Dear Members, I trust that this letter finds you well and that your lives have returned to a more stable routine. Typically, just as we all felt the relief of restrictions being lifted, we have been hit by fuel shortages that have affected

work schedules in so many areas. Hopefully, by the time you read this, the matter will have been resolved. I would like to say huge congratulations to everyone who joined us in London last month for the

Premier Trophy Awards event. What a spectacular day we all had! It was so satisfying to be able to stage an event on this scale once more and be able meet people in person. This was our first event in

almost two years and was long overdue. Credit goes to everyone who achieved an award on the day, and there were some truly outstanding projects submitted across the seven categories. It was both pleasing and encouraging to see our Apprentice of the Year winners picking up their awards. They are a credit to our sector and I am sure they will have great careers ahead. Further details and photographs of the event can be seen in this issue. Looking ahead, the application forms for the 2022 Trophy Awards and Apprentice competitions are now available to download from our website. Additionally, in light of circumstances, we have extended the time period for job entries to cover any jobs completed between 1 January 2020 and 31 December 2021. Entries must be received at PDA Head Office by 7 January 2022. We look forward to seeing the shortlisted entrants in London on 7 July next year! A new version of our updated Health and Safety Handbook will be launched later this month as a mobile app. This gives us greater scope to update it quickly if any legislation or information changes. All the information on how to access the app will be sent out later this month in our e-newsletter. Also featured in this issue is information and a booking form for our National Networking Event at the Waterfront Hilton Hotel in Liverpool on 19 and 20 November. The HQ team and I hope that as many of you as possible will be able to join us, it will be fantastic to have a catch up over what promises to be a great weekend. At the Saturday Gala Dinner, we will be announcing the PDA Apprentice Wallpaper Hanger of the Year winners. Our last networking event was in November 2019, which really does seem like an age away now, it’s been too long since we got together and sometimes, one can have enough of staring into screens for virtual meetings. Our AGM will follow the same format as last year. To facilitate this, you will shortly receive a series of e-newsletters asking you to vote for the nominees who have put their names forward for election to our Management Board. The final newsletter will be sent out on Friday 26 November with the announcement of results. It will also include my annual CEO’s report. If anyone has any concerns or ideas that you would like to discuss, please do get in touch with me. We hope to see some of you at the National Painting and Decorating Show this year at the Coventry Building Society Arena (formerly Ricoh Arena) in Coventry on 23 and 24 November. We will be on Stand 91, so please do drop by and have a chat with us. In the meantime do remain vigilant with ongoing Covid-19 precautions, although things have much improved, it is still very much around.

ASSOCIATION NEWS
ADVICE for
our Members BEST PRACTICE RECRUITING NEW STAFF THE RIGHT WAY AS REPORTED IN the news, labour shortages continue to affect many sectors, more recently driven by the pandemic and Brexit. Build UK, for example, has urged that to drive the economic recovery post COVID 19, the construction industry will need to overcome its longstanding skills gaps. As an initiative to encourage recruitment into the industry, Build UK has launched Open Doors to take place from 4–9 October 2021. This offers a unique chance for the public to go behind the site hoardings of live construction sites, offices, factories, and training centres across the UK to discover more about the industry and for employers to encourage recruitment. With job vacancies reported to be at a record high at the end of the summer, and some employers finding that they are struggling to recruit staff in some sectors due to the current competitive jobs market, many employers are turning their attention to how to recruit and attract the right candidates. Some of the most in-demand jobs include painters, decorators and plasterers. Regardless of whether you are a sole-trader or a company, as an employer, these are the key stages you should follow to ensure a smooth hiring process, and a checklist to consider when taking on new employees.
Writing the job advertisement In the advertisement, define the job itself by setting out the tasks or duties the successful candidate will be responsible for in their day-to-day role and identify the person required in terms of essential and desirable skills and/or qualifications, experience and personal qualities. Set out details of the salary, location and any benefits on offer to attract the right candidate.
Attracting candidates You can use social media, online job boards, a recruitment agency, a traditional advert in a newspaper, or a mixture of these methods to attract the right candidates for the role. The advert should make clear how the applicant should apply for the role and the deadline for submitting an application e.g. by submitting a CV and covering letter, by completing an online application form, or alternative method. Remember applicants’ personal information should be processed in accordance with data protection legislation. They should be informed how their data will be processed in a privacy notice.
Assessing the candidates Once you have drawn up a short list of potential candidates, you will need to decide on your selection process. This is usually done by interview either in person or via a video link, but could also include completion of an online assessment.
Offering the job Find practical DIY templates and guidance, around topics such as employment and health and safety law, on the Law Hub. Get a token code from PDA Head Office and sign up for free on www.markellaw.co.uk/registration
You may choose to provide the successful candidates with a job offer letter setting out the main terms and job start date, with a full employment contract to follow. Let the unsuccessful candidates know as soon as possible that they have not been selected for the role.
Employer checklist • Have you registered as an employer with HMRC? • Does the pay meet at least the National Minimum Wage for their age? • Do you have Employer’s Liability insurance? • Have you provided an employment contract? • Have you carried out a right to work check to ensure the individual has the right to work in the UK? A failure to do so could result in a penalty if it transpires that the individual does not have the legal right to work in the UK. • Have you set up PAYE and checked if you need to auto enrol your employee into a workplace pension scheme? You will need to consider whether you need staff on either a permanent basis (either on fixed hours or variable hours), or temporarily on a fixed term contract to cover a busy period or a specific client project. Where you are not employing staff directly, you may need to advertise for self-employed contractors.
Other options If you are not looking for a skilled or semi-skilled employee or contractor, but are in a position to support a recruit with mentoring and training them on the job in order to become a skilled tradesperson, you could consider taking on an apprentice. Apprenticeships have always had a crucial role in securing the future of the painting and decorating trade. Painting and Decorating Apprenticeships usually take three years to complete. In essence, apprentices need to be: • 16 or older • paid the appropriate minimum wage • given at least 20% of working hours for training/study • taught job-specific skills
Setting out terms of employment You must provide a written statement of employment (or employment contract) by the employee’s start date if you’re employing someone for more than a month.
• mentored by experienced staff Further information on funding and guidance on the steps for employing an apprentice can be found at www.gov.uk/employing-an-apprentice

e m o c l e WTO THE ASSOCIATION... SKILLS ON SHOW THE PDA CEO, Neil Ogilvie, recently attended the EuroSkills European Vocational Championship which was held on 23-25 September in Gratz, Austria. The vocational championship is held every two years in one of the 31 WorldSkills Europe member countries. It is a Championship for Young Professionals who have finished their vocational education and want to showcase their skills. Competitors demonstrated their skills and knowledge in working scenarios related to their professional domains. Neil was part of the expert team representing UNIEP at the event, and there was a UNIEP board meeting convened at the same time. The next event takes place in two years time, and the PDA will be promoting this opportunity to newly qualified professionals in the UK who want to take part and showcase their skills. EuroSkills 2023 is scheduled for 16-20 August 2023 in St Petersburg. WorldSkills Europe is the body ultimately responsible for the European vocational skills championships, EuroSkills. It is a non-profit member association founded in 2007 and headquartered in the Netherlands. WorldSkills Europe raises awareness of the importance of high-quality vocational education and training, and currently has 31 member nations, including the United Kingdom.

THE ERASMUS AGENCY of Luxembourg, Anefore, has just selected the DIGI-PAINT project, submitted by UNIEP last May. With this project, and based on a crucial need of the sector, UNIEP wants to create digital tailor-made solutions adapted to painting and decorating educators to give them the resources and tools to overcome the current and future challenges. Among the different activities foreseen by the project, a resources’ database will be created with painting content, to overcome the lack of in person training due to the Covid crisis. Furthermore, to support the work-based learning, in case it has to take place in a virtual environment, several real-life situations and practical cases will be designed. Starting from the teaching competencies needed, the project will initially set up virtual training. Teaching guidelines will be designed for some digital tutorials and teachers’ booklets in fact sheet form, to be validated by the educators and the VET providers. Next, six real-life situations will be established virtually, to explain unique learning opportunities for the Painter and Varnisher qualification in a digital context for tutors and apprentices, to make up for the lack of face-to-face learning. The idea is to encourage educators to document and develop their ability to teach using digital tools. In order to gather educators from all over Europe, a hub for teachers, trainers and in-company tutors will be created to serve as exchanging point and validation of a project’s results. DIGI-PAINT will be implemented within 22 months as the profession sees an urgency in finding solutions to training in times where the online is the only option.

CHAMPIONS OF QUALITY IN OUR NEW series we have teamed up with Purdy to introduce the Painting and Decorating Association Members that have taken part in the Inspiring the Next Generation video series. We will also be exploring why each member thinks using quality tools is so important for professional decorators. THE INSPIRING THE Next Generation series looks to champion the professional decorator and encourage younger people to take up a role in the industry... And no one is more passionate about offering young people the training and apprenticeship opportunities they need to succeed, than professional painter and decorator Desmond Cass from D.Cass & Son. Desmond was first inspired to take up painting and decorating after going to work with a local tradesman, where he was tasked with preparing the space ready to be redecorated by stripping wallpaper, sanding down skirting boards and ensuring surfaces were clean. Although at first Desmond did not enjoy the work, when he saw the completed project and what his prep work had enabled the decorator to achieve, he was blown away. Seeing the transformation made him decide that he wanted to pursue a career in the industry. Desmond went on to complete an apprenticeship where he learnt the technicalities of the trade in college and applied these teachings and skills on site. Taking this
10
approach has made Desmond understand just how essential it is to support the next generation of decorators through apprenticeship schemes to ensure a continuous line of highly skilled and qualified professionals. As such, over 65 years, D.Cass & Son has trained 13 apprentices in total and each one has gone on to have a successful career. As well as training, Desmond also advocates the use of the correct, high-quality tools. He explained that in one room there will be numerous tasks and surfaces that all require a different product and application tool, so having the right tools at hand will help to improve efficiently and the overall finish. To complete work to a high standard, Desmond relies on Purdy. He likes that Purdy offers brushes tailored to
different types of paint, such as the Pro Extra Monarch that has long and thick bristles that are ideal for use with higher viscosity, oil-based paints. Alternatively, Desmond can use the Sprig for lower viscosity water-based paints thanks to its thin filaments that ensure the paint can be applied in a smooth motion with less drag for a flawless finish. In addition, Purdy makes it easier for Desmond to achieve certain finishes thanks to products like its Cub brush. Ideal for intricate jobs, it has an angular style tip that makes cutting in and getting into tight corners a breeze. Its design also means that Desmond can get closer to the substrate and have greater control thanks to the lightweight handle. What’s more, the unique blend of Dupont solid, round and tapered filaments ensures a high-quality finish every time.

MOVE FORWARD WITH CONFIDENCE WE ALL KNOW COVID-19 has taken its toll. It has brought to light that it is more important than ever to look after your mental and physical wellbeing... This will inevitably be key for success, not only as an individual but also for your business, ensuring you continue to thrive. We know you are being pulled in a number of directions, leaving you increasingly taxed for time. So here are some tips to consider...
Financial Records Now more than ever, you need to have your accounts and finances under control and in order. The financial insights you can access from your accounts helps you make smart decisions. This may mean just keeping up with your bookkeeping, but for those key decisions you will probably want to prepare cashflow forecasts to review those ‘what if’ scenarios. Don’t forget to utilise the new technology available to help streamline your finances; OCR (Optical Character Recognition) apps can capture your invoices and post them into your accounting software, whilst cloud accounting software can link to industry specific and general apps for workflow, timesheet recording, cashflow forecasting etc. Work smarter not harder! Due to COVID-19, not being able to operate or learning to in a different way has given businesses the time to stop and reassess their business and objectives, and ultimately enhance their operations. Ask yourself this question: How sustainable is your profit performance?
Plan Ahead It is never too early to plan ahead, and all business owners should feel encouraged to have a three to five year business strategy, and a clear succession plan. With announced increases in the corporation tax rate to 25% in 2023, increased super allowances of up to 130% available for capital expenditure for a two-year period, and enhanced loss carry back rules for a two-year period, it is more important than ever to be looking into the future with a sound business plan.
Research and Development Eligible businesses can claim benefit from additional tax relief of up to £24.70 for every £100 of qualifying expenditure, or even a cash grant in some cases. To qualify, a project must seek to make an appreciable improvement in its field in order to create a scientific or technological advancement. This can be a product, device, material or a process improvement. If you have come across a problem in your business and have used some element of science or technology to try to fix it then you might have a potential claim, even if your development was unsuccessful or aborted.
For more, contact Azets at hello@azets.co.uk and a local team will get back to you promptly.
VACCINATIONS CONSIDERATIONS FOR BUSINESSES PDA PARTNER, CITATION, has explored three of the most commonly asked questions that businesses need to consider before they create and implement any kind of vaccination policy for staff. However, it is still early days and there is limited guidance available so we cannot be sure of the view employment tribunals will take, particularly in terms of drawing the line between necessary and unnecessary infringement on an individual’s rights. If in doubt, you should always seek your own independent professional advice.
Can I ask my employees if they have been vaccinated? Employees are under no medical obligation, and the government isn’t making it compulsory for employees to disclose their vaccination status (with the exceptions of specific roles/sectors, such as those in primary care). It is a fair question to ask, but where an employee objects and action is taken, the employer will have to justify the need for requiring them to reveal their vaccination status. Employers might find it helpful to have a discussion with the individual about their concerns for not wanting to disclose their status and to chat through their concerns, e.g. if they have data protection concerns. You should also be mindful of private concerns such as underlying medical conditions. Ultimately, this is less onerous than a vaccination policy but still required to find a balance between the rights and impact on the individual against the needs of the business, as well as a business ensuring consistency in how they treat staff.
Can I keep a record of whether my employees have been vaccinated? Collecting data on vaccination status is processing ‘special category data’ under the Data Protection Act 2018, which means you need additional justification for doing so – it must be ‘clear and compelling’.
Be clear with your employees on what you’re trying to achieve and how collecting this data will help you achieve this. If you do decide to record the vaccination status of your employees, you should have a clear policy which covers: • What personal data will be required • What you’re going to use that data for and who will the data be shared with. This will be particularly important if you send employees onto client/customer sites and they request information on whether your employee has received their vaccination • How long you plan to keep the data • Decisions you intend to make based on the data You must also give employees the opportunity to discuss the collection of their data if they have any concerns.
Can I ask job applicants to declare whether they’ve been vaccinated? In terms of recruitment, if you made it a condition that prospective candidates must be vaccinated to apply for a role within your business, there’s the possibility of discrimination claims on a number of fronts. Given that the vaccination programme is being rolled out on the basis of age, if you were to say that vaccination was a condition of employment, then for at least a few months, you may be ruling out younger candidates. There’s also the issue for those who are recommended not to have the vaccination based on underlying medical conditions. The guidance for pregnant people has changed significantly over the last few months. Although currently pregnant people are offered the vaccine along with others in their age group (or before if they have a specific medical condition), many may be reluctant to get vaccinated during their pregnancy. All of these situations pose quite difficult considerations for a manager to decide as to whether or not that would be an acceptable reason not to have the vaccine.
Creating and implementing any kind of COVID vaccination policy is a new and complex area of Employment Law, one that has no precedent and requires careful management. After working with many businesses throughout the pandemic, Citation knows how tough it can be to meet your obligations while protecting your business. When you partner with Citation, their team of experts become an extended part of your team. So, they’re on hand to make sure that you’ve got access to all the information you need to keep you compliant from day one.

Although no business had been conducted since our previous meeting, we had to make it our AGM after consulting with Head Office. The meeting was excellent and well attended, including our own Chief Executive, Neil Ogilvie, who kindly took the time out to come along and give us a talk on the present and future of the Painting and Decorating Association. Also present was National Treasurer, Robert Smith from Leeds, and the past Regional President, Nigel Deamer from York. All these gentlemen are very loyal workers to the PDA and always support Wakefield branch at our AGM. Indeed, the Wakefield branch was Neil ’s first introduction to the Association when he used to attend as an apprentice to his uncle Kenneth. With old friends meeting up for the first time in many months, the meeting finished with a light supper provided by the landlady of the hotel. Our second meeting took place on 1 September, and we were delighted to see David Turner, who was a director at Clarry Websters company of shopfitters and decorators, who were based in Normanton. He said how much he had enjoyed the gathering and meeting up with old friends. Our oldest Member, Bernard Higgs, brought along his hobby of model making skills, all made from matchsticks. With steam engines, tractors, cars, ladders, handcarts etc. Not bad for an 89 year old, Bernard never misses a meeting.

BACK TO SCHOOL IAN WILLIAMS’ APPRENTICES Antonio Muro and Stephen Sambrooks mixed work and play recently at Thornton Primary School when they volunteered to give a little extra in addition to the resurfacing works they were carrying out. Having discovered this unused playhouse which was blocked off for safety reasons, they arranged to visit the school in the holidays, installed supports on the playhouse and completed a new paint makeover. There were some very happy pupils!

ADVICE AND TIPS
A family bereavement has made me consider what we do when things don’t go to plan...
Expecting the unexpected As Robert Burns said, “The best laid schemes o’ mice an’ men, Gang aft a-gley”. Or, more comprehensibly, “however well you plan, things will often go wrong”. Life always throws up the unexpected, that’s the universe for you, chaotic and unpredictable. So how do you plan for when things don’t go to plan, whether it’s at work or at home?
A Funeral in Cyprus This was particularly pertinent for me recently. My Dad died suddenly

When life throws you curveballs So what do you do when stuff doesn’t go to plan? Throw your hands up in the air, fling some good, ripe words into the sky and trudge off to the pub? Or do you talk to people, take a step back, work out your priorities, make a Plan A, B and C, focus on the stuff you can do - one task at a time and make sure you’re counting your blessings instead of focusing too much on the negatives? It’s your choice.

ADVICE AND TIPS
Talk budgets without the awkwardness Broaching the topic of budget with a new client can be tricky, but it is a vital step. It’s important to enter the conversation with confidence, to demonstrate your experience and professionalism, and remember, these conversations will allow you to determine whether the person is your ideal client.
Explain the figures Once you have an initial starting point to work from, you can then fully explain what your services entail and the costs involved. From here you can discuss your client’s plans and provide a detailed breakdown of the costs involved to realise their

Be confident in your work and avoid the pressure of providing the lowest quote. An informed client won’t necessarily go for the lower price, this decision will be based on a number of factors. Instead, give a range for the potential client to work from, as this will allow you to be flexible.
Stick to what works for you Having a good understanding of your business model and how this works best for you can be an effective way to streamline budget discussions, and by being upfront about pricing you can ensure you’re both on the same page straight away.

reported, with the lowest ever rate of waste sent to landfill, at just 4% of the 1996 figure. One major sustainability challenge that still faces the paint industry, what to do with the 55 million litres of paint that are leftover each year. As it stands, 98% of this leftover paint is incinerated or landfilled, which is harmful to the environment. BCF’s response to this is PaintCare, a voluntary national stewardship programme which aims for 75% of leftover paint to be recycled, reused or remanufactured by 2030. Remanufactured paint has a 50% lower eco footprint, and the technology is already in use in a small number of companies. The paint industry is currently consulting stakeholders including Government and the PDA, before deciding on how to move the programme forward. More news is expected later this year. More information on the scheme and its benefits can be found on the PaintCare website at www.paintcare.org.uk

THE 26TH UNITED Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP26, will be held in November this year. The UK Government holds the Conference’s Presidency and as the summit is being held in Glasgow, all eyes will on the UK to showcase its commitments to sustainability. The paint industry has already achieved a huge amount with regards to sustainable action. There has been a three-fold reduction in VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds, or solvents) emissions since 1996, with 84% of decorative paints now sold being water-based. This has led to a five-fold reduction in the carbon footprint of paint consumption, making a significant positive impact on the sustainability of the paint industry. Looking at the footprint of paint production, UK factories have halved the amount of waste produced, with 55% of UK paint factories now sending zero waste to landfill and recycling levels up to 67%. FROM COUNTRIES AND companies to consumers and citizens, tackling climate change is increasingly seen as a defining priority for the 2020s. Climate change has been triggered by increasing levels of greenhouse gases within the atmosphere. In June 2019, Parliament passed legislation that committed the UK to reducing its net emissions by 100 per cent by 2050. This made the UK the first major economy to pass laws to ensure that it ends its contribution to global warming, representing a milestone in the journey towards global sustainability. Established in 1901, BSI is the UK’s National Standards Body. They have over a century of experience and work with organisations of every size, across all industry sectors and understand small businesses and the issues they face. The Little Book of Net Zero for small businesses provides a straightforward ‘how to’ guide to get you started, and PDA Members can find the guide in the Sustainability and Environmental section of the PDA Members Resource Hub or directly at https://tinyurl.com/BSINetZero

HEALTH AND SAFETY Following on from Back Care Awareness Week, which ran from 4–8 October this year, Alex Minett, Head of Products & Markets at CHAS looks at the steps that companies and individuals can take to help prevent back injury occuring in the workplace.
ALWAYS WATCH YOUR BACK PERHAPS UNSURPRISINGLY, CONSTRUCTION is responsible for the second-highest rate of musculoskeletal disorders in all industry with agriculture, forestry and fishing coming out just ahead. In 2019-20 the Labour Force Survey found that 8.9 million working days were lost due to work-related musculoskeletal disorders, with 480,000 workers suffering from injuries, of which 37% were linked to the back. While the rate of work-related musculoskeletal disorders have been showing a slight downward trend, they still account for 30% of all work-related ill-health issues reported and 27% of all working days lost. It’s therefore vital for companies to look at how to prevent the risk of injury in their workplaces.
How can back problems occur? Generally, back issues will develop over time and become a chronic or episodic problem causing mild to severe pain. Sometimes they will occur after a work-related accident. While rarely life-threatening, back problems can cause life-limiting problems and chronic pain for sufferers. According to the HSE, tasks that can cause back pain or make existing issues worse include:
Training is a crucial aspect of managing any health and safety risk. For example, employees should be educated on the dangers of back and spine injuries and how to recognise and avoid the causes. Training should also include techniques on moving and handling heavy loads and equipment either through demonstrations or videos. Employee input when it comes to managing the risk of back injury is valuable. Often, back pain occurs following a previous episode, so employees are best placed to provide information on their back health histories, as well as their capabilities. They should always be encouraged to report problems early so the proper treatment can be sought. People are far more likely to recover from back pain when recognised early and treated appropriately. Where an employee may be reluctant to admit to their limitations, look for signs they may be struggling with back pain. Reluctance to do particular tasks could be a red flag that they are harbouring an injury. Return to work discussions are an essential part of an employees recovery. It may be possible that they can come back before all their symptoms have completely disappeared depending on medical advice and consider whether an adjustment to work practices to accommodate their return will be necessary. It might be prudent to consult an occupational health professional for advice on back pain. Larger companies may have in-house occupational health departments; however there are plenty of external contractors who provide occupational health services.
• Lifting heavy or bulky loads • Carrying loads awkwardly, possibly one-handed • Pushing, pulling or dragging heavy loads • Manual handling in awkward places, such as during delivery work • Repetitive tasks, such as packing products • Bending, crouching or stooping • Stretching, twisting and reaching • Being in one position for a long time • Working beyond your capability or when physically overtired • Working with display screen equipment (with poor posture) • Driving long distances or over rough ground, especially if the seat is not, or cannot be, properly adjusted or operating heavy equipment.
Legal obligations and managing the risk Under The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 employers have a duty to protect workers from harm by providing adequate training in health and safety as well as information, instruction and supervision. They must also maintain a secure working environment where tasks can be undertaken safely. The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 relate specifically to work that involves ‘the moving of items either by lifting, lowering, carrying, pushing or pulling’, any of which could present a potential risk of injury. It’s easier to prevent back injuries than cure them, and the steps an employer must take under the regulations begin with looking at whether the need for manual handling can be avoided altogether. Where this is not possible employers then have a duty to make a suitable assessment of the risk of injury from any manual handling operations that cannot be avoided, while looking to reduce the
risk of harm to as low as is reasonably practical, such as by using machinery or other equipment to carry out the task. Risk assessments and safety procedures should be reviewed regularly. Lastly, the regulations state that where possible, employees who are undertaking manual handling should be provided with precise information on the weight of each load and the heaviest side of any load whose centre of gravity is not positioned centrally.
Treating back pain The NHS recommends a number of evidence-based treatments for back pain, and it can be helpful to signpost what employees can do to help themselves. For those given the all clear by a doctor, keeping active is lauded as one of the most important things as it’s likely to quicken recovery. Simple back stretches and exercises can often help reduce back pain, and gentle activities such as yoga, swimming, walking, and Pilates will strengthen and support the body. If back pain continues, it’s advisable to see a GP who may make referrals for further investigations, more specialist treatments, or prescribe stronger medication and muscle relaxants, occasionally surgery is appropriate.
Back pain and mental health It is worth noting that sufferers of any chronic pain could go on to develop issues with their mental health, such as a depression. Unrelenting back pain can lead to poor sleeping and eating habits, interrupt physical activity and all of the other activities that contribute to positive emotional wellbeing. Stress from suffering with pain can often exacerbate the physical symptoms, and so it becomes a vicious circle.
Conclusion Back pain is an extremely common condition. Although it usually improves within weeks, the disruption to businesses and workforces can be significant, particularly when there is a high risk the problem can return. A robust and transparent health and safety ethos, plus good, caring relations between employer and employee will pay dividends in the successful management of work-related back pain problems.

PREMIER TROPHY AWARDS
Matthew Baines, Trade Business Unit Director of PPG Architectural Coatings UK Ltd.
AFTER THE COVID-19 pandemic halted the Awards in 2020, representatives from across the sector came together in September for the PDA’s flagship event, The Premier Trophy Awards, which is now in its 32nd year. The magnificent Plaisterers’ Hall, London, once again provided an elegant setting for the awards ceremony. The 2021 awards received a total of over 70 entries, covering all aspects of the painting and decorating industry. These were then assessed and scrutinised by the judges to select the shortlisted finalists comprising five projects across seven categories. Johnstone’s Trade was this year’s main sponsor and guest speaker, Matthew Baines, Trade Business Unit Director of PPG Architectural Coatings UK Ltd encouraged businesses to look at the future and to address the key issue of reducing the carbon footprint of the sector. In total 23 competitors attended the three heats, held at Bournemouth and Poole College (The Southern Heat) Coventry College (The Midlands Heat), and Leeds College of Building (The Northern Heat). The PDA extends thanks to the colleges for their facilities and help with the events. Thomas Turner of Alfred Bagnall and Sons Ltd who attends Doncaster College was awarded first prize in the Junior Category. The Senior winner was Nicole Germaine of EQUANS who attends Leeds College of Building. Congratulations to both on this achievement – both worthy winners! The Premier Trophy Awards were presented by Matthew Baines and Chief Executive of the Institute of Clerks of Works and Construction Inspectorate, Rachel Morris. The Commercial Category was won by Bell Decorating Group Ltd for their work on the exclusive five-star Hotel Fairmont, St Andrews, Scotland with a superb finish. In the Industrial Category, Jack Tighe Ltd was awarded the winning accolade for their work on Bardney Bridge, Lincolnshire. Gary Marsh Quality Decorators was judged winner of the Decorative Category for the redecoration of an historic house in Durham City.
This company has been a Member of the PDA since 2002. Their workmanship is to the highest standard. This year’s project has impressed the judges who, on speaking to the clients, found they held them in high regard. The finishes were impeccable with excellent colour matches. A well deserved award to a company that, over the last nineteen years in membership, has been successful through the high standards and quality of workmanship plus compliance to Health and Safety regulations. Good client service was an aspect that has contributed to success. A credit to the industry.

Very Highly Commended Ian Williams Ltd Dive Tank, HMNB Devonport, Plymouth Preparation played a significant part in this project with several techniques inside the training dive tank, including shot blasting before scabbling and grinding the existing surfaces. This was not an easy project to complete, and the specialist paint only gave 10 minutes of application time. There was well deserved praise for the contractor from the client, and this is echoed by the judge - well done.

Bell Decorating Group Ltd Hotel Fairmont, St Andrews, Scotland Client: Hotel Fairmont St Andrews Manufacturers: Johnstone's Trade / Dulux Trade / Craig and Rose The contractor worked closely with the paint manufacturer to achieve a high standard of colour match to meet the clients’ requirements. The result was a high finish on this upmarket Five-star Hotel.

The client required every room to have a different finish but with an overall character. This resulted in bespoke wallpapers from several suppliers and delivered within a tight contract timescale. The site team were clearly very proud and rightly so for the standard of their finish. The gold ceiling was one of their favourites. The woodwork, panelling and fireplace required a major clean and refinishing. The hotel team were very pleased with the quality of the work achieved and the aftercare from the contractor.
The building has listed status, and due to the coastal location and its condition, a large amount of preparation was required. English Heritage limited the replacement and repair of some of the features. The client was very happy with the contractor's support and assistance during this period to get the work underway. The finish has remained crisp, especially given the time since it was completed. All parties were very happy with the finished work.

Bell Decorating Group Ltd The Courtauld Institute of Art, Vernon Square, London
This iconic theatre from 1962 has been refreshed and updated to today's standards but has retained its original design elements. The job involved complex access and working with other trades. Very good finishes were achieved on the paintwork and papering. The contractor applied specialist industrial paint by Lechler, typically used in the car industry on the main structural columns in the foyer. A great job well executed and on a tight programme of work.

This overflow building for the Institute of Art required major redecoration and working to a tight timescale. Major issues had to be overcome due to moisture penetration and uneven plasterwork. The overall finish of this job was very good and to the client’s satisfaction.
This bridge over the river at Bristol Temple Meads Station is part of the main highway out of Bristol town centre. The contractor was not the first on-site, as the first contractor pulled out of the job just before it started. Bristol Council had to then go to the second bidder. Ian Williams stepped up to do the job to manage and paint it. The work was to encapsulate the scaffold so glass grit blasting could occur and then paint in different shades to bring out the framework. The bridge work is to be phased over three years, so only one side has been finished. When the whole bridge is complete, it will be a very smart, eye-catching job.

Due to the nature of the project, on arrival at the site with the contractor, access was denied due to operational procedures taking place. Inspection was given to the comprehensive paperwork for the project. The marking was done on the paperwork as we would not have been able to see inside the tanks. We could only see the painting of the external of the tanks from outside the perimeter fence. An extensive project – well done.
Commended Alfred Bagnall & Sons Ltd Meadowhall Link Bridge/Testing of Cable Lines, Meadowhall Interchange, Sheffield The Meadowhall footbridge bridge arches over an access road and required maintaining 24-hour access, plus no chemical-based cleaning materials due to the risk of contaminating the river. Protection to the main gas pipe at the bridge base was needed to provide access for a 17.5-ton mobile work platform. The steelwork was power washed with water and a single alkyd paint system for the job. All parties were highly satisfied with the access measures, control, and quality of the work. This is an excellent piece of work carried out in complex circumstances.

The bridge had to be closed so the work could be carried out safely, except for pedestrian access. This involved a tight programme due to the disruption and not helped with severe flooding, which stopped work for four days. The contractor achieved this to an excellent visual standard. The client was very pleased, and this is an excellent piece of work - well done.

This was an unusual and challenging decoration job that required much patience and diligence. Achieving a very high-quality finish on the oak and cast-iron detailing to the doors. Working conditions were not easy as access was always required. This project is a credit to the craftsmen and the company - well done.
This bridge is privately owned, maintained by a trust and with a public highway running across the top. A challenging project to access all the areas, a scaffold was erected in the river to access the underside. The lattice construction meant access to the ironwork was particularly difficult. The result is a great finish with an intricate colour scheme. A good job - well done.
Highly Commended Cousins Ltd Audley Coopers, Englefield, Surrey This is a three-storey grade II listed building with a magnificent view of Durham Cathedral. The project was a complete redecoration of the house following a major refurbishment of the property. One of the many challenges was the single strip of wallpaper covering all three storeys and in a restricted space between the balustrading and wall. The dining room is particularly well finished in Zoffany Crimson and Farrow & Ball India Yellow on the beading. Indeed, the client was delighted with the project and most impressed with the dining room.

This building is the focal point of the village with all the facilities. The painting contractor has had to carry out work to basement car parking areas, plant rooms, and high-class flats. This is great work that included wall coverings to a very high standard.
Commended Triton Building Services St Martin's Theatre, West Street, London The project was the external redecoration of this early 1900’s theatre, which has had the Mousetrap show running for many years. When the job took place, access had to be always available. This is a clean looking project that has brought this building back to life. The contractor has done a good job.

Story Decorating Group Ltd Caton Court, Bulk Road, Lancaster Manufacturer: Crown Paints / Sherwin Williams Client: Aparto Student The finish of a high standard student accommodation, carried out under a tight contract programme. To achieve the required standards, some pre-finishing and preparation works were done off-site using spray finishes. Wallpapering and applying murals were also included. On inspection of the building, the high standard finish was achieved throughout, and the operative team should be proud of their finished work. Well done.
Very Highly Commended Alfred Bagnall & Sons (London) Ltd Clifton Court, Maida Vale, London
Winner
Alfred Bagnall & Sons Ltd Liverpool Central Library, Merseyside Client: Engie Ltd Manufacturer: Dulux Trade This is an amazing space. The scope of repainting the ceiling and central feature throws up so many issues; the ceiling height, size and shape are daunting; the library required a minimum closed time to the public; so many issues had to be solved by scoping out the project delivery. The result is something the teams should be very proud of, and on their CV for the rest of their career. This is a superb job in a magnificent setting. Well done to everybody involved.
These majestic flats in a conservation area, stand out with their exposed timber and plasterwork. On inspection, the paintwork looked impressive, and the finish was to a high standard. It was not the most straightforward building to work on due to the complex elevations and details. A job the contractor can be proud of well done.
Highly Commended A C Beck & Son (Contracts) Ltd Cornwall Gardens, Kensington, London The externals on this property required significant repairs before decoration. The access was complex and needed permission from the local authority to work above the pavement. Even though we inspected it eighteen months late (due to Covid-19), the job was still clean and tidy. This was a well-done job and an impressive finish.
Very Highly Commended Alfred Bagnall & Sons (Midlands) Ltd Genting Casino/Resort World, Birmingham A very eye-catching piece of work over three levels of an atrium. A large amount of laser work set out the initial design lines, and the result is outstanding. Painting execution is excellent, especially as it was carried out on a 14 metre MEWP, and much of it was curves on existing curved surfaces. Operatives worked night shifts to complete the project on time. The immense skill of the two painters involved in producing the sharp lines are to be applauded.
SMALL CONTRACTOR
Highly Commended Anderson Marriott & Co Ltd St Patrick's Catholic Church, Bradford, West Yorkshire The full redecoration of this grade II listed church was part of the second phase of extensive work. A MEWP and scaffolding towers were used to carry out extensive ceiling and beam redecoration. The colour scheme, drawn up in collaboration with Crown Paints, complements this historic church's decorative features, and the excellent finish achieved is testimony to the extensive preparation work despite being completed at very short notice.
Highly Commended Cousins Ltd Cadogan House, Sloane Street, London This hotel decoration was done to an extremely high standard, finishes were near faultless. On entry to the hotel, the grandeur and the high quality of the decoration could be seen immediately. The client was very happy, and a joy for the judges to visit.
Commended Alfred Bagnall & Sons (Restoration) Ltd Kings and Queens Colonnades, Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich The redecoration of these historic colonnades’ ceilings involved the combined involvement of the paint manufacturers and various conservation bodies to achieve the correct colour and finish. Work was disrupted at short notice due to the historic nature of the establishment with scheduled filming and other activities. A very neat and clean finish.

This is showcase work and well worthy of praise lauded upon it.

NEW BUILD
Highly Commended Ian Williams Ltd Eversley House, Sketty, Swansea, Wales External redecoration of this 1909 building lead to asbestos and rotten areas being discovered which had to be treated. Access had to be constantly maintained, and this included the fire escape and disabled access. The finish was excellent, with a white background and black faux timber beams giving a good contrast. A very good-looking job.
Commended Bell Decorating Group Ltd Burton Flour Mills, Newton Solney, Burton on Trent Works included a section of a historic grade II listed water mill and decorating an elevated walkway that required a MEWP for access and protection of the river below, and included the repainting of 1.3-metre-high lettering. The main building had narrow styled small pane metal windows. Challenges were overcome to produce an overall pleasing finish.
Very Highly Commended Neil Bailey Decorating Caswell Farm Barn, Brize Norton, Oxfordshire This impressive conversion of a 300 year-old barn into luxury wedding suites was to an exceptional standard. Oak beams were finished to preserve their natural look, new oak staircases and handrails had to be prepared and varnished, plus bespoke furniture was all hand-painted. A fine example of the quality of the contractor’s work - well done.
Very Highly Commended Stuart Yates Decor The Orangery, Brearley Hall, Old Whittington, Derbyshire Newels, handrails and spindles required a high level of preparation before the painting to achieve a high-class finish. A striking horizontal wallpaper to the stairwell feature wall, and creative colour scheme was complemented by a selection of small decorative pictures.
Highly Commended Stuart Yates Decor External Decoration, Private Dwelling, Matlock, Derbyshire A mature stone dwelling with restricted access on an elevated position on an exposed hillside. GOLF TOURNAMENT IS LUCKY FOR SOME! THE 13TH ANNUAL PPG Golf Masters regional heats recently took place across the UK and Ireland. The competition is open to all PPG Architectural Coatings UK & Ireland account holders. To ensure the safety of guests, all heats were run safely and in full compliance of government Covid guidelines. Over 500 golfers played across eight regional heats, all battling it out for a place in the final, which took place at the renowned Scottish Turnberry course in late September. Here, the eight regional heat winners and the 2020 Turnberry champion all played for the grand prize – a golfing trip for four to Valderrama, Spain, and the opportunity of returning to next year’s final to defend their title.
Aside from the chance of making it to the final, guests had the opportunity to play at some great courses, as well as the chance of winning plenty of other fantastic prizes at each heat, including prizes for second and third place, longest drive and nearest the pin. Guests also had the chance to win a Nissan Navara in the ‘Hole in One’ competition where there were some close shots but unfortunately no winners this year! Sarah Clough, PPG customer loyalty manager, said, “The PPG Golf Masters is such a great way of bringing together our customers and thanking them for their continued support. During what has been a very challenging year for us all, we really wanted to make our thirteenth event the best one yet, giving our customers
the chance to not only win amazing prizes, but to also have a great day out.” During the heats guest could also have a try at the PPG charity nearest the pin competition. Over £4,000 was raised during the competition, with all proceeds going directly to PPG’s partnering charity Mind – a fantastic result! Sarah added, “It’s promising to see that the discussion around mental health has opened up in recent years, but there’s still a lot of work to be done. So, we think it’s important that we take every opportunity to raise as much funds as possible for Mind, who are really helping to make a difference to people’s lives across the country.” Find out more at www.ppggolfmasters.co.uk
SMOOTH OPERATOR AT P&D SHOW MIRKA IS SHOWCASING its innovative LEROS-S 950CV at the P&D Show this year on stands 67 & 83, designed for a variety of applications where time is of the essence. The new LEROS-S combines the best-in-class features of the original LEROS, including a sanding head with 180° flexibility and a 5mm random orbital movement, in a more compact design that makes sanding in confined spaces easier, more efficient and dust-free. Its lightweight ergonomic design ensures it is balanced, no matter the angle at which it is used, and its two dedicated grip points provide the user with full control of the tool, which leads to less strain on the body and back. In addition, it weighs in at less than 3.2g, so the operator can sand for longer periods without fatigue. The sander’s brushless motor technology also ensures a constant speed with no loss in efficiency under heavy pressure and load. When combined with Mirka’s dust-free net abrasives and suitable dust extraction, the LEROS-S provides virtually dust-free sanding. It has dual suction points for dust removal, so the work environment is cleaner and healthier for both the customer and user. In addition, maintenance of the tool is minimised as there are no carbon brushes to be changed. Also making their return to the P&D Show this year are the Mirka DEOS Delta and Mirka DEOS. The sanders have been designed and developed from the ground-up for use across multiple applications to meet the constantly evolving needs of the end user, providing a consistent smooth finish that is the hallmark of Mirka’s tools.

SECTOR NEWS
BACK WITH A BANG! After a difficult two years for the industry, the ‘Big One’ is back with a bang! The National Painting and Decorating Show will return to Coventry this November after an enforced absence in 2020, caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The industry has suffered a rollercoaster ride, with contracts postponed, then the pent-up demand released once the lockdown was lifted, and now ongoing issues with supplies and delivery, but one thing is certain; the UK painting and decorating industry’s biggest and only national event will be welcoming thousands of visitors to view the latest products from nearly 100 exhibitors. The show offers a mix of face-to-face contact, lively and informative demonstrations, the presence of go-to experts, finding new products and the chance to snap up showonly deals and free samples that appeals to the visitor. “Rather than keep on ‘YouTubing’ everything and going on websites, I find it better to see the product and talk to someone,” says painter and decorator Steven Green. And the exhibitors are equally enthusiastic, Minul Shah from Axus Décor makes the point, “It’s the only real industry event. If you’re not here where else are you going to get a chance to interact with the people that are ultimately using your product?” End-users and merchants will be among the 3,000-plus attendees expected to visit the
Coventry Building Society Arena (regulars will remember it under its previous guise as the Ricoh Arena) on 23 and 24 November. Professionals from throughout the UK will be attending this easy-to-access central England location and exhibitors booked into this year’s event also hail from Canada, Belgium, Holland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Scandinavia and Turkey. “My favourite part is the demonstrations, educational interest and the people that are doing them are from the trade,” says John Martin of John Martin Painting Contractors. In addition to the decorating contractors and stockists who will be there, expect also to find some interior designers, architects and housebuilders seeking out new products and systems. “Our show is an innovations event and centres around demonstrations and masterclass areas to see the latest technology in painting and decorating,” says P&D Show organiser Terry Dullaway. “Spray painting technology has come on leaps and bounds and is now more accessible, while there has been real improvement in sophisticated coatings technology.” Terry adds, “We see real potential for growth at Coventry Building Society Arena, which has only been strengthened with the refurbishments to the indoor arena,
the planned pavilion entrance and proposed extra hotel space on site.” The show is now in its 26th year, the past 17 of which have been at the Coventry venue, where it ranks as one of the arena’s flagship trade events. This underlines its track record as the place to be for those who use, sell, stock, or specify P&D products. Among those firms planning to launch new products at this year’s event are Timbabuild, Axus Décor, Terraco, Bedec, Rustins, and Ciret. The first 1,000 visitors through the door each day will be handed a goody bag packed with exhibitors’ samples, and every attendee will be automatically entered into a prize draw to win a QTech Trade Decorators Pack worth over £1,200. The National Painting and Decorating Show is open from 9:30am to 4:00pm on 23 and 24 November. For more details and tickets visit www.paintshow.co.uk

GET A LITTLE EXTRA AT LEYLAND SDM
NEW MURAL FOR BEXHILL BREWERS DECORATOR CENTRES donated 20 litres of paint, brushes, rollers, and stabilising solution to help transform the walkway in Glyne Bay, Bexhill-on-Sea. W.Ave Arts is an independent non-profit organisation working with and for the local community to transform spaces for the next generation. In their latest project, W.Ave Arts collaborated with local artists Luke Barbants and apprentice Joe Zillwood to create a mural on the Network Rail bridge in Glyne Bay. Luke Brabants is a multidisciplinary artist whose work can be seen up and down Britain predominantly on vehicles and walls which have been commissioned by clients who want to stand out from the boring and ordinary. Being given the opportunity to paint the Glyne Gap bridge will be a huge legacy and he hopes it will inspire other people to get creative, and maybe see art with spray cans as just another medium to create with rather than something that comes with bad connotations. The bridge is often vandalised which requires a lot of maintenance from the local community. To make the area more appealing, the project was proposed to deter vandalism through the medium of art. The mural design is heavily inspired by a family of seals who have resided in this area and have become quite the Bexhill celebrities! Other sea life is also featured giving a spectacular underwater theme. Many organisations and members of the community got involved to donate scaffolding, supplies, and time to ensure the mural’s completion. The result is fantastic, and we look forward to seeing future projects!

MANY CANS HELP OUT CHARITY CAMPAIGN
BRADITE ARE PROUD to support a unique commemoration project that has raised £66,000 in the last year for the British Legion Poppy Appeal. Standing with Giants is a non-profit organisation that creates life size WWI soldier silhouettes that can be sited temporarily in open spaces. The silhouettes, each six feet tall depicting a ‘British Tommy’ with his rifle slung over his shoulder, are made from a plastic/aluminium composite material derived from recycled signage from building sites. Bradite donated their One Can primer/finish paint to the project, helping protect the many hundreds of figures now being made. The project also makes two-foot diameter poppy wreaths which have been painted in One Can. “I was contacted last Autumn by the project which was already using One Can supplied through the Abingdon branch of builders merchants, Brewers,” explained Bradite’s National Sales Manager James Burton. “We were asked if we could help and are happy to provide our product for the next phase of the project over the coming year, and of course, it was our privilege to help the community remember our fallen heroes.”

It also offers a trade quality heavy duty gauge metal frame, with blue end caps and a nylon cage, plus a comfortable handle which has both threaded and bayonet extension pole connectivity.

can easily ruin a job and usually make the task take much longer to execute. In today’s throwaway world many tools are simply binned because they are no longer fit for purpose. However, good tools are worth preserving and I’ve always found that while sharpening is a chore it is a well worth doing. The G Sharp-Tools Sharp Edge is a #gamechanger and it has revolutionised how I sharpen my tools. Designed by a cabinet maker, Gervase Evans, and made in Britain, Sharp Edge easily sharpens chisel and plane blades from 3mm up to 85mm wide, but in a completely different way. Use the blade spacer in any of the six slots to centre what you're sharpening, select which diamond hone grit grade and attach to the magnetic hinged holder. Angles of 23° to 90° are selectable by loosening the knob, then pull or push the slidable hone support with thumb indent and lock back in. The fun part is simply sliding the tool carriage back and forth after engaging the tools blade to the diamond hone. Keep it firmly held against the blade spacer, and use the ‘backing off’ tool with a fine grit hone to remove any burr. Check and repeat as required.

If you are fed up with spending time chiseling out old paint from your scuttle, or you don’t want to use bag liners as they end up in land fill sites, then the all new Scuttle8 Liners are the answer. Hybrid MF Rail Square @hybridrailsquare
www.fctools.co.uk
Like many PDA Members, I carry out woodworking on my jobs and the one thing I’ve learned over the years is always invest in the best tools you can afford. Cutting sheet materials with a rail saw is incredibly fast, however this needs to be done accurately. The MF Hybrid Rail Square is the creation of Frank Cochrane from Glasgow, and it is created from a single block of aircraft aluminium with a two-point locking system. The MF Hybrid Rail Square is without question the most accurate tool I own. I use mine with a Festool plunge saw and guide rail, but this version can be also be used with Mafell, Bosch, Makita, Flex and Triton guide rails. When cutting material, the MF Hybrid Rail Square keeps the guide rail completely square to the straight edge you work from (ensure this edge is straight!), guaranteeing accuracy from a single pencil mark. What I also like about it are the other features such as a ‘slip-edge lip’ on the sides which provide support to the tool whilst in use, which stops it tipping downwards. MFT bench dogs are also available enabling the tool to be used on a pre-formed edge, or with an MFT table at both 45° and 90° angles.

Easy does it Tips for working with delicate surfaces Whether it’s a vintage wallpaper or a historic staircase, working with delicate surfaces can be a daunting task if the right masking preparations aren’t in place. As experts in masking solutions, Q1 and Wesley Knight of WKPD offer some tips on how to achieve the perfect finish even on the most sensitive of areas... The first thing you’ll need to consider when working with sensitive surfaces is how you’re going to protect the area you’re focusing on. If it’s a heritage or historical property, chances are any mistakes will be difficult to undo and it could result in time and money trying to rectify any mistakes. “To make sure you get it right first time, you’ll want to know what type of masking solution type is right for the job”, says veteran painter and overspray from your roller. It’s important to leave it to dry for as long as possible before you start peeling the tape away.
