PROGRAMME NOTE
My Shadow is scored for string orchestra and piano. The distinctive timbral discrepancy of piano to the string instruments in the score inspired me to conceive six contrapuntal miniatures in which the piano layer exists independently. Like the shadow in the eponymous poem by Robert Louis Stevenson, the piano layer is a mysterious figure in this music. Sometimes it just imitates the other layers like a shadow but then suddenly grows to become dominant. Other times it demonstrates a sharp contrast to the other layers by singing its own tunes and then making harmonies with them. The piece is also a contemplation on the dark side of our soul.
