A WORD FROM OUR BOARD WELCOME TO THE FIRST CATALYST EAST AFRICA NEWSLETTER AFTER QUITE SOME TIME, AND THANK YOU FOR SUBSCRIBING. WE HAVE SPENT YEARS WATCHING CAPABLE ORGANISATIONS DO SERIOUS WORK IN THEIR COMMUNITIES AND STILL LOSE OUT TO ORGANISATIONS THAT DO LESS, BUT PRESENT BETTER. THAT GAP IS NOT FAIR, AND IT IS NOT INEVITABLE. IT IS A SET OF DOCUMENTS, SYSTEMS AND HABITS THAT CAN BE LEARNED. THAT IS WHAT CEA EXISTS TO CLOSE. FUNDING IS NOT YOUR FIRST PROBLEM Welcome to the first Catalyst East Africa newsletter, and thank you for subscribing. If you signed up, you are most likely running or supporting an organisation that does real work in a real community - and you have run into the same wall the rest of us have. The work is good. The need is obvious. The funding still does not come. We started CEA because that wall is almost never about the quality of the work.
"You don't just need funding. You need the systems in place to fundraise independently."
Most applications are refused before anyone reads the project description. Before a funder judges your idea, they check something far more basic: can we move money to this organisation safely, and can we account for it afterwards?
That check is not about how much you care. It is about whether you are registered, whether the money lands somewhere that is not a personal account, whether a board actually meets, whether anyone independent has looked at your books, and whether you can show what changed because of your work.
An organisation with all of that and a modest project gets funded. An organisation with an excellent project and none of it gets a polite refusal, and usually never finds out why. The encouraging part: that list is finite. It is a few weeks of deliberate work, not a transformation.

THE FIVE GAPS WE SEE MOST OFTEN Drawn from the assessments and applications that cross our desk. Read it as a checklist for your own organisation.
Registere, but no TIN. A certificate of registration is not the end of the process. Without a tax identification number you are shut out of most institutional funders and every government partnership.
Money moving through a personal account This is the fastest way to lose a funder's confidence, and it puts the individual at personal risk. You need an account in the organisation's registered name, with at least two signatories.
A Few Notes To Remember "We have helped many people" is a claim, not evidence. Numbers reached, a baseline, and a simple record kept consistently will carry you further than the most moving story.

Names in a constitution are not governance. Funders ask for the minutes of your last two board meetings, and a surprising number of organisations cannot produce them.
A small organisation does not always need a full audit. It does need someone independent to have examined the books and put their name to what they found.

THE PROPOSAL BANK Most organisations write every proposal from a blank page, under deadline pressure, and it shows. The structure funders expect does not change much between calls - problem statement, objectives, beneficiary targeting, workplan, M&E framework, risk matrix, budget narrative. What changes is your evidence. So we built [NUMBER] full proposal templates covering [SECTORS], each with the workplan tables, risk matrix and budget structure already in place. You bring your evidence and your numbers; you are not inventing a document at midnight. The proposal bank is available to all members. Speak to your relationship manager.
FIND OUT WHERE YOU ACTUALLY STAND Our Funding Readiness Assessment goes further than a checklist. We work through your organisation with you, score each area against the evidence you can actually produce, and give you a written roadmap in the order things should be fixed. It is not a form you fill in online, and it is part of Member and Premier membership. Tell us about your organisation and we will tell you honestly whether you are ready for it.

Community Education & Literacy Grants Aga Khan Foundation. Localised funding for primary school infrastructure and digital tools in rural schools Up to $80,000 | East Africa
Clean Water Access & Sanitation Grants WaterOrg International. Solar-powered community boreholes and clean water storage hubs in drought-affected zones. Up to $150,000 | Global
East Africa Emergency Relief Fund EU Humanitarian Aid (ECHO). Rapid response funding for local NGOs delivering emergency shelter and primary healthcare to displaced families. Expect demanding compliance requirements. Up to $450,000 | East Africa

19–20 November · Kampala Pan African Social Enterprise Summit 2026 Convened by the Federation of Uganda Social Entrepreneurs, expecting over 500 leaders, investors and policymakers. The one on this list most of our subscribers can actually get to.
8–10 October NGO Forum, 89th Ordinary Session of the ACHPR The civil society forum preceding the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights session, convened by the African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies. This year it sits against the African Union’s 2026 theme on water and sanitation.
25–27 October · Cape Town African Philanthropy Forum Conference 2026 Where African funders themselves are discussing how capital gets deployed as giving from the Global North thins. Worth watching even if you cannot travel — the conversations there shape next year’s calls.

ASSOCIATE - from UGX 50,000 a year You assess yourself using our tools and templates, and work through the gaps at your own pace. Priced by organisation size. MEMBER - from UGX 3,000,000 a year We assess you against evidence rather than self-report, score you, and build an improvement roadmap with you. A concession applies to newly formed organisations. PREMIER - UGX 5,000,000 a year Everything in Member, with hands-on support through the roadmap and direct help preparing submissions.
