Ministries
ALTAR CARE Members of this ministry prepare and maintain the church and its furnishings, vestments and vessels for worship. They also assist with special projects and enjoy fellowship with one another as they serve. Altar servers prepare the sanctuary before Mass and place everything away after the Liturgy. The altar server participates at Mass by praying and singing with all in the assembly. C.A.N. — CHRISTIAN ASSISTANCE NETWORK This ministry sprung from a coalition of 32 area churches, dedicated to feeding the hungry in the Yuba-Sutter area since 1984. C.A.N. operates a “service center,” which distributes food, clothing and diapers to individuals and families who are referred there by local churches or welfare 2
organizations. There are a variety of ways to be involved in this important community ministry. Contact: Sandy Duncan, 530-671-4786, duncan.sandy@comcast.net CATECHESIS OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD (AGES 3-12) THE MISSION Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a distinct approach to catechesis through which children as young as age 3 cultivate deep, lifelong relationships with Christ and the Church. Originating in Rome in the 1950s, Catechesis of the Good Shepherd engages children with ageappropriate, hands-on materials based on Sacred Scripture and the Liturgy. THE RATIONALE “Though you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned, you have revealed them to the childlike” (Mt. 11:25). While beginning to educate children’s minds in the faith, at least as importantly, Catechesis of the Good Shepherd helps them cultivate a loving relationship with God in their most formative years.
THE APPROACH “Let the children come to me and do not prevent them, for the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to such as these” (Lk. 18:16). Young children learn best by actively engaging their bodies and all their senses. In Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, they work with beautiful, skillfully crafted materials. Even the youngest children immerse themselves in this quiet retreat-like environment. Mission: The Chamoru Ministry, aware of our identity as members of the Catholic Church of St. Isidore, commit ourselves to: 1. Foster the growth of Chamorus Christian faith and traditions. 2. Promote fellowship and unity among the people of the Mariana Islands. 3. Instill camaraderie among our families in the parish, creating a family-oriented group working together in harmony for the St. Isidore Church and its mission.
4. Respond to the spiritual needs of our members and underprivileged through charitable activity and advocacy intervention. 5. Showcase and reflect our culture, and contribute to the worship and celebration of the parish at large. Goals: 1. EUCHARISTIC APOSTLES OF THE DIVINE MERCY The Eucharistic Apostles of the Divine Mercy (EADM), under the patronage of “The Entirely Perfect Virgin Holy Mary” of Guadalupe, is a Roman Catholic, nonprofit lay outreach ministry of the Congregation of Marians of the Immaculate Conception, St. Stanislaus Kostka Province, headquartered in Stockbridge, Mass. Our Mission 1. Profess and proclaim the truth of the Real Presence of Jesus in the Most Holy Eucharist, and to promote, insofar as possible, Perpetual Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament and the hourly offering of the Divine Mercy Chaplet for the dying. 2. Bring to a hurting world the Divine Mercy message and devotion according to the revelations granted to the Church through St. Faustina Kowalska. 3. Form small faith groups, called cenacles, to meet weekly: a) to pray for and encourage vocations to the priesthood and the religious life; b) to pray and work for an end to the scourge of abortion in the world; c) t o experience the fullness of our Catholic faith through the study of Sacred Scripture, the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the Diary of St. Faustina Kowalska. 4. E ncourage members in the exercise of the faith through
spiritual and corporal works of mercy, and to help people to become sensitive to the gift and beauty of all life, especially through care for the “lepers” of today — the rejected, the lonely, the disabled, the elderly and the dying. EADM meet in small groups (in imitation of the meetings of the first Christians in the cenacle) to have fellowship, deepen their Catholic faith and the knowledge of the Divine Mercy message; share their struggles and joys in applying it to life in the family and workplace; and to live out this faith together by performing the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. More than being just prayer groups, Bible studies or service organizations, cenacles are a healthy combination of all of these. They are a way for us to deepen our understanding and experience of the Divine Mercy, which our Lord invites us to exercise toward all others. The Eucharistic Apostles of the Divine Mercy meet on the third Monday of each month (except during November and December) in the Parish Hall Conference Room at 6:30 p.m. Contact: Cathy Marsh, 530-755-1536, marsh95901@gmail.com EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are called upon to share the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ with St. Isidore’s parishioners at Mass, in our
local hospitals and nursing homes, and to those who are bound to their homes. Ministry is never self-seeking — but giving, and it is the kind of giving in which one loves the persons one gives to. GROUNDS CARE Volunteers who participate in this ministry contribute their talents and expertise in renovation, building, and maintaining the parish and school buildings, equipment, landscaping and grounds. Contact: Bob Cortese, 530-673-1573, bcortese@stisidore-yubacity.org GRUPO DE ORACION Through prayer, people come together as children of God to support each other and renew their faith as God’s people. But we also praise God, Who is worthy of praise, and we reflect on Scripture so as not to forget that in God, everything is good. All are invited to gather together as brothers and sisters as we pray for the needs of the people of God, with the help of the Holy Spirit. GUADALUPANAS Sociedades Guadalupanas (Guadalupe Societies) are religious associations organized by Mexican-American Catholic women to provide leadership in social concerns and perform works of charity. The organization’s name derives from Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas. Sociedades Guadalupanas have helped fostering female development and leadership in the Catholic Church. Women may establish sociedades in a parish by gaining the approval of the pastor, and they often recruit members on an informal basis. However, individuals may also join by approaching the group to ask for admission. Still others become members due to a familial devotion to Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, including a tradition of familial involvement in a sociedad that has been passed from one generation to the next. Working-class and poor women have often made up the bulk of membership in Sociedades Guadalupanas — recently, however, younger and more educated members have joined. Despite the preponderance of women in the sociedades, a small number of men, teenagers,

a few Anglos and entire families also belong. Indeed, a male parishioner, José Navarro, was the first president of the first known sociedad in San Antonio, which was started around 1912 by Fr. Juan Maiztegui, the first chaplain at Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel, which later became Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. Contact: Cora Garcia, 530-713-3176, corasbeauty@live.com KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS St. Isidore’s Knights of Columbus is a fraternal service organization of men, founded under the four core principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. This organization provides men with a vehicle for building up the parish community and family life with an emphasis on family, youth, church, council and community activities. Open to any practicing Catholic man over 18. Knights undertake a large variety of service and social activities. LEGION OF MARY Legion of Mary is an apostolic organization of lay people who work towards the sanctification of their members, and provide spiritual support and Holy Communion to parishioners who are homebound, hospitalized and in nursing homes. Contact: Pat Whitten, 530-673-2613, jerry_pat@comcast.net MARRIAGE ADVOCATE After meeting for an initial visit with a parish priest, engaged couples meet with a sponsor couple on three occasions. Through discussion and a personality inventory, the couple identify personal traits that could affect their marriage relationship. They discuss the sacramental nature of marriage and its importance as a lifelong covenant. Contact: Paige Westlake, 530-673-1573, pwestlake@stisidore-yubacity.org MINISTRY TO THE HOMELESS REST- R egional Emergency Shelter Team Regional Emergency Shelter Team or REST, is an organization based on the teachings of Jesus Christ that partners with participating churches, congregations, and other community and faith-based organizations to provide cold weather shelter and warm meals to families, single women and couples who are homeless in the Yuba-Sutter area. REST targets those who are seeking emergency housing
due to their situation of being homeless or what is termed as “precariously housed” in the Yuba-Sutter region. People who are termed “precariously housed” reside in vacant buildings, cars or dwellings where more than one family coexists. The numbers are acknowledged by many to be understated, but the conclusion can be clearly drawn that the homeless challenge for our community is growing. What’s more, except for women escaping domestic violence situations or those eligible for substance abuse rehabilitation programs, there are currently very few shelter alternatives for homeless single women in the Yuba-Sutter region. MUSIC MINISTRY The Music Ministry provides music for parish liturgical celebrations. Those who love to sing wholeheartedly are invited to join the parish choir. If you have a musical background and can contribute instrumental skills, and especially pray about sharing that with your congregation, we need your talent. Those who have been blessed with the gift of a musical voice or an ability to play an instrument are encouraged to share that gift with the parish family by joining one of the choirs or volunteering to lead music during Mass. Instrumentalists We need musicians (piano, organists, brass, woods or string instruments) who can accompany a choir or cantor(s). St. Isidore Choir The St. Isidore Choir rehearses every Wednesday from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Church. New members just need to join us at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. Youth Choir The Youth Choir practices one half hour before the Sunday 5 p.m. Mass in the Music Room. PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration — open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, where parishioners faithfully keep their assigned hours every week or serve as substitute adorers. Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration refreshes the soul of participants. We are always in need of new adorers. Parishioners are needed to ensure at least one adorer is present at all times. Substitute adorers are also needed to be on call for emergencies. The RCIA process welcomes the unbaptized person to the family of Jesus Christ. children grow to love God with their whole heart, mind and soul, and to love their neighbor as themselves through learning and living the teachings of Jesus Christ and His Church. THE PROGRAM Family Faith Formation is designed to assist parents in evangelizing their children. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, it is the primary responsibility of the parents to teach their children the love of God and the life of the Church. We seek to guide and support parents in evangelizing and forming their children through God’s Word and a family experience of learning and growing together; to respond faithfully to God’s call to relationship through listening, praying, reflecting, sharing and deepening their relationship with God; developing the values to become true witnesses, committed to offer services to their parents, families, neighbor and the Catholic Church. We pray and work to spread greater awareness for all vocations, especially vocations to the priesthood and religious life to answer the needs in today’s world. • Confirmation Preparation Confirmation preparation is a two-consecutive-year process for students starting in seventh grade or above. All youth need to be baptized in the Catholic Church (a copy of the baptismal certificate is needed) and have celebrated the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Eucharist in order to enroll in this preparation.
• First Communion Preparation Preparation for First Communion is a process of two consecutive years for the students. This sacrament is received at the end of second grade, starting their preparation in first grade. Those who are older have to be in a First Communion Preparation for two successive years in order to receive the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion. All children need to have been baptized in the Catholic Church to register in this program. Parents are expected to support the children in their preparation of the sacraments, and attend the parent classes. •R CIA Adapted for Children and Teens If you have a child (age 7- 17) who has not been baptized or has not been attending Family Faith Formation sessions, and he/she would like to complete his/her initiation into the Church, this is the process called RCIA Adapted for Children and Teens. Every situation is unique and we can help your child (who has reached the age of reason — 7 years of age), discern his/her next step. It starts with an inquiry process then a plan is put in place for us to assist you and your child on their faith journey. Volunteers are needed in a variety of support roles. RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY 40 DAYS FOR LIFE The 40 Days for Life Ministry participates in campaigns to promote respect for life. The 40 Days for Life Ministry plans events to help foster a pro-life awareness in the parish. They seek to educate parishioners about right-to-life issues, as well as promote events that celebrate the right-to-life. The 40 Days for Life Ministry is dedicated to defending the dignity of human life, from conception to natural death, as well as providing educational information to our parish and the local community. (Individual and family stewardship opportunities exist as part of this ministry.) Contact: Maureen Guth, 530-713-8579, mm@guthchangaris.com SOCIETY OF SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL Our Mission The mission of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul is to provide opportunities for our members (Vincentians) to grow spiritually by serving others through person-to-person encounters. How We Serve The Society of St. Vincent de Paul assists those in need with food, clothing, rent and utility bills, furniture, household goods, etc. We operate a food locker, Tuesday to Thursday 9:15-11:15 a.m., to provide food and clothing. Each request for financial assistance is followed up with a home visit by a team of volunteers. The volunteers 10
are the eyes, ears and hands of Jesus and are an example of His love and concern for all of our brothers and sisters. On the home visit, they gather information on the needs of the family, assess the situation, and offer assistance when appropriate. These home visits close with an invitation to prayer if the persons are open to that offer. St. Vincent de Paul meetings The Society has monthly meetings on the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in the SVdP building, which is located behind the church on the north side. The meetings are designed to increase the spirituality of our members with a time of reflection and meditation. Our service is making parishioners and guests feel welcome and comfortable as we gather for our Eucharistic celebration. Our ushers are able to see the presence of Christ in each person as they arrive. Qualities of an usher This ministry is open to all parishioners — men and women, senior citizen, parent and teenager. Ushers are friendly people who welcome all ages and nationalities. Their faith enables them to see Christ’s presence in individuals and in the gathered community of believers. Ushers
are honest and dependable. They can handle emergency situations with courage and composure. They carry a dignity about themselves even when performing menial tasks. YOUNG LADIES INSTITUTE The Christian principles of charity and love define the Young Ladies Institute (YLI). The emblem and sign of the Order is the cross within the laurel leaf, signifying that only in this symbol of man’s redemption can we expect the crowning victory of immortality. On Sept. 5, 1887, in San Francisco, Annie M. Sweeney, her sister Mary E. Richardson and Emily Coogan founded the Young Ladies’ Institute to provide material support to a young woman who contracted tuberculosis. The goal of members is to educate themselves on what to look for in the people they meet who may be struggling with depression. Each meeting reflects the virtues of our founders, the golden links to the Christian virtues faith, hope and charity. The principles of unity, sisterly love and protection are the diamonds that give brilliance to our Order, for they embody our love and concern for each other. YOUTH GROUP High School This ministry offers spiritual, social and service events focused on inviting young adults to live a more active faith life. It challenges them to examine various aspects of their faith and to grow in their understanding of the teaching of the Catholic Church.
