Werner increases UK manufacturing investment

Werner is increasing its UK manufacturing capabilities with the announcement it will be producing some of its most popular lines at its Maldon facility in Essex. It marks a significant increase in the number of products Werner will manufacture in the UK, a major statement of intent in demonstrating Werner’s confidence in the British market.

Among products being manufactured at Maldon are Werner’s range of TradePro extension ladders. Constructed in high-grade aluminium and designed to ensure maximum performance for users on site, the EN131-certified TradePro range of D-Rung and Square Rung ladders are ‘best in class’ products for Werner and

a popular choice among tradespeople for their durability and versatility.

Added to the existing number of lines already manufactured in the UK:

• Werner TradePro D-Rung Triple Extension Ladders

• Werner X4 ExtensionPLUS Combination Ladders

• Werner Roof Ladders

Jan Zmrzlik at Werner said, “We are very happy to confirm the increase in manufacturing at our factory in Maldon. This is a hugely exciting moment for our UK operations and signals the strength of our confidence in the country’s market strength.

“All of the product lines that are now being manufactured at Maldon are designed in the UK too, meaning we can offer a completely ‘British made’ solution to a variety of trades.

“This is very much the first phase of a planned scaling-up of our UK operations, so we look forward to being able to communicate more on this in due course.”

Tool theft on the rise again

UK businesses face bill of £3.5bn

VOLKSWAGEN COMMERCIAL VEHICLES’ latest survey has revealed that tool theft from UK van drivers is on the rise, with more than 1 in 4 (28%) falling victim to the crime in 2024 – up from 19% the year before.

The survey of 1,000 UK van drivers found that the value of the stolen tools rose by over 40%, averaging £2,433 last year. Over a quarter (27%) of incidences of tool theft were valued at £3,500 and above, compared to just 10% exceeding that value in 2023.

As a result, UK businesses now face a £3.5 billion bill in stolen equipment in 2024.

On top of the financial burden that stolen equipment brings, the majority (86%) of tool theft victims were forced to take unplanned downtime while they restocked their vans and repaired locks, resulting in an average of 3.97 days off work. 1 in 5 (20%) of respondents had to take over a week off work in 2024. This is compared to just 1.90 days the year before, highlighting the significant disruption that the increase in tool theft is bringing. With 36% of survey respondents identifying the cost of living crisis as a major stressor when thinking about work, this increase in tool theft comes at a time when UK businesses are already feeling the squeeze. What’s more, van drivers who fall victim to tool theft can also fine themselves at risk of an increase in future

insurance premiums, meaning the financial implications can go far beyond the cost to replace the stolen tools.

This is why Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles works with van drivers to keep them, their tools, and their businesses safe. The New Transporter received the Euro NCAP Platinum Award for its outstanding safety design and capabilities. In addition to its strong baseline, the New Transporter offers a range of optional features to improve security, including an anti-theft alarm system, interior monitoring, back-up horn, and towing protection. When activated, the anti-theft alarm system sounds the horn and activates the hazard lights, drawing attention and alerting bypassers.

John Ricardo-Neto, Head of Product Planning at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles said, “Tool theft remains a huge issue for van drivers and businesses in the UK, and it’s concerning to see the number of incidences and the scale of their impact continuing to rise. We encourage van drivers to take extra precautions – via our theft prevention technologies, ensuring tools are always well secured and vehicles parked in well-lit, CCTV-monitored areas –so that tradespeople can focus on what really matters.”

It’s child’s play with Bradite One Can

A SHOPFRONT IN the Buckinghamshire town of Stony Stratford has a vibrant new look thanks to a thorough makeover using Bradite One Can.

Painter and decorator Michael Johnson transformed the worn, flaking frontage to provide a bright, welcoming look for a new business taking over the premises for the Tots and Dots children’s play café.

“There was a lot of preparation needed with filling and other repair work, and then I used One Can”, explained Michael, who took full advantage of the coating’s all-in-one formulation as primer and finish.

He had discovered One Can on an earlier, smaller job, but recognised its qualities for providing a durable, protective finish on the town centre shopfront, selecting a pastel pink for the contract. Touch dry in 30 minutes and with recoats possible after just 1 hour, it’s the ideal water-based, single-pack product for exterior projects like these.

“One Can is just lovely to use and dries so quickly,” he says, “I’m so pleased how it turned out and I can’t wait to visit Tots and Dots with my family.”

Fleet transformed with fully electric trucks and H VO fuel to cut emissions by over 50%

AKZONOBEL HAS ANNOUNCED the deployment of its first 100% electric trucks and urban trailer fleet together with a nationwide hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) powered fleet in partnership with XPO Logistics.

The initiative will cut the company’s transport emissions by over 50% and save approximately 3,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually, directly supporting AkzoNobel’s SBTi to reduce Scope 1 emissions by 50% by 2030, against a 2018 baseline.

Measurable environmental impact

In this landmark move, AkzoNobel will become the first paint brand in the UK to deploy large-scale electric heavy goods vehicles (eHGVs) under the government’s ZEHID programme. The transformation will deliver carbon savings in three key areas...

• Vehicle efficiency improvements: 300 tonnes CO2 reduction

• Euro 6 engines and electric vehicles: 700 tonnes CO2 reduction

• HVO fuel adoption: 2,000 tonnes CO2 reduction

These combined savings of 3,000 tonnes annually equate to removing more than 650 average passenger cars from UK roads for a year.

Dualfuel strategy for all operations

Two fully electric trucks will operate from AkzoNobel’s Slough site to serve London and the surrounding areas. These vehicles will deliver a 100% reduction in direct CO2 emissions while in operation and contribute to lower noise and air pollution. Complementing this, the HVO-powered fleet will operate

nationwide, ensuring significant reductions in carbon footprint across both long and short-haul journeys.

The fleet investment is the latest milestone in AkzoNobel’s Paint the Future initiative, which places sustainability-driven innovation as a key pillar of the business. Building on existing progress, with 100% of purchased electricity used in its UK own operations throughout 2024 being renewable and achieving a 41% reduction in scope 1 carbon emissions that same year, this step demonstrates how AkzoNobel is delivering on its commitment to a more sustainable future.

What’s more, the fleets will deliver new cutting-edge lowemission products, including 99.9% VOC-free Dulux Easycare and Dulux Walls & Ceilings alongside improved water-based Dulux One Coat Satin, helping customers to improve their environmental credentials too.

Kathryn Ledson, MD Decorative Paints UKI at AkzoNobel comments, “The launch of our new electric and HVO-powered fleets is a proud milestone in our sustainability journey. At AkzoNobel, we are committed to painting the future by taking bold forward-thinking action – not only though the innovative and sustainable products we create for our customers, but also through how we function as a business. This investment is a clear demonstration of how we are delivering on our science-based targets and taking responsibility for our impact. The announcement builds on our strong history of embedding sustainability at the heart of our operations, product portfolio and partnerships”.

AkzoNobel’s fleet changes are being delivered in partnership with XPO Logistics, a leading provider of innovative and sustainable end-to-end logistics across Europe. XPO is at the forefront of decarbonising freight, offering advanced multimodal transport solutions and expertise in alternative energies to help customers build more sustainable supply chains. Their proven track record in sustainable logistics makes them an ideal partner for AkzoNobel as it transforms its transport operations to cut emissions and support their journey to net zero.

Dan Myers, Managing Director – UK and Ireland, XPO Logistics, comments: “AkzoNobel and XPO Logistics are united by a belief that real progress is built on action, not aspiration. By delivering measurable, large-scale emissions reductions through our logistics partnership, we’re turning shared values into shared results.”

Creating

Impasto is made of clay and acrylic resin, is tintable with UTCs and is quick drying, compatible with all acrylic materials as well as waxes and solvent topcoats. This makes it a fun and versatile material to work with, and a myriad of finishes can be achieved.

Impasto can be applied over most water based paints and primers – just avoid applying it to something too absorbent such as contract matt as this will cause it to create tiny bubbles.

In this instance we just used un-tinted neutral plaster. Using a deep pile roller roll the plaster onto the surface and then go back into it again to create some good peaks.

This finish was created by us at recent event, and it was so quick and easy and admired by so many, I felt we had to pass it on.

Leave the plaster for a little while, until it starts to dry, and using a small trowel or a wide filling blade, knock down the texture.

Immediately take some stiff scrunched up plastic (supermarket bags or similar weight) and press this into the surface to create some more variation in texture. Leave this to dry, it usually takes about 2 hours. Sand the surface to remove any rough areas and remove the dust.

Apply plaster with a deep pile roller and go back over it to create good peaks. >

You don’t have to use a metallic wax over the texture, you could use paints or glazes, and create multiple different looks in every colour imaginable.

Impasto was a material I created for the decorative painter, on our website there is a techniques sheet that shows a few more finishes and gives a break down of how to achieve them. It is unbelievably flexible and hardwearing and can be used on kitchen cabinets and furniture as well as walls.

This is the shortest ‘how to’ I think I have ever written and that just shows how easy it is! I hope this inspires you to try finishes with textures in the future.

This finish is created with Whitson’s Impasto Plaster and two of the Stucco Italiano Metallic Bee’s Wax colours, available online from: www.caitwhitson.com/product/whitsons-impasto-plaster/ www.caitwhitson.com/product-category/topcoats-for-lime/

Once this is complete take a damp natural sponge, and sponge in some extra colour to create movement and intensify areas that have come up a little lighter. Pat off the excess with a clean cloth and lightly blend in any bits that look too bold; be careful about how heavy handed you are as the new wax can reactivate any drying wax below.

Once the wax hardens buff it to a nice high lustre, and once, dry not only is it washable, but the surface is beautifully tactile. n

Fully blended and buffed.

THE RHYTHM OF BLUES

Feel the r hy thm

For the first time ever, Dulux has unveiled three Colours of the Year. For 2026, the paint manufacturer is asking decorators and their customers to dance to the Rhythm of Blues™ with a harmonious collection of signature indigos that can be used to create spaces that feel harmonious and free.

Over the last three decades, the Dulux Colour of the Year has been chosen through extensive trend research by colour experts at the AkzoNobel Global Aesthetic Centre and international design professionals. The 2026 selection, Rhythm of Blues™, has been chosen to provide a versatile trio of colours that reflect any customer’s needs.

The three tones capture the expansive nature of blue to help decorators create spaces that make customers feel connected and comfortable. From the timeless, soothing qualities of Mellow Flow™ to the meditative, calm and grounding nature of Slow Swing™, and the vibrant, exciting and uplighting Free Groove™ there is

a shade to suit any brief. Used individually or in combination, the Colours of the Year 2026 offer decorators and their customers inspiration and the flexibility to bring colour to any space.

Dawn Scott, Dulux Trade Senior Colour Designer said, “With the Rhythm of Blues™ collection, we have captured the different ways colour shapes people’s needs. From creating moments of quiet reflection to sparking energy and creativity, each of the three colour stories offers decorators and their customers inspiration.

Dulux has created three complementary palettes that provide effective and versatile colour combinations for interior projects. Each palette is designed to reflect a specific mood and can therefore be used anywhere to bring the customer’s vision to life.

A Slow Colour Story

Natural shades of blue and brown, this family of wintery earth tones can help create calm spaces that quieten the mind and feel restorative. This palette works particularly well in spaces where people need respite from noise and stress. The meditative dark blue is the hero in this palette.

A Flow Colour Story

Here, the family of blues, with airy sky blue as the hero, is joined by warm and tactile earth shades of terracotta, brick and clay. These familiar, natural colours can help create spaces that feel comfortable and harmonious. They work well in areas where people want to come together.

“For example, the Flow Colour Story lends itself perfectly to residential spaces. When it comes to making a house a home, it's important to create an inviting, warm and cosy feel in a space. The natural earthy tones balance with indigo blues for a contemporary take on cosy, making them perfect for creating welcoming spaces where people can relax and entertain family and friends.”

Marianne Shillingford, Dulux Creative Director and Colour Expert at AkzoNobel, explains, “Blue has been the world’s favourite colour for years, but it’s far from one note. It delivers a sense of fluidity, relief, stillness and freedom, which is exactly what’s needed in today’s fast-paced world.

“It’s roots in nature give us something to connect to, as well. When we see light blues like Mellow Flow™, we

might think of soothing springs or sunrise skies, for example, or be reminded of the deep ocean’s chilled stillness with a dark blue like Slow Swing™.

Whereas Free Groove™ offers a more intense heat, like that of summer pool parties. Some of us are slowing the beat to recharge and find balance, while others are looking to crank up the volume and create spaces that are simply fun.

“Rhythm of Blues gives us the opportunity to do both – it’s a family of colours that can soothe, steady or excite, depending on how you play it. This collection offers colours you can find peace in, and colours you can dance to, to offer endless possibilities for changing the pace of your space.” n

Collaboration, craft and the TaskHer touch

Designing with Purpose Designing with Purpose

As an interior designer managing renovation projects end-to-end, I’m always looking for tradespeople who bring not just technical skill, but collaboration and flexibility.

For a recent home transformation in Clapham, I partnered with TaskHer, and the result was one of the most seamless and energising builds I’ve worked on.

Before I became a designer, I started my career as a rocket engineer. I know what it’s like to be one of the only women in the room, constantly having to ‘prove’ yourself. As I transitioned into managing renovations, I realised that dynamic hasn’t disappeared.

I immediately clicked with TaskHer. I loved that they were championing tradeswomen and making that process more visible, approachable and professional. It wasn’t just about skills – it was about mindset. There’s an ease and mutual respect. They treated me as the project lead, because I was. No second-guessing, no talking around me, just collaboration. It was refreshing.

This project involved reimagining a family home that had gone a bit grey – physically and emotionally. The brief was to bring back joy, using a family trip to Miami as inspiration: sunshine, bold colour, energy and fun. We used Bauhaus-inspired colour blocking, geometric transitions and standout features like a pink reading nook and a colour-drenched disco bedroom.

I always provide precise visuals, but my process also involves a lot of real-time adjusting: taping lines, checking sightlines and reworking proportions on site. With TaskHer, that hands-on, problem-solving approach felt seamless. The decorators came in genuinely curious and excited about the creative direction, and the electrical work made a big difference too. From mood lighting to feature fittings, every detail helped bring the personality of the design to life. The collaboration across trades was smooth, creative and professional.

Decorator Sharon, designer Justine, electrician Erin, and carpenters Frances and Martha, who all worked on the Clapham house project.

I’ve worked with tradesmen too, and many have been fantastic collaborators. But, as a female designer and project lead, I’ve had moments where my instructions were ignored in favour of my (male) client’s opinion… even when he didn’t know anything about the brief. With tradeswomen, there’s often less need to explain or defend what I do. I’m not just the ‘decorator with ideas’, I’m the designer, project manager and the creator of the whole plan. And that’s taken seriously.

There are always practical hurdles with renovation projects: one challenge came while painting a bed - the

supplier said there was no coating on it, but the special furniture paint just wouldn’t hold. The decorator flagged it immediately, worried it might peel with use. So we paused, talked it through, and ended up wrapping the surface in vinyl instead. It was a simple solution, but one that required teamwork and flexibility. Even with detailed drawings, things shift once you’re on site. We took time to re-measure, test placements with masking tape, adjust scale… and sometimes lie on the floor to check sightlines! That openness to tweak, test and co-create made all the difference. n

Being good to the environment is good for business

The National Trade Body for the painting and decorating sector, the Painting and Decorating Association (PDA), has highlighted the sustainability strides made by a Gloucestershire business, by creating an online case study showcasing its environmental credentials.

The PDA has featured P & S Timbrell Decorators Ltd, based in Dursley, in a new case study that shines a spotlight on PDA members who commit to drive down waste through its Paint Green initiative.

P & S Timbrell Decorators Ltd was an early adopter of the Paint Green Scheme, which encourages PDA members to reduce, reuse or recycle excess paint and paint containers yearon-year.

Stephen Timbrell is a partner at P & S Timbrell, he said, “Paint Green is a great initiative by the PDA to encourage our industry to think more about the environmental impact of painting and offer an easy way to make a real difference.

“Becoming a member of the Paint Green scheme demonstrates to our customers that we are serious about the disposal of our used tins and waste recycling.

“It is crucially important for all businesses regardless of their size to play their part in combatting climate change and reducing the impact they have on our planet.

“We all make decisions every day, whether it’s the choice of an oil-based or water-based product, or in choosing between a recognised ‘green’ option or a ‘plastic paint’, and each time we should consider not just the price and convenience but also the environmental impact it may have. All these small changes can add up and make a big difference.”

“For many years we have had a company environmental policy and published it on our website. In doing this we have set ourselves targets and stated our intentions to try and reduce our carbon footprint through initiatives like the Paint Green scheme.

“We have also tried out many new ideas as they’ve come on to the market, like switching to using only caulk in ‘foils’ for example and so reducing our plastic cartridge waste.”

Launched in November 2022, the Paint Green campaign is a sustainability initiative which encourages PDA members to commit to drive down waste paint and paint containers, those who take the Paint Green pledge can display the Paint Green logo on their online platforms, stationery and vehicles. The initiative aims to dovetail with existing paint and container reuse and recycle schemes and help customers identify painters and decorators who are committed to protecting the planet.

The Painting and Decorating Association (PDA) was established following a merger of the Painting & Decorating Federation and the British Decorators’ Association, which was originally founded in 1894.

The PDA is Britain's largest trade body that is dedicated to the painting and decorating trade. Leftover paint could fill 20 olympic pools

New research from Dulux and the Community RePaint network has revealed that the average UK home has over four cans of unused paint, collectively enough paint to fill 20 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

The research comes as Community RePaint opens its 100th network member, making it more accessible than ever before and enabling more people to donate their leftover paint and benefit the local community.

With one third of homeowners purchasing paint in the last six months, 65% have either accidentally or purposely bought more paint than required. This is despite tools like the Dulux Paint Calculator which quickly and accurately estimates exactly how much paint you need. The average leftover paint can remains unused for 4.3 years, with one in ten leaving paint cans for over a decade. Additionally,

nearly a quarter (23%) do nothing with leftover paint whilst nearly a fifth (17%) of respondents admit to keeping old paint simply because they do not know what else to do with it.

As paint waste is clearly a growing issue in the UK, it is important to educate consumers on how they can give their leftover paint a new life by encouraging circularity and reuse.

Since its inception, Community RePaint has redistributed 5.4 million litres of paint to individuals and community projects and it continues to grow nationwide. Alongside redistributing paint, the network also remanufactures it to produce its own ReColour paint. n

How to use Community RePaint

Simply use the postcode search on the Community RePaint website to find your local scheme, and find out how and where to pass on leftover or surplus paint for reuse from your home or business.

If you need 60 or more litres of affordable high-quality paint delivered to your organisation, consider ReColour as an option. ASFA AR AST MOUR FOR

Dead Flat

Recommended with Farrow & Ball Wall & Ceiling Primer & Undercoat for interior walls & ceilings and Farrow & Ball Wood Primer & Undercoat for use on interior woodwork.

Dead Flat® is multi-surface and can be used across walls, woodwork and radiators for a full room transformation. An ultra-matt finish with just a 2% sheen, Dead Flat delivers a beautiful look with unmatched versatility. It is suitable for walls, woodwork, and metal. Developed over five years, the formula uses a breakthrough blend of ingredients that combine high-performance durability with Farrow & Ball’s signature depth of colour.

• Washable and wipeable

• Available in all F&B colours

• Ideal for seamless, full-room finishes

On previously painted walls ensure all surfaces are sound, clean, dry and free from dirt, grease and other contamination. Apply one coat of Primer & Undercoat, in the correct colour tone for your top coat (and allowing a minimum of four hours drying time between coats). Then follow with two coats of your chosen colour to promote adhesion and full colour depth.

Modern Emulsion

Also recommended with Wall & Ceiling Primer & Undercoat to seal the surface you are working on. You should have a full solid coat of Primer and Undercoat before applying your topcoat, to ensure that your chosen Farrow & Ball finish sticks to it fully, is evenly absorbed and has a smooth and even finish with rich depth of colour.

Perfect for kitchens, bathrooms, and high-traffic areas. This robust emulsion has a 7% sheen and includes anti-mould ingredients for extra protection in humid spaces.

• Class A scrub rating

• Low-sheen, contemporary look

• Washable and moisture-resistant

Modern Eggshell

With a mid-sheen finish (40%), this hardwearing paint is ideal for interior woodwork, kitchen cabinetry, and even floors. It offers reliable protection without compromising on style. Alongside our new Flat Eggshell this offers the same level of durability at a mid-sheen level.

• Suitable for wood, metal, and concrete

• Highly durable with a sleek, modern finish

Recommended with Wood Primer & Undercoat for use on interior woodwork, wooden floors and metal. For use on unsound masonry and interior concrete floors use Farrow & Ball Masonry & Plaster Stabilising Primer.

As before, using a Primer and Undercoat seals the surface you are working on. Do not over dilute the mist coat as this will reduce their opacity, causing an uneven finish and incomplete colour development. Before applying the top coat, consider if a second, undiluted undercoat is needed to achieve full opacity.

Full Gloss

With its mirror-like 95% sheen, Full Gloss remains the most reflective and hard-wearing finish in our range. It is ideal for both interiors and exteriors. Note, it is not suitable for plastic or exterior decking or pressure treated wood. Recommended with Wood Primer & Undercoat on woodwork, wooden floors and metal. For best results make sure surfaces are in a sound condition, clean, dry and free from any surface contamination, such as dirt, dust, grease, mould and loose/ friable material. The surface should also be lightly sanded to create a slight texture for better adhesion, and then any resulting dust wiped away.

• Use on wood, metal, or even walls when sprayed

• Achieve a high-style, lacquered look

• Prepping the surface is key as gloss highlights imperfection

Resinous or knotty wood should always be suitably prepared. For more severe knots, consider using a knotting solution or an aluminium-based wood primer or even completely remove the knot and replace with a wooden plug.

Estate Emulsion

Our original water-based emulsion delivers a chalky matt finish with a delicate 2% sheen. Best for low-traffic areas and period properties.

Limewash

A breathable, traditional finish for lime-plastered or exterior walls. Applied in multiple coats, it creates a characterful, broken colour effect. Best applied by a skilled decorator.

Casein Distemper

An ultra-matt, fully breathable finish made with natural ingredients. Ideal for historic buildings, ornate plasterwork, and decorative mouldings.

Choosing the right floor paint: A professional’s guide

TYPES • USES • KEY DIFFERENCES

Choosing the right floor paint can make the difference between a long-lasting, professional finish and a job that fails. The wrong product can lead to peeling, scuffing, chemical damage, or unsafe surfaces for your customers. This guide breaks down the main types of floor paints available, from single-pack to two-pack and explains when and where to use them.

The main differences

Single pack paint

Typically a type of paint that comes ready to use, ideal for low traffic and domestic use.

• Easy to apply

• Lasts up to 4 years (dependant on traffic)

• Suitable for foot and light truck traffic

• Lower price point

Two-pack paint

Requires the mixing of two separate components before application, such as a base and a hardener.

• Higher durability and chemical resistance

• Suitable for warehouses or factories

• Up to 10 - 15 years

• Higher price point

PainntGuar G rd™ d™

Prote The U T P Ran ction ltimate P nge aint rd g

Pros

• Easy water cleanup

• Quicker recoat times

• Lower odour and eco-friendlier

Single pack water-based

Low-VOC, lower odour alternative to solvent-based single-pack paints.

Best for: Schools, hospitals, food prep areas, and residential interiors where air quality and low odour is more critical such as confined and indoor spaces.

Cons

• Dependant on application conditions: temperature and humidity

• Sometimes less durable

• Surface preparation critical

•Can wear quickly under heavy traffic

Single pack anti-slip versions

Both solvent and water-based single pack paints can be supplied with an anti-slip aggregate, better products will have the correct size aggregate pre-mixed.

Where to use: Ramps, steps, wet areas.

Consideration: Anti-slip surfaces improve safety but can be harder to clean, so advise clients accordingly. For example, we wouldn’t recommend using an anti-slip floor paint with a heavy aggregate in an industrial kitchen that requires a lot of cleaning.

Pros

• Much tougher than single-pack systems

• Good abrasion resistance

• Lower VOCs than solvent-based two-packs

• Longer pot-life (time to apply the product)

Two pack water-based

A two-component system (resin + hardener) that chemically cures, forming a tougher finish.

Best for: Warehouses, showrooms, car garage, and medium-duty factory floors.

Cons

• Requires correct mixing of components before application

• Slightly higher cost and skill level needed

• Dependent on conditions: temperature and humidity, eg. surface should be above 10ºC during application and curing

Two pack anti-slip versions

Pros

• Easy to apply

• Good adhesion to bare concrete and compatibility with existing coatings

• Relatively fast drying

• Affordable option

Single pack solvent-based

Traditional, ready-to-use paint that uses a solvent as the carrier.

Best for: Garages that are used for storage purposes, light commercial spaces, and workshops with light to moderate traffic.

Cons

• Lower chemical and abrasion resistance compared to two-pack systems

• Can wear quickly under vehicle or heavy foot traffic

Pros

• Superior durability and chemical resistance

• Excellent gloss retention

• Withstands forklifts and heavy machinery

Two pack solvent-based

A two-component epoxy or polyurethane system with a solvent carrier.

Best for: High-traffic industrial areas, workshops, and chemical plants.

Cons

• Higher VOC content, requires good ventilation

• More complex application process often with a shorter pot-life

> >

• Polyurethane systems have exceptional chemical resistance

Anti-slip is also available in two-pack epoxy systems. Some products have the aggregate pre-mixed into the paint, giving a uniform textured finish with simple roller application. Others require broadcasting a graded aggregate onto the wet base coat, then sealing with a second coat. This gives you choice on the aggregate size, the course the finish the better grip, but the harder to clean

Two pack solvent-free resin-based

100% solids epoxy, no solvent, no VOCs.

Best for: Food-grade areas, industrial garages, factories, production, clean rooms, and environments requiring a seamless, hygienic finish.

Pros

• Extremely durable, thick, and hard-wearing

• Zero VOC, ideal for sensitive environments

• Can achieve self-levelling, seamless finishes

Cons

• More expensive than other systems

• Requires careful mixing and precise application conditions

• Often has a shorter pot life, sensitive to temperature (approx. 30 minutes at 20ºC)

Polyaspartic Floor Coating

A fast-curing coating based on polyaspartic polyurea technology. Best for: Car showrooms, warehouses, retail spaces, and any environment where a rapid return to service is critical (similar to a ‘fast cure’ epoxy).

Pros

• Fast cure — floors can sometimes be returned to service within a day or so

• Excellent UV stability, will not yellow over time

• High chemical and abrasion resistance

Cons

• Higher cost than conventional epoxies

• Pot life is short, requiring efficient application

• Surface preparation is critical for proper adhesion

Application Tips for Professionals

• Surface Prep is Everything: diamond grinding, or acid etching may be needed for proper adhesion onto bare concrete.

• Moisture Testing: Check for dampness in the slab, moisture can ruin adhesion and cause paint to lift.

• Mix Thoroughly: For two-pack systems, follow manufacturer ratios exactly, uncured paint can cause issues with curing.

• Observe Cure Times: Avoid early traffic to prevent marking or peeling.

• Safety First: Ensure proper PPE and ventilation, especially with solvent-based systems.

• Take special care if coating power floated surfaces; ensure a good ‘key.’

Introducing Flat Eggshell:

Making Tax Digital

How will it affect the self-employed?

Keeping track of finances is challenging at the best of times, particularly when you’re self-employed and working long days. For many painters and decorators, the admin can end up squeezed in after hours, and the annual tax return can be left to the last minute.

But from April 2026, the process is changing. HMRC is extending its Making Tax Digital (MTD) scheme for Income Tax Self Assessment, which means self-employed tradespeople will need to submit tax information digitally four times a year, using approved software. Now there isn’t just one deadline to meet,

What’s changing?

The government’s long-term aim is to phase out the traditional annual tax return. Instead, self-employed individuals, including decorators, plasterers and other sole traders will need to report earnings in real time. The introduction of MTD changes will be a phased approach as HMRC gears up for its new brand of reporting.

• From 6 April 2026, MTD will apply to individuals earning £50,000 or more per year

• From April 2027, the threshold will drop to £30,000

• Further reduction to £20,000 applicable from 5 April 2028

If you earn below these thresholds, you can choose continue with the current system until the deadlines, but you can also choose to opt in earlier should you wish.

How will it work?

There are three main changes to be aware of:

Digital record keeping

You’ll need to keep digital records of all income and expenses using HMRC-approved software. These could be tools like Xero, QuickBooks, or FreeAgent. Paper-based systems and manual spreadsheets will no longer be enough.

Quarterly submissions

Instead of filing once a year, you’ll submit updates every three months through your software. You won’t pay tax at this point, but you’ll receive an estimate of what you’ll owe, giving you a clearer picture of cash flow.

Final declaration

At the end of the tax year, you’ll submit a final return (known as the End of Period Statement), confirming your total income and expenses. Additional income, such as savings or dividends, must also be declared. There won’t be any changes to how you make payments for your tax liability. For the foreseeable future you’ll still have to submit a tax return as well, albeit using MTD compatible software, and this will then be settled through payments on account.

Penalties you should avoid

HMRC is introducing a points-based penalty system. Every time you miss a submission, you’ll receive a point. Reach a certain number of points, and this turns into a financial fine. Preparing early and keeping on top of deadlines will help you avoid unnecessary costs.

How should I prepare?

Preparing early will ensure a smooth transition and help you remain compliant. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

1 Assess your eligibility

2 Choose and transition to suitable accounting software if necessary

3 Review your current record-keeping and migrate any manual records to your new software

4 Train yourself on how to use the software

5 Establish a process for quarterly reporting to ensure you don’t forget

6 Speak to your tax advisor to clarify roles and responsibilities

Final thoughts

For many painters and decorators, tax is something you’d rather not think about until you have to. But with changes just around the corner, preparing now will make life easier further down the road. My advice is simple: take time to get your systems in place, understand the process, and don’t leave it to the last minute. If you’re unsure, talk to a trusted advisor - it will save you both time and money in the long run. n

TACKLING MOULD STEP-BY-STEP

When dealing with mould, it’s essential to use high-performance, reliable paint products you can trust. PermaWhite is the ultimate mould-resistant paint, specifically designed for high moisture areas like kitchens, bathrooms and laundry rooms. The tough, scrubbable formula resists cracking, peeling and blistering for up to 7 years, so there’s no need to return to a job at a later date. The quick-drying, water-based formula contains only trace VOCs (<0.1%), is touch dry in just 30 minutes and recoatable in two hours. As an added bonus, it’s tintable to any BS, NCS or RAL colour.

1 Prep the surface

In order to guarantee a long-lasting finish, proper paint preparation is key. After cleaning the surface with Zinsser Universal Degreaser & Cleaner, rinse with clean water and allow sufficient time to dry. Spray the stained area with Mould Killer & Remover and leave to dry. The water-based formula contains a fungicide that effectively removes dark stains caused by mould, fungus and algae, and is ideal for use in kitchens, bathrooms and other areas of high humidity. The Mould Killer & Remover has a handy trigger spray for hard-to-reach areas and can be used on tiles, wood, plaster, wallpaper and other interior surfaces.

2

Prime to perfection

Once the surface is prepared, apply B-I-N® AQUA, a groundbreaking, water-based high performance primer, that blocks stubborn water, mould and mildew stains, while acting as a barrier against all types of odours. With an ultra-low odour, B-I-N® AQUA contains only trace VOCs (<0.1%) and offers easy soap and water clean-up. The primer-sealer provides exceptional adhesion, without the need for sanding, and is recoatable in just 45 minutes (two hours for stains and knots).

3 Decorate and protect

Once your surface is prepped and primed, apply two coats of PermaWhite, leaving two hours drying time between coats. PermaWhite stops mould in its tracks, as it contains a biocide that protects the dried coating against fungal degradation. Scrubbable, durable and hard-wearing, the unique formulation is designed to resist cracking, peeling and blistering making it perfect for high-humidity areas subject to wear and tear. PermaWhite also has a Class 1 Scrub Rating for easy cleaning and is touch-dry in just 30 minutes. n

Painting Period Properties

The UK is blessed with such an array of period properties, from medieval and Tudor homes built 500 years ago or more, distinctive Georgian and Victorian houses all the way through to Edwardian and Arts and Crafts Eras. Whilst this provides a beautifully diverse range of properties, it is important to know which paint finishes are designed for heritage buildings.

If you have invested in a period property, it probably means that you have fallen in love with their original features, so it’s important to use decorating products that are sympathetic to the architecture.

It’s important to verify any listed building status or whether the properties fall within the boundaries of a Conservation Area, there are strict rules about everything from using suitable materials for repair and replacement through to permitted colours. So always consult the conservation officer at your local authority before you undertake any work.

Repair and maintenance

For restoration work, there could be a wide range of issues to look out for such as damp and mould, powdery or cracked walls, blown plaster, as well as damaged render and rotten wood.

Any existing paintwork may well have been painted with original paints, including lead paint, lime-based paint or distemper that must be considered before any redecoration can take place.

For rotten timber, Repair Care, has a good range of products suited to lasting repair of timber sash windows and various substrates.

Painting

> Exterior Finishes

Inside and outside, breathability of the surface is essential. Slate damp courses in brickwork only emerged in the Victorian era, but they weren’t compulsory and certainly aren’t as effective as modern damp-proof membranes.

Thankfully, there are a wide range of products suited to painting period properties thanks to their historically sympathetic ingredients.

Interior finishes

Zinsser Grade I is specially formulated for interior ceiling and wall decoration in converted churches and other period properties. Earthborn Claypaint is a luxurious, ultra matt finish product, suitable for interior walls and ceilings. The unique clay recipe results in a highly breathable and hard-wearing paint, eliminating emissions and smells.

Farrow & Ball also have a range of finishes designed for period properties. Casein Distemper has a breathable, permeable structure that is suited to plaster walls and ceilings, creating a very flat finish.

Soft Distemper is a very soft, powdery finish for interior plasterwork. Its blend of natural resin and minerals is designed to be easily removed, allowing detail to be preserved on intricate mouldings.

For more advice on decorating heritage properties, head into your local Brewers Decorator Centre

Earthborn Silicate Masonry Paint is a durable and highly breathable alternative to conventional masonry paints and limewash that dries to a classic, matt finish. It is highly weather resistant and can be used on porous mineral surfaces such as stone, masonry, concrete, pebbledash, plaster and sound silicate-based painted surfaces. It’s especially suitable for renovation projects.

Farrow & Ball Limewash is a historical finish for both interior and exterior walls and ceilings, bonding to the building itself to protect from the elements.

It’s a very flat matt finish and is highly breathable.

Brands such as Johnstone’s, ISOMAT and Sandtex also offer breathable masonry paint solutions that could be the ideal finish for your project.

Historical Paint Colours

Once you have found a suitable finish, have a think about the most appropriate colours to use.

Many paint brands celebrate heritage paint colours including collections from Dulux Heritage, Farrow & Ball, Little Greene and Mylands

Colour trends for 2026

Orla Turner at Valspar Trade takes a look at what could be ‘hot’ next year, so you can give the best advice to your customers, and how the materials that go into the paint can help meet these trends.

The latest trends aren’t just reserved for show homes and social media, they can have a very real influence on the schemes your customers may opt for, whether they’re committed to remaining on-trend or simply want to give their home a refresh.

Neutrals

Neutral shades are never too far away, remaining the go-to choice for bedrooms. Neutral doesn’t have to mean boring; it’s all about finding the perfect timeless shade that inspires calm and minimalism, all while feeling fresh and bright.

Expect to see a shift from cooler, grey tones to warm and creamy shades, such as our Alpaca Mittens, Speckled Eggs or Grey Berry, as part of a ‘comfort-first’ interiors trend. Plus, it’s time to wave goodbye to whites and greys as cream is back!

Yellows

The colour of sunshine, it’s no surprise that yellow is fast becoming a shade to watch in the interiors world. Used within bedrooms, living spaces and kitchens, it also remains a firm favourite for nurseries and playrooms.

Think rich, spicy tones that combine warm orange and yellow hues, like Royal Mews Gold and Sunset Spice, helping to tie in with the wider Mediterranean and artisanal home trend. While soft buttery yellows (think You Are My Sunshine) are also expected to remain popular for another year. Used confidently, they can bring warm and positivity to interior spaces, especially when paired with chalky off-whites.

A new green on the block

When green became the new millennial grey, it offered a welcome break to many. Looking ahead to 2026 and the green trend remains strong, with shades of teal predicted to be the next big thing. In fact, teal has been called out by global trend forecasters as the ‘Colour of the Year’, described by some as a ‘hidden gem’ and a ‘transformative teal’. This perfect blend of blue and aquatic green brings an air of freshness to any space, while also being warm enough to create a cosy look and feel.

Delivering the perfect colour match

It’s not just enough to advise on interior trends, you also need to have confidence in delivering the perfect colour. Of the components that make up paint, it is the pigment that holds the key to achieving a bright and true colour. This finely ground particle provides the whiteness, colour, coverage and bulk of paint. As well as the pigment volume concentration being key, it’s also about the quality of pigments used.

A perfect colour match also relies on the technology, so we’re also rolling out new MetaVue™ machinery across all TradePoint stores, providing breakthrough non-contact imaging spectrophotometer technology. Now, we can colour-match to even smaller (at least 2mm in diameter) and more complex (featuring multiple colours) sample sizes, introducing a new level of accuracy and making paint matching more reliable than ever.

New mural for Brick Lane

Trapped In Zone One, a community focused creative organisation based in East London has created another mural in London, this time celebrating the heritage of Brick Lane.

The inspiration for this mural was from the exhibition Brick Lane 1978: The Turning Point, which brought together 75 of Paul Trevor’s photographs for the first time, celebrating East London's Bengali activists of 1978. Brewers Aldgate donated Albany Paint to the project who have been supporting Trapped In Zone with various projects around London.

The project worked with residents of the Tower Hamlets community, specifically inclusive of locals with personal connections to Brick Lane and of diverse or working-class backgrounds.

www.brewers.co.uk

The mural was inspired by the colours of the Bangladesh flag using Albany Tuft with the central image featuring members of the Bangladesh Youth Front, Syed Mizan, Jamal Miah and Abdul Manik. Other images on the design includes a reference to the

The Shaheed Minar behind the central image is an interpretation of the national monument in Bangladesh, commemorating the martyrs of the Bengali Language Movement of 1952, and is now a place where London's Bengali community gathers to mark International Mother Language Day.

On the right-side there is the Brick Lane arch, designed by Meena Thakor and marking the entrance to ‘Banglatown’, erected in 1997 and below this is the unified message ‘We Are Stronger Together’ in Bengali text form to promote solidarity amongst all.

Bablu Miah, Founder of Trapped in Zone One said, “Thank you, Brewers, for helping us to succeed in reinvigorating a sense of community spirit and physical congregation, providing a creative outlet for the residents, and getting all age groups involved.

“Feedback from those involved repeatedly featured the importance of having spaces and methods to meet neighbours in such comfortable and activity-based settings, learning about their heritage of the borough in a safe and economically viable environment.” n

As Purdy marks 100 years since its first brush was made in Portland, USA, Senior Product Manager Andy Cummins explains the evolution of professional brushes and what this means for those in the trade today.

The evolution of paint brushes

While the humble paint brush still essentially does the same job as it did for painters and decorators a century ago, a lot has changed to make the work of professionals easier and to help deliver a high-quality finish. There have been developments in a range of areas, and these have ultimately made modern brushes what they are today.

The rise of synthetic filaments

The first area where there has been an evolution is the materials used. Traditionally brushes for painting and decorating were manufactured using animal hair, such as hog and ox hair. These natural bristles

performed well with traditional types of paint and especially oil-based paint.

The 20th century brought significant advances in materials, and synthetic filaments underwent a process of development that saw their performance improve considerably. It soon reached the point where these manufactured filaments could match or even exceed the results possible with natural bristle.

The other factor in the move away from natural bristle was the evolution of paints and coatings. Synthetic filaments are much more suitable for modern water-based paint, which has become the standard due to its improved environmental credentials.

In addition, a range of different synthetic filaments have been developed over the years, and modern brushes will use a mix of filaments to deliver the best possible performance, productivity, finish and longevity.

For example, the Purdy Pro Extra Monarch, designed for oil-based paint, has a blend of Chinex, Tynex and Orel synthetic filaments to deliver the required finish and hold 30% more paint than other brushes in the range.

New techniques for better quality

Another element of brushes that has evolved and improved is the manufacturing techniques. For example, today high-quality brushes will rarely lose filaments and spoil the hard work of creating a perfect finish.

However, this was a problem that plagued many generations of professional painters and while it sounds simple, it took a great deal of innovation to reliably achieve this. >

Tough on the job, gentle on the planet.

ECOPRO Matt Emulsion proves you can have minimal impact on the environment without compromising on quality. It’s your go-to choice for walls and ceilings in domestic and commercial projects.

In fact, ensuring brushes lost as few filaments as possible throughout their life was a key focus when the first Purdy brushes were manufactured in 1925.

The founder, S. Desmond Purdy, pioneered a new method that used a plug to press the filaments into the ferrule, holding them firmly in place. Modern Purdy brushes have built on decades of work in this area and now use a special bolstered epoxy adhesive alongside a wooden plug to ensure no filament loss.

Going global but thinking local

Another way in which brushes have evolved is to meet the specific needs of different global markets. Paint formulations vary in different parts of the world, so the brushes that work well in one country may not perform as well as with paints manufactured in another.

Leading manufacturers will tailor their range in each country to ensure professionals have the products that will work best with the paints and coatings they use every day.

Evolution continues

Although products have come a long way, development has not stopped. Leading manufacturers are still working to bring new products to the market that will help customers attain better results or improved productivity. This is achieved by consulting with professionals and even observing them work to understand how brushes and other products can be developed to help make their work easier.

It also involves a great deal of testing and feedback from professionals before a new product hits the shelves. This research and development is an ongoing process. For example, at Purdy, we constantly have several products going through the process at the same time and are always looking to innovate. In fact, since 2009, we have been granted an impressive 70 patents with more applications under review.

On the surface, brushes for painting and decorating might not appear to change much over the years but small and sometimes invisible evolutions have helped make the work of professionals easier and improved the finish that is possible.

Despite all the advances, some things have remained the same for decades. Purdy brushes have been handmade in Portland, USA by an experienced team of brushmakers using highquality materials for 100 years.
