.

TERS LEOPOLD 316L

We have really set out to be a program that offers a high quality outcross pedigree option to many of today’s popular lines. Leopold fit that goal for us; he has no Beacon, Eagle, Epic, Essential, Galileo or Sugar C4 in his pedigree. He didn’t prove to be the calving ease sire we hoped. However, these bulls on a set of mature cows will undoubtedly increase the quality and pay weight of your calves.

Everyone always wants to know Wendy’s favorite bull. Because if you know Wendy, she is very particular in what she likes. Outside of Lot 1, this has Wendy’s pick for the best phenotyped bull. He is the most moderately framed of all the ET calves and I think his females will be killer good.

SCHOOLEY KROWN 28K

This is the second year we have had a great set of Krown calves. We went to Iowa last February and purchased an ET brother of Krown called Mahomes. We really think these are going to be great cattle that are built to add pounds but not mature height.

MORE ABOUT BCHF...

DNA Test for Bovine Congestive Heart Failure (BCHF) Risk Now Available. A test estimating a genomic prediction for risk for development of Bovine Congestive Heart Failure (BCHF) is now available.

This is not an IGS prediction but molecular breeding value based on the Simplot and Neogen partnership studying heart failure in feedlot cattle. Because this is a molecular breeding value, results will be based solely on the DNA marker information and will not include other pertinent information that goes into EPD like pedigree, breed, and performance records. The test returns a molecular breeding value for risk of progeny developing heart scores correlated to BCHF (lower number is better).

CDI/NF HONOR GUARD 267H

We will calve our first daughters out of him this year and they look great so far. This set of bulls just like last year are high quality on hoof and paper.

W/B NIGHT GUARD Paternal brother to Lot 37.

BSUM 052H Sire of Lots 38-41.

This cow is going to get flushed this year. She has had 4 calves at our house to 4 different bulls and every one has been fantastic. This guy is a perfect example of what she does, moderate framed, easy fleshing cattle with a great set of data.

BSUM 052H

He has definitely entered the proven category for us. We have calved daughters, sold steers and bulls and they have all been highly marketable, high quality livestock.

BSUM 3136L

We needed a good heifer cleanup bull and thought he was a high quality option from our friends at Black Summit. They all came easy and grew well. If you want some really good lower percentage bulls, these guys fit the bill.

OMF EPIC E27

OMF Epic needs no introduction. We love the females and the bulls out of him. They are moderate framed, easy fleshing and sound structured cattle.

W/B 047N

This guy is an absolute phenotype stand out but he does not like to hold still so you will have to come see him in person.

CONNEALY COMMERCE Sire of Lot 49.

We truly believe in crossbreeding and we feel the need to implement purebred genetics back into the mix in order to keep the hybrid vigor going. The Angus division is small but mighty this year for us. It’s also one we plan on expanding in the future to meet everyone’s cross breeding needs.
