Brewers support revamp of charity’s new home
BREWERS WERE THRILLED to support SASBAH (the Sussex Association for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus) with all the decorating materials required to revamp the outside of their brand-new home in Eastbourne Old Town. Brewers have been working with SASBAH for over 20 years, with service users employed to cut wallpaper samples for The Brewers Group.
Brewers worked with local decorators TSD to give the exterior of the building some much needed love. 50-litres of Albany Smooth Matt Masonry, Fungicidal Solution, Stabilising Solution and 7.5-litres of Albany Masterdec was donated so TSD could create a sound and fresh blank canvas for an exterior mural.
As a close friend of Brewers, Kerry Caffyn is a talented illustrator and artist who we worked with previously to develop an exclusive wallpaper collection.
Kerry took on the challenge of creating a mural on the front of the building to add some much-needed vibrancy.
A further 25-litres of Albany Smooth Matt masonry and Albany Masterdec was donated in a range of colour for Kerry to complete the mural in 130 hours!
SASBAH has over 50 years’ experience in supporting and developing the health, wellbeing and life opportunities of people with Spina Bifida, Hydrocephalus and other related conditions. As well as giving service users the skills and opportunities to find employment, SASBAH also provide job opportunities through their unique Saspire service. The new building will serve a space to be able to provide these services, including continuing to cut wallpaper samples for Brewers!

Marine mural makes a splash
AWARD-WINNING DESIGN duo, Lauren and Chloe Piper (known as @2sistersuk), recently partnered with Bradite to refresh the SMS Group headquarters, using One Can to create a nautical-themed mural. Bradite’s all-in-one primer, stain block and finish was the ideal, fastdrying product to facilitate quick completion, without compromising on the quality of finish.
For this project, the creative sisters opted for a range of blue tones inspired by the SMS Group’s marine engineering work. The mural was designed to provide a calm and complementary backdrop to their communal office space.
“One Can is super durable and saves us so much time on site,” Chloe explains. “The colours are reliable and high quality, which means that when we leave a job, we don’t have to worry about fading over time.”
This transformation was made possible by the launch of the new Bradite colour card. Designed to make colour selection easier, it showcases a palette of 54
shades from the worlds of interior design and exterior decoration, alongside some of the most popular standardised colours.
Chloe says, “The new colours were perfect for this nautical project. We love the consistency and opacity of Bradite paints, they save us time and deliver an amazing, highquality finish.”
Available in a matt and eggshell finish, One Can is a waterbased, low-odour coating that offers easy application by spray, roller or brush. It provides excellent adhesion to multiple interior and exterior surfaces, including most woods, metals and building plastics, making it an ideal coating for projects like this.
Having used One Can for a range of previous mural projects, it’s safe to say Bradite has become a firm favourite for the sisters. Lauren and Chloe state that they’d happily collaborate with Bradite again, having seen firsthand “just how amazing the paint is.”

With the decorating season upon us, tonal decorating is becoming a popular choice. Homeowners are increasingly looking for spaces that feel individual and expressive, while still keeping in mind the softer, neutral schemes we saw last year.
A new design appro ach f or 20 26
Tonal Decorating
At its core, tonal decorating is about selecting one key colour and building a palette around it. This may include lighter and darker variations of the same hue, or closely related shades that sit comfortably alongside one another. Walls, ceilings, door frames and skirtings are all treated as part of the same visual story, creating a seamless flow throughout the room.
www.bobbibeck.com
While bolder approaches such as colour drenching have gained attention in recent years, many homeowners are searching for something in between. Tonal decorating has emerged as a natural progression, layering varying shades of a single colour to create a room that feels calming and well considered.
“Tonal decorating offers a way to move beyond safe neutrals without jumping straight into bold colour,”
says James Mellan-Matulewicz, Creative Director at Bobbi Beck, “It gives homeowners the confidence to explore a range of shades, creating a look that feels timeless rather than driven by fleeting trends.”
Tonal decorating offers a number of benefits. It’s a versatile approach that allows homeowners to introduce stronger shades or texture through soft furnishings and materials. It also reduces the need to rely on high-impact trends, making tonal decorating a flexible and appealing choice for a wide range of spaces.
Wallpaper can play an important role in tonal decorating when used with restraint and intention. Choosing designs that sit within the same colour family as the surrounding paint allows the pattern to enhance the space rather than dominate it. Subtle patterned or textured wallpapers can add depth and a soft layer of colour, especially when tied into the wider colour scheme. It can be used as a feature wall or wrapped around the room for a fuller effect, becoming another layer within the overall palette.
“Wallpaper plays a key role in tonal schemes when it’s chosen carefully, sitting comfortably alongside painted surfaces. It’s about enhancing the overall look rather than creating contrast, which is why tonal decorating feels so relevant especially for modern homes”, says James
The success of tonal decorating lies in its attention to detail. Consistency of colour, careful consideration of light and the thoughtful use of texture all contribute to a finished scheme that feels both modern and timeless. By embracing this approach, homeowners can create interiors that are elegant, inviting and perfectly balanced, proving that tonal design is anything but flat. n

All designs are created in the Morris & Co. studio in Chiswick, London, and printed fabrics and wallpapers are made at the brand’s historic UK factories in Loughborough and Lancaster.
Morris & Co., the luxury heritage fabric and wallpaper design house founded by William Morris in 1861, presents The Unfinished Works, a series of designs born from exploration at The Huntington, California.
The unfinished works
From The Huntington’s remarkable library of documents come handcrafted and unmistakably original designs across wallpapers, borders, fabrics, weaves and embroideries. Previously incomplete sketches have been thoughtfully and meticulously uncovered and interpreted to bring new imaginings of hidden treasures to interiors.
Adding 26 new designs to the Morris & Co. portfolio, the design team has completed these pieces with accuracy and attention to detail, honouring the original documents with the detailed eye and creative talent of its modern-day studio. Every design has been repainted in the studio.
The collection palette references the richly pigmented colours in the archive logbooks to bring authentic colourisation to this series. From this collaboration comes new designs, finally completed and translated into exceptional products. Wallpapers echo the recognisable handwriting of Morris and Dearle, a series of borders makes a welcome return to the Morris & Co. portfolio, and lovingly crafted hidden designs have been translated into embroideries using intricate techniques for superior handcrafted finishes.
In respect of the unmistakable original craftsmanship, boundaries have been pushed, as we believe William Morris would, to celebrate craft at every turn, producing designs precisely as Morris and Dearle would have envisaged, using their notes and references, where available, as guidance.
Upholding and honouring a 164-year legacy, The Unfinished Works is an astounding series of designs, finally completed in a moment of art history for the company founded by William Morris, to be enjoyed for generations to come. n
A decade of learning, evolving and leading Celebrating 10 years of Dulux Academy
Dulux Academy opened its doors in March 2016 with the aim of providing professional training for the decorating trade. Its team of expert trainers have been educating and inspiring professionals ever since, helping to develop knowledge, skills and confidence at every stage of a decorator’s career.
We recently caught up with Vickie Mather to find out more about Dulux Academy’s amazing journey.
How did it all begin?
10 years ago the industry was changing rapidly, there was a need for education that went beyond products and focused on skills, knowledge and confidence. Dulux Academy was created to meet this demand. It was born from a simple but ambitious goal to support decorators and painting contractors with practical, relevant training that could genuinely help them grow their businesses.
What has Dulux Academy delivered over the last decade?
Dulux Academy has delivered thousands of training sessions to over 28,000 professionals across the UK.
Over the last 10 years, the small group of passionate trainers has evolved into a highly experienced team,
including associates who bring specialist skills. Courses range from core decorating skills to advanced spraying techniques, colour expertise and business-focused support, which means there is something for everyone. Online and blended learning also make training more accessible than ever. >
Professional decorator, Les Copestake, said: “I have completed several courses at Dulux Academy spanning a wide range of techniques, including spray, gilding, marbling, coving and wallpaper. I have attended some courses with members of my team and sent trainees on their own too.
“Every course has been worthwhile, and the Dulux Academy team have been great. They take their time when teaching and are so knowledgeable; I recite their tips and tricks on a daily basis.
“Once you have attended a couple of courses at Dulux Academy and get to know the staff, you feel like part of the family. That’s why I wouldn’t want to go anywhere else. I enjoy it there!
“If you’re considering paying for a course to up-skill in a certain area, then I would highly recommend doing so at Dulux Academy.”
< As well as professional decorators, Dulux Academy also supports those just starting out in their career. Its Apprentice Season Ticket provides opportunities for apprentices to develop specialist skills with industry-leading training courses to supplement formal learning and on-site training.
Over the years, Dulux Academy has picked up a collection of industry awards and a huge amount of positive feedback from those who have completed its training courses.
What
role do community and social media play today?
Community is a key part of the Dulux Academy experience. Decorators can connect at in-person events and online to share experiences, learn from one another and stay connected between courses. This sense of belonging has helped turn Dulux Academy into more than just a training provider, it’s a trusted hub for the trade.
What’s next for the Academy?
While celebrating the past 10 years is important, the focus is firmly on the future. New courses, new formats and exciting developments will ensure Dulux Academy continues to lead, innovate and support the trade for many years to come. n

The impact of paint on indoor air qualit y
Dulux has long been working to reduce solvent levels across many of its product ranges, from trim to emulsions and wood and metal paints. Although the pollution impact of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) from paint is very small (less than 2% of total VOCs emitted), Dulux Trade has created innovative solutions that reduce the impact on indoor air quality and lower carbon footprint (when compared to traditional formulations) without compromising product quality.
With 71% of professional decorators finding that clients regularly request sustainable paint options, water-based and 99.9% VOC free reformulations ensure a reduced impact on indoor air quality and lower carbon footprint compared to previous formulations, helping meet those demands, all whilst delivering an outstanding finish.
Formulated to support BREEAM and LEED requirements, these Dulux Trade products also give specifiers and contractors confidence that their choices meet recognised standards.
Making the invisible visible
Developed alongside leading air quality scientists, nooku indoor air quality monitors make the invisible visible. Providing real-time feedback on the quality of the air, from Great to Poor and Bad, the monitors track VOCs, humidity, temperature, CO2 and other airborne pollutants, revealing exactly what’s in the air.
https://nooku.co/
The air you breathe has a profound effect on your health and development, so it is crucial to ensure you are taking the steps necessary to optimise air quality. Indoor air quality can be up to five times more polluted than outdoor air, as VOCs can become trapped and linger in these environments. High VOC paints release chemicals that pollute indoor air and can cause headaches, respiratory issues, and long-term health risks. That’s why eliminating pollutants at the source matters, it helps create a healthier home throughout the decorating process.
Going to the source
Products in the Dulux Trade Quick Dry Satinwood range are water-based, reducing drying time for metal and wood trims by over 75% compared to solvent-based products. This ensures normal indoor air quality levels are restored quicker and maintained for longer compared to traditional trim paints.
As well as this, nooku readings when using Dulux Trade Diamond Matt compared to standard durable trade emulsion stayed significantly and consistently lower at Good levels instead of fluctuating to Poor and Bad readings while drying.
The unique formula of these products makes it safer for the long-term health of decorators, homeowners, and the planet without compromising on finish.

Are you EV ready?
Deliveries of new Battery Electric Vans (BEV) rose by 36.2% in 2025, hitting a new annual record of 30,169 registrations, despite the UK light commercial vehicle market decreasing by 10.3%.
90% of tradespeople would consider switching to an electric van when replacing their current vehicle, and now energy experts at Uswitch are encouraging them to ensure their property can support the additional electrical load when considering the switch.
Check if your home can support van charging
1. Assess your electrical capabilities
Before installing an EV charge point, ensure your home’s current electrical capacity can handle the additional load. Consult a qualified professional to assess whether your fuse box and wiring are suitable for EV charging.
2. Install an EV charger
Most electric vans come with a cable that can be plugged into a standard socket at home; however, this increases charging time. If you have access to off-street parking, installing a home wall box is the best solution. A dedicated charger can help you take advantage of cheaper off-peak electricity rates.
3. Switch to an EV supportive tariff
EV tariffs are specifically designed for drivers who want to charge at home and lower costs. Most electric car tariffs will require a smart meter to track usage. It is recommended that you compare options to find the best EV tariff to find one that suits your needs.
4. Be cautious of the increased energy demand
UK households may see a rise in overnight electricity usage compared to what they’re currently used to. To reduce strain, consider preconditioning the battery before charging, avoid quick charging, and avoid regularly charging the battery to 100%.
Independent testing shows that a large electric van carrying a full payload and towing retains only 76.94% of its unladen real-world range, representing a 31% reduction in driving distance per full charge. This means tradespeople charging such vans at home could see their electricity consumption and energy bills increase by a similar proportion.
As more tradespeople bring their electric van home to charge, Ben Gallizzi, energy expert at Uswitch, recommends checking whether homes can support the additional energy demand,
“It’s a positive sign seeing such a strong uptake in EV vans last year; however, tradespeople changing at home might see a rise in their energy use. It’s a good idea to check your setup and make sure your home is ready for the extra demand.” n

Interest in electric vans among tradespeople increased by 75% in September 2025 compared to 2024, driven by the advancements in range and appeal of zero-emission driving.
But which models best support the varied needs of tradespeople?
Electric Vans for dec or at or s
Tempcover have analysed popular small, medium and large electric vans from 2025 using official manufacturer-published specifications. Each model was scored out of 100 based on factors such as size, battery range and charging time, highlighting the electric vans that best fit the day-to-day needs of tradespeople.
Small Vans
A van to suit your needs
Match the battery range to a realistic working day: Base your battery needs on the miles you actually cover each day. Avoid paying for a range you won’t use, but don’t cut it too fine. Remember that heavy loads, cold weather and stop-start driving can all reduce real-world range.
The Ford E-Transit Courier tops the small electric van category. With a 10.7m turning circle and a 181-mile range, it makes an ideal choice for tradespeople who need a compact, easy-to-manoeuvre van for city streets and busy sites.
Medium Vans
For tradespeople who need extra cargo space without sacrificing efficiency, the Fiat e-Scudo tops the medium category with its relatively compact dimensions compared to other top-ranked models, while a 219-mile range supports a full day of work.
Large Vans
www.tempcover.com
Think about features that support how you actually work, such as racking systems or tow-bars. Focus on what’s essential and check which models offer these as options. Consider temporary insurance for test drives, available from as little as one hour, it lets you legally try out vehicles and see how they fit your working day.
The Peugeot e-Partner and Fiat e-Doblò are great for those who want extra range for longer routes. The e-Partner offers one of the largest battery ranges in its class, while the e-Doblò’s narrower body can make city driving and site access easier.
Meanwhile, the LEVC VN5 stands out for both manoeuvrability and long-distance capability, making it a strong choice for tradespeople who need both agility on tight streets and the endurance to cover longer jobs without stopping frequently.
For tradespeople who need maximum cargo space, the Fiat E-Ducato tops the large electric van category. Its 267-mile range and relatively compact dimensions for a large van can make city streets and tighter sites easier to navigate.
One large vehicle of note is the Ford E-Transit in third place, as this could offer benefits to tradespeople on intensive workdays, with fast charging helping to keep the van ready with minimal downtime. n

Tucked away in the charming seaside town of Bray, Co. Wicklow, Richard and Michelle Murphy have turned a piece of Irish history into their dream family home. Often called the “Brighton of Ireland,” Bray is full of Victorian-era architecture — and their stunning property, Bray Coach House, once played a very different role.
Caring for theCoach House
Built around 1860, the coach house was originally designed to shelter horses, carriages, and hay. One of its most striking features today — beautiful curved brick walls — was actually a practical solution for manoeuvring carriages around tight corners.
“We love the curved walls,” the couple shares. “They’re so full of character and history.”
The building had seen many lives, later serving as a workshop before falling into disrepair. Richard and Michelle were lucky enough to know the previous owners and eventually bought “one and two-thirds” of the original coach houses, which they combined into one unique home.
“It was a long journey... Two years of planning, construction, and plenty of DIY, but it’s been worth it and really has become a dream home for us,” says Richard.
As with many older buildings made of stone and lime plaster, breathability was key. After plenty of research, the Murphys landed on Earthborn Claypaint for its outstanding breathability and eco friendly credentials.
“We researched mainstream manufacturers,” says Richard, “but Earthborn kept coming up as the best option. Breathability was the number one factor. It made no sense to invest in breathable insulation and lime plaster, only to seal it all in with a plastic-based paint.”
Michelle adds, “We also wanted to complete our renovation in a sustainable way, and we loved the eco aspect of Earthborn – the fact we painted our whole house and there was no smell was such a bonus too!”
When it came to colour, they were just as thoughtful. After ordering samples, they chose Flutterby as the main colour throughout their home, it complements everything and ties it all together.
“It’s a beautiful soft colour that works really well in our home. We have a terrazzo tiled floor with white, pink and grey hues alongside walnut joinery, black cladding and lime coloured bricks and render. We needed a neutral that would complement this and Flutterby was a clear winner, we love it!”
They even let their 6-year-old son Logan choose his own bedroom colour — and he went straight for Hobby Wood, a deep, earthy green. “He called it his ‘army green’,” they laughed.
“We liked the deep but warm colour, and as his bedroom has a low level roof line due to being a coach-house, we were able to bring the white Flutterby
down from the ceiling and create a feature of the green walls. It provides a beautiful contrast and calming space for him to enjoy.”
Elsewhere in the house, they embraced bold choices — including Rocky Horse, a rich chocolate brown, in a cosy north facing room.
‘We knew picking a dark colour here would make it feel cosy and snug,” Michelle explains. “Particularly as one of the brick curved walls wraps around it feels like the room is giving you a hug. Since we painted the room, we spend so much more time here with the kids.”
After just a year in their transformed home, the Murphys have created something truly special. So, what’s next? “We’ve got big dreams,” they smile. “A garden room, maybe a wood-fired hot tub… but for now we’re just enjoying the space.” n
Tough on the job, gentle on the planet.
ECOPRO Matt Emulsion proves you can have minimal impact on the environment without compromising on quality. It’s your go-to choice for walls and ceilings in domestic and commercial projects.
EXECUTIVE
The project involved the full decoration package of a substantial family home, encompassing every space.
From the indoor swimming pool and expansive living areas, to a luxurious master suite with his-and-hers bathrooms, children’s bedrooms, a study, and a bespoke kitchen.
The brief was clear, ‘Deliver refined, high-end finishes without compromising on practicality or warmth, ensuring the house functioned as a comfortable family home as well as an elegant living environment.’
A carefully curated palette of premium paints was specified throughout, including Dulux, Farrow & Ball, and Little Greene, selected for their quality, durability, and aesthetic depth.
These were complemented by designer wallpapers from Designers Guild, Woodchip & Magnolia Limited, Fabricut, Inc., Tektura, Thibaut Design, and NOBILIS x Marie Hartig Studio. Each finish was chosen to enhance the character of individual spaces while maintaining cohesion across the home.
The project also highlights the realities and risks often faced within the construction sector. The decoration package was originally appointed by a client who entered liquidation before works commenced. This unexpected development caused delays and posed significant challenges for both the end client and the project team, particularly given the investment already made in procurement and detailed project planning.
Despite these obstacles, collaboration and determination from all parties ensured the project was brought to a successful conclusion.
The home was completed to an exceptional standard, delivered on schedule for occupation and festive celebrations, allowing the owners to finally move into their dream property.
The finished residence demonstrates how precision, care, and premium finishes can transform a new build into a home designed for family life, entertaining, and lasting memories.
Credit is due to the J&N team, whose commitment and quality workmanship were instrumental in achieving this outcome.”
L Varley Interiors recently undertook the redecoration of a bathroom in a residential mid-Victorian property. The client requested a refurbishment that would be sympathetic to the period style of the house and had selected the wallpaper and matching tonal colour scheme.
Surface sympathy
The project was scheduled to take approximately five days, with the main aim to redecorate the bathroom in a style harmonious with the rest of the property.
The client had some new tiling, sink furniture and radiator fitted in the bathroom, these features were carefully masked and taped to safeguard against damage, dust, and paint.
All the old paper was stripped from the walls, which were then rubbed down using a Mirka dustless sanding unit. Any imperfections were face-filled with Gyproc EasiFill and sanded, with additional filling and sanding as required. Two walls had been replastered and these were also sanded down ready to paint.
The ceiling and the joints of the old lining paper were also rubbed down and filled to create a smooth surface.
Special treatment
Wall areas, including bare plaster, received two coats of Zinsser Guardz to seal existing surfaces and mitigate potential moisture problems common in bathrooms. The walls were then cross-lined with 1700 grade lining paper for added durability.
Loose paint on the coving was scraped back before being face-filled with a very wet mix of EasiFill, which was brushed into the detailing and mouldings. The woodwork was also rubbed down with the Mirka dustless sanding system, filled with 2k Wood Filler, sanded again, and then primed with one coat of Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Plus for improved adhesion.
The finishes
Once prepared, the ceiling, coving, and walls were finished with three coats of Johnstone’s Trade Cleanable Matt in their respective colours, with secondary filling applied between coats where necessary. The woodwork received three coats of Johnstone’s Trade Aqua Guard Satin, with sanding >
Achieving crisp lines was challenging due to the uneven and lumpy surfaces from years of repairs and painting.

Little Greene Great Ormond Street Wallpaper in Aqua colourway was applied to the pre-cross-lined wall using Little Greene’s ready-mixed, paste-the-wall adhesive. Once all work was complete, the room was de-masked and thoroughly cleaned.
Challenges and considerations
No major difficulties were encountered, although more preparation was required than initially anticipated. Achieving crisp lines when cutting in around the coving
was challenging due to the uneven and lumpy surfaces resulting from years of repairs and painting.
Additionally, the timescale and budget ran slightly over due to the increased amount of preparation needed after stripping the walls, which is not uncommon in properties of this age.
The client was very happy with the work and loves the wallpaper set against the colour scheme. They have booked me in for further work on the property. n
Something is shifting in painting and decorating... Clients are no longer just asking who can do the job, but who they want doing it. Increasingly, the answer is women.
The women in demand
By Anna Moynihan, Co-Founder, TaskHer
The painting and decorating trade has always evolved in response to how people live and work. New products, regulations and client expectations are part of the job. What deserves more attention now is the growing demand for women painters and decorators and what that demand says about how the trade is changing.
This shift is being driven by clients, not campaigns. Homeowners, contractors and facilities managers are increasingly asking for women on jobs, often after a positive first experience. Once that working relationship is established, many make a point of booking women decorators again.
Painting and decorating skill has never been about gender. Women are just as capable of delivering high-quality work as men. The real shift is in how clients make decisions and the standards they now expect from everyone they hire.
Painting and decorating has always involved more than the finished surface. Preparation, reliability, communication and respect for the spaces we work in all shape how a job is experienced. As clients become more informed and more involved, these factors are carrying greater weight. Decorators who consistently meet expectations are the ones being recommended and rebooked, regardless of gender.
The increasing demand for women painters and decorators reflects this shift in priorities. For some clients, it comes down to comfort and trust, particularly in domestic or sensitive environments. For others, it’s about established working relationships. In every case, the decision is practical rather than ideological.
At the same time, the industry continues to face well-documented skills shortages. Workloads are rising while experienced tradespeople leave the trade. Meeting demand will require attracting and retaining a wider range of skilled people. Supporting more women into painting and decorating roles is part of that broader, unavoidable challenge.
www.taskher.co.uk
For anyone running a decorating business today, this has practical implications. Recruitment practices, site culture and working conditions all influence who
enters the trade and who stays. Businesses that respond to a changing workforce and client base are better positioned to remain competitive.
Women are still underrepresented in the industry and often treated as an exception. Normalising their presence is not about preference or politics, it’s about ensuring the trade reflects the market it serves and draws from the full pool of available skill.
The demand for women painters and decorators is not a statement about who is better at the job. It reflects a market that is becoming more client-led, more professional and more selective at a time when the wider industry is also seeking skilled labour. Painters and decorators continue to be needed across residential and commercial projects, and many businesses are already feeling the effects of skills shortages and rising workloads.
The decorators and businesses that recognise shifts in client expectations, including the increasing demand for women in the trade, will be better placed to attract work, retain talent and build reputations that last. Those that don’t respond to these changes early may find the best opportunities passing them by. n
In a competitive market, achieving the perfect finish is crucial. While the right products contribute to success, taking advantage of the support paint manufacturers provide can help to make a real difference.
Dillon Cilliers from Valspar Trade tells us how ‘on the ground’ support can help decorators produce their best work.
The key to better end results
We all know that decorating is a truly skilled profession, with care and attention needed to achieve your customer’s desired results. Despite this, even the most experienced painters can encounter new materials, challenging substrates or client demands that push them to the limit of their knowledge. With this in mind, having support on hand from a paint manufacturer can provide confidence that you’re completing the job to the best of your ability. By having this advice only a phone call away when you need it, you’re able to get clear guidance, rather than wasting time (and potentially money) on trial and error.
Beyond the paint
While the quality of the paint and tools of course play an integral part, that’s not all that counts, with more and more decorators looking for a relationship with a paint brand that goes beyond just supplying cans of paint. They’re looking for practical, real-world advice, from things like guidance on the right prep work for tricky substrates and product recommendations to colour advice, help with calculating paint quantities or on-site problem solving.
Whilst this support may not always be needed, having it there serves as a safety net. As many of you will know, no two jobs are the same, meaning the challenges that come with them aren’t always able to be solved with a one-size-fits-all approach.
An added support network
There’s also a personal side to this too, with decorating often a lonely profession, particularly if you’re a oneman band. For this reason, it can be good to know that if you hit a snag, from unexpected surface challenges to adhesion issues, you aren’t alone when facing it. These relationships also work both ways... Not only can painters benefit from industry advice, but manufacturers too can gain crucial insights from decorators, using their products every day on site.
Valspar Trade
With a network of local Trade Sales Specialists (TSSs) across the UK, Valspar Trade provides hands-on, personalised support to decorators, whether it’s a quick phone call or a site visit. These TSSs are more than just a helpline – they’re a familiar, friendly face who genuinely understands the trade. With regular check-ins, the ability to book a call back slot if you’re busy, a direct line via phone or email and a commitment to building strong relationships, your local TSS can become a trusted partner in your business.

Whether it’s a domestic or commercial concrete floor, there are several questions to ask before you can determine the right product and application.
Here are the top questions you should ask before you begin...
Pa int ing Concrete Floors
1 Is the floor bare or previously painted? This will determine the right coat system for the job.
2 If the concrete was painted, is the coating single pack or twin pack?
If you are unsure, score the previous coating with a sharp point. If this breaks the back of the floor coating, then it is single pack. A sharp point over a twin pack coating slides or skids over the dry film surface and does not make any impression. Solvent tests will also determine if the coatings are single pack or twin pack. Epoxy coatings are only compatible with other epoxy coatings, the same applies to single pack coatings.
2 What ‘traffic’ will it be subjected to?
Consider whether it will be mainly foot traffic, tyre traffic or both.
3 What is the approximate age of the floor?
If known, this will help you assess what type of prep work is required. All hard concrete surfaces must be stable, dry, free of contamination such as dirt, grime,
Top tips for painting concrete floors
• Degrease before any repairs or other preparation, making sure the entire surface is treated with the recommended cleaner.
• If you are using Acid Etch, ensure you follow manufacturer’s instructions as this is a highly specialised product.
• Minimum temperature application of paint systems is 10ºC.
• Always refer to the product technical data sheet of products.
• Trial the product on a small test area first.
• Make sure the paint system is left to fully cure before using the space.
oil, grease, chemicals, poorly adhering and flaking paints. A floor paint will not harden a soft surface and the coating will fail under foot and tyre contact.
4 What is the condition of the floor?
Ensuring the floor is free of contaminants such as grit, dust and lose material is essential. Also ensure the floor is free of any cracks.
5 Has the floor been layered with a screed or a self-levelling compound?
If the concrete floor is bare, this is a key consideration. Not all screeds and self-levelling compounds can be painted. Finding out who manufactured the material will help you determine this. If you’re unsure then get in touch with the Brewers Specialist Coatings Helpline.
6 Is the floor power floated or sealed?
A power floated floor is created by buffing a freshly set concrete floor with a power float machine, creating a mirror like shine. This makes the surface less prone to cracks. The porosity of bare concrete floors should be tested using an easy porosity test.
8 If it is bare concrete, is it fully dry and ready to paint?
Conducting a sweat test is a simple and effective way to check the dryness of a concrete floor. Tape a polythene sheet to the floor and leave for 24 hours. If condensation appears then it is not dry enough to paint. Paint adhesion will not be successful if the floors are still damp and any moisture in the substrate will result in paint failure. n
Each flooring project will require different considerations, please get in touch with the Brewers Specialist Coatings helpline on 01323 576101 to discuss yours in more detail

Damage free delivery Safeguarding paint products during transit
Transporting and delivering paint tins and tubs presents challenges, from liquid leakage and temperature sensitivity to drops and crush damage during transit, each product requires careful consideration to ensure it arrives safely and in pristine condition. Whether you are a retailer, distributor, or manufacturer, the right packaging strategy can dramatically reduce product damage, customer complaints, and operational waste.
Safeguarding paint tin/tubs during transit is about more than avoiding breakages, it is about brand reputation, operational efficiency, and longterm customer trust. With the right combination of robust packaging materials, smart packing methods, and reliable supplychain partners, you can ensure every product arrives safely and ready for use.
Below are some essential tips to help safeguard paints, tins and tubs items during transit, along with bestpractice packaging techniques that support both product protection and supplychain efficiency.
Certified, robust containers
Always use highquality, UN-Approved metal or plastic paint tins that are designed for transportation. Ensure lids have tamper-evident features or locking mechanisms to withstand pressure changes during shipping.
Before boxing paints, apply:
• Lid clips, crimping, or paper tape for stronger closure
• Protective film, shrink wrap or recycled plastic bag to contain accidental leakage
• Pulp fitments at the base and top of each unit to contain adding a safeguarding layer of protection against side movement, vibration and impact.
For multipacks, prevent movement and reduce risk of tin-to-tin impact by using:
• Corrugated dividers
• Pulp fitments
• Packing peanuts or loose fill
Paints, especially waterbased or speciality coatings, can be sensitive to heat and cold. Correct temperature handling preserves paint quality and prevents thickening, freezing, or separation, so it’s important to mitigate temperature fluctuations.
Where necessary:
• Use insulated liners
• Add temperature stability indicators for premium shipments
• Avoid leaving goods in unregulated vehicles for extended periods
Clear labelling for safe handling
Correct labelling reduces mishandling, speeds up warehousing, and ensures correct compliance for paints and chemicals. Clear labelling ensures handlers know the risks and requirements of each shipment. Include:
• “This Way Up” arrows
• “Fragile” or “Handle With Care”
• ADR or transport hazard labels for solvent-based paints
• Batch labels and QR codes for traceability
Choosing the right partner
A trusted packaging supplier, such as Allpack, can help you select materials that are not only protective but also sustainable and compliant.
Choosing secure, eco-friendly packaging solutions for transporting paint products, ensures they reach their destination intact and free from damage. Allpack’s comprehensive range of sustainable packaging options, such as PaintGuard™ provides the perfect fit for your paint tins, tubs and containers.

P&D professionals urged to consider source and quality of the ladders they buy
What is the true value of your life?
It’s a question few trade professionals ever stop to consider – until a fall from height results in a life-changing injury.
Dave Elson, Compliance Manager at leading ladders and access solutions specialist Werner, is a strong advocate of a safety-first mindset. In this article, he explains why taking shortcuts to save time or money can ultimately become the most expensive mistake of all.
B U YER BEWARE!
For the painter and decorator, the biggest potential safety risk comes from working at height. As a responsible manufacturer, Werner provides safety awareness courses as part of its ongoing commitment to saving lives and helping prevent avoidable accidents – from minor sprains through to severe injuries such as head trauma.
‘But it was a bargain!’
Even with every precaution taken, if a trade professional fails to use the correct equipment for the job, the likelihood of an accident increases. That risk is heightened further if the chosen ladder is poorly made
or relies on low-quality materials. This may be the case when unknown UK brands - or cheap imported onesare purchased and may lack structural integrity, weight bearing strength, or long-term durability.
Structural ladder failure can stem from several defects, including bent or twisted stiles, cracked or loose rungs, missing rivets, or damaged joints. Any of these faults can cause a ladder to break or collapse without warning, leading to sudden falls and potentially serious injuries.
Despite strict workplace safety regulations, there is no legal requirement to use certified ladders, meaning lowcost, non-compliant options are widely available online and some would fail to meet European safety benchmarks. Therefore, there is an inherent risk that some will lack structural integrity, weight-bearing strength, or long-term durability, putting workers at significant risk.
Buying cut-price products from unrecognised sellers is effectively playing Russian roulette with your life, and the products can fall well short of the stringent safety standards that Werner products consistently meet. While many imported items may seem good value, the materials used can vary dramatically and may be unsafe from the outset or degrade within months of use.It is therefore essential for trade professionals and businesses to source access equipment from reputable manufacturers who adhere to recognised standards such as EN131 (for ladders) and BS EN 1004 (for mobile access towers). >
Training
Training should always include fall prevention, covering hazard identification, emergency response, and legal responsibilities for both workers and employers.
Werner offers a range of training options, including the Ladder Association’s Ladders & Stepladders Users Course and PASMA programs. Through Werner’s Stepping Up to Ladder Safety campaign, professionals can also access downloadable guides on ladder selection, inspection, and safe use.
By prioritising safety at every stage, design, procurement, training, and enforcement – the number of workplace accidents taking place can be significantly reduced and ensure safer conditions for all professionals working at height. To view Werner’s Ladder Safety Guides visit www.wernerco.com/uk/ladder-safety
Choosing cheap products can cost far more over time –not only through the risk of injury or death, but also through the need to repeatedly replace ladders or access equipment. Investing in long-life, repairable ladders reduces waste and minimises environmental impact.
Werner’s quest for safety
Research and development sit at the core of the Werner ethos, with significant, ongoing investment in new product design that enhances safety while supporting more efficient working.
Consider the AdjustaStepPRO® step ladder, launched in February 2025. Developed in collaboration with trade professionals, it delivers maximum versatility, adapting to uneven surfaces and demanding site conditions while prioritising user safety.
Effective equipment design must consider more than basic functionality; it must ensure ease of adjustment, stability, and comfort – all of which contribute to safer working environments. Werner’s approach ensures the company remains a market leader in access solutions, with products rigorously tested to meet the most demanding standards.
This commitment to safety by Werner is further underlined by the findings of a joint investigation by a newly published report by The Ladder Association and the Test & Research Centre. The report uncovered alarming safety failures among telescopic ladders sold in the UK, particularly those purchased online from unknown or third-party sellers.
Werner is the world leader in ladders and has a complete line of climbing products designed for working at heights.
Sales of telescopic ladders have risen thanks to their compact, lightweight and adjustable design. However, of the 18 ladders tested, only 22% passed all required safety checks. Every Werner telescopic ladder that underwent the same rigorous testing, however, was confirmed safe for use. n
The portfolio includes stepladders, loft ladders, scaffolding, combination ladders, stepstools, staging, accessories and fall protection equipment including harnesses, lanyards, anchors and compliance kits. From ladders to fall protection, Werner provides a full line of climbing equipment that's engineered to give you maximum safety, durability and productivity at every height. All Werner products meet or exceed applicable international safety standards. www.wernerco.co.uk

Leading professional painting tools manufacturer Purdy has unveiled the Altitude roller sleeve, a premium addition to its product range that delivers an ultra-smooth paint finish whilst dramatically increasing application speed.
Designed for professional decorators who refuse to choose between quality and efficiency, the Altitude roller redefines what's possible in a single tool. Featuring a latest generation microfibre and polyester blend fabric, the Altitude delivers an exceptionally uniform, smooth finish whilst offering 50% more coverage than Purdy's White Dove roller, significantly reducing the time required to complete each job.
Engineered specifically for professional use, the advanced fabric technology ensures superior paint release, translating directly to improved hide and wet film thickness that professionals can see and feel with every stroke.
The result is fewer coats, better coverage per square foot and a flawless finish that meets the exacting standards of today's decorating professionals.
The Altitude roller has been designed with real-world application in mind. Low splatter performance keeps work areas cleaner and reduces preparation time, whilst the smooth,
consistent finish eliminates the need for excessive touch-ups or additional passes.
Available in multiple sizes including 9-inch, 14-inch, 4.5-inch and 6.5-inch mini jumbo formats, the Altitude adapts to any project requirement, from expansive wall coverage to detailed work in tighter spaces.
Andy Cummins, Senior Product Manager at Purdy, said, “The Altitude roller represents a significant step forward in our commitment to supporting professional decorators.
The traditional perception has always been that decorators must accept a trade-off between rollers that provide an ultra-smooth finish and those that get the job done quickly.
The new Altitude roller has been developed to eliminate this dilemma entirely. It’s a superior performing roller that allows decorators to work faster without sacrificing the premium finish their clients expect and demand.”
Dedicated to elevating the professional painting and decorating craft, Purdy continues to innovate with solutions that address the real challenges decorators face on site every day.
We’ve all had the same frustration: low-tack tape won’t stick, standard tape sticks too much—and suddenly you’re dealing with paint pull.
Perfectly positioned between tesa® Pink 4333 Precision Mask Sensitive and tesa® Yellow 4334 Precision Mask, it delivers a perfectly balanced adhesive that performs exactly as you need it to— even on the most demanding paint jobs.

Durable Kitchen & Bathroom Eggshell
Durable Kitchen & Bathroom Eggshell has been launched to provide decorators with a single product that delivers longlasting performance in two of the most demanding rooms in the home. The mould-resistant coating combines durability, stain resistance and a low-sheen eggshell finish to ensure a long-lasting result that withstands frequent cleaning, moisture and everyday wear.
Rather than choosing between overlapping or specialist products, Durable Kitchen & Bathroom Eggshell provides professionals with one eggshell solution that is designed for high-humidity environments. It delivers five core benefits:
• Mould resistance: Helping to inhibit mould growth in areas where moisture can linger.
• Resistance to the impact of condensation: Formulated to help minimise the effects of humidity and frequent cleaning. It does not burnish when repeatedly wiped and is resistant to surface leaching, for a more even, consistent finish over time.
• Durability: In busy spaces, spills are inevitable. Dulux Trade Durable Kitchen & Bathroom Eggshell includes stain resistant technology that has been proven against common household stains including coffee, soy sauce, red wine and black oil. With Scrub Class 1 durability, it is designed to withstand repeated cleaning without compromising the finish, helping walls look better for longer. It requires a seven-day curing period for full durability.
• The right sheen level: High sheen finishes can exaggerate marks and surface blemishes, but Durable Kitchen & Bathroom Eggshell offers a softer, lower sheen that means decorators can achieve a more refined, contemporary look without compromising on durability and cleanability.
• Colour choice: Available in over 14,000 Dulux Trade colours, as well as the full Dulux Heritage colour range and RAL and NCS shades. It can also be colour matched to designer shades, helping decorators meet any customer brief.
Professionals can trust Durable Kitchen & Bathroom Eggshell to deliver long-lasting results, with coverage up to 17m2 per litre and a two-hour recoat time, decorators can also work efficiently, helping to keep projects moving and reduce downtime.

There are a number of reasons why the performance of brushes, roller sleeves and other paint tools worsen over time and why some wear out quicker than others. The quality of the tools is one important factor, with cost and manufacturer reputation being key indicators of quality. If it is cheap or from an unreliable brand, then it is unlikely to offer the impeccable finish or longevity that better products can offer. Also, lower quality products will not be able to withstand daily professional use and will often suffer filament loss, shorten the lifespan of the brush and potentially ruining the finish of the painted surface.
Keep things clean
Cleaning is another factor. Overly aggressive or inadequate cleaning will shorten the life of the brushes and roller sleeves. It is always advisable to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and invest in

tools that can help achieve more effective cleaning, such as specially designed wire brushes and combs to remove paint without damaging the filaments. Similarly, correct storage is essential as brushes especially can be damaged if care is not taken with storage. Protecting the brush filaments is essential, so toolboxes and bags designed specifically for professional painters and decorators can be a valuable investment.
Paint brush covers should also be a consideration. For example, each Purdy brush comes packaged in a coated cardboard ‘keeper’, which the brush should be returned to after every use throughout its life to maintain the shape of the bristles and protect them from impact during transportation.
Look out for the flags
Beyond this there are specific features to look for in a professional brush that will help ensure long term performance. One of the most important of these is flagged filaments and how these are maintained over the life of the brush.
Brushes with flagged filaments include split ends that are created during the manufacturing process. The increased surface area of each filament helps the brushes to hold more paint, ensure a smoother paint release and provides a better finish.
To ensure this performance is maintained, it is important to distinguish between brushes that are factory flagged only and those designed to be self-flagging, where the flagging is renewed as the brush filaments wear down over time.
For self-flagging brushes, the normal action of use and cleaning that flexes the filaments ensures this flagging continues. This replicates the structure of natural bristle that similarly continues to split at the tip over time.
With brushes that do not self-flag, the factory flagging added during manufacturing will not last. Once the flagged portion of the filament wears
down it is gone, meaning the brush will not pick up and release the paint as effectively and the new blunt ends of the filaments will make the brush feel stiffer and less easy to work with.
Quality products and careful cleaning and storage are essential in maintaining the longevity of painting and decorating tools, but it is also important to select products designed to deliver the same level of performance throughout their lifespan. Brushes with self-flagging filaments, such as those from Purdy’s range, are just one example of how this is achieved. n
