Mary Blest are you, Mary who believed. Thus we praise you along with Elizabeth (cfr. LK 1:45). Blest are you, Mother of our Lord Jesus and of the Church. (…) To your motherly heart, Mary we especially entrust those who are oppressed by suffering and sorrow: the sick and handicapped, men and women experiencing difficult marriages, the children of families in conflict, men with large debts, the unemployed, the alienated and imprisoned. How many tears, how much fear, how much darkness on this journey! May the Cross of your Son shine before them as the symbol of God’s Infinite mercy. Reveal to them Christ’s spirit, which enables them to conquer evil with good (cfr. Rom 12:21), to give new meaning to life with courageous love. Merciful Mary, accept every unselfish act of a good Samaritan, every hour offered voluntarily in service of a suffering neighbour! 33
In the same way we commend to you men in the full bloom of life, men and women with family responsibilities, committed to the community of the nation. Let them find in the Good News light and strength for their own ideas and decisions, guided by a mature Christian conscience: fathers and mothers, teachers and doctors, scientists and politicians, police, soldiers and all those who work for the good of the community. Reveal to them the shining value of truth, the great good of justice, the silent splendour of altruism! We invoke your motherly protection, O Mary, also for the younger generations: infants, boys and girls, young men and women. Lead them gently, step by step, along the path of Christian responsibility to themselves and to the community: the courageous and the strong, the enterprising and active, as well as those who are silent, who hesitate, who are indecisive, those who laugh often and those who are always serious. Do not let the light go out in their hearts, the light of those ideals which give the life of man its true meaning. May no one neglect them: neither young people themselves, nor anyone else. Mother, bless the youth that they may be 34
able to demand much of themselves and give much to others, to resist the temptations of a world of pleasures and to promise to promote the good of their neighbour. (…) Mother of the Church, reveal again to the People of God of this nation the way to discover and promote new vocations to the priesthood and to religious life. (…) Christ, Good Shepherd of your flock, welcome in your Mother’s heart all our faith, our good will and our sincere dedication. Amen.
