1 bassoon

1 horn (in F)

1 trombone (needs straight, harmon mutes)

1 Percussion player (needs a superball stick and a bow)

STRINGS: (2 violins, 1 viola, 1 cello, 1 double bass)

Percussion instruments:

1 Bass Drum

1 small suspended Cymbal

1 Tam-tam (needs a superball stick)

1 Anvil

2 Bongos

1 Ocean Drum

2 Congas

Gongs:

• The score is in C

2 Spring Coils (high+low)

1 Vibraslap

1 Thunder sheet

1 Wind Chimes (metal)

1 Glockenspiel

1 Vibraphone

1 flexatone (needs a bow)

Crotales (to be played arco, sound 2 octaves higher):

General Point:

Accidentals (including grace notes) only affect the pitch to which they directly refer, not other octaves, for the duration of the bar in which the accidental is written.

Do NOT use vibrato on gliss. or port.

STRINGS:

S.P.= sul pont.

P.O.= position ordinary

Make a difference between Gliss. and Port

Gliss. = start to shift the pitch immediately (and travel during the full length of the note duration).

Port. = shift the pitch just before you go to next note.

Do NOT vibrato on gliss. or port.

All tremolo (including 2 note tremolo) must be played as fast as possible.

Scene 5:

Following cuts have been authorised by the composer. It is at discretion of the production team to decide if one or indeed any of the cuts are advantageous to the production:

Bar 383 - 398 (end of bar 382 jump to the beginning of Bar 399)

Bar 404 - 420 (end of bar 403 jump to the beginning of Bar 421)

Bar 404 - 416 (end of bar 403 jump to the beginning of Bar 417) - Bar 417 without winds, vibraphone and singers

Interlude: if the production needs a short instrumental interlude between the end of scene 2 and beginning of scene 3, the composer suggests that the ensemble plays the following passage: from Scene 2 bar 151 (without flute and bassoon in bar 151) until the end of bar 158 without vocal parts, possibly in a slower tempo.

INSTRUMENTATION: If the use of a larger ensemble benefits the production, string parts can be played with more players. In that case, the suggested String size is: 65431

Special thanks to Stephen Delaney and Daryl Runswick

Make a difference between Gliss. and Port. Gliss. = shift the pitch immediately (and travel during the full length of the note duration). Port. = shift the pitch just before you go to next note. Do NOT vibrato on gliss. or port.

WILLIAM hands his drawing over to ALBERT. ALBERT takes the drawing and moves close to the fire place; ALBERT sits down next to the open fire and studies the drawing.

WILLIAM eventually stands and MARGARET holds the candle close to the drawing, so that WILLIAM can look at it in the dark. (William’s running around is needed so as to give the drawing time to cool down).

WILLIAM goes back to ALBERT. ALBERT takes the drawing another time and holds it over the fire, carefully looking at it.

WILLIAM is about to throw the drawing into the fire, when SAM catches it and rescues the drawing.

ALBERT takes LILITH’s arm and moves her towards the door, LILITH waves SAM and MARGARET goodbye. After ALBERT and LILITH have left the house, SAM, who stands close to the open fire, carefully looks at the drawing that WILLIAM has made. SAM then puts the drawing into a drawer and blows out the candle in his hand. Almost dark.

Fast dunkel.

They all go up to the tulip tree.

SAM is counting its branches from the bottom upwards, while LILITH is already climbing up.

WILLIAM hands the gold-bug to ALBERT:

ALBERT wraps a string around the gold-bug’s back, while SAM is climbing down the tulip tree.

ALBERT hands over the gold-bug to SAM, who climbs up the tulip tree again.

When SAM reaches the tree’s seventh branch, he gives the gold-bug to LILITH. LILITH then carefully lowers the string so that the gold-bug enters the hole in the branch. While SAM, LILITH, ALBERT and WILLIAM are holding their breath,

we hear the scraping noises of the gold-bug inside the branch. After a while, some rumbling sounds are heard.

LILITH starts to roll up the string and out of the hole comes the gold-bug – holding a key with its legs and antennae.
