Genetic Destination 3rd Annual Bull Sale

Lot 3 - sire

Lot 31-33 and 43-47 now registered

Friday, March 8, 2013 - 1 P.M. - Grenfell, SK

Welcome to the Third annual “Genetic Destination” Bull Sale!

Welcome! We have had a busy year and are excited with this year’s offering of bulls and also excited to invite you to the Ranch for this year’s sale. With the closure of Heartland Regina late last spring we wanted to digest the situation and make the best possible decision for ourselves and you - our customer base. We felt it only fitting to come back to the Ranch and have the sale at home. The bulls will be housed in pens for viewing and then sold via a video format in our heated sale barn.

Here at MFR we drive our cow herd with calving ease bulls with good birth to weaning weight spreads. The bulls are all maternally bred because we believe in the strenght of our cow family’s that are the building blocks to our genetics. From a producer standpoint, we try to make real world conditions in our operation; utilizing a rotational grazing practice throughout the summer and grazing stock piled grass and swath grazing late into the fall. Our cattle know how to use forages and our bulls are bred to be moderate, easy fleshing and fertile.

There certainly continues to be some opportunity in the cattle business with the continued decrease in the North American cow herd and we would love to put you in the driver seat with your next herdsire. We would like to take the time to thank our past customers as your success is our success. I want to stress how important it is to us to make sure you understand that we are not in this business to sell you just any bull; we want to personally fit “the right bull” into your program. If we can be of any assistance, please don’t hesitate to call. Happy customers make life long friends and we welcome you in joining us on the journey!

Please join us sale day Friday, March 8!

Sincerely,

(306) 697-2945 house (306) 697-7844 Scott (306) 697-7835 Doug www.mccormackfamilyranch.com

How Much Can You Afford For A Bull?

We’re all probably guilty of looking at bull costs as a one-time expense – the way we view feed, for instance. In reality, however, a bull is a four- to five-year investment.

One of the interesting things about this analysis is that the average service cost per cow – when all costs are taken into account – is higher than most people would calculate. For example, using conservative production assumptions, the average service cost for a $4,500 bull that is turned out with 25 cows/year is $63.14/cow. Interestingly, however, bull cost is not a huge driver in that equation. The difference of paying $3,750 for a bull and paying $5,250 for a bull doesn’t affect the service cost per cow that dramatically.

In fact, the difference between a $3,750 bull and a $5,250 bull only moves the average cost per cow serviced by $9/cow. When one looks at today’s price levels and value differences, the higher-priced bulls are actually a whole lot better investment than the lower-priced bulls.

If a $3,750 bull with the assumptions I used was turned out with 30 cows, his service cost was $45.12/cow. If he’s turned out with 20 cows, that jumps to $67.68/cow. Another way of looking at the impact of bull price is the impact of weaning weight. How much additional weaning weight would be required to justify paying $5,250 vs. $3,750/bull, assuming all other attributes remained the same? The difference was only 12 lbs. of weaning weight!

2012 EPD Breed Average

“Expected Progeny Differences” or EPD’s are one of the many useful tools to help you in bull selection. EPD’s incorporate the individual animal with its averaged ancestry performance. EPD’s do not compare across cattle breeds, they are individually based per breed. EPD’s indicate a probable variance above or below breed average for that trait for a given bull’s progeny.

What our customers are saying...

We bought our first two bulls from the McCormack’s in 2011. We were very satisfied in the breeding ability of these two bulls as yearlings and we are happy with the performance of the calves from these two bulls. But as bull buying goes, we only have one of these bulls remaining in our herd and he has turned out to be an outstanding herdsire. We purchased another bull in 2012 and look forward to seeing his first calf crop in 2013. Scott has always been very helpful in finding the right bull to match our cow herd. We will be back at McCormack’s bull sale in 2013, looking for another herdsire.

Terry & Loretta Young, Earl Grey, SK

We run 180-200 commercial Red Angus Simmental cross cows in south west Sask. We have bought bulls from the McCormack’s since 2008, when they were selling at the Proudly Western Bull sale at Whitewood, SK. We had bulls go down with injuries this past spring and Scott helped us out by lending us a mature bull. We liked the bull and ended up keeping him.

We really liked 96X at the 2011 Ashworth Farms/Tessier Farms Bull Sale and we truly believe all good bulls must come from a proven female. 96X is a maternal sibling to TESS Rampage, co-owned with Shane Kaufman. 96X is definitely heifer approved with small, vigorous calves that have lots of grow, excellent temperaments and Heatwave hair. Look for major fertility in 96X’s sons and daughters with a 45 cm scrotal at 12 months of age.

A sale feature! 21Z had only a 71 lb. birthweight with an actual weaning weight of 725lbs on Sept. 1. 21Z has all the tools - big top, huge scrotal, awesome rib shape and Heatwave hair. RLA 721T or “Stormy” as we like to call him, was born out of my favorite black baldy cow 931J. Stormy is a total outcross, homozygous polled, hetro black bull. 721T exhibits extreme body length and is one massive middled individual. His mellow disposition and character are hard to come by. We are very impressed with how consistently he bred for us on a wide variety of cows. Stormy was sold through our 2008 sale and we are very fortunate the Blair family has allowed us to use him in our program.

A definite sale feature! This big bodied “Stormy” son comes to you from the Opal cow family, who needs no introduction. Perfect Storm is perfectly haired, smooth made and extremely thick. 62Z had a moderate birthweigh which makes him ideal for the heifer pen or your best cows. Perfect Storm will blow you away!

We retained 833U and have 4 full sisters in production. Protege sires moderate, thick, blood red offspring who are very maternal.

Another sale feature! Power Pack will impress the serious cattleman. 74Z is deep, dark red, hairy and big nutted. His dam continues to impress at 12 years of age. The longevity is built into this awesome calf!

42Z is one of those special ones from his outcross homo polled/homo black pedigree to his maternal prowess and stellar look. Not often will you find a purebred Maine bull with a 65 lb. birthweight and 700 lb actual weaning weight. - Sale Terms & Conditions -

Terms - The terms of the sale are cash or cheque payable at par at sale location unless satisfactory credit arrangements have been made prior to the sale. The right of property shall not pass until after settlement is made. McCormack Family Ranch reserves the right to require a certified cheque as settlement before releasing any sale cattle. Should the purchaser fail to settle for his purchase, McCormack Family Ranch reserves full power to resell the animal to the best advantage, either publicly or privately, without further notice. Any loss arising from such resale together with keep and all other expenses shall be payable by the defaulter. All settlements must be made with the clerks of the sale before any cattle will be released. The owners and sale staff have the right to refuse bids from anyone who has a previous record of default in payment and/or who has not made credit arrangements prior to the sale with the owners and/or sale management.

Bid - Every animal consigned to the sale must be sold by auction. No by-bidding will be permitted. Each animal will be sold to the highest bidder.

Disputes - In cases of disputes, bidding will be re-opened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision in such matters will be final.

Purchaser’s Risk - Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. Announcements from the auction block will take precedence over printed matter in the catalogue. Buyers are therefore cautioned to pay attention to any such announcements.

Certificate of Registry - The proper registration or recordation paper, as the case may be, will be duly transferred and furnished to the buyer for each animal after settlement has been made.

Shipping - Assistance will be given in making shipment after the sale, but sale management or seller assumes no risk.

Expenses incurred are the responsibility of the purchaser. Purchasers are requested to furnish shipping instructions when making settlement.

Guarantee - All animals will carry standard breeding guarantee as specified by the applicable Canadian Breed Association. At no time shall the seller’s liability exceed the purchased price of the animal.

Exception to Guarantee - In cases where the animal is subjected to any hormonal or surgical reproduction techniques after the sale, the guarantee shall be null and void. In the cases of bulls, they are guaranteed to breed naturally according to applicable Canadian Breed Association guarantee, but no guarantee is given that semen from any bull will freeze.

Health - It is the buyer’s responsibility to determine health requirements for importing any animal into his province or state.

Accidents - Although every precaution will be taken to protect the safety and comfort of buyers, neither the sale management, auctioneer, or association assumes any responsibility in this matter and disclaims any liability legal or otherwise in the event of accident of loss of property.

Rights and Obligations - The above terms and conditions of the sale shall constitute a contract between the buyer and the seller and be equally binding to both. Resale of animals following purchase in this sale shall constitute a separate transaction and the rights and the terms and conditions for this sale do not cover obligations of the two parties connected there to.
